I just came back to reread this wonderful novel for the nth time and was shocked to see so many negative comments under it! This is honestly one of the best novels I've found on novelupdates and I want to address some of the issues people had with it.

  1. This novel rides a line between having "too much" and "too little' plot I personally love the balance between the mysterious unfolding developments, fluff, and smut. The problem comes with what you are looking for in a novel. If you are looking for an intense plot driven novel with nonstop action, a total smut show with no plot other than that, or a slice of life novel with little development, then this might not be for you. However, it has elements of all three of these in good proportion.
  2. The ML. He's a tough nut to crack. I do understand why people don't like him (at least at the beginning). There are people who judge him entirely based on purely modern or historical standards and I don't think either of these approaches are correct. He is a character written in a historical-ish context by a modern person. Not all of his behaviors are decent by our standards, however they fit within the world the author has created. While I feel some things that should not be normalized in fiction, compared to so many things this is suuuuuuper tame.
    Spoiler

    The first xxx time the wedding night there was sketchy consent but the wedding night is not exactly optional so it needed to be done. And later the MC stands up for herself and tells him where he can shove his lack of consideration. Later s*x is both consensual and enthusiastic once the doctor gave him a few tight slaps (Anna is one of the female power characters you can really get behind in the novel)

    [collapse]
  3. The weakness of the MC. *sigh* I am a person that absolutely hates the typical ditzy MC that can't even wipe their own a** without Prince Charming to hand them tp. Lucia gets a bad wrap being tossed in with those types. Personally I blame the comic version for making her look so frail. She is clearly described in the novel as having a sturdy frame. Yes, she is not a modern feminist woman that is confident and stalwart. But she IS someone who has had to be self reliant. I'm just gonna put this in a spoiler because in case I haven't convinced you of why it's ok for her to not to be the most brave person ever (she can be pretty bada*s tho).
    Spoiler

    she grew up as a commoner, lost her mom, was neglected to extremes, faced physical, verbal, emotional, and s*xual abuse, and experienced heartbreak, betrayal and poverty.

    [collapse]
    After all that you can't expect her to have all her marbles now can you? Overall, this is a story about two people that grew up twisted and seriously messed learning how to "person" and how to work the kinks out in a functional relationship *wink* (and yes the smut can be excessive but if you read it the first time then by the 2nd or 3rd read through you can skim)
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk, gosh I hope this posts with all the spoilers correctly!

Maybe it's best not to read this if you want real deep plot. I was searching for something with yandere ml, not much politics, and some smut and this is perfect for that.

Sigh. 11/10

My first review ever, I just had to.

I can't get over this book, I just keep sighing, I'm in love (I felt the same way about grandmaster of demonic cultivation)

This book is so satisfying, probably one of the most satisfying book I've ever read. I love it, so so love it. A tag is missing from the ones listed 'Devoted Love Interest', Hugh/Hugo is so devoted. The MC Lucia is great, she really gives the ML grief (not bad, read and you'll understand ?) they both do?.... more>> Everything in this book just perfect. Lucia ?, Hugo ?, Damien ?, Eve ?

I love all the characters. The side story 6 brought tears to my eyes, Hugo and Lucia are soulmates no doubt.

I completely recommend this book. <<less

The absolute worst. The both fall in love in about 2 milliseconds because their bodies go together well during s*x, and all the MC does is eat, sleep, and have s*x. In the beginning, I remember the ML being "impressed" or "shocked" cuz she was washing her own clothes, despite being a princess, oh boo hoo. This gives such a sense of spoiled entitlement. The peasants, maids, and common folk during this time have the worst lives ever, barely getting enough to eat, working tirelessly for meager amounts, and here... more>> she is, a princess who does NOTHING getting to eat for free but has the audacity to think her life is so hard because she has to wash her own clothes and get her own food from the kitchen and her father ignores her. Mind you he doesn't torture her, imprison her, bully her or do anything at all really. She thinks her brother is horrible for giving her off to a fat old count when she was the one who just sat there everyday eating, sleeping, doing nothing to prove her worth and do SOMETHING since she is royalty and idk maybe you could do something of value but noooo, so she's mad she didn't get married off to a good looking young guy. I know that compared to other princess' it may seem like "torture" but it's annoying. <<less

