In the presence of strangers, Han Chen was always handsome and cold, making it difficult for others to get close to him. He was like the frosted snow – pure, and slightly chilly. Yet, he was also like the river flowing in the dark night – quiet and moving. To many, he was akin to an unparalleled and untouchable god.

Only in the presence of Bai Jin Xi would this famous top police superintendent expose his deeply hidden shameless nature.

“Come and sit nearer to me, I won’t eat you. At least, not now.”

“I have never touched other women before. Do you want to check my body?”

“Bai Jin Xi, never ever leave my side. Every year, every month, every moment, every minute, every second.”

In her heart, there exists an obstinate old man – one who has tirelessly loved her throughout all these years.

Another thrilling and heart aching story from the author of WASL and WHCCYE! Likewise, Memory Lost is about mystery, investigating crimes through psychological means. But this time, our Female MC is also a mystery herself. Years ago, she got into some incident, resulting amnesia and even often forgetting small details since then as side effects. Like what she ate for breakfast and such... (Obviously, that’s where the title came from, so it’s not really a spoiler) Jian Yao of WHCCYE is smarter compared to her but fiercer and full... more>> of pride. She never admits her lost so of course, she hates losing...

Here comes our professional Male MC, as usual—the almost seemingly perfect guy. Popular, intelligent, good-looking... adding ten cups of ice for his coldness and loneliness. He’s also has his own pride and hates criminal psychologists resulting to conflicts with our maiden. He’s often expressionless.. Just lightly smiling.. Staring... Smoking.. Another mystery of ours that needs to be solve.

With witty and funny remarks here and there, plus the suspense of solving crimes.. I’ll generously give this a 5/5 but I think I prefer WASL and WHCCYE than this one. At least, for now. It’s still a few chapters anyways.. I’m patiently waiting for the update where you-know-whats-coming scenes. My ratings might change as it goes on.. Maybe 2/5... Or 10/5... You never know.

Cheers for our Author.

PS: I want an order of Xu Si Bai..... <<less

Seeing this author has some loyal fans, I decided to read a couple of her novels. They all have a common trope. And frankly it gets boring and repetitive. MC is always a smart, determined, virtuos girl with no flaws really. She always seeks justice and ofc is inexperienced with men (duhh). ML ofc is a typical Rich & Handsome fella who´s cold and impassive but gentle with MC. So cheesy.

And I suppose because of these characters I wasn´t particularly interested in their crime solving and found myself skipping lines.... more>> I think reading one of them is enough since they´re so similar to each other. It had a proper plot, but I was put off by MC and ML each time. <<less

A very nicely translated novel.

I never knew I could like a mystery/investigation novel so much. I can't be a good critic on the genre since this is my first novel of this type.

I really like the interactions between all the characters. It also poses a serious controversial question of where the line is between a good and a bad person... And the actions they take. It's a bit twisted, but I like it.

There hasn't been much revealed about the past yet (as of ch 42). Though I get a feeling... more>> there's a connection between the current case antagonist (T, serial killer) and the main couple.

You basically go into this novel knowing they're going to be a couple, but it's not clear whether they were the couple 5 years ago. All clues currently point to that conclusion however there might be a twist to it just to add some drama (please no).

This is a romance novel, but it's very subtle and the progress is slow. It focuses a lot on the crime cases themselves and builds the relationship between the two through quiet interactions.

I'm liking it so far and have given it a rating of 5 for now. <<less

Hats of the translators. Thank you for your hard work !!

I love this author's writing and her characters. The MCs are so realistic and true to their character. As humans we are not perfect so it's nice to see two characters who are so stubborn and strong in their view come together in work and love.

The plot follows as given in the summary, 2 lovers separated and reunited by fate and they do not recognize each other.

How Han Chen strives to figure out who is fiancee is, is just heart... more>> breaking? His reactions when he finds her.

Jin Xi trying to piece her memory while searching for the man who promised to marry her.

The mystery which has you biting your nails..

And best part. There's still more. I can't wait.. <<less

If you think this is just a story about romantic love, you will be mistaken. It slowly unfolds to reveal a bittersweet and cautionary tale about the antagonist and his comrades.

