My Little Poplar

Description

A good-for-nothing, blockheaded rich young master was thrown into the military by his family to teach him a lesson. In this rural, lousy place where nothing was accessible, Young Master Bai called for help in vain, and was forced to accept his fate tearfully. Enduring tough training as well as the daily bruising of his pride was already torturous enough for him, so why did he have to meet a jinx that was always giving him trouble and always coveted his butt? This jinx looked decent and proper on the outside, but was filled with wickedness. Young Master Bai would never surrender to him!

The novel is a story about a weakling of a little willow who, through the military, was guided into becoming a valiant and heroic little poplar. Watch how Young Master Bai takes one step after another to grow into an acceptable soldier of the republic!!

This is a book about character growth and progress, about transformation and perseverance, through the story you get to experience the slow metamorphosis that the main characters go through, they are constantly changing for good, realising things they hadn't and surpassing themselves.

While you read you can be amazed by this progress, watching as the characters continue moving forward, without giving up even if they are dead tired, even if they are desperate and they feel like they can't keep going.

Their perseverance is moving and even inspiring.

It strongly reminds me of... more>> the quote: “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” by Martin Luther King Jr.

It's easy to relate with the main character, maybe due to his 'flaws', he is not the typical hardworking and talented main character who since the beginning is prosperous and matchless. He starts being a weakling, the annoying son of a rich family, he knows no hardship and is pretentious, but after he joins the army he discovers a whole new world, a world where no one will care about his status, where no one will pamper him or care if he cries or shouts, all this 'imperfections' enable you to get to know better the protagonist, to feel his progress as something to be proud because you met him in his worst but then you are also able to watch him rise to glory.

The story can make you laugh and be embarrassed, but it can also be painfully heart wrenching. You can feel how your heart is being torn until it can’t stop bleeding, the turmoil of emotions are intense, there are many tragedies that start happening one after the other and you can do nothing but to feel powerless alongside the characters. Many times you also ask yourself the 'whys' and start to wonder the 'ifs'.

This story and the main character's relationship is, in my opinion, unique. Why? Because of the way it starts building, because of the way they meet each other and fall in love with each other. Their feelings are strong and passionate, although I didn't like the way the male lead mol*sted the protagonist at the beginning, later on you realise that maybe he is not really a bad person...

Their affection towards the other is fulfilling, strong but also irreplaceable, they went through many things, they laughed and cried together, they enjoyed and grieved together. They went through many indescribable hardships, life and death experiences that they sincerely won't be able to experience with anyone again in their lives. All those factors start creating an unbreakable bond between them.

And yes, there is also mistrust and misunderstandings, they also fight and suspect each other because of miscommunication, yet they yearn for the other. Their fights and conflicts reflect how the lack of communication, trust and sincerity can erode a relationship, yet how understanding the other, talking about the problems and fighting them side by side, trusting and cherishing each other can also heal said relationship.

In short, this book is like a mysterious journey, you will be amazed as you start exploring it, but also distressed and maybe melancholic, but once you reach the end of the journey you won't be able to forget it. I would say that this book and the characters are memorable for me, the mix of happy moments and desperate ones, the pride of watching the protagonist succeed, the pain of watching him suffer, are only some of the factors that have made this book unique and unforgettable. <<less

The ML is making me feel uncomfortable.
Spoiler

He sexually harasses the MC and clearly the MC doesn't like it! The ML is such a bully and I don't like him! He might be the first ML that I don't like.

[collapse]

Edit: I guess what makes this story special is that the MC and ML aren't perfect, I still don't like the ML much
Spoiler

a part of me still think that bec he sexually harassed the MC, the MC was bound to give in

[collapse]
this story is really well written and I just feel for the MC so much! I'm gonna miss Princess Bai!

I also really love how when the MC and ML broke up, MC was like, I can definitely let you go. I won't stoop low for a man. Lol.