  • Came for the hook of a second chance time travel story (those being my bread and butter and I usually finish even the mediocre ones because I love them so much).
  • Found myself pleasantly surprised by the smut being not just tolerable but well written.
  • Ended up staying for the extremely addictive plot and characters in the novel.
  • I even ended up caring about the fates of all of the side characters too (despite that with half of the novels I read usually end up forgetting their names let alone being *invested* in them).
  • The translation quality was amazing.
  • All said and done this is a 4.5/5 made into one of the rare 5/5s by the quality translator.

Whelp, never expected my first 5-star review to be a sm*t novel but here we are.

The organization of this story really takes on the meaning of a nobleman's revenge (Chinese idiom). You can tell that Author-nim had a really good grasp on the plot progression and must've been very detailed when first planning out the story. Sometimes a particular and somewhat insignificant detail in an early chapter played a big part 10 or so chapters later.

What makes me feel very satisfied after finishing this story is that every problem had... more>> a conclusion. There were next to none loose ends, and the ones that are there aren't that important.

Moreover, the side-stories did their purpose of wrapping up the story nicely than leaving me with more questions. I truly felt the end of this story was the actual end. I know that might sound strange, but I've been disappointed by multiple stories that was the exact opposite.

As for the sm*t portion, I'm not gonna talk about that at length. Just know that more than or equal to ~50% of the story is sm*xy times. Both cringey and satisfying (?) at the same time. MC and ML have a very healthy relationship (if you ignore some of yandere-ish qualities of the ML) both physically and mentally. <<less

Oh my God, I can't begin to express how much I love this book. Duke Taran is my favorite ML ever. EVERRRRRRRR.

Unlike those other MLs who are overbearing yet they still make their FL get into trouble because of some damn admirers who thinks FL doesn't deserve ML, Duke Taran is not like that. Oh my gosh, before any problem could even arise, he makes sure to trample them and pull the roots. That's how you protect your lady! Don't let some other obsessive tramps cause harm because of your... more>> damn superior looks. (Yeah, I'm ranting because for the past few dats most books I've read are MLs that aren't even on the same league as our Duke Taran)

I'm not saying that this book has no problems or whatnot. FL due to her "past" memories, she gets to be cool headed and be able to head society with her experiences. Theur dynamic is so awesome and cute. And fluffy. (Even tho we can't really describe Duke Taran as fluffy with how wild of a beast he is in fighting and in... bed)

ANYWAY, it's a great damn read! Please read. One of my faves! <<less

Well, you guys see that I'm a kinda guy who never wrote something like review in the first place. I will only worte something if it is very bad or wasted my time. If it's good I will never do it because my others would do it. But this time I literally doing this because it made me do it. That's how the novel is....

FL and ML are great. Equally emphasized. Well the End is kinda heart wrenching for me (instead of touched, it plucked the heart out of me).... more>> This doesn't mean a tragedy ending, a good one on its own right.

Well I just read this book for fun, but I got to learn "more you love more you loses"and "Time is Curse" <<less

(note: I am writing this review about 2-3 months after I had already finished the story. I am writing it now because I am looking at potentially rereading the story.)

this is one of the best, translated novels I've read in a while. it's also my first translated Korean novel too. I accidentally stumbled upon it when I was searching for more novels to read. it took me a while to start it because I was finishing up some other ones, and I saw how long this was, so... more>> I wanted to wait. I binged the whole book in 2 days, which in hindsight was probably not a good idea, but it was worth it. I had been itching for a good romance book to really get into for a while now and haven't found one that would catch my fancy. however, I am so glad I stumbled upon this book.

admittedly, I was kind of annoyed by the whole miscommunication trope between the two main leads, but it resolved itself... eventually. it annoys me, but I know it was done for a reason. doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Spoiler

i would've liked to see more about damien and his potential love interest that was teased in the extras, but I know that the extras were already running kind of long. I hope that there's a sequel out there for them and that I stumble upon it sometime in the future (perhaps when I already know how to read/speak Korean).