The writer skillfully combines areas of astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and abnormal and criminal psychology to reveal the complexities, weaknesses and imperfections of the human condition. It doesn't excuse or glorify crimes, but explores the negative impact of mental illness - the overwhelming feelings of sadness, loneliness and despair; the desire to be acknowledged and cherished; and the fear of being... more>> rejected, disappointed and forgotten. <<less

You know what, this is actually a little gem, an amazing masterpiece that gets little mainstream attention.

It's not your typical fluffy romance fare either because the couple in the story actually went through a life-changing event that literally made them forget each other. Not only that, there is a sinister group of serial killers that want to physically and psychologically tear them apart, never to remember their romantic past.

And of course, along the way, the couple who don't remember each other but work together as investigators, must solve several baffling... more>> cases that put the readers on edge along with them. There they were, in a hut, surrounded by desperate killers waiting to pounce on them as they slept the night. It's heart pounding, scary, teeth-rattling, Ding Mo's distinctive style and MO.

Yet in the end, very human as the story of the brilliant yet f*cked up serial killer who loves the MC better than he loves the world and mayhem, hides in an obscure village completely defeated, thinking of the girl lost to him forever.

The title refers not only to amnesia but the passage of time when everybody grows old, when time eventually erases the memories of the bitter and unpalatable past, when even a heinous crime is forgotten and consigned to history... where will he be then in the girl's memory, when she marries her true love, shares with him a future, when she bears his kids and life flows and ebbs with time...

The manipulation of memory is the key to this novel's brilliance. Everybody wants to be remembered, be it bitter or sweet. Remembrance means shared feelings, shared events, shared conversations, shared intimacies and a past.

But his memory will be lost to her as she regains her true self and moves on with life with the man who loves her by her side. Even if he's not a serial killer, even if he did not manipulate her into being her best friend, he still lost because it was not real... all of it.

One of the saddest love stories I've ever read. The ending made me cry. He was a serial killer but in the end, all he can think of was her and how she was lost to him forever and how his life is dimmed without her by his side.

A freaking masterpiece. <<less

Compared to When a Snail Loves, I feel this book is more well written though I don’t know which one came out first.
The female lead isn’t too all-knowing and is actually rather vain. I never had a problem with a girl knowing she’s pretty and being vain about it. It’s hard to pinpoint what’s good about it but it’s definitely worth the read.

One of my favorite passage of the book is:

In the blurriness, he remembers that day in Jiangcheng suddenly.

On that night, in the room covered in darkness. He... more>> was smoking behind the screen feeling annoyed. He thought to himself that he must have searched for her for 1892 days, yet why hadn’t he found her? Why hadn’t she appeared?

And then she appeared in front of him like that. In her clean police uniform and refreshing face. She looked like another person, yet she felt familiar at the same time.

And then he realized that it was the face of the only person he ever loved. <<less

Translation: 5/5, Story 5/5

I'm a major fan of author Ding Mo! To say that I highly anticipate this story is an understatement. I've been waiting for years for this story to be completely translated before I start reading, but I couldn't help myself! ? I'm beyond thankful to the dedicated translator Lil Bliss for keeping up with this project since 2015!!! You're a blessing! ???

Now I'm reading slowly to pace myself and just enjoy the ride!

Ding Mo loves her crime c*m romance plots! (Check out her other works pls!!!).... more>> But it isn't merely the whirlwind mysteries, conspiracies and exciting romance that makes her works so well liked. It's her ability to capture the delicate tendencies of human nature and touch the heart of her readers. Her writing speaks of empathy and love in the most realistic and basic sense.

I will probably rewrite this review once this series is completely translated. But I think I already like this story more than WASL.

There's a 36 ep drama loosely adapted to this story and I don't recommend watching it. Pardon this rant but having watched 3 eps, I just can't continue. It's so bad and wrong... The actors casted are not suited for their roles. Like wtf is up with Dr Xu's curtain hairstyle. Why is Jin Xi running about solving crimes in high heels??? Not to mention the exaggerated acting. Han Chen lacked the imposing and somber aura...

