Hrm. Tags aside, the decision making of the ML/MC pretty much would have made them cannon fodder in any other novel. Even giving them some grace (because zombies aren’t necessarily common in an alternate reality and no one expects the apocalypse), I found myself shaking my head. A lot.

I’m sure the author is a lovely person, but there was no continuity from one paragraph to another. At many points I doubted that the author remembered what was going on at all and several translator notes note as much.

And... there is... more>> just nothing between the MC/ML. (I’ll pick up anything for a good apocalyptic story, tags aside). But there is no chemistry, no hints of anything. I don’t even get the sense that they know much about each other at all. Just a regular familial relationship. (I stopped about halfway through).

I’m as flummoxed as the older brother - who was actually pretty rational.

I gave it 3 stars for the translation. <<less

Yes, this is real in*est. It was an alright read. Kudos to the author for not making black people seem like freaks compared to some other authors.

On the bad side, it not realistic in a lot of sense. So things will happen where you go wth. Like for example, the easy acceptance of the father and son relationship. There were no hurdles there. Not one.

Every female character has a crush on the ML or the occasional MC. And it gets old real quick.

The relationship between all the characters are so... more>> shallow, you'll finish it and realize you dont know much about these characters at all.

And all these combinations make this an airy read. Where you dont feel much for any of the characters. <<less

YES, I CAME FOR THE in*est! Guilty!! ?

And I hoped for smut! But it was only slightly, barely smutty... ok not really. ?

Otherwise this story is nothing mind-blowing but not bad. It's a blend of "The Reborn Otaku's Code of Practice for the Apocalypse" and "Back to the Apocalypse". Sometimes I felt like I was reading an Apocalypse cooking and hoarding book.

Spoiler

Expect zombie crystal cores, magic spaces, evolving powers, pets, LOTS OF FOOD, and the gathering of materials. Don't expect too much struggle cause they are over prepared. There are a few tense moments, but it's rare because most of the dangerous stuff is given a mention without much emphasis on it.

[collapse]

LOTS OF SIDE CHARACTERS IN THIS SUCKER! So it can be hard to keep up with sometimes, especially when many of the names seem alike.

My biggest gripe...? Warning, rage ahead:

Spoiler

The MC! This brat claimed to be so mature, Mr. I'm Actually Twenty, acted immature the WHOLE book. For example, he clung to his father like a child. It's fitting the author had him reborn at the age of 16, BUT HE ACTED MORE LIKE 12!

He got angst over his love for his father and ran away (literally) like a coward after their first time (s*x) together instead of having a mature adult discussion.

He kept wanting to bu*t in or prove himself like an insecure person does. AND THAT F*CKING ANNOYED ME. SIT DOWN SOMEWHERE!

SERIOUSLY, some of the things he did to prove himself made NO D*MN SENSE! For instance, he wanted to put together a team. He did. And then... That's it?!?! He did nothing with them! WHAT THE H*LL WAS THE POINT!??! ?

[collapse]

I kind of wanted more story on the older brother.
Spoiler

I liked the older brother. He was trained to be the heir and it shows. Far more mature.

I felt kind of bad for him since he was slightly pushed to the side. The MC often acted like his mother instead of his younger brother.

The fact he was hetero in a gay story, I can kind of understand why the author didn't give him much story. I wanted him to hooked up with the Zhang guy though ?

[collapse]

Because I read this MTL somethings might have been lost in translation, but overall, not bad. <<less

So I got through the 320 chapters.

It's a HE happy ending. Magical space, modern world, rebirth, second chance, mafia ML, businessman ML, older ML he's like 32 to 36 in the novel (?), Zombie apocalypse

MC does eventually tell his father ML about the space but it's more like after the apocalypse started. And poor big bro was still worrying about eating all of the MCs fruit till there's nothing 😂 I feel sorry for him he only found out months later.

I actually don't find the MC to be as childish... more>> as others mentioned. It's not annoying at least.

⚠️ Warning real in*est

Yes it's legit in*est. At first I thought maybe MC's mom (who slept around) tricked ML into accepting another man's child into his home but wasn't the case in the end. Especially with the previous life thing and the file that never got read. I always thought they weren't related but till the end they are legit blood relatives. Some of the descriptions can make you cringe if you aren't into in*est (fictionally) like ML falling for MC at such an early age or the whole shower thing (honestly ML you perv 😂).

Overall I still like an older hot uncle type ML so this wasn't bad. Even as the first in*est novel I've read.

Warning ⚠️ canabalism is mentioned twice. The first time was a more detailed situation which was a bit gross for the active mind. And the second time it's mentioned it's just mentioned in one of the extras.