[collapse]

one thing I don't like is the absolute 180 Hugo does after he falls in love with Lucia. I just remember feeling that the transition he made from a "blood thirsty demon" to "love-sick husband" to be a little too quick? it felt like one moment he was the demon and then all of sudden he was in love with her and his past self seemed to have ceased to exist. I know the saying is that "love changes people", but that doesn't mean that part of his personality should just disappear.
Spoiler

I mean, he was raised as an assassin for many years.

[collapse]
my point is, I would've liked to see a smoother transition for his character growth. idk, I did binge read the book in 2 days so the chapters were all melting into one another for me. maybe I will see it this second time around. <<less

I just finished the novel and still can't move on. Why is there no 'next' button anymore. O (╥﹏╥) o

100% RECOMMENDED!!

ALERT: SMUT WARNING!

... more>> Actually, I'm not really fond with smut story, but this plot is really good. So you can just skip that part if you don't like it, but I still read it though. Hehe.

When I first read this story, it took me about 3 days just to finished Book 2 (around 24 chapters). I keep distracted by other things. For me, it was like still introduction phase. However, I cant stop reading after I get to the main point.

Some people may say it was a clinched story, like bad guy falling in love and be occ, but I still love it! They do not force their love, but took a slow step. But it doesn't mean they do not love each other. They just need time to realized because of their past circumstances.

So for new readers, prepare for the 'dog food' that you will be feed. *Sigh* I'm feel pathetic for being single. <<less