Highly recommended!!! If you are on the fence deciding, trust me, you will not be disappointed. The plot, was intriguing. More than intriguing I should say, the flow was very smooth and stable. There was spicy smut as well, very explicit, but it was just icing on top. I mean there are novels which are good because they have smut. But in this novel, smut is only an extra thing you get. It is heavy on the emotional part.

The MC's character development was one of the best I have ever... more>> seen. He grew up from a good for nothing to a very fine young man. He transformed into a new person. He was amazing. The ML was also good. You can have many opinions about him, and he might not be the so so righteous guy you see in many novels, but well, that makes it more interesting. He got his karma for that in the novel itself. All in all, their story is one of the strongest bonds, I have ever read because they were there in the time period where it was kind of decided what they are gonna become. They witnessed their growth, mainly the ML saw the MC.
Spoiler

Although the ML took some time to be clear headed, after he confirmed his feelings he spared nothing and was chasing after the MC. Unlike in many novels where the MC get together being easily soft hearted, I loved how he tried to stop himself from going back to the ML. It was a torture for both of them, but I think that period was a time I enjoyed the most, reading.

It’s such a fun and thrilling read and definitely one of my all-time favorite novels! The plot is so worth it!

  • insane character development for Bai Xinyu: From spoiled young master to the top! A lot of people seem to dislike him in the beginning, but I loved his lazy good-for-nothing side and really enjoyed every step in his journey.
  • Jian Suiying: He deserves his own bullet point; he’s a recurrent side character here and continues to be an icon!! I don’t think it’s necessary to read In love with an Idiot before this, but it’s fun to see certain events from Bai Xinyu’s perspective.
  • great side characters: Feng Dongyuan is an angel and gets some spotlight in the extras (which I wish were longer) ! Chen Jing! The Cook Squad!
  • exciting military plot: I didn’t think I’d be interested in such a setting, but SQC does an impressive job depicting not only the the physical but also mental challenges of their military training
  • the smut is sooo good. There aren’t even that many smut scenes, but they’re very memorable! The chapter titles are like super descriptive lol
  • I’m meh towards Yu Fengcheng (ML). I don’t hate him, but I don’t vibe with him, either. Regarding the relationship and crematorium, I’m on Bai Xinyu’s side:
    Spoiler

I believe Bai Xinyu’s hurt was completely justified. While Yu Fengcheng was pursuing Bai Xinyu, getting possesive etc., he was emotionally preoccupied with someone else the whole time. While I’ve read a few commets saying Bai Xinyu overreacted, I disagree. Like Bai Xinyu was literally in a life-and-death-situation with physical and psychological wounds. Anyone with self-respect would distance themself from such an emotional betrayal. Of course, he wouldn’t just „get over it“ and let Yu Fengcheng so easily into his life again. I kinda was rooting for the 2nd ML Yan Shaozhen.

Spoiler Alert!!!!!

So, I don't like the ML. Not because he forced MC to become a cut sleeve like himself but because he wasn't serious about him. He harassed him at first and when the MC began to develop real feelings for him, and they began dating, the entire time they were dating the ML had someone else in his heart. Unbeknownst to the reader and MC, the ML treated MC as a time pass or rather substitute for the real person he was in love with.

This kind of betrayal is... more>> really hard to understand or forgive. One of the worst MLs out there. If the angst just remained between them without involving a third party, I would've liked it 'cause I love reading angst but he was cheating emotionally on MC just because he couldn't be with the other person he loved. Ah, and he had so many shortcoming because of the way he looked down on the MC and MC's brother like what?

Ugh just couldn't feel the romance, since the gradual realisation of ML's true feelings for another made all the rare good times with MC seem irrelevant and lose value. They meant nothing because ML didn't love him but he still made MC (straight guy) fall for a guy (himself). And then of course, the chase happened (typical) so they got together but really I feel so bad for MC. He deserved better. I wish he had someone else who truly cherished and loved him instead of just abusing his trust and playing with him physically and mentally. What a let down

I wouldn't settle for someone like him. He had feelings for his uncle!!! And misled the MC for so damn long without any shame. Truly the worst of MLs out there. Angst could be and almost always is such a delicious experience for me but not when it involves such blatant cheating. This makes the happy ending seem pointless and bleak. And besides, the actual mess of the absurd angst the author decided to work out in their dynamic, there were several things in the military setting of this novel that were way too unrealistic. Military genre is literally my favourite trope in BL stories but such discrepancies in how it was showcased which was far from reality, really distracted me from enjoying this story to the fullest.