Spoiler

Chen li 😭😭😭 ah the soldiers in the end times have it rough but it's ingrained in their bones.

The big bro is not gay 😞 feel kind regards of sad for Gu and Zheng (?) On that but whatever they aren't mentioned again anyway. He has a kid later and is married.

Tang Qi and Xiao do end up in a relationship 🤣 all that teasing paid off but it's implied that xiao ends up as the bottom

I am disappointed with how the novel turned out. I do not mind in*est, but the MC is too obsessed with his father. All his thoughts and actions revolves around his father and he barely interacts with other characters. It would have been nice to read more about his relationship with his brother. And it feels like a waste that only he and his father get to enjoy all the benefits of the space, when the brother knows about the space too and the other members of their group so... more>> far have been completely loyal. <<less

Ok, this is interesting enough.
no rating for now. And I think...
Spoiler

The ML should be his daddy Sihuang (*ˉ︶ˉ*) and maybe they aren't related by blood (all just a guess but it's the most likely answer to the mysterious daddy Lol)

It's a good story, but there's still some situations that wasn't satisfying but I think it might get better later on the story.

A nice, lighthearted read. Entertaining enough to spend a couple evenings. Not much to say other than that.

Concerning MC "clinging to his father like a child" - he seemed traumatized by what happened in his past life.

Spoiler

You know, all this "his father died in his arm from taking a bullet for MC, after MC was manipulated by evil relative to lure father out".

[collapse]

Maybe it is just me, but is seemed pretty traumatizing.

Also, 20 yo is not that old just because MC thinks it is.

father-son in*est stories always ick me out a bit and the only one I actually liked was the manga Not Equal. That being said, this story was both surprising bland for an end of the world scenario and occasionally bewildering ... more>>
Spoiler

the ML was told the MC was his son but he never bothered with a paternity test so the truth is ultimately left up to the reader. The reactions of the other family members were nonexistent and there was universal acceptance. No one thought less of the ML for having s*x with his seventeen-year-old son or thought he was taking advantage of the boy and no one thought it was strange that the two hooked up, nor brought up the fact that they were closely related. No one was grossed out by it. The mc's bro was a little uncertain and uncomfortable for a whole chapter but that's it. Oh, and it's the end of the world. But that is secondary to the MC chasing his Daddy. The MC isn't the smartest character but he's not a total idiot MC, though he's often treated (and sometimes acts) more like he's a small child rather than a teenager. And the whole rebirth into what I can only assume is an alternate reality isn't explained, (though I admit to assuming it has something to do with the jade necklace since that's a fairly stereotypical trope in these eow stories).

[collapse]

the novel is kind of tepid, as there isn't a lot of tension or much conflict to stir up emotions nor do they undergo any kind of hardship as they are, by eow standards, very rich and very OP; they are never desperate, hungry, dirty, or scared. By the time I hit c125, my interest had simply faded out and I felt no need to continue. I'll try again at a later date. <<less

Well overall it's okay. As long as you can tolerate in*est (or convince yourself it's pseudo-in*est), there's really nothing standout about this story - which is not necessarily a bad thing tbh, it makes for an overall easy read. Especially for people that like Chinese zombie apocalypse settings with nuclei and superpower, like me!

And for me personally, I also *LOVED* the (early) relationship between the main characters - yes, in*est and all. Simply because I really like a teasing seductive dynamic where there are intense feelings and obvious that we... more>> as readers can swoon over but the characters for some reason can't act on them. And I tend to be overly rational, so if there's no justifiable reasoning why they're not being acted on it turns me away (eg. s*upid misunderstandings, one party being mean, cheating etc.) - but obviously in*est is a very justifiable reason to not act on emotions, and the apocalypse makes for an appropriate enough setting that I can reasonably accept them trying to seduce each other.

Spoiler

Cause if "hot daddy" fell in love w his 15-yo son (and attraction at first sight at 12????), AND actively tried to seduce, in ANY other setting, uhh...... But as it is, in the first lifetime he kept it totally secret because he didn't want to drag him into the abyss, so I'm like uh okay sketchy why you were in love but whatever you still get a gold star

[collapse]

That's also why I got bored later on, when the blandness of the story and the flaws in the character became more apparent. Things I could originally ignore some of became more blatant and the plot didn't become interesting enough to keep going. I find that mid-late stage is what differentiates a mediocre, decent, and great [apocalypse, but also many regular] story - that's when it looks beyond daily struggles into big picture (more of world picture / "end game"), and where some stories excel whereas others were obviously shallow or monotonous.

