After being tortured to death by Kan Wenxiao, Jian Xiuyun realizes that he has been living in a novel called 《The Supreme Path of Immortality》.

In this book, his most hated disciple, Kan Wenxiao, is the male protagonist. He is the cannon fodder villain who scolds and beats up the male protagonist. Making things difficult for him and ending up miserably.

After being reborn and recalling the ending of his previous life. Jian Xiuyun decided to make a fresh start, he planned to resist the disgust in his heart and he will treat Kan Wenxiao like his own son.

As soon as he opened his eyes, he found that Kan Wenxiao was tied to the furnace cauldron by him, and he was holding a dagger in his hand.

Facing such a scene, Jian Xiuyun calmly cut the rope on Kan Wenxiao’s body with the dagger, then stretched out his hand at him and said, “Be good, come here, Shizun will hug you.”

Kan Wenxiao had always known that Jian Xiuyun didn’t like him because he had an ugly face.

Although later he didn’t know why Jian Xiuyun suddenly changed his attitude, he could still feel his pretense and reluctance.

Kan Wenxiao felt that there was an unspeakable anger burning in his heart, but there was something else under this anger.

He didn’t know what it was until he held Jian Xiuyun in his arms and sprayed uncontrolled words in his master’s ears.

“Shizun, can I exchange my sincerity for your sincerity?”

1. Gong’s face was burned by fire. He’s disfigured in the early chapters and will recover later.

2. Shou is a beauty-addict. He disliked Gong at first because of his disfigurement.

This novel starts out seeming like a typical trope where the MC learns he is a villain in a novel and has to change the plot to save his life. However, unlike other novels of this type, MC starts out as an amoral completely selfish a**hole, who pretty much deserved what happened to him in his previous life. It was so different I found it very interesting and refreshing. However, as the plot progresses, you learn it's much more complicated, and of course, MC learns his heart isn't as cold... more>> and dead as he thinks, otherwise it can't be a romance.

The other thing I found very interesting is
Spoiler

the MC isn't the driver behind the ML blackening. There is actually a wider plot going on that the MC didn't know about, and he is a side character to this bigger story.

[collapse]
There's a lot of things the MC didn't know about in his past life, and the reveals become heart wrenching. There's a lot of heartbreak in fact, but it is a HE!

I normally don't like yanderes, and the ML does become yandere for a while, but I would say it's mild yandere, so I tolerated it. And
Spoiler

the reveal about the ML's thinking was completely heartbreaking.

[collapse]

My main criticism is the reveal about the MC's backstory was too fast, and too close to the end. Also
Spoiler

it's extremely debatable if the ML deserved such a happy ending, given how awful the things he did were. But the ML and MC's relationship was so cute, and their adopted daughters were so cute, I can't help but love it.

This web novel left me speechless to whether I enjoyed reading or I lost few brain cells. I enjoyed reading the first few chapters, it was cliché like I was reading SVSSS, but instead of shen yuan transmigrating it was just a rebirth of the villain.

The MC outright ab*sed, neglected, played favoritism, let him get bullied and enjoyed watching ML suffer. All because ML was “ugly” and it was literally just ML with disfigured half part of the face. MC goes on to talk mad crap about how ugly ML... more>> is with his monologue lol. I felt like MC only likes MLs face, which recovered later after the separation arc time skip.

I still don’t understand why the cultivation world cared so much about ML being ugly and downright humiliated him. Oh yes, MC pretended to care about him and then proceeded to be a**hole. He cared more about the ML ruining his image by having his ugly face be revealed and now his name is thrown with dirt of having an “ugly disciple.”

somehow this book got me feeling pity for the “main villain” Lin liaoting, who bullied ML. Even had me randomly thinking those two would had been much better pair if Lin liaoting was reborn like the MC.

Spoiler

he bullied him because his shizun (MC) would always talk mad crap about ML being ugly and due to that he started to bully the ML. The MC didn’t do sh*t about it and let ML get bullied. ML was bullied for a lot of sh*t and almost even died at the process MC would know these even knows about ML almost dying due to it. On the current life hes a jealous little boy since his shizun seems to be paying attention to the guy who he hated a lot and even took him to the competition that MC never took ML to. He crashes it and cuts MLs mask through his power and MLs face is revealed to the public

[collapse]

It truly felt like the story could have been ML x the villain

Spoiler

separation arc starts ML comes back and the little villain feels sorry and seems to have some conscience of wanting to apologize but does not get a chance whatsoever. ML ignores him, gives him cold shoulders, says goodnight to MC and the girl (later adopted daughter), but not to the little villain. Brings 3 mask of foxs but not to him. While he sees ML, MC, and the girl his monologue hits with being left out since he can’t fit in with his deer mask and completely ignored.