MC's brother also was so hypocritical and infuriating since he harshly was against MC being gay when he himself was a gay lol it seemed that the author couldn't come up with actual reasonable struggles and had to resort to angst that made zero sense. <<less

One of the best SQC's books I've read so far. Even though this is only the sixth book I've read.

I find the novel very refreshing from the usual scum gong + crematorium setting. Each of the characters are also well crafted and memorable. The storyline is got my heart beating and feeling patriotic while being really heart warming at some times. Seeing Bai Xin Yu grow from a good for nothing rich second generation fellow to a capable, responsible man made me teared. It felt like seeing my kid grew... more>> up. Also, the car scenes were really lit *_*

I love the relationship between his platoon mates. His platoon captain Chen Jing really pull BXY up so many times throughout his military life. He was strict but never ever gave up on him. His bunk mates Feng Dong Yuan and Qian Liang were also very close to him and helped get himself together. ML Yu Feng Cheng was such a bully at first but thereafter those interactions are interesting.

One of my most memorable part was probably
Spoiler

the whole trial to join the snow leopard team.

[collapse]

I saw how much effort BXY put in and struggled through, of course a lot of this was how much he wanted to stand next to YFC and be on par. But on the later stage, he realised he truly wanted to be proud of himself and not for the sake of chasing after someone's tail which made me really happy for him.

Spoiler

The mission on Kunlun mountain

[collapse]

The so called crematorium part in this novel is quite different from usual 188 novels. Personally I felt that YFC did not lie or harm BXY in any way but is just someone who couldn't tell apart admiration and love. He did quite a lot of things to get BXY's forgiveness but I find the crematorium part to drag on a little too much as BXY was seemingly petty imo.

Bonus cameos were really funny! I love it. The extra for Feng Dong Yuan was good too! <<less

Uggh~ I read this mainly cause of the promised scum abuse, wife chasing and groveling but it wasn't really an easy ride for me. I almost ended up grinding my teeth to oblivion from all my frustration/disgust caused by this s*xual predator ML...🙂💢 Almost all their earlier s*xual encounters fall into the dub-con/non-con territory. He's got ZERO respect for the MC, his situation or his feelings. (งಠಗಠ) ง

BXY (MC) on the other hand is amazing and realistic. I adore the character growth he go through. Watching him go from a... more>> whiny spoilt and naive kid with zero willpower and backbone to a determined young soldier with goals and aspirations made me so happy! It's so well written that I felt like I'm watching my own prodigal son grow up. And probably because of that attachment, I really couldn't stand that disrespectful punk ML who kept buzzing around him.🙂💢

Ngl tho, the groveling and wife-chasing was fun to read. ML seems to have maxed out on the [Shamelessness] skill during their period of separation. The emotions and thoughts of the MC and how it changed was quite well written... and cause of that I didn't really hate it as much as I thought I would when they got back together.

I really liked the ML's family a lot too.. quite quirky all of em~ 😂 <<less

When I read the comments before reading this novel, I thought it would be so bad, but oh boy, it certainly wasn't. I am shocked at how good it was. I never expected I would enjoy this novel to this extent. I too believe that there were some problems with the ML especially in the first chapters like he was such an as*hole but since this is a novel it was certainly enough for me to see that he regretted the things he has done/said and at the end showed... more>> great growth. I actually quite liked the MC. The way he changed, the way he grew up from that irresponsible boy to a respectable man I felt like I was watching my son growing up. It really felt good. The drama, the military life, their camaraderie, the other soldiers like I loved it all so much. I can't forget how much I cried reading how ML felt trying to choose between his loved ones. It is such a complex situation that I can't blame any of them. So glad they got together at the end. Some may say that the way MC became a qualified soldier in a year is impossible or this is Chinese propaganda or that the military is not that "soft" and it could all be true but I don't really care. Yes, I am an emotional person but it really felt like I was the one in face of that dilemma and felt helpless. It really is a great novel, maybe not 5 stars but it is full of emotions and in short, I really liked it <<less

