Upon completing a year-long training program with a special operations team at the Ministry of Public Security, Ming Shu returns to Dongye City to discover that he has a new boss.

Many people said to him, “Ming-ge, the new boss is such an enigma. Don’t let him harass you.”

To which Ming Shu replied, “…that guy has been harassing me for years. You guys just don’t know it.”

Ever since Ming Shu returned to the bustling metropolis of Dongye City, strange mu*ders have been cropping up one after another. An unemployed man suddenly goes berserk in a cafe. A mysterious incident occurs at a long-abandoned playground in the middle of the night. Underneath the body of a man who met a tragic end, a second corpse is discovered to be buried.

Captain of the Serious Crimes Division, Ming Shu, and Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Xiao Yu’an, join forces to investigate and solve all these bizarre cases and more.

Loved that MC ain't weak. He is so adorable when in private with ML. Healthy relationship. But majority it's about crime with little sugar mix in. Can't wait for new chapter. It's recommended to read Mint-Stained Shirt (prequel) first to have deeper understanding about their relationship 🤩🤩🤩🤩🥰🥰😘💖

Why this novel still don't have any review? It's seriously so good in many aspects. Both the writing style & plot have a 'professional' feel to it, if u get what I mean. ^^ Relationship is simple yet sweet, description of human nature is excellent, cases are all written in a non pretentious & interesting style. A+ to both the original writer & the translator. \\^^//

I'm not going to rate this because after reading a majority of this novel, I realized this was clearly not for me nor was it written for someone like me; let me explain.

i enjoy mystery novels. I enjoy novels that take you on a problem solving journey to figure out the who dunnit of it all. This novel, was not exactly that. Or at the very least, it was, but maximized.

usually, when I read these mystery or crime novels, I like them to have maybe one or two surface level... more>> problems that need to be solved with an overall mystery that ties everything together. That's what I was hoping for when I read this.

i knew it wouldn't be heavy on the bl, but by the 100th chapter that was the only thing keeping me going. But by 152 I couldn't continue and ended up skipping to 178 hoping to just get it over with, but ultimately I just gave up.

it's not because this novel is uninteresting, because in fact I thoroughly enjoyed the first couple of crime scenes. It was an interesting insight, however, it just became overwhelming.

there was 1 too many arcs where the logic seemed to be becoming more and more hazy (in my opinion) in the beginning the ML made sure to correct the MC about jumping to conclusions, but it seemed by the 3rd or 4th maybe crime he was skipping to them.

in reality, just because the criminal took a part of the body with him, does not automatically equate to cannibalism, and that whole thing bothered me in a sense only because it felt like they were just seeing into the future of it.

they could have easily assumed the criminal to be one that crossdresses as they already narrowed down them being a man and them seeking out beauty. To me it would have made more sense to assume they killed solely based off of jealousy for an aspect he didn't have but to jump straight to cannibalism was crazy.

anyway, there was another area where they jumped to conclusions but I'm not going to talk about that. Ultimately, I grew overwhelmed of the whole thing and found myself wanting to do any and everything but reading.

i watched a whole 24 episode anime in one day and another 13 and 16 in the falling two days just so I could put off reading because my brain couldn't handle the slowness of it all. I wish there was more relationship in it because at the end of the day they had down time and in real life even cops have time to spend with their family but it felt like we only got one or two rushed over scenes of softness that could amount to MAYBE one chapter while the rest was just mind boggling slow paced detective word. It was fun at first but it's not for me.

the translator deserves so much praise for doing this tho because I can't imagine how hard it probably was <<less

... more>> This novel is gold. As I stumbled through the novel, I read the reviews and went through its prequel Mint-stained shirt first. (It was so heart-warming, recommended reading it as well). Coming to this novel, I should stress, the novel is written as well as translated so well.

The cases are written adequately, the mysteries, the thought processes, everything was so intriguing, that I've been wondering what would happen next which I generally don't. You wouldn't regret reading this novel. I came for romance, the crime suspense had me waiting every week for the updates.

The relationship between Ming Shu and Xiao Yu'an, is so healthy which will make you swoon, especially if you've read the mint-stained shirt.

All in all, READ IT!!!

I've specifically created an account to leave a review behind because honestly there are very few of them here than it should be.

Edit: Now completed and it's one of the stories I keep coming back to. Reallllly Gooooood! <<less

This novel deserves so much more love!!! Thank you to those translating it :)

This is a lovely little crime novel. I’m not great at writing reviews so I’ll just get to it: funny side characters, fascinating and emotional crime cases, the main couple is so f*cking CUTE together (and it’s a very healthy relationship, which is sadly so rare sometimes in this genre) and very well written and translated.

HOWEVER, this is a sequel. In “Madness of the Heart” the main couple is already together from the start. Theyre still... more>> f*cking adorable though, even if you haven't read the buildup of their relationship. But if you want to, there is a VERY GOOD prequel about their childhood together (I highly recommend it). <<less

This is mostly me ranting on the massive confusion of differences between novel and manhua. I like both but immersions are really getting broken due to how different both are when reading through.