Overall rating: 4.2. Definitely worth the read. Actually, some chapters left impressions on me that I've read them not just once or twice after I finished the novel.

~~~~~
The novel's overall theme was a classic love story of a warm and innocent-looking yet smart princess and a dominant and aloof yet emotionally wounded top-of-the-ladder duke, who both have their hearts and pains hidden from the other. Honestly, I've read enough of these kinds of stories so I was a bit hesitant in reading this. The reviews are good though (within my... more>> scale) so I've decided to try, and thankfully it was worth it.
The story was set in the a kingdom named Xenon where the nobles and the king were on the top of the power pyramid. As I recall (I maybe wrong, sorry in advance), the places - academy, capital, etc - were not vividly defined except for "The North", mainly because it's ruled by the male lead, which is a bit sad because I like to imagine the countries in the stories I read. In return, what was clearly described was the political and social dynamics of the country.
Spoiler
The story starts to flow when the FL (MC) tries to change her future that she has seen in her dream by proposing a marriage contract to the ML. Then they marry. Afterwards, they got drawn towards each other, they fight (because of MC's health), they make up, they got a bit closer again, they fight (because of insecurities), etc. (It just repeats the cycle) until the point where they become a loving couple who raised a loving family.
[collapse]
What I liked about this story was that while the main couple's outlooks change, they swept the people around them into the change too. In other words, the story also gave importance to the POVs of the characters around the main couple (they were not just back drops or cannon fodders, they have their own personalities and feelings too), and sometimes, I think what they say made the story more interesting than what the leads had to say.
The bright Lucia (the princess) with a positive outlook on life and the strong Hugo (the duke) with the hate-the-world and I-do-it-because-I-can character balanced too well (this made it a bit cliche for me) that I once thought that this novel will definitely become boring at some point, but thankfully that did not happen. Both started as distinct individuals who only think that the other is 'interesting' or 'convenient' but as the story progressed, they ended up as the loveliest and most envied couple in Xenon who depend and cherish each other more than their own selves.
Lastly, I would also like to applaud the translator (RubyMaybe) for a work well done. I especially like the foot notes since they explain the context when I didn't quite understand what the raw implied. Thank you very much for translating this novel.
Again, worth the read. I promise. <<less
I finished this novel within 3 days, and I have to say, I truly enjoyed it. I'm not particularly fond of reading Asian novels, and I've only gotten into it recently because I couldn't wait for the webtoon to update. I will definitely be exploring other books and genres from now on. Anyway, onto the review:
Premise 10/10: I liked the idea of dreaming of the future, striving to change it and contract marriages. I've always been into that sort of thing, so I may be a little biased. Overall, it... more>> deserves a full mark. If you simply dislike contract marriages, then that's no reason to give a low rating because it's in the tags.
Plot 7/10: I didn't hate the plot at all. There was a handful of drama, and a lot of smut. Though many complain about the amount, I believe the novel was meant to portray their everyday life. I personally wouldn't take my own word for it since I'm not sure what counts as a 'normal' amount of s*x, and I don't want to know either.
Character development 8/10: Honestly, I don't think Hugo's development was very sudden
Spoiler
it was explained clearly that a really high s*x drive and blood lust ran in the Taran blood. At first, I never liked Hugo since he was only driven by his desires; though, he comes to regret it later on after he tastes true emotional love. Personally, I loved the part where he finally let go of his brother's death and opened up about his family secret since he was relieved by the fact that Lucia would love all of him no matter what.
[collapse]
Overall, the characters getting over their insecurities and changing was really well executed. It deserves the 8/10.
Characters 6/10: Honestly the following characters
Spoiler
Sophia, Anita and David were really terrible antagonists. I really wish there were more cunning intelligent ones because truthfully, it feels as if they're pissed that they haven't smashed in a while. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion. Other than that, Hugo and Lucia were irritating at first but I don't have complaints.
[collapse]
Ending 10/10: I have no complaints about the ending:
Spoiler
Our characters professed love to each other, Lucia finally got preggos, Hugo's reaction to her going through labour was the funniest sh*t ever (I totally agree with you Fabian), Damien got to know his little sister and both of the protagonists' secrets were confessed to each other. I often wonder if the male leads ever get to know that wifey was reincarnated in other stories that is!
[collapse]
Overall: 4.1 stars <<less
In one moment you'd think you've read through many chapters but when you check, it's actually just past a few. Then in another, you'd think you've read through a few but then it's actually past a lot.
The pace of the story is just right so there are no boring moments. The story just pulls you in, so at times it felt like a long time passed or that it was short. Tho there were some parts that felt abrupt (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) but I'm definitely not complaining.
I specially like... more>> the pace of their romance as it wasn't too abrupt neither did it just happen blindly just cause the author said so.
Spoiler
If we're talking about favourites, I'd say I liked everything about the story but I specially like that time when Lucia was making Hugo miserable just before they confirmed their relationship.
It totally satisfies my guilty pleasure of seeing male leads suffer before successfully getting the female lead. Hihihihi (I have something against playboys) And among all female leads I've ever known, Lucia's the only one who's made me feel fully satisfied.
