Deemed hopeless by her family and that she was better off married when her fourth novel continued to be a flop, aspiring author Xiang Wan begins to doubt herself. While feeling conflicted about continuing her dream as an author, things take an unexpected turn when a dazzling guy appears before her and takes her to the police station.

“What? I’m the primary suspect in a mu*der case?”

A mu*der has taken place and the details are eerily similar to the details of her latest novel. The dazzling guy turns out to be a talented detective with a hidden identity who is assigned to investigate the case. From then on, her life turns topsy-turvy.

In the beginning, she seeks the detective’s protection by requesting to stay overnight at his place.

“Detective Bai, is it not the duty of the police to protect the witness when her life is in extreme danger?”

She ends up staying at his house overnight because of various reasons, such as—

Scenario 1:
Xiang Wan: “Detective Bai, you have no right to detain me…”

Detective Bai: “I remember you’re the one who requested to stay at my house?”

Scenario 2:
Xiang Wan: “There’s no need for that. Detective Bai, I can return…”

Detective Bai: “You’ve not cleared of suspicion yet. If something happens, at least you’ll have an alibi.”

Scenario 3:
Xiang Wan: “Why did you bring me to your house again?”

Detective Bai: “You haven’t released a new chapter today!” he said, enunciating each syllable, “I want to read your latest chapter before telling you of our latest investigations.”

“…”

This novel is quite intriguing. Despite it's slow pace and non existent 'active' romance, this novel grasped my attention. To the point that I wait for updates. It has its own kind of charm. The crime scenes are described quite literally but not in manner that make them vulgar or creepy. The romance is like an underlying current. Which is there but not tangible. You can feel it but not access it, Just like the mu*ders described in this novel. There is always this mystery going around. All the cases... more>> seems to be different pearls of same necklace. As if we could string them up, then we would know, “who is the master mind behind all of this". These characters are well defined. They have life of their own. They stand there with all their goodness or faults. They are not forced up or made to be overly impossible godly existence. They interact and behave in normal society's mannerisms, not at all like some superheroes. And last but not least all of those cases are interesting. They are horrible yet you want to follow them. Quite addictive you can say. Sometimes you as a reader can also relate to the readers those are mentioned in novel by our author. You do want to dwell on those cases, rack your mind up for possibilities but end up getting surprised by the follow of events penned by author. Our author is just as playful and mysterious as the mastermind behind all these incidents. In summary you won't Miss out much by utilising your precious time to follow this novel. It's worth it <<less

Story 4.5/5, TL 4.5/5

It's been some time since I've read a cnovel of this genre with good translations! I wish there were more crime/mystery novels translated! In the story, crime solving takes front center seat and is the main catalyst that spurs the MCs interactions/relationship. Plot is pretty thrilling and suspenseful with many twists and turns.

Similar to Ding Mo's 'When he comes, close your eyes, ' the series of criminal activities are not standalone cases but seems to be intrinsically interlinked with the MC.

I like the odd pair-up of an... more>> over imaginative, budding e-Novelist (FL) and the perceptive Detective (ML). This unusual combo made solving crimes take on a unique angle with slightly unorthodox means. No annoying side characters too. Which is a major plus. I hope I didn't jinx this. The ML makes me swoon, he is definitely the tsundere type, which is right up my alley. I have a feeling the romance will be a slow burn.

I hope as the story progress, it will gradually take on a darker tone and amp up on the mystery and thrill! <<less

  1. I really can't understand why webnovel stopped translating this It was one of the rare actually good FMC novel with the sea of tr*shy novel there

Honestly I was more for the romance than the cases, some of them were intriguing tho and the mystery surrounding the main characters was also an extremely interesting one. I just didn't like the common cases

The characters are really well developed and the development of some of them was more interesting than the FL, like the female friend of the ML, forgot her name. The character development of the FL was spectacular. She just went from a random poor webnovelist to a profiler, almost popular webnovelist. As for the ML... Sorry but he just seems too perfect for my opinion, it just didn't feel right. If we compare them at the beginning, I would say that the FL was the dirt on the ground while the ML was like a shining star. Thank gosh that things improved.

