Chu Jian and Jian Bianlin are childhood friends and grew up together almost from when they were old enough to remember. Since long ago, Jian Bianlin has loved Chu Jian, and that has not changed even now that he is a highly popular idol singer and actor. To Chu Jian, though, Jian Bianlin is just Jian Bianlin—her good, good friend, like family, but nothing more. She knows about his feelings for her and feels guilty (for various reasons which you’ll read about) about not returning those feelings. This has put a strain on their relationship over the years. Eventually, her heart softens and she gives in, promising to be his girlfriend, to give him an opportunity as well as herself a chance to open up her heart to him. And so begins our male lead’s journey of winning over the heart of the girl he has always held in his own.

This novel was just soo beautiful! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! If you're looking for a really beautiful, fluffy, innocent, first love kind of romance novel LOOK NO FURTHER. Pretty much ML and MC are childhood friends and he's been in love with her ever since they were kids. MC is aware but doesn't reciprocate. At least not yet (hehe).

ML is the quiet type that doesn't really express his emotions that well. But gosh he really does love MC so much. And even though MC does know of his feelings, she never... more>> truly realizes how much he loved her until she started falling for him too.

One of my favorite moments that showcases how beautifully innocent and pure the couple is:

Eventually, Jian Bianlin detected her stare on him. Unable to move his head, he fl**ked his eyes in her direction. Nibbling on her lip, she smiled. When Jian Bianlin saw her smiling so beautifully, he could not restrain the curve that was also turning upwards at the corners of his lips. Chu Jian caught the expression on his face, and blushing slightly, she turned her head away to look out the window.

A quote from a character in the novel about the couple:

“Are they especially lovey-dovey, like the ‘you gaze at me and I gaze back at you’ type? You know, just especially innocent and pure?”

AREN'T THEY JUST SOO LOVELY PEOPLE?! Haha Anyways please read. You won't regret. <<less

This is a simple, unassuming story about childhood friends turned lovers. I have to say the second half is much much better than the first. I found the initial chapters extremely annoying owing to the MCs attitude and actions. Luckily it picks up and I even started to care about what she felt by the end.

What really shines through is the MLs sincerity and the author does a great job of introducing those tidbits from time to time. All of this in less than 10 chapters.

I enjoyed reading this quite... more>> a bit. A nice break from malicious scheming and what not. Great translation from hoju as usual. <<less

The type of story you would read as a warm chicken soup to leave a warm and fluffy aftertaste in your heart.

Short and sweet. Just enough to pass the time or as read to recharge when you're busy. Not too much drama other than between the couple themselves. Plus, the author is MBFB after all so you won't be disappointed with the HE and epilogue :)

This is the second Mo Bao Fei Bao's novel that could move me into tears (the first one is The Healing Sunshine). The story sounds simple but actually it's quite deep. You have to read it till the end to really like this story.

At the beginning, I thought FL is a bit heartless and I pity ML a lot but after reading the real reason why she rejected him over and over again, I begin to hate ML a bit.

Spoiler

The first reason is she's too familiar with him (they were together since they're both 4 years old) so she never thought him that way. And also, ML never properly confessed to her. He simply stole her first kiss and then acted like nothing happened.

But the major turning point happened when they're both in their last year of senior high school. ML beaten up FL's new boyfriend just because he couldn't promise to marry her (for god's sake, he's just 18 yo at that time so it's normal not to think about marriage yet). After that event, FL broke up with her boyfriend and slowly being excluded by her classmates.

So after learning about that event, I begin to pity FL instead. Her very first relationship was destroyed by ML because of his jealousy. After that, he deliberately and undeliberately prevented FL to have another boyfriend. Well, if I'm FL, I would reject ML too.

[collapse]

In the middle of the story, you'll also find out that ML is not perfect but that's what I love about him (a perfect ML is boring). He's not an expressive person and often keeps all his feelings by himself. Maybe if he confessed his feeling properly to FL since the beginning, they would be together earlier.

I'm happy that FL is finally willing to give him a chance (although reluctantly and out of pity). Despite the awkwardness between them, FL takes her new role as ML's girlfriend seriously and actively takes care of his needs. And slowly, FL starts to fall in love with ML for real. I'm so happy for ML because finally his dream comes true after years of unrequited love. <<less

I would give it a 3.5, the story is just a story of childhood friends were the ML likes the FL. Slowly the FL falls in love with the ML after so many years... The story is pretty simple, and kind of boring to me... Well, it just an okay novel to read... I was able to finish it in a few hours...

First of all Hui3r translation is gorgeous, I can see that the translator took effort to flourish the prose of the novel, which isn't common on translated works that focus more on intent rather than the beauty of the prose used, it's obvious Hui3r used words that weren't originally in the translated work but are better to make the novel more intimate and striking, I have nothing but praise for this translator.

Now, allow me to take a wild guess as to why everyone keeps complaining about the start of the... more>> novel, this is a matter of a blunder the author made.

Here's the deal, (as I see it and understand how it could have happened) among the middle point of the story, the author had the BRILLIANT idea of inserting little scenes of their past life, scenes of when they were little kids that had a direct relation and correlation to what was happening right in the moment, and they are wonderful scenes that surround the story and present it like a nice neat little bow on an already beautiful package to the reader... most of them (from the half point onward) are WONDERFUL and achieve everything the author was trying to make.

BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, it isn't the case with those same scenes in their initial interactions (the ones at the start of the novel) those scenes, most of them feel out of place and don't have any real relevance to what is happening right then in the story... making them feel intrusive and unnecessary.

Why?, because they break the pacing and the flow of the initial story, none of them have any kind of pay off and they feel like an afterthought.

What happened? well now, I'm just speculating, but it feels like the author started using that device way later on the first draft and noticed that there were no interactions from when they were little kids at the start of the novel, I don't know about you, but as a writer, I tend to go over and "edit" a few things in the first chapters before continuing with the story so by the time I'm finishing the novel, most of the first half has being already adjusted and edited to achieve an ideal flow and rhythm.

Why is this important?, because I can clearly see where the author broke paragraphs in the first half of the novel to insert those scenes, breaking the flow and rhythm.

If you don't believe me, skip the remembrances of the first half of the novel, you'll notice that it doesn't feel as annoying as it feels right now.

Other than that, the novel is realistic in a sense and it puts on its head the common trope of the "childhood friend" very well, it's a nice romance story and I really like it!, if only the author had either adjusted a bit more the flow and rhythm or used a separate chapter of their interactions as kids, it would have being so much better and that slight annoyance the reader gets wouldn't have found its way forward. <<less

Ah the ML won my heart.. At first, i’m kinda want to drop this book.. Because of the FL.. Ugh, why the girl was so stubborn and very s*upid. Where could she find a man who was better than BianLian? No way.. If there is, i’m gonna put him in the box and runaway with him. He is one of the MLs who can make my heart melt from his actions without words.

A wistful, emotions-driven masterpiece by Mo Bao Fei Bao. A beautiful, bittersweet first-love story with a happy ending. The flashbacks into their past together and their individual perspectives were well-incorporated and added depth to the story.
