I gave this 3 stars so far, and trust me- that's generous. The story has an interesting premise outlined in the prologue, which is immediately ignored to deliver a pointless, multi-chapter runaway farce instead, continuing on to pointedly evade the prior promise of content...

The GOOD:

  • The sister (Hestia) is actually kind of interesting. Honestly a few characters other than the MC show more depth/character in passing than the shallow, whiner, two-faced OP MC does on purpose. Even the father (made out to be a combat-junkie meathead) is actually revealed to be a caring, intuitive and wise leader (whom the Author/MC doesn't appreciate for 'advance the plot' reasons).
  • The writing is grammatically professional for the most part. This may actually be due to the translator, but 'whatever'...
The BAD:

  • A 'Let me tell you what I think is cool' type of 'Gary Stu' (wish fulfillment) story.
  • All the plot is forced. Yet another 'I titled this story, so stick around till I figure out how we get there' pantser series.
    Spoiler

A 'pantser' is an author who makes up a story as they go along. A 'plotter' plans things in advance. This author is 100% pantser from what I've seen so far.

    [collapse]
  • Plotting seems non-existent. Story seems to meander from one random event to another.
    Spoiler

Story starts out ok (prologue, ch1), then goes into a drawn out 'runaway' (escape from your caring family) arc. After that, it's strung together random events like a weak D&D session.

'Ok, You are in a new city, and have currency too high to spend... What do you do?'

'I try to make change somewhere'

'Down the street there appears to be a Jewelry store for nobles'

    'Good. I go there...'

(and so on... cliche alley brawl... cliche underworld connection... bring 'buy equipment for your adventure' chapter... ugh. seriously- this all happens)

    [collapse]

Author seems particularly averse to 'connecting the dots' within the world they themself are creating.

    Spoiler

MC and his sister supposedly play 'multiple games of chess' simultaneously- which should imply a deep level of strategizing, thinking ahead, and advance planning. That said, the MC also can't remember to bring a thick enough blanket in case it gets cold, or proper money to buy things with when needed...

There is a lot of this nonsense.

    [collapse]
  • Comparatively important events actually downplayed/skipped.
    Spoiler

Author has you read a chapter about MC opening a bank account. Almost 2 more are needed for him to rent a room. Then he robs a noble of all his wealth including a particular crown jewel. A chapter? Two? No. It happens in between two paragraphs. He admits to it (as narrator) after his roommate reads about it in the paper.

Yep- you read 27+ chapters leading up to him actually becoming a master thief like in the title, just to have it skipped over when it finally happened.

Wait- what? 'Civil Servant, not thief?'

    Oh yeah.

Well... he's become a thief for some reason.

Despite having a ton of money, and being under (lax) observation. I'm sure there's a good reason...

    [collapse]
  • MC is an idiot who's supposed to be 'smart'. A whiny idiot apparently, because (again) 'connect the dots'. Also, whenever the author gets bored, he makes the MC rude (in his head) to people (even when trying to be nice to him). So 'dumb' and 'two faced'... yeah- great protagonist...

    Spoiler

MC is set up as someone who wants to live a 'safe' life, but on one day he (himself) chooses to find & kill 40 demons within a few hours (as part of a different plan to facilitate his need to 'be safe').

Hey. If you can kill demons like others behead chickens- maybe you need to re-evaluate what's a 'danger' to you...

Later, when MC is sitting in the rain because he's homeless due to badly managing his planning/finances, someone offers to help him, and all he does is think $hitty thoughts about the guy while literally planning to use him then ditch him later.

You have rare demon cores and platinum, and still you need to be $hitty? ok. Whatever...

So many ways 'smart MC is dumb'.

    [collapse]
  • MC develops into (yet another) borderline sociopath character so popular for OP protags.
    Spoiler

Although the MC starts out seeming somewhat agreeable, by the time you get to around chapter 22, he 'reveals' himself pretty clearly as someone who has contempt for, and uses others. This is a bit after he's already shown himself to be unappreciative, selfish, and able to casually throw away his family relations for ridiculous reasons. Well, that's not entirely true as he possibly plans on using his family connections later to get into the military (or in some other way use his uncle to his advantage)...

Being super rich, and having the opportunity to appreciatively pay back his prior benefactor with a lunch (at least) - the thought doesn't even cross his mind until he realizes he can use them to get more info. Only then does $hitty MC take out money to pretend to act like a human.

    [collapse]
  • Painfully pretentious. Author makes excessive efforts to show how 'smart' his characters are, by stringing together nonsense assumptions which are supposed to be logic from flimsy, conveniently presented 'clues'.
    Spoiler

MCs sister makes a bunch of deductions based off the fact that the idiot MC stole a thin blanket. Why it's impossible for the MC to have acquire additional blankets from elsewhere I don't know, but the fact that the OP MC can't brave the cold and _must_ be comfortable... Why are these useful clues someone is able to make critical deductions off of? Not going to get into how hunting parties never overnight- so he can't possibly have proper equipment anyway, how the place he got the blanket from either only has a low number or they do inventory despite the assertion that everyone is a brainless combat junkie, how he knows absolutely no one he can 'borrow' from... How there isn't a spell that he can keep warm with? How he got 4 spells of different properties to put together (somehow- in secret) to 'fly', but nothing can help him not freeze?