[collapse]

oh man, did that dude have it hard just like MC of his previous life punishments.

Spoiler

dude had to find out that his whole family were killed. He went through all the corpses to find his family, he was bloodied mess trying to find his families bodies.

ML imprisoned him and did not care two crap about him other than abusing him. He left him alive because “shizun wants you to live.”

Gets thrown in a cage that’s with a wolf in front of everyone and even his shizun, who is powerless held by ML. His neck gets bitten by the wolf.

Tries to stab and does stab ML, but oh magical things happen and his shizun and ML reconcile and gets together

[collapse]

Well, good thing was when he said that he no longer wants or thinks jian xiuyun as his shizun. I mean, damn.

Perhaps, I really wanted ML and Lin Liaoting to be a pair due to me reading “A Hundred Ways To Kill A Heartthrob” this book really pitifully made me like Lin Liaoting. <<less

God that one review about wanting ML to end up with a villain is so damn weird. Girl, that’s not an option. You gave a one star, maybe focus on criticising the story instead of making a fanfic.

Edit: It's not showing up for me, but I gave this 2 stars. It drew me in, but I can't recommend it.

----

For how dramatic and tragic this story is, the ending is entirely unjustified and disappointing.

Spoiler

The MC and ML just yeet themselves into a happy ending that has nothing to do with the actual novel, while the only character with a real development arc is left to carry the undeserved consequences alone.

[collapse]

This novel needed at least 50 more chapters and another rebirth if it wanted to reach a decent end.

I compulsively read it so I won't leave a low star rating but I honestly feel a bit empty.

This is more of a tragedy than a romance in my opinion. If you wanted cute (generally my preference) please be aware that there are a lot of knives here and tread carefully.

Some vague spoilers below, particularly plot points I don't like as a warning.

Spoiler

It is HE but the kind where I kind of wish it wasn't. I don't think the wrongs of the ML deserve forgiveness and acceptance from the MC.

Living happily ever after feels so disconnected from the manic and cruel revenge of the past and present lives.

This is a hurt and comfort story but the hurt is too much and the comfort is both inadequate and undeserved.

It also featured a plot I personally hate where the ML slept with a bunch of women to try get over the MC. So if you hate that too, be aware of it. It is really gross to me.

[collapse]

So go ahead and read it forewarned.

I couldn't put it down and read it to the end in one sitting so if the themes I mentioned don't put you off I would give it a go. <<less

tldr; this read like a incomplete fanfiction which is okay by itself but not as a novel

Echoing other reviews, I feel like I was reading a fanfiction of SVSSS where shen jiu gets reincarnated with a dash of Erha. It has the (1) shizun treats disciple badly because shizun hates that the disciple was like himself (pitiful) concept, (2) the annual Immortals' conference where things go horribly awry concept, (3) the sect leader (zhangmen) 's secret hidden love for said shizun, (4) death of the zhangmen at... more>> the hands of the demonic disciple after shizun gets imprisoned and tortured, (5) disciple's excellent cooking... and (6) later we even find that shizun had a terrible past where he was objectified and almost sexually assaulted, just like the glimpses of shen jiu's past we see. Shizun gets reincarnated and understands how his actions towards his disciple lead to his death, so resolves to treat his disciple better which leads to the ML and MC's relationship developing uniquely.

I could still respect the grind, so those points weren't exactly negatives. In addition, I liked that the MC (shizun) didn't immediately feel sympathy for the ML + expressly stated that MC really was just treating the ML better for his own survival.

However, the ending was terribly disappointing, because despite the literal blood debts between the ML and MC, the MC decided to stay with ML in the end. Plot devices like the ML's slaughter of a whole clan,
Spoiler

said clan being the FAMILY of MC's other disciple, the ML indulging in countless women only to "come" to the understanding that shizun is the only one for him, and the dissatisfaction of those under ML's command

[collapse]
didn't seem like they were properly addressed at the end by the author.

Maybe the author meant for this book to be a tragedy, because that is what this is. The only character with any real development is left

to carry his hate and grief alone

First of all, Thank You Chrysanthemum Garden for translating this novel. I mostly when to their site as they have great translation.