    NOW FOR THE ROMANCE :

This novel has one of the most natural, realistic wholesome romance that I've ever read. When I read others novels, I feel like the romance is pretty fluffy but kina unreal but this one got almost everything right : their banter, their activities together, the works etc Everything was built slowly and naturally. Everyone seems to complain about the romance but I think their fears and indecisiveness is much more realistic than some BS misunderstanding

However I disagree with ppl who say that FL is strong. Well, she is talented sure (in her field) and stronger mentally that at the beginning but she is incomparable to the standard op FL in most CNovels. She is relatable even if sometimes we can feel frustrated of her randomness lol, she has no halo
  2. Cons: casual misogyny, the disparity between the FL and ML (status, how the ML is always cool-headed compared to the FL, even in her own job
    Spoiler

she is a tr*sh webnovelist while he is n1 in the thriller genre, wins millions a month. Let's point that it's just a hobby for him while it's her freaking job

    [collapse]
), can the author please stop talking about the "difference between men and women"?? Some of it might be true but why the heck is it mentioned as a fact... Anyway I'm used to China's nationalism and low-key misogyny

I wonder why this is not popular yet! There's comedy and mystery plus romance. I have to say that I totally did not expect to laugh when reading this novel, where's the comedy tag! I would say that it's slightly creepy, not scary or anything but it occasionally gives me the creeps like those unknown phone calls in crime dramas lol. I suspect the novel is based on multiple crimes all connected to a big one targeting the FL. Looking at the amount of chapters (which is rare for crime... more>> novels, I think they are usually less than 200 chapters), I hope the suspense and comedy remains.

Edit: I found the indecisiveness of both leads in the romance department a bit draggy... there's now less focus on the mysteries and crimes, dropped. <<less

This story is a hoot. Out of all the stories I'm reading right now, this is the one I most look forward to updates on. The protag is easy to relate to, and the side characters are memorable and fun.

Imo, this is one of the only (tbh maybe the only one) novels targeted towards female readers being translated on Webnovel that is truly good. The rest are either the usual "assassin/miracle doctor transmigrates to cultivation world" or the typical modern "CEO x weak woman [who may or may not be reborn]".

Anyway, onto the actual story... at first, the few 20 or so chapters, while the story isn't cliché, it would seem as if the characters are: Xiang Wan (the female lead) seems to be the typical gentle, cheerful, pure-hearted... more>> woman at a struggling point in her life while Bai Muchuan (the male lead) is the peerlessly handsome, ice-cold yet perfect in every way prince. And in many ways, the characters of XW and BMC are just that, but as you read on further into the story, the author gives both characters depth by giving them dreams, aspirations, flaws, etc. It's to the point that while they still are cliché in some ways, they are also much better fleshed-out and closer to being "real". It was also nice to see a story about adults in their late twenties rather than teenagers or early twenties!

The cases themselves are quite interesting tbh, and as you read on, they seem to tie into each other. I found it enjoyable to see how XW gets herself involved into the policework while actually interacting with BMC, not just love at first sight. I do have to say that some aspects of the cases aren't always believable but not to the point where you want to hit your head.

Another thing I want to mention is that I very much enjoyed the fact that the "female rival" Xie Wanwan was much more developed than I was expecting - to the point where I think I enjoyed her character much more than the female lead, while still greatly loving XW. I did get annoyed at the ML's treatment of her tho - supposedly they were "really great lifelong friends" but once BMC gets together with XW, he completely disregards XWW - especially when she's at a really low point. I can understand not wanting XW to be feeling insecure about his relationship to XWW, but the way he treats XWW at some points makes me feel really cold and see him as a really bad friend.

But with everything, this story does have it's downsides: casual misogyny that can get tiring, the length of the story is too much (to the point where I got bored tbh), the typical over-describing of the ML's "heavenly looks" [vomits], sometimes the main leads don't really act their ages [XW-26, BMC-28] and more childish than they should be, and the indecisiveness of the main leads in their romance.

I want to expand on that last part, because I think it could greatly annoy people if they aren't prepared for it: While the romance isn't instantaneous and thankfully XW and BMC do interact before they fall in love, I wouldn't say it's slow-burn. From the start, there was a sort of attraction on both sides that quickly turned into the typical will they-won't they situation in which you get really frustrated because first it's BMC not wanting to admit their relationship, then it's XW who doesn't want to enter into a relationship, and it goes in circles for a while tbh. So yeah, while the romance is nice to read about and there isn't anything unsavory thankfully, the indecisiveness gets annoying.

