“I shall serve you as if I loved you, my lady.”

An earl’s daughter and a lover of paintings, Riz, is told “Give yourself to me” by John, the temporary art gallery manager employed by her uncle. However, those words weren’t of love or romance, but because he wanted the “Holy Eyes” that could see the demons lurking in paintings which Riz had. Pressed into a contract by John, who was actually a demon, the response Riz gave was— that she was going to own a demon!?

This is a love fantasy concerning the painting of an unconventional young lady and a caustic demon!

Please do take the time to give this novel a chance, the translation quality is superb and the two protagonists are both witty. It's a breath of fresh air from all the Reincarnation stories (as much as I love the cliche trope) and I don't want it to be buried for being different.

  • Heroine is a sickly Noble girl obsessed with paintings
  • Both Leads have no filter whatsoever
  • A Deal With A Devil
  • Demon Butter (nagging caretaker, art history tutor, etc.)

From such detailed decriptions of religious symbols, to the heartwarming events that lead up to Riz and John's love. This story absolutely grasped my heart and played with it completely to the point that I could not move on without wanting more.

The translation is magnificent and the translators deserve the utmost respect, for without them, the story's true intentions cannot be revealed. The author wouldn't be able to express their inner thoughts through the writing, and their hidden language would disappear.

This novel is definitively a masterpiece, it would become my... more>> honour to have stumbled upon this and have the opportunity to fully submerge myself into the plot filled tales of our dear Miss Appraiser and her Demon. <<less

I do enjoy novels with art so this caught my attention early on.

But I don't have much to comment since I haven't read much, and will add more as I read

  • So far I enjoy the descriptions of art and how art appreciation is a deeper meaning/experience, and the idea of art can twist and come to life with the supernatural
  • The TL is doing great so far too.
  • I anticipate for the romance though

40% art discussions. 30% mystery. 30% romance.

The characters were adorable, the plot was gripping with fun plot twists, especially in the first volume, and the art commentary made me want to pick up painting. A lovely translation too.

Kudos to both the author and the translator!

I loved this story. The delicately implied humor, the little phrases here and there that hinted at complex worldbuilding, and most of all, the main character's unexpected personality. I loved it all. This is just the kind of understated, well-plotted, carefully written story that I enjoy the most.

Also, the translation was excellent.

This is an excellent novel! At the end I was despairing that there weren't more chapters (although each chapter is reallllly long).

I would like to thank the translator because of the exceptional work. Often lot of information and symbolism is lost in translation but the translator here managed to give us a feel of the work without losing its essence.

The plot is not very heavy but it's intriguing. The characters are well fleshed out and the relationship they share is very Interesting. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MAIN CHARACTERS. Anyways,... more>> it was a really good read so more people should try and read it. <<less

My goodness, this is excellent. The quality of the translation is very good, the worldbuilding is original as heck, and it’s tightly plotted and doesn’t d r a g the way some novels do.

There’s a lot of snappy dialogue, and the main character is deliciously sly and understated. She has realistic relationships with her family members, there’s interesting political stuff going on, and while the romance is subtle, it also doesn’t move along at a snail’s pace.

You really should check this out. You’ll be able to tell after the first... more>> chapter if you’re sold or not, and it only gets better from there. <<less

Truly amazing. C:

This novel has sophisticated language - I'd say it starts off with language similar to what you find in critical analyses done in an English Advanced course (which I found great in improving my vocabulary) when making you engaged with the plot.

Each chapter is rewardingly lengthy. So I read it slowly to enjoy it thoroughly. You really get s**ked into the conversations between the serene FL and devoted ML as they tease one another. :3

To top it off, the translator is beyond-talented (no grammatical errors, phrases or spelling... more>> mistakes that disrupted my reading; extra explanation endnotes for unfamiliar terms).

Overall, amazing characters, amazing plot. I highly recommend reading this. <<less

Man, what brilliance!

The writing is quite serious, so some people might find it boring. It's not quite my type either, but the ethereal beauty of the story was enough to tide me over. That, and the small funny moments. Those were great. Especially the little extra in the last afterword.

I really like how the MC's family is quite caring. They don't get much screentime, but they really have personality. Even the potential fiance had spice.

The MC and ML have the cutest interactions! Their bluntness is hilarious. Even though the story... more>> started out with a bit of a horror vibe, the ML pretty much got rid of that... Eh.

Quite a bit of painting analysis though. Not that it's bad; the author makes it easy for people who have no clue to understand. I felt chills from one of the descriptions because I was reading at night, haha. I'm weak. :D

Lots of religion, but the MC isn't particularly religious, so it wasn't really in your face. Just a cool setting. <<less

For vol 1: I'm in love with female mc's personality and also love the interactions with the male MC

But what actually made me stay and intrigued are the paintings, the way they described it and especially their interpretation. Im actually longing for a pic in the ln of the paintings but I think it would be much fun if it's according to our imagination (not unless it would be adapted to manga but still I think ln is the best). Ofc the unexpected twist also made me entertained

This... more>> is actually my second time to read a shoujo ln, I'm much more into seinen or shounen ln mystery or comedy like all mikage eiji's works, durarara, gekkou, henai psychidelic, hataraku, baccano and more... so I did not expect this to be so good.