This has become one of my favorite novels. It was a tad difficult for me to digest the first many chapters but I was glad I persevered because the story truly overwhelmed me in a powerful way. I found, as I grew up along side these young courageous men, I also transformed. Realizing how different our opinions of things change when we experienced it from a different perspective, given a different context, after gaining a little insight, a little wisdom. The actions, the emotions, the tears, the laughters were raw,... more>> intense and unabashedly fulfilling. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who would dare to challenge what their own achievements were at the age between 18-23 against these fine young soldiers. I bow down to all those who has ever unselfishly serve their country. Thanks to you, I can sleep well in my safe warm bed at night. <<less

I'm gonna say things directly. One of the most wonderful and unique stories I've ever read.

The main characters went through slow but great character development which made it more realistic and catching.
I just want to say to those who doubted and gave up on this story that you've missed something BIG.

The true to life experience of a soldier. A love story between the MC and the ML as comrades willing to face and conquer any obstacles and hardships. They able to create a greater, mature, responsible and braver version of themselves especially the MC.

He was able to prove not just to his family his worth but most importantly to himself.

I love all the Characters in the story and each has their own significant roles that contributed perfectly to the overall story.

One of the most heart-warming and well character development ever.

Thank you so much to the author as well as to the translators for letting us read this wonderful creation.

More power and God bless you always 💕

I must really enjoy pain bc I've literally read most of the authors novels and I know how painful it can get. Actually I stopped reading this novel 5 chapters in a long time ago bc I hated ML bullying and harassment. Then picked it up again and still have the same feeling but pushed through and I was glad I did. I love the transformation MC goes through and his journey to becoming a wonderful man. I'm still not a big fan of ML, the pain he inflicted to... more>> MC was too real. I wish the author would make him suffer more before bringing them back together. I wish for MC to date others and make ML sooo jealous that he breaks down and begs for forgiveness. That would have been so satisfying. Bc his pursuing MC back was literally acting arrogant and demanding that MC is his. Like dude! Can you cry a little more tears please!!! Lol <<less

This book was a double-edged sword. I love it so much and yet I am so angered by it and almost hate it. I will be blunt because this book absolutely consumed me. I will always remember it.

In the first half of the story, I was enamored. I felt like a wide-eyed doe exploring this world for the first time. I've never really read a military themed book nor felt any interest, but the author lead us and the MC through this wonderful story of comradery, self-exploration, character growth, leadership,... more>> bitterness, survival, tenderness all the things. Sure the MC was absolutely pathetic and insanely annoying at the beginning, I questioned why anyone would take any interest in him but I stayed because I knew his development would be worth it– and my god it was worth it. The struggles, trials and tribulations that he and his comrades went through was awe inspiring. He became someone so different and the results were dazzling.

The translation at times had errors but it didn't detract from the story telling at all because you knew what was being said. The writing was phenomenal (the smut amazing too). We went through so much with the MC and the side characters in those short years. The adventures they went through, the laughter and growth, made me forget everything else in my life and pulled me me in. The action sequence also kept me so engaged, I felt like I was there with them, surviving the grueling tasks ahead, feeling their losses and lows, but also feeling their pride and smiles, their accomplishments. I would give this book a 7/5 at this point if I could.

The second half of the book left me more dazed and confused. I want to rant so much about the book I loved turning downhill. The actions of the characters, their thoughts, all the melodrama that happened
Spoiler

after Xinyu left the military

[collapse]
didn't feel right. I’m someone who loves angst, but this just felt strange. I won't say it felt cheap, but it's almost like we went to a different dragged out book, like the characters went through a role reversal. This is the third book of this author I’ve read so it’s not like I’m a stranger to push and pull.