The novel and manhua differs a bit due to the manhua team wanting more interactions between the MC and ml. Sort of break immersions though due to having to juggle between two different scenarios where novel would only have MC while the manhua would have MC and ML tag teaming at the current case.


Like we miss an affair plot scenario, I would have loved to see that instead of MC and ML going out shopping and by some weird fate stumble upon a crime scene. Like why are they visiting an abandoned area during shopping time? I feel like the manhua wants romance as main plot instead of crime solving which the novel has.

I am confused. Teen ML did not get kidnapped? I feel like novel and manhua is slowly slowly splitting from no return. I don't know whether to like the manhua version or not due to it being vastly different in past story for ml. I know there are original ideas for manhua but background info should still be kept similar. From what I see, in the manhua MC does not know what is going on in ML life even having to ask what happened while novel MC knows and clearly stated that he didn't get to meet up due to ML having missions at other locations.

From what I see here manhua version is like a complete rewrite for their romance with added drama so far compared to the novel version at this point of translated chapters I've seen.

I wonder how this does not have better rating! I made my account just to write this review!

This is such a well written novel, especially if you enjoy suspense-thrillers. Everything is well connected, the deductions made are never far-fetched, and it has just the right amount of mind-boggling twisters to keep you guessing but not confused. I have to admit that I'm guilty of binge-reading this novel it's that good!

The MC is strong-willed and intelligent, and at no point in the novel did I feel that he was inferior... more>> to the ML. I like the fact that both seem to be on equal footing, both in terms of strength and the intensity of feelings they have for each other (though it does not appear too much in this novel but given the mystery/suspense focus, that's understandable. Please give mint-stained shirt a read for an insight into their relationship). Every case, every lead, every turning point... it's threaded together so perfectly that the end of a case will give you the satisfaction akin to that from completing a jigsaw puzzle.

This novel really made me a fan of suspense-thrillers. It is so well-written that there were many points where I felt like crying reading the victim's background

This novel really deserves more reviews! The MC is a captain of the serious crimes division (basically they solve complex/serious homicide cases) and the story is a collection of different mysteries he and his team investigate. The cases are very interesting! I really enjoy following along as the team uncovers the truth. All the characters are well developed. Over the course of the novel, you get to know each of the members on the MC’s team. Also the people involved in the cases (e.g. Suspects, witnesses, etc) are developed well... more>> too. The author was thorough in fleshing out the backstories and events that led to the crimes.

The ML is the new director at the MC’s office and helps the MC’s team with their investigations. I love the ML, he is such a sweetheart. The relationship between the MC and ML is established before the start of this novel, but they keep their relationship on the down low at work. It’s pretty funny when the other team members start to notice their relationship.

This story is definitely more of a crime novel than a romance. The moments between the MC and ML are really sweet, but not the focus of the story. I strongly recommend reading the prequel (Mint Stained Shirt) that covers their past/growing up together. The prequel is very romantic and poignant. Keep in mind though that the prequel was written AFTER this novel, and so there are a few things that got changed in the prequel (i.e. Exactly when they got together). I read the prequel first and so was a little thrown off when I got to the flashback/reminiscing the past parts that were a little different from what happened in the prequel. But those things are minor and easily overlooked.

TLDR, I recommend reading this novel if you like crime/mystery solving novels with a sweet couple’s dogfood moments scattered throughout. Also I recommend reading the prequel! It gives you a deep understanding of the MC and ML, and how they grew into who they are as the adults in this novel. <<less

I love everything about this. Please give it a read. Other reviews are more comprehensive but just wanna say it's really good, the cases are with twists and turns. Wish we see more romance but that's normal for a mystery book. Love the characters and how they deduce.

The avenger arc with Bai Ying touched my soul. I felt really compelled to remember Bai Ying who remained kind and generous even at the hands of multiple injustices and cruelty. His character felt so real to me I am bound to honour him some way or some how. I feel pain for Chu Xin and Luo Yi as well.

Mmm.. Where to start..

Highly recommend!

One of the very best novels I've got to read. Story is really really well written. It felt so real while reading this. I enjoyed each and every chapter. (Also the dog food thrown right on the face😂). The cases that will be solved are full of twists and turns. Side characters, side couples.. Each and every one play very important role. I saw someone mentioned this thing at a review. Read 'Mint stained shirt' first (to eat lot of dog food and to learn about... more>> the main couple's past.. Childhood) Then come here. I also read few chapters and saw that review and went back. After I came back to this book. The main couple will remain as one of my favourite. Their strong bond till chlidhood to now, undying love and how much they value each other, the respect they have towards each other.. I really love them. Also members of serious crime investigation team. How much they care for each other, value each other, the brotherhood.. I'm going to miss them so much.

Auther of this is one of amazing writters I came across. Thank you for writting this..
