On her wedding night, Mingmei had a dream.

She dreamed of a “Book of Life”.

And the protagonist of this book was her mother-in-law, who would bump her head and faint the next morning, only to wake up reborn.

Apparently, her mother-in-law had returned from fifty years in the future. She had witnessed the changes of the era and experienced social development. With this rebirth, she intended to ride the wave of the times, work hard, and lead the whole family towards glory. (Take this with a grain of salt)

Of course,

Along the way, she planned to reform the little troublemakers in the family, deal with the big troublemakers in the courtyard house, and let them feel the iron fist of justice as a side task. (This part is true)

Mingmei, the young daughter-in-law who had vaguely heard herself described as “a lazy, gluttonous, good-for-nothing”, bit her blanket and whimpered.

What should she do?

Bang!

A sound came from the outer room.

Mingmei: Here it comes! Her mother-in-law has been reborn!

This is possibly one of the best CN I have ever read. Every chapter kept me on the edge of my seat, and there is no boring chapters, which is rare for me because I can get bored very easily.

The character development is also top notch, and there are many characters who I had hated with a passion in the beginning but later turns over a new leaf and became a better version of themselves.

The story is also very heart warming, and you can both laugh and cry throughout the... more>> story. Words cannot describe how in love I am with this novel.

Just a heads up though, the story can get a bit dark, and there are a lot of fighting, though its mostly between the old ladies. And there are also some elements that I don't agree with, but it was minimal and did not interfere with my reading experience much.

All in all, I loved this novel so much and dare I say probably even the best CN that I have read so far. Definitely a 10/10 read. <<less

If you are looking for a light hearted story which will make you constantly laugh I would recommend reading this. Its very homely and down to earth. I was expecting to see the same boring transmigration story but was happily disappointed. This book and all its characters and the situations are so damn hilarious. Its funny with no overt complications and just makes you smile. What else do you need?

Edit: I take back the light hearted comment. Its still fun and chaotic but it does get a little dark... more>> as the storey progresses. <<less

Summary: Ming Mei was born with the confusing ability to see the future of people around her in her dreams. On her wedding night, Ming Mei dreams of Zhao Guihua's, her mother-in-law's, future and realizes that her MIL has been reborn that same night. Armed with some foreknowledge of the future but a lot of understanding about her MIL, Ming Mei deploys her ultimate survival technique -- flattery! Between her reborn MIL's more open-minded outlook and Ming Mei's shameless flattery, both of them strive to live well.

WARNING: Mentions of prostitution, human trafficking, h*mophobia, etc.

WHY IS THIS AUTHOR SO OBSESSED WITH PROSTITUTION??? As of chapter 197, we have had 3 people who want to pimp people out, one idiot currently getting pimped out, and one person who used to be pimped out. And these pimps are so similar oh my god.

[collapse]

While there is some conservative viewpoints in regards to homosexuality, it doesn't really take up much of the novel and the viewpoints expressed are indicative of the repressed nature of the time period. That being said, it could be triggering to some. The Greatest Strength of this Novel is that it's HILARIOUS and VIVIDLY ENTERTAINING

You will pretty much never be bored. There is always something funny or amusing happening and in the end, there's a lot of discussion about human nature, poverty, and healthy competition. I have both laughed out loud to point of snorting and also felt genuinely touched by this novel. It reads like a television drama. You can almost picture how a 22 or more episode long drama could be created from this novel. The author does a fantastic job of making the characters all feel very vivid, even if they're not always realistic. The author also never seems to forget characters and they can sometimes wrap up the conclusion to a drama or arc even tens of chapters later. I'm currently on Chapter 218 and I'm still thoroughly entertained each chapter. You start to really invest in the characters even beyond MC and her family. Clarifying Details

The original summary is a bit misleading. While the MIL does make changes to the future, they aren't the kind of earth-shattering changes that the summary would indicate, which is unusual for this genre. Similarly, Ming Mei and MIL never had a relationship even near as dramatic as what the original summary suggests.

MIL's changes are really about living better. She can't strike it rich immediately or face-slap people left and right. There's no long-lost biological parents crawling out of the woodwork. The time period in which she's been reborn was characterized by strict social structure and monitoring which meant that she couldn't do what most rebirth protagonists do and live absolutely freely. What she can do is live better within her means, like treating her family better or being firm with toxic individuals. What does happen, however, is a butterfly effect. MIL and MC's family eats well causing the three spoiled kids next door who were originally going to become thieves and criminals when they got older to be tempted even earlier. Not really MIL's fault, why shouldn't she be allowed to eat well and treat her family well. MC and MIL's family harmony causes the eternal bachelor in their neighborhood to lash out harshly. MC and MIL cultivating a better relationship with MC's maternal family makes it so that yet another neighbor who tried to seize property unlawfully was imprisoned. Most of these are not intended effects but they are the results of MIL and MC's changes.

Also, I generally don't love novels with a lot of conflict between MILs and DILs so I feel the need to clarify that MC is also not necessarily lazy and her MIL does not despise her for it either way.

Translation: Unfortunately, the translation quality is not that good. Expect to have names and places mixed up quite a lot as the chapters go on. It's readable, and context clues will help you understand, but that's more of a credit to the original author. <<less

I don't know where people get "Light Hearted" out of this novel. There is some wild crazy and even really dark stuff that happens. The novel does an extremely impressive job demonstrating the butterfly effect. Most of the changes that the regressed Matriarch of the family are subtle and designed to keep family harmony, however the most overt change she made was a simple desire to ensure her family ate well. She worked harder then before and was looser on her purse strings that was considered normal for the times... more>> and that one change completely and utterly changed the destinies of everyone that lived nearby and all of the people that would come into contact with this court yard. It really came down to her ensuring her family had plenty of food to eat that created an unstoppable domino effect.

Something utterly insane is always happening. Chaos will erupt at the drop of the hat and it never gets boring. While there is a lot of comedy, there are some places where it gets fairly dark, but all in all this is probably one of my favorite novels.

Also to the translator's credit. Each chapter is THICC! <<less

The novel is a lighthearted comedy. Excellent story writing and character development. A great urban time travel in the past story. The time traveller being an old woman was nice and refreshing. All the side characters are also well fleshed out and have a part in the story. It contains most of the tropes of a CN. The straight guy turns gay arc was a bit too stretched and as in every Chinese novel, the gay guy is written as sexually assaulting someone. Otherwise it is a great read and... more>> elicits a few laughs every now and then.

The translators have done an excellent job. <<less