The given deduction is just 'conveniently conclusive', because 'have to show off how smart' the sister is (though it's really more 'how dumb the brother is').

Not even going to get into the horrible timing for his 'escape attempt' (which the author tries to 'smooth over' (explain away) later with some flimsy nonsense...)

    [collapse]
  • Painfully over-dramatic. Author makes small events an excessive showcase of show-off nonsense
    Spoiler

The 'Runaway' section is 13 chapters. You know what's normally interesting about 'runaways'?

    - What was crappy about their home life that they had to runaway. Usually physical, emotional or other (even worse) abuse. Being oppressed/controlled, etc.

    - What they had to do to escape.

    - The interesting (or depressing) things they had to do in order to survive.

None of that is here. He's not even a runaway (according to his own defense in the story)

    - This MC is 'the chosen one' (next tribal head), and doesn't appreciate it. He's also apparently well treated and well regarded

    - His escape is 'he just left'- but the author makes a big thing of it like the MCs got a curfew and never leaves the house overnight/on a whim.

    - His 'survival'... There's no 'stakes'. He wants to leave for a dumb reason, to do something uninteresting, and at worst, he'll be brought back to the family that he abandoned and be 'forced' to have status, wealth, and responsibility.

Not even going to get into how he got a thousand+ people mobilized to look for his dumb ass- wasting their time & possibly endangering them because of his inability to properly talk to his father/be more clever.

It's overblown up nonsense entirely facilitated to create the (laughable) showdown between him and his sister- their lazily made-up 'battle of wits'.

It's dumb. He's also OP and has no perspective. He killed a dragon as a teen, but wants to leave his crazy (but close) family just to 'be safe' (to forward the plot).

    [collapse]
  • A$$pull power-up. MC conveniently gets more power/ability when needed to resolve issues. So many bull$hit explanations to plot resolutions & world canon.

    Spoiler

You definitely better not think about how 'intercepting' messenger hawks while supposedly fleeing ahead of your pursuers works (it doesn't) and definitely not about the rest of the 'change message content' nonsense (flying costs magic- but not in 'retcon, fix my oversight' mode- also, he is carrying the same writing utensil his sister is using to map things with? One that can be 'erased', right? Ok- whatever).

Obediently believe whatever the author tells you is supposed to make sense...

    [collapse]
  • Economic system is made-up nonsense. Who the hell puts coins in circulation that are 'unrefined'? Apparently iron doesn't rust- because it's fine to make coins with? Ok, whatever...
    Spoiler

Even worse, we get more 'author can't connect the dots' bs here- as the MC walks into a 'high class' jewelry store, and can't buy things with a single platinum coin. Oh, platinum is so valuable he could buy all the jewelry, and the store, and get change with it? Ok- so none of the jewelry is made with platinum? or gold? or silver? How big is this coin? What nonsense is this?

As a side note, Gold & Platinum have been pretty close in price, though the rates vary with the market. At one point Platinum was 2x the price of gold, and now (2021) gold is almost 2x the price of platinum (and has been 'more valuable' for over 5 years).

Real world values can have nothing to do with fictional assertions- but that has nothing to do with 'they make jewelry from silver, gold, and platinum, right?' which seems to not work here. Even if all the jewelry is 'only' silver, if the currency rises by factors as high as 10 (which would be more nonsense as 'refining' alone would be a 10x profiting process), all there needs to be is 1000 coins weight of 'refined silver' jewelry in the shop to offset his platinum coin.

By the way, old silver quarters (US) weighed about.2 ounces. Platinum (at it's highest) was at $2000 an ounce- so maybe a platinum coin could have been worth $1, 000 dollars (US) if it was 2.5x the weight/size for some reason.

Later on, the exchange rate is properly spelled out- it's dumb:

    5 iron= refined iron

    2 refined iron= bronze

    2.5 bronze= refined bronze

    100 refined bronze= silver

    10 silver= refined silver

    10 refined silver= gold

    100 gold= platinum

Do notice the uselessly huge gap between refined bronze and silver, as well as the dumber one between gold & platinum. Any kingdom with an ounce of sense wouldn't do this- further, even if the materials are 'that valuable'- size is controllable. There could be a 'small silver' and a 'large silver' (or other solutions) rather than a huge, useless gap where a person has to carry a ton of coins to get things done...

Worse, all that garbage just translates into some amount of 'pelks'. So why isn't all the money just 'pelk' denominations? In the US we call things 'dollars and cents. We don't call pennies 'coppers', ever, (though somehow 'nickels' maintained the name though most people don't know why (and they too were alloyed with silver once)), and very few people know what dimes and above are made of (though they were once mostly silver)

Apparently. 'refining' is where the money is at- god knows what it does to increase the value so much...

Anyway. 'Buying a whole store & contents?' Ok- whatever- but definitely not a jewelry store unless 'coin metal' is different from 'jewelry metal' or some other such nonsense. Is jewelry metal unrefined? Seems so. Makes no sense.