The drama pales in comparison and there are so many ridiculous changes that the story became convulated. The MCs' original charm and appeal are lost. : (So sad, as I enjoyed WASL and WHCCYE drama adaptions. <<less

An amazing read. I am really a fan of Dang Mo's work! Memory Lost is a good balance between the crime and romance storyline with a touch of comedy. It entices the audience to enter their world and hold your breath as they chase after the criminals. Though I was able to tell early on who was S, it still was an exciting feeling as I read along to see if my suspicion is correct. The plotline was well developed and the characters pull you in. It is not a... more>> mystery novel that one can play along looking for clues but the deductions were good though at times obvious.

I do have an issue with how the "attractiveness" or physical appearance of the characters is always emphasis to describe the emotions. It feels overused and really not a good way of describing an emotional response. It distracted me a lot while reading. But it's a minor inconvenience.

Overall, a good read that I obsessed over finishing over the course of the week. <<less

One of my fav novel ever!!!!!!.

I have always been a huge Ding Mo fan.I love her every single work.

Memory Lost -will make you sit on the edge of your seat in anticipation. I really love Su Mian& Han Chen. They are my 2nd best couple. 1st one is Bo Jinyan & Jian Yao (from Love Me If You Dare by the same author)

I have loved every single chapter.I was so hooked up by this novel that when it's over I was on the verge of tears.I didn't want it... more>> to end.

Then I found out that there is a prequel of Memory Lost. It's the story of how our leads met before their memory is lost.

I personally like this novel a lot. However, the FL really frustrates me in the first few chapters.

One thing I extremely love about this novel is the development. The story slowly develops and each and every turn is filled with content, which I find one of the more realistic ones.

This is another masterpiece from Ding Mo

There are so many layers to this novel, there is the top layer of two police officers meeting and working together on a task force

Below this layer is a group of serial killers who are targeting the task force

... more>> Below this is the ML has amnesia and his trying to find the truth about his past

And at the heart are Fated Lovers

Not all the villains are evil, they have reasons for their villainy and some of them are tragic characters

Not all the heroic characters are good. This dichotomy keeps the tension high in the novel

I highly recommend this novel <<less

I greatly enjoy reading Memory Lost. I have read it twice and plan to reread it again in the near future.

I love reading how Han Chen and Jin Xi reconnected their feelings just from their daily interactions with each other and finally discovered that they once belonged to each other.
I truly enjoy how Han Chen & Jin Xi's love & affection toward each other gets stronger throughout the novel. 💖💖 They're really a loving and caring couple.

The Bonus Point for me in reading this Thriller Romance Novel is that... more>> 'S' also lost his memory just like Han Chen & Jin Xi did. From the beginning, I had a feeling that S was somehow connected with the 7 Member Organization but never expected that S too lost his memory at the same time Han Chen & Jin Xi did 5 years prior. I really enjoyed being surprised by the creative author, Ding Mo, when I read that fact.

Of all Ding Mo's Thriller Romance Novels, I enjoy reading Memory Lost the most, though I still enjoy reading When A Snail Loves (Ji Bai & Xu Xu) and Love Me If You Dare (Bo Ji Yan & Jian Yao). <<less

This would've gotten a 5, if not because of some loose ends (Warning, spoilers ahead)

    1. The leads were questioning as to how the FL became a
      Spoiler

      undercover cop

      [collapse]
since she was only 18-19, didn't have any experience in the field and had not even graduated yet. We never get any kind of clues regarding this.
    2. Spoiler

Why Xun Nan Bai didn't kill FL even though he was so close to breaking her neck. I first though that maybe he was respecting S's wish, but it was clear at the end that he despised S's way. So it just doesn't add up imo.

      [collapse]
    3. BIG SPOILER DON'T OPEN IF YOU STILL WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING BY YOURSELF
      Spoiler

S went into the poisonous room in an effort to save the FL, losing his memories in the process. It is said that he disbanded the group before the incident. It is said that he "arranged" for the FL's switched identities, etc. Then how did everything go according to his plan when he's not even in the situation to monitor it. Members who were still loyal to him arrange for it? Or did he arrange it so perfectly before everything happened? Then how did he end up working beside the FL eventually? Unless I got all this wrong, this is all is just too questionable.

      [collapse]
I personally think we should get closure regarding those since they're implied in the story.

