After his closest friend, the general Xie Shenchuan, left the capital, Jiang Mengjing began having strange dreams.

Dreams where he and his dearest friend were tangled together in lingering intimacy.

People in the streets called it fate carried across lifetimes. They claimed the two of them were the reincarnations of the brilliant general and divine physician who had once saved the nation a hundred years ago.

But Jiang Mengjing refused to believe it.

He and Xie Shenchuan had known each other for more than a decade. Their relationship had always been one of mutual respect and unwavering trust—nothing more than the bond between true gentlemen and confidants.

At least, that was what he kept telling himself.

The empire was crumbling. The court had long become rotten beyond salvation, swallowing the lives of countless capable people.

Jiang Mengjing had only ever wanted to be a physician.

Yet watching Xie Shenchuan ride north onto the battlefield stirred something deep within him. For reasons he could no longer ignore, he found himself wanting to do more.

After much hesitation, he finally decided to exchange the medical text he had spent over ten years compiling for a chance to enter the imperial examinations.

He thought burying himself in work would help him forget those increasingly dangerous dreams.

Instead, the dreams only grew worse.

“Tonight, don’t think about anything except you and me.”

Breath tangled with breath. Lips and tongues intertwined until restraint dissolved completely.

All the discipline and propriety they once clung to melted away in an instant, replaced by desperate heat and wordless longing.

The crimson bed curtains had long since fallen loose, candlelight filtering through gauzy silk to cast their entwined shadows into soft blur—until there was no longer any distinction between them.

Jiang Mengjing jolted awake yet again, heart pounding wildly, face burning red.

How was he supposed to face Xie Shenchuan after this?!

People often said that dreams reflected one’s hidden desires.

After struggling for far too long, Jiang Mengjing finally lost the battle against himself and shamefully realized—

He had completely fallen for his best friend.

And perhaps because of those dreams… or perhaps because Xie Shenchuan had unknowingly “conditioned” him over the years, Jiang Mengjing gradually began to suspect that his friend’s feelings might not be entirely innocent either.

Xie Shenchuan treated him far too well.

Yet at the same time, the man seemed trapped in constant internal conflict.

He had already done nearly everything lovers would do together, stopping only short of openly confessing. And every single time, he would casually insist with a perfectly calm expression:

“We’re just close friends.”

As though he were terrified of repeating the tragedy of their previous lives—one dying on the battlefield while the other followed in death for love.

Jiang Mengjing: Fine! I believe in past lives now, okay?! (>﹏