Bottom line? Author wanted to pointlessly brag some more and didn't do any research or use common sense. For someone writing a story with two 'geniuses' in it?... 'not very encouraging.'

Even worse, it makes the MC look dumb. What 'genius' can't properly prepare to purchase necessities? He even has the nerve to get snarky about it later when it's explained to him- though he obviously didn't know better...

Also, 'you're crazy rich on top of everything else- but you 'have to' run away?'

    Rubbish.

    [collapse]
  • Excessive Narrative Speculation- Another 'I can take this story anywhere by talking in my head' story. So much bias introduced into the story based on the constant onslaught of 'tone setting' narration. If you want to see what I mean by this, read the story, paying attention only to things that actually happen- the rest is the MCs selfish delusions (cough... excuse me) -- the rest is the author's forced setting/tone.
  • Narrative Bragging (first time I've used this one) - yes, the narration says a bunch of stuff that is really just bragging, but is presented as 'narration'. This layers more 'ridiculous' on top of this already over-the-top story. I wouldn't bother to note this (as many stories do this a little_- but this one does it so much!
  • 'Who are you explaining to?' narration- author has MC narrating like he's talking to someone (the reader I guess) with no set-up/explanation. Does he have an imaginary friend? Is this an Epic where the MC is recalling his days of youth? No. Author just wants to do it this way because it's easiest.
  • Lacks proper perspective/depth: 'I'm writing this now, so even though the MC's lived here for 16 years, and supposedly is 40+ years 'smart', he'll have to discover everything (that should be common sense) along with the reader as the story progresses'.
    Spoiler

This is one of the worst pantser story problems, where they fail to realize that 'convenient writing' and 'character knowledge' don't always run side-by-side. You can't just make up all your random $hit at will and expect that it won't impact your story cohesiveness/world canon. You really stayed on the outskirts of humanity for years and showed NO CURIOSITY AT ALL about 'the way things go in the city'? It's not like you have an organization in your tribe to actually visit, deal, and negotiate with them regularly, so... NO, WAIT- that's exactly what you have! How could you not have talked them to death? Got them to buy you books? etc.? This is why pantser stories suffer so often. Author focus is elsewhere, so implications, ramifications & logic/balance are totally overlooked.

    [collapse]
  • Lazy 'plotting' (if it can be called that) : 'Conveniently a bunch of lucky things happen, and now the story can progress quickly (despite how unlikely it is).'

    Spoiler

Chapter 19 is where the MC looks for thugs so he can get help to forge an ID (because 'hide my identity' is a needed cliche). Casually wrecking a few thugs (leaving them to possibly die) he gets lead to a thug barfront by the last, terrified thug (who quickly runs away) - and proceeds to luckily perform 'this is the pass-code to meet the hidden leader' accidentally. Worse, he then proceeds to circumvent magic casually, and subsequently request a bunch of things he needs, which are all near immediately delivered despite the fact no one should want exactly what he asked for but him. Yep, they also forge IDs, but seems he'll need to do the magic himself, because (as professionals) they haven't deciphered the protections (despite it kind of being their job/area of expertise) -- but the MC? He's sure he can do it as he 'casually looked at an ID for a minute or so', and I guess this is similar to... 'something he learned while sitting in a remote village, wishing he had a desk job?'.

Oh, sorry- just more 'I'm this powerful, let me show off' nonsense. At this point I would have preferred if he could have whittled it by hand alone like he started out to do...

    [collapse]
  • Cliches- A bunch of them, strung together.
  • After ch 20, 'Plotting' is 'whatever pop-up events the author is running with that day'... (incohesive hodge podge). Lots of trivial minutia handled as if this were suddenly a 'slice of life' story- only without any aspect of interesting character interaction or development. Each chapter makes a big thing out of trite events that could be a paragraph if not a sentence instead of the whole chapter/half chapter it turns out to be instead.
    Spoiler

We rode on a train. We went to the bank and I opened an account with my fake ID and didn't get caught. I went to the realtor to find a place. (etc.)

Now these could actually be interesting, but the author makes it clear the MC doesn't want anything to do with people, and is just doing things on his way to his 'safe civil servant life'. Nothing special really happens. These are all just opportunities to describe the world (mostly close to modern in many respects, but uses magic instead of tech), thus allowing the illusion of 'story progress', while (more importantly) increasing word count...

    [collapse]
  • Wonky naming all over...
    Spoiler

Sister is named 'Hestia' (virg*n Goddess of the Hearth (Greek)).

Brothers are 'Galahad' and 'Gawain' (King Arthur & Knights of the Round Table (English))

Wanna-be Empire over-throwers are random zodiac signs (Scorpion, Libra, etc. (Babylonian))

Just all random 'whatever the author (or translator maybe) thinks is cool'.

    [collapse]
  • Useless pop culture references that add nothing to the story (for some reason).
    Spoiler

I like Naruto as much as the next guy- but who cares about/remembers Itachi? (the tag-on traitor big brother/'mu*der of crows' of the less cared about traitor Sasuke/'giant hand winged freak') ? Not even going to rail on about 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure', just wondering why the author thinks the audience should know these things...