To conclude, while it does have its problems, I feel this story is one that you can enjoy even if you do get bored half-way and drop it like me. I'd still recommend to read at least until the leads get together which is around the 230s or so. <<less

Feeling conflicted cause I think the details of the cases are interesting enough. The second case specially stuck to me. At first I thought it was familiar cause I might've read a similar case in some other crime-related novel. Then I remembered I read thisnovel before but it's not on my list and why can't I remember any other details in the novel except the second case? Like, not even the protagonists, I didn't remember them. Then as I read on, I got why nothing but the second case stuck... more>> to me.

As of c93 the whole narrative is a looped process of progress on romance, then the case, then a lot of unnecessary fillers, and then repeat. I came for both the thrill and romance but I can't help but feel both just aren't enough. As I've said before the cases are interesting enough and I like the details. It's kinda like a soft cake beside me that I occasionally take a bite of while reading a book, but this cake, although delicious, melts very very quickly in my mouth before I get to fully enjoy the taste.

In the first place this whole novel is mostly focused on romance. But even the romance isn't satisfying. Mostly cause the characters are confusing. I like smart characters, competent and professional, can be cold blooded is a plus. So MC, ML, and 2ndML should've been just right up my alley but no. As for why, I can only think that it's cause they're too inexplicably OOC than what should've been at the beginning of the novel.

Spoiler

MC for example, suddenly became talented in writing and criminal profiling right after the first case when she should've been an untalented, unknown writer with a small circle of fans. We can only say that this talent may have been triggered from the stimulation of the first case, pass.

But ML and 2ndML? Why and when exactly did they get so hung up on MC???

ML specially told his niece during an argument that his feelings for MC is so much more intense than his niece could ever think. But— why? When? How? I don't expect MC to have done anything extraordinary but ML is supposed to be cold blooded and MC's performance was really average during those times except the multiple paragraphs describing how soft, timid, and delicate MC's profile was. Could it be that despite how big all of china is, MC is the only soft, timid, and delicate woman? It was so OOC that being supposedly cold blooded, he just let MC (then undetermined mu*derer or not) into his own home, push and pull flirted with her, and suddenly so agonisingly into MC all in a span of 7 days. (The whole duration of the first case is 7 days)

Not to mention 2ndML, who's only real connection with MC was the failed blind date. He's the most cold blooded of all three. With all of MC's clear rejections, considering his character, he should've backed up. He's not even inlove with her nor is there any reason why it should be MC out of all women. So why is he still lingering around, chasing her?

[collapse]

Then theres all the loose thread that I'm guessing is supposed to keep up the reader's motive to read.
Spoiler

1. Why the MC dropped out of college. With how it was mentioned, I'm guessing theres supposed to be a big secret. Maybe the ML knew her back then, hence his speedrun falling inlove.

2. The cold case ML is supposedly still chasing (but it's so long been forgotten ever since he inexplicably fell inlove with MC). Probably got to do with why his relationship with his family is so wrecked.

3. The falling flowerpot targeted to MC since the first case. Foreshadowed it might be the mother in the second case but still no clear explanation why she should be targeted as early as the first case

4. The misterious ID with all the cringey comments.

5. Why the f*ck is MC entangled with these two cases??????? Coincidence? Plot convenience?? Something deeper???

[collapse]
Sure I was curious but it's all so dragging with all the unnecessary fillers; MC's conflict with ML's niece and aunt, MC's relation with other writers during the exchange study (?), the boring lengthy dialogues with MC and cousin, MC's ever-chasing daily updates, ML's ever-redundant "it depends on your performance"— heck, shouldn't it be illegal to give details of unsolved cases to unrelated personnels???

Theres so much unnecessary things going on, I JUST WANT LOGICAL ROMANCE AND mu*der.

I wanted to rate this only 2 stars overall + the blatant sexism but the second case is so interesting I'm dedicating another star just for it. <<less

I really like this novel, at first I only skimmed the first chapter. Turns out I'm hooked to this story.

Character is 5 stars

Mystery 5 stars

Reminded me of TV series 'CASTLE'

Usually, I only read Chinese novels with a theme betrayal, reincarnation, transmigration. I like this novel, I hope the translation will continue.

Awesome story. Realistic plot and characters. The romance so far is quite slow and I’m not greatly impressed with the ML in that department. I’m enjoying this immensely