So, fellows with the same kink! Read ahead!
[collapse]
Moreover, in my opinion, the characters very much contributed in the success of the story. They are all in-depth as they have their own personalities and background which made it easy to empathise with them and like them (except two dead certain someones).
It's not a perfect story, as I've honestly skimmed through a few parts, but it definitely is a wonderful tale of love.
Two complete opposites meet and naturally falls in love as they both bravely face and overcome their insecurities and cowardice as they find solace and acceptance in each other.
Sounds simple and like most romance story but it never fails to make me admire each character as it's actually hard to go through in reality.
ps. The (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) is definitely (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ? <<less
I was actually looking for a novel that has a lot of steamy romance actions (lol perv much) but seriously this is actually one of the best stories with a lot of smut scenes that I came to love without actually needing those scenes that made me read it in the first place and that's saying a lot. Lol. So basically, even without those smut scenes, I always looked forward to how the stories and all those mysteries unfold up until the very end. And I did shed some tears... more>> during the last side chapters and though I already had an idea about its flow, I was still in awe how the author was able to connect everything and made such a truly magical story. So if you're looking for hot ahem novels with substance then I highly recommend this. You'll definitely love the story in general and the smut scenes let's just say that they are an added bonus.
P. S. Yes I keep on saying smut. Lmao.
  1. P. P. S I was reading a few reviews and I just felt the need to defend Lucia. You can't just blame her for everything and accuse her for being lazy all throughout her life in the palace and that it's all her fault and that everything happened in that "dream" was because of her. Not everyone could cope up in a tragedy the way you want them to. Her only family died when she was only 12 and she was immediately thrown in a place where wealth and power is everything. She don't have anyone to rely on or even ask questions with not even maids so how would she be able to know what she should do in a place like that. You expecting her to be what you think she should be and criticizing her all throughout is beyond me. She didn't even know about menstruation lmao. But I do get your point, it's just that not everyone can be strong and smart the way you want them to be especially to a kid with no one around to support or guide or even just simply talk to them with. The fact that she continue living in that dream despite everything was already enough for me to know that she's a strong heroine. Not a lazy one that you accused her to be.
-- This reviews contains SPOILERS (read at your own discretion) --
TL;DR: a good romance, not too long, quality character development; some questionable plot mechanics.
At first glance, this novel is like the many other "reincarnation-type" light novels in which the MC gets a second crack at life - a do-over with the added advantage of the previous life's knowledge.
In my opinion, the entire premise that she experienced a life's worth of memories in a premonition-like world was completely and utterly far-fetched and not well justified for two reasons (other than that... more>> it's a fantasy plot device) :
  1. If it were a dream, there is no way she could remember most of the elements as clearly as she did. Not to mention she would remember a tremendous amount of information about one specific person at an awfully convenient time (say for example, in the midst of an introduction).
    Spoiler
    In the side stories, it's revealed that she had spent the later portion of her life simply and peacefully with none other than the Duke, and yet she forgot this until she saw a brooch. If you treat this as a side-story independent of the main story, then yes, it's cute and fluffy, but otherwise, it isn't very logical.
    [collapse]
  2. She so easily accepted the idea that her dreams gave her foresight into the future and the events that would/should unfold. Sure, she justified by a few events that took place in both time-lines, but it would not be natural to assume that is how the future must play out. This was to the point that she was utterly shocked when something didn't happen the way she expected it to even though she was attempting to change the future herself.
Deciding to move on with the discrepancies in the whole dream premise, the romance is pretty good. It is quite annoying how dense the two are about the other's feelings and they play love-tag throughout 90% of the novel. Although frustrating for the reader, your heart can't help but go out to them and hope they resolve they come to an understanding.
The MC is shy and innocent (almost too innocent - during the mature scenes, she seems to always be verbally refusing while physically resisting, which I find quite distasteful).
Spoiler
which continues even 10 years after their marriage
[collapse]
. Although annoyed by this at first, I realized it's what makes her a strong MC.
I like that the Duke is this cold, demon-like character who will stop at nothing to protect his family and how this aspect of him doesn't really change through the novel. That being said, of course he warms up to his wife and is the most gentle with her only. I'd even argue that his character development is greater than the MC's.
The way the author wraps up misunderstandings and turns them into elements for character development and strengthening of the couple's bond is quite satisfying to experience. <<less
Well written story, and well translated too. Plot progression and characters are stable throughout the main story. So you get a sweet love story without major gaping plot holes. Though some characters lack depth or would be unlikely to exist, the story is a nice light read.
But I don't recommend reading the side stories at the end. To make it sweeter, the author broke some of the character settings. I'm mainly referring to the Hugo chapter, but Hugo already went out of character in the main story so that's to... more>> be expected. <<less