    [collapse]
  • Borderline fan-fiction (or whatever you call the casual ip theft of 'borrowing' the force balance push from Skyrim).
    Spoiler

Cramming 'Fus Ro Dah' into your story because you think it's cool?... Yeah, whatever. Too bad it totally doesn't fit with anything else done so far.

    [collapse]
The Different:

  • Nothing. Even for yet another 'I'm so powerful, woe is me' story, this doesn't do anything notably different or well.
Overall I'm trying to keep reading this in case it gets better. Honestly, the author's tone is pretty much set- so I'm probably wasting my time-- but let's hope I'm wrong...

I give every novel about 5~10 chapters to see if it is really good or just shit. There is a very good chance if a novel is on Webnovel website, it will have low rating. And if it is a Wuxiaworld novel, it will have a higher rating. Now I aint saying all the novels are like that but most of them do. Somehow this novel slipped through my pre-check. I see many "reviewers" coming in to save the day in here. Kindly check their other reviews and you can... more>> spot a pattern here. I am not pointing fingers at any particular, do your own research, But I have already highlighted many "reviewers" on this site and try to avoid the novels that are highly promoted by them.

Translation quality => 5/5, the translation is done smoothly, as far as I have read, there havent been any weird words, in my book that is good enough.

First Arc => 0/5, the most interesting part of the novel is usually the start. HAHAHA, its pure shit. The reasoning and everything that is said is much fking forced. The story is too dragged out even in something so small, I dont know how it will turn out later.

The MC => 0/5, hmm... I hate whiners. Let me say this, the MC is a basic b*tch. I like goody too shoes MC, I like edgy MC, I like "I will kill your whole clan bcoz you looked at my funny" MC, what I dont like is that MC acting like a third rate character and act like a little b*tch, when they just a low level thug in their mind.

This novel has a very good premise, I thought that it would be somewhat like the movie 300, turns out its more like the parody that came out for it but without the comedy. No jokes hit, the scenes are verrrrrrrrrrrrry dragged out.

In the end, I hated it, gave it a fair chance but its sh*t and dropped it like one. <<less

Okay so this is the first time I'm actually spending a bit of my esteemed effort and I can't still believe I'm doing it just to make a rant. In any case, I was initially attracted to the storyline of the earlier chapters.

Spoiler

The dynamics between the characters (especially MC and his sister) is pretty good actually, and I was really hooked on the runaway arc (the 1st chapters arc) because it did actually portrayed a very interesting turn of events. I did felt the sentiment that our MC must be quite an intelligent person from how he played that 9-dimensional chess with her sibling, and I had hoped to see more of this. HOWEVER. Right so umm, time passed by and things happened and we get to learn more about our mc's personality and stuff, and like I'm only in 30th something chapter and judging by the novel info this book is actually pretty long, but I'm already hating him. He is so dreadfully immature, insensitive, self-centered, and it's like he's innately a mean person? I mean, I can ignore the part where he leaved his village (despite getting selected as his father's successor) because as he said, he wants a peaceful life. But stealing from other people is simply rude. The book seemed (imo only) to be justifying his actions by having the victims corrupt nobles or something (lol I forgot already) but does it make things any better. Dude he's got plenty of platinum bars already! Also right, he did justified his actions by portraying his stealing as a way to distract these guys (??? An organisation that deals with the kingdom's money and stuff) that he was simply pissed off because I forgot the reason but I remembered it was pretty childish, and ah, he also made this distractions to steal something like the answer keys to their civil exam thingy. So he did all that stuff just to cheat? (And I also found it bothering that he is always so edgy with the guy who's trying to be nice with him, and keeps calling him a sucker meh)

[collapse]

Ughh so what I wanted to say is that I might be overreacting with these kinds of stuff, and you are free to try this novel out. It has humor, enough worldbuilding, and justifiable expositions that might keep the readers entertained. I may be wrong about my rant actually since I'm just on chap 34, but the way things are appearing, I can't just bring myself to like the protagonist. <<less

Its fun novel that made me laugh almost from the start. Please dont start reading with expecting some deep dark drama here. You should read it if you need light humor.

People have given bad reviews beckause they find some situations here impossible in reality. Well I have to agree that this cant happen like it does in the novel but thats really not the purpose of this story. There is reason why this novel has comedy tag on it!

MC is reborn with memorys from his last life in modern Korea... more>> and just wants to make true his last life wish to have safe life as civil servant. But beckause of his new family he ends up as very op battle race person who has not gone out of his op family/town mountin where magic is unstable and supressed. He is very smart (magican in a warior town) whi has issues beckause his dream and his reality cant mix. Also the last 16 years living in battle village has changed his habits from norm.

Now how he goes about stubornly still working to make his last life dream come true is really funny. In the end even empires leaders have a headache beckause of him.