Back to review, honestly, I thought this gonna be another like SVSSS type of novel boy I was wrong. The first half is good. I like how Shizun is consistent with how he is in description, hating ugly stuffs and enduring ML's existence.

But, the second half to ending just make me feel like "what the h3ll is happening here?"

Spoiler

especially when ML began to find replacement for MC, like nah, this ain't my type of man, cause he f*cking kiss that replacement, I was like, nah no redemption for this kind of people

[collapse]

The ending seems rushed and I feel like I don't get any closure on the MC's shixiong and his other disciple.

Anyways, thank you for reading my review. Happy readingggg <<less

sort of mades it a bit more forgiveable? Sort of.

i guess what made this plummet for me was that the falling action on the MC's side felt nonexistent, since those faint glimmers of hearts skipping a beat felt rushed? Superficial? More than anything. It doesn't help that none of the characters endeared themselves to me, so I couldn't enjoy it and go through the entire thing with my usual threshold for BS/plot holes or high suspension of disbelief. All in all, everything was pretty dissatisfying, and it's not just my cup of Acquired Taste™, even though I sup on the usual shizunf*ckery like a man starved. <<less

The author is really good at writing well developed and realistic characters, and the MC's character development happened at a realistic pace, until the last arc. The last few arcs took a really dark turn and felt very rushed in my opinion, honestly ruined the book for me.

Basically don't read if you don't like morally grey characters, and by grey I mean really really really dark grey. There's no r*pe like in a lot of BLs and the ML generally treats MC very well but the ML's treatment of certain... more>> characters in the novel is really despicable to me. Also the way MC developed/realized he had feelings for ML felt really rushed and a bit out of the blue in my opinion. It was generally a good read but I didn't like the ending. It was a happy ending for the MC and ML but not my fav character.

Major Spoilers:

Spoiler

In the later part of the novel a disciple of the MC's, Lin Liaoting, his entire family is killed, and he had a big family like hundreds of people. Then later we find out that the ML was the one who killed his entire family. ML's justifications for this was that Liaoting bullied him really horribly when he was child (left him for dead kind of bullying) and Liaoting's family was part of the group that mu*dered ML's entire family when he was a child. But honestly didn't make ML's actions feel any better to me because the author describes how devastated Liaoting was after his entire family was killed. To make matters worse the author writes an extra where Liaoting has a dream where he's back in the past and he meets ML and promises not to bully him and his family is alive and happy but then he wakes up and realizes its just a dream. Bro you don't understand how heart broken this made me. Even before his family died he regretted what he did to ML and I don't care what anyone else says in my heart he deserves a happy ending and a second chance 😭

It was a decent read. The ending did lowkey feel like the author gave up on the story though. Honestly, let's be real, the ML and MC personalities do not blend well. It will take more than 60 chapters to fix these two. I truly feel that the author gave up because of the complexity that comes with the clashing traits each character has and needed to work out. There was a lot of time skipping towards the end so it did feel a little rushed. It was still a... more>> good read, though. <<less

I'm going to be honest with you, this novel read like a fanfic that combined the plot of both SVSSS and 2Ha. Literally the first half of the novel was SVSSS and the last half was a rip off of Erha.

I can't even begin to list all the ways they were similar, it's just like a copy paste of the plots of both novels.

Also while this may seem like a happy ending, it doesn't make any sense for it to be a happy ending.... It literally felt like the author... more>> got bored of the plot and then wanted to wrap it up in one chapter. For as much angst there was I don't think the ending (literally the last 2 or 3 chapters) was enough to justify all the wrongs done.

Spoiler

Lin Liaoting pretty much didn't deserve anything that happened to him. It felt like the author specifically chose him to pick on and was like "You don't get to be happy, ever!". He was pretty much a cross between 2ha's Xue Meng and SVSSS's Ming Fan.

[collapse]

However, I literally couldn't put it down and read the whole thing in one day lol so I will rate it 4 stars. Good translation and obviously I liked both SVSSS and 2Ha so I didn't mind those plots. Only thing I didn't like was the hastily wrapped up ending and the lack of originality so I'm deducting one star.