Secondly, I'm actually not fond of the perfectly handsome and cold man who also exudes Alpha vibe who'll turn into a complete wolf once he smells s*x. It's modern times, I'm not even sure if there is any realistic couple who do s*x as often as this novel... nevermind. Some people enjoy it I guess, so its just the matter of taste.

Putting those aside, the cases are beautifully written. The criminals have characters. The side characters are interesting and their interactions are fun.

Overall, I still prefer this to Ding Mo's other works.

This is my favorite novel so far from Ding Mo's work. It successfully got me hooked since the first chapter. I couldn't predict the outcome and I always couldn't wait to read the next chapter to know who's the culprit and their methods.

There are nothing new from the leads character. It's like other Ding Mo's novel where FL is beautiful, cheerful, and easygoing (Xu Xu from "When a Snail Loves" is the exception) and ML is extremely handsome, cold, aloof, and indifferent.

The story really blows my mind. I don't expect... more>> that:

Spoiler

FL is already being targeted by S since she was a child and all the crime he's done are only to lure her to be by his side. So creepy.

[collapse]

The love story between FL and ML is sweet and also heartbreaking at the same time.

Spoiler

Both lost their memories because of poisonous gas. After they regain their consciousness, ML barely remembers that he has a fiancee but he can't remember who is she and how is she like. On the other hand, FL doesn't remember him at all and she's given a new identity by S without knowing that in her previous place she's labeled as a traitor because someone impersonated her to commit a crime.

They separate for 5 years. In all those years, ML always travels all over the country to find FL without knowing who to find. Until he accidentally meets her again in FL's current place.

[collapse]

I hate and pity S, T, and A at the same time (as for other criminals, I think they are purely psychopath). T could be a successful athlete if only his father didn't overtake by greed. A could be a cheerful and bright youth if only he was raised by a loving family. And S, I feel complicated about him. I know he loves FL so much but it doesn't erase his crime. He could be something else but he chooses to follow his father's path. But still his ending successfully make me pity him more.

Oh yes, don't forget to read the prequel because it will fill up all the missing details and plot holes in this story. <<less

Thank you so much for the translation, and the author did an amazing job too.

Spoiler

I honestly love this novel, the ML and FL are clearly destined to be together, as there’s quite a bit of foreshadowing at the beginning before it’s revealed. I really love the other members of the Black Shield Team, they’re all so funny and so lovable too. At the beginning I felt really bad for Xu Si Bai, as he’s loved Jin Xi for years, and then at the end it’s revealed that he’s actually the main villain. I kind of suspected that he was a psychopath, or something was wrong with him right before it was revealed, because of his obsession with Jin Xi, but what happened to him pretty much broke my heart.
I was so happy when ML and FL were reunited, like I cried of happiness. Finally ML found his beloved fiancée from his memories, LIKE HE SUFFERED THROUGH YEARS OF LOOKING FOR HER AND THAT ALSO BROKE MY HEART. The mysterious past of both the FL and ML was written really well, how it’s all revealed at the end, and how pretty much all of them have something to do with each other in the past.

Again, thank you so much for this translation, it was such an enjoyable read!

Damn good.

It has it´s ups, it´s downs, lot´s of detective work (super interesting and detailed by the way) and great romance that absolutely twists, plays, breaks and puts back together your heart leaving a weirdly bittersweet feeling in it.

The main characters are lovable and charming (even that damn villain, because god how much I am crying for him TT_TT), while de secondary do their job pretty well (I got disguted and attached accordingly).

Of course it is kinda dark (since it´s about mu*derers, crime and lots of drama) but it has... more>> it´s bright, fun and comedic moments.

So yeah, maybe the ending isn´t that satisfactory to all parties (super breaking my heart there author) and doesn´t feel like an end per se but I DO recommend it.

Thanks author (though I kinda hate you for what you did to S) <<less

Readers need to persevere reading the author's reminder of ML's beauty every couple of paragraphs. Yeah, this is one of that kind of novel. We get it, he's perfect and his physical violence is "alpha". I'm dropping this. It's too much for me but it's a decent read.

Translator and the team did a very good job translating this. I recommend reading this if you have nothing to read and don't mind the reminders and ML's questionable actions.