In his home town he could not use magick freely and all everyday stuff is 100 more durable. Outside of the mountin he is like elephan in porcelan shop and has to learn deal down stenght and magic. So he is op but cant use his max strenght easily untill he adjusts. Lot of people forget this fact and get mad that he does not win all stuff with one swing of his hand. Updated at chapter 111:

Now the novel quality is not very stable - at least for me. It has several arcs. Some follow side characters not MC. For me its bit distractive. I was even little disapointed for a time. But its shaking up agen and now later chapters are good agen. So if you feel that the novel gets booring you can skip that arc and read on as it gets back on track after it. So even if I may not like all the arcks I just have to read this one to the bitter end as some parts of it truly deserve 5 stars. <<less

Despite being a Korean novel, it's basically one of those Japanese isekai novels where the MC is overpowered beyond belief and just wants to live a peaceful life, but doesn't know common sense in the world, blah blah. There's some wacky hijinks and concealing power and whatnot, but overall the novel has very little plot and is just light-hearted comedy.

Whether you like this or not depends on whether you like that kind of novel and that comedy. For me, it was just kind of meh. I read it, it was... more>> ok, I guess. Author likes to make pop culture references, too. This comes off as a bit cringey. Shouting Fus Ro Dah when firing magic, stuff like that.

I still can't quite understand why MC is trying to be a civil servant (from what I can tell, he didn't particularly like it in his past life, anyway... he mentioned how he didn't actually like doing papers). His defining traits are his OP-ness, modern-ness (meaning, being from modern times), his "smartness", and his desire to be a civil servant. Unfortunately, MC's inner monologues meant to show off how relatably modern he is also come off as a bit whiny and entitled.

As the story goes on, it gets more and more evident that it's not really meant to be taken seriously:
Spoiler
    • MC forgets to bring blankets, and the money he brought with him is too valuable to buy things normally (each coin is worth like a billion dollars or something). How did he forget about this? He was in a hurry or something, I dunno.
    • MC decides to be an undercover thief and steal valuable things from important people. Why? For the hijinks and politics, of course. What happened to wanting a peaceful life? Uhhh...
    • MC decides to cheat on the civil servant exam. Why? Because he doesn't want to score too high on it. But if he's smart enough to know the answers, can't he just get some wrong on purpose? Uhhh...
    • More characters are added. Each has only a few defining characteristics, which isn't a bad thing, but they don't really have interesting interactions with each other. They also feel a bit cheap and cliche: the one dude who looks old but is young, the overly nice guy who's also super dense, the nice guy's sister who's an extreme cynic, the naive shy guy who wants to be a knight, etc.
    • MC can magically decipher and forge IDs. Technically this should be very complicated, but of course MC can easily learn how to do it by looking at it for a bit. Yeah, he's that overpowered.
[collapse]

I mean, overall if your suspension of disbelief allows you to brush over all those, it's not too bad. But I guess mine's not that strong. It's ok, but feels slightly forced. <<less

First of all, I would like to say I mostly agree with the comment by "bloggbigg" who wrote an entire bible to simply say "I didn't like the novel". As I rather not type out a bible I'll settle for a more digestible version of sorts.

The title is known as "My Civil Servant Life Reborn in the Strange World", which might imply our protagonist trying to escape from his predicament of a dangerous life to a more stable cushy government job.

The main issue I had with this whole novel was... more>> your protagonist started out as a level-headed talented individual who just wants to get away from a dangerous environment and live out his life as a government servant to being quote "Borderline sociopathic". There is a difference between a carefree person and an as*hole on a power trip. Clearly, our protagonist is the latter. He has little to no conscience and will do as he pleases with absolutely no regard and consideration to the well-being of others. I would not have minded if the character had a reason for being so or his alignment was evil from the start but he just comes off abruptly all of sudden as an unlikeable character out of nowhere.

Anyways back to the main story if there was one, if the story from the start to the end was likened to a straight line, you would have a bunch of scattered sticks pointing in roughly the general direction. The author likes to include many side stories, but they all don't tie together well enough or serve a singular purpose of building up to something greater, neither were they written well enough to serve as an explanation or depiction of the lore of the word. The main story was also rather loose, you don't really feel a sense of progression of the story when something happens, or when it happens you have that disappointed thought of "that was it?".

I had rather high hopes for it, it seemed so promising at the beginning like the endless meadow stretching in all directions, lying distantly beyond the grassy plains were untold adventures that stirred the hopes and dreams of man. But its all but gone up in ashes. <<less

MC is tr*sh. I had great expectations for the novel. But I already want to drop it at chapter 21.

The author is trying to portray MC as a relatable guy which came from our time and was having a hard time (or so he thinks) adapting, that was good at first but after a while he just seems like a whiny baby. Plus his personality is that of a scum. Not Kazuma from konosuba like scum, but more like a third rate villain like scum that portrays himself and thinks... more>> of himself as a good person.

I don't know if he gets better but upon reading some of the reviews, I gave up.

I don't recommend reading it as after the runnaway scene it would into a waste of time. <<less

I think the story itself has decent plot, good set up (though I suppose may be a little cliche) and if handled well would be really interesting, and I think the author (or maybe translator) is good at story telling. That said I'm going to have to agree with other reviewers here and say the story started out good and proceeded to go downhill.