Gotta go read v2

For vol 2: Ahh I love vol 2, it gave me goosebumps and lots of parts were spooky especially if you imagined something scary, but I gotta love the romance it was too sweet and cute that I want another volume. Superb paintings went in my imagination and mystery too. Overall vol 2 was much hilarious and funny even with those terrifying scenes. Anyway, john's name reminded me of yohane (jp name, means night wing or john) who acts like a fallen angel from LL, and while I'm at it, Riz (en name, means bright

I gonna say this is my fav shoujo ln, it is really unique other than other shoujo ln that got adapted to manga

I think im gonna read more of itomori-sensei's works <<less

I was looking for a light read short JP romance novel and decided to give this a try.

it was a good supernatural romance with some mysteries. I really liked the art descriptions, it felt like I was in art class. And the translation was really good, when I finished this I went to look for they’re other works because the translation was so clear. The plot and characters were also okay. There was many references and mentions of artsy stuff which felt like I’m in a appraising site. The romance... more>> was also sweet, it slowly showed how they are developing feelings for each other. So overall I give this ★★★★★.

this is how the story goes.

Spoiler

The FL Riz is a sickly girl who is a earl’s daughter and she saw supernatural things and had supernatural eyes. She really liked art and studied appraising. She was also a expressionless girl. And the ML John was a demon who was looking for another demon who killed his contractor. His former contractor was a priest at a church, it was a mystery why a priest would make a deal with a demon but it gets cleared at the end. So there were many religious and church stuff in the middle but it somehow still managed to be funny.

at first John was cold but he slowly warms up to Riz and he is really overprotective of her. So a fiancé for Riz comes, he loves a maid so he will try to elope with her, gets caught by John and Riz and they end up helping them elope. So in the end the church thinks John was the one who killed the priest who was his contractor so they will go looking for the demon who killed the priest to clear John’s crimes. In the end they get a happy ending and confess they’re feelings.

[collapse]

so in the end it was still a mystery for me that who was the painter named ‘John’ who drew a silver fish for Riz when she was a child, and if he knew that she had special eyes. But I guess maybe it doesn’t matter and it was supposed to remain a mystery. <<less

I love this. It's so good. I love the MC, I love the setting, I love the detailed description on symbologies and paintings, which add more layers to the world building, I love the supernatural elements, and I love the exciting premise.

The MC is apathetic, with no real interest outside paintings and their meanings. But she has a pretty good heads on her shoulder, and have a pretty realistic approach to things. And she's super cute. Rather than saying that this story is extremely 'cute' (although, it is) , I... more>> think the few bleak moments that's highlighted in here earns more of my appreciation. It's a pretty poignant, 'strange', and carefully crafted story. Some 'strange', supernatural part managed to give me goosebumps for its oddness. There are moments of cynical humour and banters that I totally dig. But it's never became too depressing and has a pretty light-hearted approach in handling them.

Some people say that this is pretty 'heavy'. Nahh, it's not. The description of the painting and its symbolism is just there to add a certain depth, but it's not going to lead to any dizzying discussion of philosophy. It's just there to look pretty and add a bit of "excitement", and I very much enjoy these depictions. Overall, this book is light and can be read in a passing. And again, it's cute. And this story ends where it should ends! Love it. <<less

Honestly, I don't understand most of the art descriptions in this story but I agree this is beautifully written and deserves its high rating. The plot is quite unique and all the characters are likeable. I thought that this will be a short story because it only has a few chapters but each chapter is surprisingly long. But it's not dragging and the ending is quite satisfying too (although it's still not enough for me). I really recommend this to everyone.

The story was too short for it to leave an impact on me. However, this was a nice light read novel and it was worth my time to read. The gallery demon's character was very interesting and actually underwent through character development despite the story being short.
I tend to skip the art appraising details because it seemed to be forced. I don't know if that's how art appraisers really view paintings, but at least from my perspective, they made art appraising 100x more complicated than it is. I guess... more>> this is to make the job look more professional and legit? It did not work for me though. *Skip skip skip* <<less

This a cute and sometime a funny story. The setting of the story is good. And there’s a lot of painting interpretation of god and religions, which is is quite interesting. I love the MC deadpanned humour and straight to the point attitude and the ML viper tongue. They are really fluffy and cute. It’s a short story which worth the time and the translation is very good. Finally there is a Japanese novel that doesn't use 1st person narrative!!! *throwing firecrackers & confettis in ultra celebration*

The wordiness, though, OMG. It tried so hard to seem poetic, to set up that mysterious ambience. But for me, those wordiness serves instead as a turn off. Idk how many times I roll my eyes at the long ass description about the symbolism of a painting.

Hey author, you made it up anyway, so just be confident with it! No need so many excuses or explanations 🙄

I guess I'm poisoned by C... more>> novels, I now approach J novels with caution and a prejudice 'ah it must be like the rest, so snobbish with a bad naming sense in attempt to be more Western' and 'hmm description is interesting, but it's Japanese, they must use 1st person narratives throughout the book'. Also the characters & the plots are usually... So uniform. The template of tsundere, yandere, loli, tsukkomi, the transmigration or rebirth, they always adhere faithfully to the template, there is never any interesting twists or variation. The same happened in this novel: the FL character, the ML, the plot, the wordiness, the try hard at creating ambience... They are all so similar to other novels.

Maybe it was because the subtle nuance from the Japanese language itself, that get lost during translation. But with so many Japanese translators, I believe that there is no way none of them is excellent.

So, I guess... Maybe i'll just stay away from any J novels. They might coin the isekai/saintess theme, but they could not develop it to the fullest. Quite disappointing, really.

But still 4 stars because: NOT A FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE!!! <<less

Very good, sometimes the themes were hard to understand. The characters were written lovely.

The rating is a bit low just because I had higher expectations and some concepts were hard to capture.