Worth checking out :) <<less

Read this if:

  • You like SSVSS fanfiction on Wattpad
  • Are fine with interesting ideas that go nowhere
  • Are in it for the melodrama, no matter how blatantly s*upid it is.
S0 REAL Review:

Story starts out super interesting. Evil shizun (MC) reborn at the worst time of the Protag's (ML) life. What makes it unique is because the guy is such an as*hole about everything that he really can't get over it. I mean, it's only reasonable that after being tortured for months with the guy, you'd have problems being nice to him immediately upon... more>> seeing him (no matter how justified that previous torture was). You also begin to see the MC slowly begin to change his thinking. He starts to accept how his actions have caused harm not only to the ML, but his other students as well. He starts to show actual caring and then that arc is done.

The second arc is where everything is falls apart. Time jump and nothing has changed. Everyone stopped at the last arc and for some reason their is this overly dramatic side story that you're supposed to care about even though is involves a spoiled prince (seriously, if DC kept his 'brother' out of his room, both times, none of this would have happpened). You keep getting shown interesting things only for it to go nowhere later. I mean the story introduces a better love interest for the ML since we know that MC is a raving, jackwaffle. <<less

Great story, I love how the MC is kinda morally grey and isn't like the cliche righteous kinda guy that has a kind of goofy personality? It was good, tho the ending felt rushed because of how abrupt it was.

I mean I liked it but the Ml's action was NOT justified, and that rubs me the wrong way. In the end, MC is not given a great reason for continuing to be with ml, but whatever. Still I did enjoy the overall first half of the novel. Later they kinda, not really rush it but pushed a lot of wtf events when it was too near the end.

Good read overall, just not very fulfilling endings in understanding the character.

Wow thank you. The story really a good read. There’s a lot of comparisons but I think it’s can stand on its own, even with a few cliche and similar plots. And because the chapter is so short, it’s already quite jam pack with all the necessary details and wrap ups, albeit its kinda simple, the plot from the beginning and till the end and some sweet extras, the flow it’s alright. A few comments said the MC background story just too perfunctory, but I see nothing wrong, as not... more>> all ‘villains’ have to be “made” from major aghast, tragedies and betrayals.

So it’s not a bad read. I quite enjoyed it. Thank you. <<less

It was good, it was so good. Until it wasn't. I loved this novel and the characters but the ending was literally what the heck happened. Like, what happened??? It was sudden and it was not fulfilling. It felt rushed and some things weren't tied closed. It was sorely disappointing and that ending literally knocked off 2 stars for me. I would recommend it (ish) but it isn't like a must read novel.

This was kind of a roller coaster. The beginning was strong, and the end was strong, but the middle was not. Side stories and side cp made me tear up, and I am not someone who cries easily. This author clearly has a strength for shorter stories and for strong emotional feelings and angst. The overall impression left after completing this novel is a satisfaction through acceptance and exhaustion.

I found that although overall it was not a cohesive read, there were many strong points. I hoped that MC would be... more>> crematorium wife chasing by the end, instead it was ML, but both of them realized that indulging in spite didn't satisfy them and instead they only became exhausted and guilty. Both suffering was the right decision, I think. Definitely know what stories I want to suggest for further reading, Reborn Lian Yanting and Buddha-like Rebirth.

I felt a lot of sympathy for side characters that didn't finish getting developed, but trying to cram more story in when the writer said all they wanted to and parts already dragged and muddled would not have helped.

The emotions of every character who experienced trauma were very well expressed and strong. That's something that I consider a great narrative selling point. I also like that the protags had to clear the air and find peace, rather than an epic love story. <<less

At first I thought what a nice story, but then it started to get very annoying as it contained sadism. It was a very damaging read, I got goosebumps when I read about the woman with the mole in her eye

I can't stand the last 10 episodes, especially the 5 episodes where he slept with other people.

Anyway, even though it was hard, I finished it and it's on my list of things I won't read again. I'll go read a novel from my favorites list and try to forget about... more>> it. <<less

Honestly it feels rushed and the characters (side) fleshed out enough to make you care, with the ancient stone city and Yu Xinian side stories it falls flat. His backstory explains how he grew up in an abusive household and was sold off to wealthy nobles as decoration, and was lead on by his ‘owner’ in the false hope that they’ll be married to them be betrayed and thrown off a cliff. He was then picked up by his Shizun and told that he’d have everything but he wasn’t chosen to be the head, therefore he’s made to believe that he can’t trust the hearts of people so he’ll just see what’s true on the outside. It’s not justified but you can definitely see where he comes from.