My main gripe is the MC (and from the looks of the other reviews, a lot of ppl seem to agree) : I am okay with an... more>> OP, mildly Gary Sue kind of character—if he was fun to read! Our MC honestly comes off as a little too petty, unreasonable, and honestly just plain rude.
Spoiler

As others have pointed out, why the heck does the MC think it's a good idea stealing from nobles, particularly in such a high-profile way, when he is trying to avoid being caught. It's explained away as just the MC trying to make the Prime Minister occupied but still doesn't seem like a smart move and most of the nobles he steals from he hasn't any decent reason to do so (e.g. Count Druval who he planned to steal from BEFORE learning the count was involved in corruption).

Him living so close to 'imminent danger' is also kind of weird as well. His desire to work as a civil servant is explained as him wanting to have something to do and job safety/security, but he could really be doing anything else and be in a safer position (because he has enough money to fund whatever lifestyle he really wants anyway).

I can deal with arrogant protagonists, again IF they are likable and this one is really not. Take for example when he meets the character Lisbon. For the subsequent chapters our charming MC smugly calls him a sucker and his sibling duo the crybaby siblings. Yes Lisbon is a sucker, but that sucker also just helped you from sleeping on the streets and gave you warm food to eat. Another example would be when the MC is upset that the treasury staff are a little rude, when it is really the MC's fault in the first place for making them constantly work overtime (and therefore be not in the best mood when a 16 yr old comes up to them to register for something while they are drowning in work), and of course just for the he has to proceed to make their lives even more difficult.

[collapse]

Overall I didn't love the protagonist but he would've been bearable if I found the rest of the characters likable as well. I didn't love most of the characters (to me they came off as either selfish, petty, whiny or all of those at once), and the decent ones were really just the flat nice characters who barely get screen time and are also constantly being half-insulted by the MC.

As I said before I think that the way the story is told is rather capturing, while others may criticize it, the initial chase was really interesting to read in my opinion and seeing how the different characters interpret the situations going on in the story (particularly with the MC not always being right). That said I will have to agree with other reviewers in that reading the story can also read like some kind of textbook. Some things are really weirdly detailed, or reiterated to the point that you're sick of reading about it, other things are never really explained (e.g. Characters and buildings appearances) make it hard to imagine what's going on.

I think this point about the buildings is especially note worthy, I legitimately am unsure about what the city is supposed to look like, there are trains and watches (what seem to be wrist watches rather than pocket watches at that), etc. It's hard to place is what I'm getting at.

Spoiler

Other than that I have seen some comments on the naming and the pop culture references. I will admit the names not having consistent theming can be a little jarring but not really worth mentioning, beside maybe being a little unoriginal. The pop culture references don't bother me and I would generally find them quite fun (if not for the fact that I recognized pretty much none of them)

[collapse]

My closing thoughts are I'll probably revisit this when more chapters are out. I don't really recommend it, but if you're interested in the story based off of the summary it doesn't hurt to give it a try. <<less

MC left his village of trouble makers in order to settle in the imperial capital for a "peacefully" relaxing civil servant's life while hiding his identity. But our genius 4 decades old MC decided to hire a room in a very sensitive location & be a part time thief. Stealing from the powerful nobles.

Am here to read about an op civil servant's life with his battle maniac family, unfortunately it's a mesh mash of other popular stories in an annoying way.

Well... tbh... this is boring and nonsense, I don't get what MC is thinking, I started reading this because I thought MC is similar to cale from tr*sh of the count's family but no this guy here is just downright dumbass, starting 5 chapters were entertaining but as the story goes it gets boring, the plot is just everywhere and you can't make sense out of it, he is tr*sh because he even tr*sh talks about people who genuinely tries to help him and doesn't even feel grateful for it... more>> and leaves them in the middle, I don't even get what is his point of running away? Like at first I thought he ran away because of the thing they do like fighting dragons at 12 and whatever, but as I read the story it shows that it's only his father who does that and everyone I just naturally strong in that village due to the environment.

After that I thought maybe he was traumatized because they literally sent a 12 year old to fight a dragon but no bruh, he actually killed the dragon who no one can, he got all op and it's not like surviving there was any hard so why run away? You are already over that thing and became an adult, so why run away? I don't get it. His reasons were that he wants to live peacefully alright, but he thinks he will find peace while working for the empire? Seriously? His father was about make him chief head basically desk work is all he had to do and still he ran away? He wants to survive but exactly from what is he endangered? He is literally the strongest in his village apart from his father so who is gonna endanger him? His family? Is he mentally shit? Plus he is bashing the poor guy who helped him so he would not sleep on the bench in his head? How ungrateful!! I was an idiot to even think that he was similar to cale even if it only lasts till 2-3 chapters, cale is/was never ungrateful like him, if he helps then he get something from it and if someone helps then he pays for it twice. Plus he had reasons for his each step ah how can I compare them (ノ`Д´) ノ彡┻━┻

I gave it two stars because I was generous enough, I don't think it deserves any stars and I have every reason to say so, the only thing good about it is the translation and nothing else aish. <<less

I think, to talk about this novel, I need to start with its content, because of the misleading title. Of course, there are some slice of life moments, but at least 60% of content here is pure fantasy action. I want to praise it as a comedy, because comedic moments are truly great here, but there is at most 5-10% of them here - they are tightly concentrated and most of the story is told too seriously to call it a comedy. The rest is equally divided between adventure and,... more>> finally, slice of life. Everything is well written and generally pleasant to read.