More ranting
Spoiler

how could Xinyu's brother, who is gay himself, be immediately so against it. Telling Bai Xinyu to never meet Fengcheng again when he didn't know their story simply because of?? I don’t buy the part where he didn't want his brother to go through hardships of a gay life. Does Xinyu not deserve love? Does bis**uality not exist? And how could Xinyu after going through such growth become a headnodding doll, and also rejecting Fengcheng repeatedly even though he was supposed to be "confused" and hesitant. It really felt like there was no more love at all... It pains me to say but it doesn't make sense in that case for him to take him back after a year and a half of solid rejection.

[collapse]

Then Fengcheng, his proud and arrogant nature
Spoiler

I know was weathered and overturned with regret after leaving Bai Xinyu to bleed on the Kunlun Mountain, but to the point where he himself became pathetically begging over and over after so much open rejection. I hurted so much for him.

[collapse]

Yes he had sh*t intentions at first (knowing the warnings, themes and author of this book, people please don't come and complain about it).
Spoiler

But he did so much for Xinyu when he was still confused about the difference between admiration and love. He reaches his hands out for him when they're scared and facing a scary task, he kisses him tenderly, he shared his last mouthful of water with him, supports him when it counts and physically restrained him from giving up in the gas chamber because he knows Xinyu can do it. Then he immediately goes Africa after a word from Xinyu, he gives him his bullet vests, his googles and his love, and his life for Xinyu and still it was not even enough. Thank god it was a happy ending otherwise I would’ve torn all my hair out.

[collapse]

Phew that felt good to get out of my system. This book antagonized me but revitalized me. It was so impactful, I haven’t felt this way since watching the Untamed.

Thank you. I will always keep the stories of these men in my heart. <<less

Another good work from writer, loved the way she described MCs army life... it's details are worth reading. We gain lots of basic information from the hard life of soldiers. It's not only about China, they all do same kind of hard training all over the world.. and don't drop it thinking army or politics.. the story is very fun read, even the army life chapters are funny and interesting.. don't miss out. 💗

It's been a while since I finished reading this and I've come back for a reread when I realised I never left a review on how absolutely wonderful this book was for me, so here I am.

Action, angst, romance, it's all there, and in perfect amounts. I love the character growth and the plot twists and turns in such a catchy way, it had me hooked from beginning to end. I strongly recommend this to anyone who's looking for something moving and realistic but safely still romantic in a fantastical... more>> way. ML is a downright as*hole in the beginning but so was MC, and they end up together so beautifully that I have no complaints with the rocky parts of their relationship. If I'm going to be completely honest, I can't read anymore. I was really looking forward to this story, but it's kind of too much for me already, and I've only read to chapter 10. The harassment and isolation cause me to stress, and I've already shed a few tears of frustration due to the treatment MC gets.

I get that it's probably supposed to be the "reason" that his character develops and matures, but it's too triggering for me. The indifference to the way he's being treated doesn't sit right... more>> with me.

To others, I hope you enjoy the read, but for me, I'm going to split. <<less

Spoiler

if he wasnt constricted with blood relationship and have no chance at all to the uncle, he will still be hung up with him. I hated how the ML only realized he loves MC after MC left him.

[collapse]

I also hated the uncle. He is said to be a strong, intelligent leader everyone idolizes him but all I saw is how weak and s*upid he is, running a mission when he is unwell and making everyone sacrifice themselves to save his ass?! Its good that MC left the army or he will be shadowed by the uncle till the end.

I love it when the MC ruthlessly rejected the ML when he came back to reconcile. I feel like the 2nd ML is definitely better for him but I understand when MC said that if its not the ML, he wont be in love with other guys. He started off straight after all. All the circumstances led him to be entangled with the ML and it left a deep scar/mark inside him that he wont be able to get rid of. Even though I dont really like the ML, I feel like MC really needs him and its good for them to be together after he said all needed to be said and done to the ML. <<less
