In a stormy, rainy night, Ban Xia takes in a small, battered lizard that crawled into her house through the window. To care for it, she accidentally spends all her savings, nearly leaving herself without breakfast the next morning.

From then on, every morning, she is astonished to find her home spotless and a steaming hot breakfast waiting on the table.

One day, the magical little lizard suddenly disappears. Worried, Ban Xia ventures into the rain to search for it, only to find a drenched man in a bamboo grove, scales still visible on his ankles.

The man lies in pain among the bamboo leaves, covering his face with pale fingers, his voice low and trembling, “Don’t come near me. Don’t look at me…”

Ban Xia respects his words and stays by his side, shielding him from the storm all night with her umbrella.

She doesn’t want to see him weep in winter’s cold again. She cannot bear to let him flee, scarred and broken, into a lonely world. In a world where true understanding is rare, without him, no one else could stand by her side.

It was a very sweet story. Most stories have a cold but domineering ML and although the ML appeared cold, he was very much a cutie! He’s so shy and lovely. The FL was also great! She so assertive, confident and clear about who she is as a person and musician and complements the ML perfectly. The traditional roles are reversed and make a nice refreshing read. Also, I’m glad it wasn’t overly long, just the right length. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful story, and well translated. I loved this. The story is simple but the emotions it evokes are complex.

I'd call this a love story with a little tragedy, a little slice of life, and a little joy. The FL and ML are each resilient, powerful, vulnerable and endearing in their own ways, and you'll find yourself rooting for them.

Beautiful story, well translated. I love that there were portions that made you think very deeply, and the best parts was the inherently positive view on life. Even potential villains he the chance to reflect and change for the better, instead of being portrayed very 1 dimensional as per usual C novel tropes.

Short and sweet romance with a touch of magic, set in a modern world. It's relatively slow-paced and light on conflict and drama. At its heart, this story is about healing, self-discovery, and learning to love despite the uncertainties life throws at you. The author does a beautiful job of immersing us in the protagonists' inner worlds, capturing their emotional struggles and daily efforts to follow their hearts. It's a story that blends musical poetry with real-life struggles, and it ends on a heartwarming, satisfying note.

Short Summary:

The FL... more>> is an exceptionally talented, yet impoverished student at a prestigious music conservatory. She's a gifted violinist but also willful, kind, and despite her talent, lonely. Growing up without a mother and with an absent father, she's always had to rely on herself, unlike most of her classmates who are supported by wealthy families. Her days are a balancing act of playing her violin from the heart and earning enough to survive.

One day, she discovers a wounded black gecko at her rental's window and, determined to save it, she spends her last bit of money taking it to specialist vets. To her surprise, the gecko not only survives but can also talk and take human form. Amused, she jokingly compares him to a frog prince or snail girl. Though the gecko is shy and refuses to be seen in human form, he shows deep care by preparing meals, cleaning, and listening attentively as she practices the violin.

Meanwhile, the ML lives an outwardly perfect yet empty life. Known as a rising star in the conservatory and hailed as a piano prodigy, he's lost the joy of music and is stuck in a robotic routine. After he gains the ability to transform into a small gecko, he's frustrated by his inability to control his shapeshifting and the rejection that follows. Desperate and on the brink of losing his "human side, " he leaves his cold, lonely home and seeks out the person who once gave him hope- his childhood friend.

As they live together, both rediscover the warmth of a home and the inspiration to pursue their music careers in their own way, expressing the true music of their hearts. Along the way, they fall in love. The FL must confront her vulnerabilities and embrace her feelings, while the ML struggles with the ever-looming deadline when he might lose his human form forever, torn between his desire to give himself fully to her while hiding his true identity to protect her.

Spoiler

There's a heartbreaking moment near the end when the ML is believed to have died, but don't worry, it wraps up with a happy ending. The ML gains control over his transformation, resolves his inner turmoil, and is free from family pressure, fully committing to a life with the FL.

What I Liked the Most:

    • The FL is hardworking, independent, and refreshingly true to herself. She's got a unique personality and a quiet dignity that makes her stand out. She's open-minded enough to learn from others but refuses to let their opinions define her. I particularly loved how she stayed true to her decisions and unconventional preferences.
      Spoiler

While her friends were all about "strong, protective men, " she boldly said, "I've worked so hard to be independent
why should I pretend to be weak to be liked by a man? No thanks. I just want a shy, gentle man who'll listen to my music and take care of the house." Another example is how she deals with family conflicts. Later, her father reappears, and we learn that she knew he was famous. But when she younger she found out that he had remarried, so she decided she didn't need him or his halfhearted "care". It was all or nothing.

    • The secondary characters and leads have rich backstories, and they actually contribute to the plot, creating a natural flow to the story.
    • What really stood out was the plot- while simple, it's not full of cliches or typical tropes.
      Spoiler

No love triangles, no forced drama, and certainly no villains. Instead, it's pure realism, where the people who wronged the leads are not evil, just flawed. The ending isn't about them becoming rich or powerful; instead, it's about them finding peace and healing as they begin a new chapter of life together.

      [collapse]
Life may not be easy, but the novel celebrates the beauty found in it, this is the story's core message.
Downsides or Warnings:

    • While this is a slice-of-life novel, some readers may find the lack of excitement or drama a bit of a letdown. There are no villains or major adventures, this is a gentle, introspective journey. Additionally, it doesn't offer a conclusive ending.
      Spoiler

It's a happy ending in that the couple is together and life is on an upward trajectory, but their future remains uncertain, and their circumstances don't drastically change.

      [collapse]
    • To fully appreciate the novel, some basic knowledge or interest in classical music would definitely help. The story's music-focused themes are deeply woven into the narrative, and readers without a connection to classical music might get bored.
    • Lastly, the magical elements are never explained or explored in depth, so it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief.