I'm very happy that this is not a harem. Main character gets close to only one woman and the chemistry between them is great. The rest of the side characters aren't bad either and are plenty in number.

In general, this is a perfectly executed generic lighthearted isekai action-adventure with an "evil cult/demon king" plot, where the main character's role is a great mage. If you are into this kind of stuff, I'm sure you will love it.

I immensly enjoyed it, and will re-read it at least once in a few years. <<less

The premise was quite attractive, in fact it started out quite good with all the mystery surrounding the world, characters etc.

But pass the initial introduction everything just becomes bland and hard to comprehend, at one point you don't really understand the civilization level of the setting. For one the author has focus on interaction based writing, not all that bad but throw in otherworld fantasy and almost zero world building which at best is just a sloppy mess just creates confusion.

To elaborate, let's put it this way, the author explains... more>> things in a matter of fact manner, he gives 20% of the description and leaves the rest to your imagination. At first it was good, so we imagine a medieval fantasy (based on the terminology and how societies were depicted). But then we get more modern items which were not explained as magical or scientific in nature, and that's just the surface of things.

The writing is disorganized and cluttered, there is zero change in the authors writing style and he makes random time skips from pretty random events and changes focus randomly. The story in my opinion would maybe be a good manhwa or animated/real life drama, where we the audience could use the illustrations or visualized scenes to understand the story.

To make it clearer, imagine if one piece was a novel, and the whole scene of Gomu Gomu Jet pistol was simply done in, "I used Gomu Gomu Jet Pistol which knocked out the enemy I am facing!". No explanation on how the move works or looks just it's name. Well you'll see a lot of that in the novel. Just imagine a plethora of imaginative ability names having no proper elaboration on how they work or look. The worse part is some ability names are only one word.

Characters are quite decently made but again, lack of proper descriptive writing leads to readers having to fill in the gaps with their own understanding of cliché's etc. The method of writing character arcs to understand a character is not bad but the authors method is quite- complicated to say the least. From the onset we can see he wants to tie in everything together quite beautifully but execution again created a complicated way to understand characters. We are not properly introduced to characters making them appear random add to that adding more and more characters continuously makes it hard to properly grasp the whole dynamic.

That may be hard to understand but to put simply every character is not fleshed out, we always learn something new about the characters almost every chapter and their roles are not set in stone. On paper it sounds like it can make a good dynamic story but imagine remembering the unconsolidated characteristics of 15+ characters, some forgotten but still appearing from time to time. That makes the story hard to follow and requiring frequent back tracking no matter how focused you are in the story.

Finally the MC, the start of the story made the MC appear calculating, but as the story progresses he's become more petty than anything. His first action was to bankrupt a noble who was rude to him (no spoilers on how). Then after that he just started becoming a thief stealing from corrupt nobles, how he uses the riches he stole is not delved on as the MC just wants to live a normal civil servant life which is counterintuitive to his original personality which again is not set in stone.

And here is where conflict occurs, the MC's motivations, goals and personality is not set in stone despite it being stated outright. How? The MC states his core goal but deviates for random if not BS reasons, worse than JP level bullsh*t mind you. Moreover the MC acts like the typical, badass disguised as an idiot.

A lot of things doesn't make sense in the story, how and why things happen are all convenient and the MC is a Gary Stue among Gary Stue's. I don't dislike such archetypes but this is one of the novels that take the cake for relying on Gary Stue's. The author just uses that as a reason to avoid plots he doesn't want to tackle so we have this weird dynamic of things that should happen don't because the world (Author) is on the MC's side.

Here the main problem is that the author seems to have no idea of how to progress the plot for the most part and sometimes he just found out how. Think of it as an exposition part of the story shifts suddenly to the resolution and the rest of the story was described in a flashback or something.

Overall the story had a decent premise and a story that could have been great but execution was dull and unimaginative. This is probably the authors first work, heck I probably got infected by the authors writing style in this review. A style that writes whatever comes to mind and hope it comes out well.

P.S. If you understood what I was trying to convey in the review, rejoice, you can read the story and understand it! I tried to copy the style of the author, if you can read through this review without scratching your head in wonder this novel is for you- but if you saw the flaws and found how confusing the review was I could only advice you to avoid this novel as it may give you a headache, which is the last thing you want to have when reading a random piece of literature on the interweb. <<less

Downright illogical story narration, our protagonist is an idiot go goes along the flow even though he doesn't want to. He had the power to leave peace and quiet life but choose to become an idiot or Mascot character who doesn't have a f*cking "NO" word in his dictionary. His every move is illogical it was like author is writing for namesake only.

He doesn't want to stand out okay he has the capacity to hide his ability but that **** Au*** he keeps on getting mentally challenged patient as friends... more>> (More like he is a doctor and other are his mentally ill patients which he tries to avoid but it is his job to do so that's why he entertain them).

And who in the hell let a office worker do physical and magical stuff it totally like "What ever MC choose to do to hide his identity a f*cking plot will be there to uncover it". This really kills the mood of the novel.

And the MC is no.1 ret*rd for making friends with ret*rded character totally a common copied scenario of this type of novel.

Even though it's concept is copied or similar to other of this genre this one is a wastage of time.

Here is a little spoiler not much

Spoiler

MC becomes a thief but for what just for show it was f*cking irritating to watch that explanation his entic were total crap it was like haha I am living a ret*rded peaceful live let's become a robber at night. He is aa total scum, a garbage, a human debris, lowest scum that a gangster. Gangster will look cute in front of this ret*rded protagonist who contradict himself by giving annoying reason.

After becoming a scum he can leave peacefully but no this scum wanted to become a civil servant for namesake its like someone following after big brands name like a obedient dog. This ret*rd just make himself entangled in his own obvious mistake like all the ret*rded Japanese anime MC

Hmm...

Something isn't right here.

Objectively speaking MCSL is an above average comedic slice-of-life novel with OP protagonist without any glaring flaws and isn't worse than similar good novels of the same genre.

... more>> Idk why top reviewer is complaining about everything under the sun and other strange dudes are talking here about their own unfulfilled expectations and basic premises that exist only in their own heads but they obviously ruined the overall impression of this novel.

Hopefully I'll be able to clarify things a bit.

I will not go into unnecessary details and will simply list some pros and cons.

Pros:

Good world building. Though nothing new or special, the concept of powerful politically strong empire + swords and magic + monsters and demons + battle races were integrated with no problems.

No cheats / system or even a status window, but power classification is still here. It is more or less logical and comprehensible. MC became OP on his own. In current trend this novel is like a breath of fresh air.

Mc's alignment is chaotic neutral. He is cunning and extremely vengeful, but not without a bottom line.

Quirky characters. Normal and average characters aren't the part of the story. Most of them have some kind of unique trait that makes them special and memorable.

Plots and conspiracies. Though it's a slice-of-life novel there are some interesting mind games occasionally here and there. It helps to keep you interested in the story.

Neither:

Extremely slow paced. Chapters are long and most events described in details. For example 'prologue' where MC escapes from his home took ~34 chapters. It's not that it's boring or wasn't fun to read, but such things depend on your preferences and what you're looking for in novel.

No romance. It's close to no romance for 230+ chapters. Though some potential heroines were introduced at first, they are more like friends, no romantic development was seen. It's 2/3 into the story and MC is still single without showing any interest in wooing them. The future situation is uncertain.

Cons:

Multiple POV. The story is already slow-paced enough but author is still using multiple POV method to show how the overall situation is developing, or what plots and conspiracies some a**holes are plotting. At times it can be really annoying.

It's better to wait for more chapters before reading everything in one go.

Other than these I can't really think of anything else. As I've said at first, it's a good novel without any glaring flaws. It's not that it's without mistakes or logical errors, but it's easy to overlook them and not pay attention. Most of the stories are like this.

If you like the setting and you're not against slow-pacing then give this novel a try. Its initial rating was much higher and was pretty stable idk why it dropped and became like this now. <<less

a kid grow up on a mother that always reminding him to have a 'safe life', to the point it was 'brainwashing' the child, because it was her dying wish.

In the kid head 'safe life' is to have a stable working income as a civil servant.

And the kid got reincarnated, training and got OP but still have the 'brainwashed' mindset of living a 'safe life' of civil servant even thought probably nothing could hurt him.

once he did manage to escape his village, he ends up in a town with coins that can basically buy the whole town. When he does end up in the capital, he didn’t need to steal for money when he had all those platinum (?) coins. The plot and scenes start forcing itself into the novel without really much explanation on why, which starts to make the novel a little hard to read and for me boring and unreadable. Don't get me started on romance subplot, I was expecting a story with adventure and exploring the world-building the novel at first had to offer, once it had a touch of romance I felt like the story was going to head towards a harem, and thus decided to quit reading. <<less

Started out relatively strong but from around chapter 50. Last 30 or so chapters that I read after that all have the same issue of nothing having any real weight to it. New plot points get introduced and then the good guys come bumbling along and solve it in a light hearted manner and then the point gets dropped never to come up again or have any impact.

TLDR: No real plot but if you can look past that and come here for OP character hijinks you'll probably be able to... more>> find some enjoyment <<less

The novel is pretty incredible and I always felt that there was some good reason behind every character. The novel's beginning personally feels slow paced to me though it was still interesting enough to read on. MC is OP but considering Reincarnation is cheating and he was born to the most powerful race in the novel on top of several other reasons I believe it's fair that he was what he was. You shouldn't read this if you like more good aligned MC's though. This MC is pretty selfish and... more>> pays back any form of threat to him.