And it's also really important to strike a balance in flow at this transition, before "daily" becomes too boring. I personally found that this story took too long to transition to big picture and the immaturity in early flaws really magnified; MC's character still too immature & inconsistent (even w his trauma and whatnot, buddy ur in the apocalypse), their group hasn't done anything monumental, no development or attachment to side characters, and repeated troupes are really eyecatching (like every powerful leader must be an ultra-handsome man, everywhere is BL relationships, MC still only dances around ML all the time, etc.). And it's not like I need them to save the world or anything, but it's definitely more difficult if they don't have any big problem or foe they've been actively addressing, and requires a lot of other attractions that this story isn't quality enough to have (Reborn Otaku being a great example of not needing to be a hero to be a great story).

Things I Disliked: (and to be honest I think potential readers shouldn't read the below, because I find it makes the flaws more evident when you're trying to enjoy a story and thus you don't when you potentially could've)

(1) MC literally only revolved around his dad. And for most of the story that I read it was okay, because he still contributed his part and it's not like he was wasting time nor trying to be a lead, but later on especially after he tries career for one chapter and tries to push himself into a more authoritative "on par" role, it becomes way more glaring that he's not actually all that smart or useful (besides space, which he keeps super secret). And it doesn't make sense how he's strong either, when he hasn't even trained as much as his bro for most of it and the story doesn't really say that mental strength increased fighting or shooting prowess. But honestly this was still not that bad for most of the story, and only got annoying when author tried to make him this competent character even though every big event he either screwed up or I didn't think was smartly handled anyway.

(2) While I get the space should be a super secret, it's SO secretive that it doesn't really make sense to me and feels awkward. Even from the son for an absurd amount of the story, just because you don't want anyone than your dad to go in? It's literally used just as a way to give our two characters an opportunity to develop romance, but quite poorly done and continues way longer than it should've. Tbh it feels like they didn't need the brother in the story at all (I guess to give him something else to worry about, or to carry on the bloodline, or to prove it's not just because of the parent-child relationship there's feelings? Either way, I feel like I would've enjoyed more w/o him there to remind me how poorly side characters are developed lol).

(3) ML is actually not all that smart or amazing either. Sure he'll occasionally have some moments, but the author will spin a tiny thing huge and it just feels overblown. Or he's just ruthless, but not actually all that genius. He's not even smart in the background, like CEOs who somehow take their company to Fortune500 while spending all hours w their lovers, because his troupe doesn't actually accomplish all that much for most of the story. Which would be okay if they didn't always play him as such an absolutely incredible character. And of course, he's written to be super strong, but it feels like he doesn't even fight that often in situations that matter either. There are also some incidents I'm just like that's actually a super dumb idea and only works because you're the author's son.

Spoiler

Neither of them even thought of ways to test utilizing the space after they could both separately access it, which seems like the most basic thing to do. So many other things around this; they on'y seriously considered "testing" with the water around c230

[collapse]

(4) I got over this but he was like "wait my heart is beating" = guess I'm uber in love with my dad and I will do anything to be with him!!!! He was convinced so quickly, barely any struggle, like ???

(5) Everything is easy in this story or troubles were already planned for. Which isn't always a bad thing, but does get kinda boring / anti-climactic.

But again, overall, still an okay story. Could've been 100 chapters shorter is probably my main thought lol. I don't even know what the end goal yet and I read to c239, and it seems to be quite a ways away before they actually focus on thinking about the bigger situation that they allude (not very well) to.

Tbh the main thing I'm thinking is why I wrote such a long review for a story I'm gonna forget about tomorrow, lmao. <<less

Gave up just before the end! It's not as bad as I was expecting, perhaps the reviews I read before lessened the blow a bit and made it seem less annoying XD but yeah! I consider it an okay read overall (oh, and the MTL, when the raw is plugged into Google Translate, is incredibly comprehensible = 85-90%, so there are no issues caused by the incomplete translation.)

Summary: The premise of the novel is that the MC (Tang Miao) died and woke up back in time. At least, that... more>> what it appears like at first. He goes back to the age of 16 and wanted to improve his relationship with his father, who had sacrificed for him in his previous life. Only, things keep going wrong after his rebirth. First, he discovered that he had a large magical space where one can plant and store living things. Second, he began to have dreams of an upcoming apocalypse -- a zombie apocalypse. He stubbornly tried to deal with things himself at first, but soon enough, he had to borrow the strength of his father (who is the ML, BTW! Called, Tang Sihuang) to start preparing for the upcoming calamity.

The rest of the story that follows is survival-based. There isn't really any over-arching goal here, so it reads more like a slice of life novel. You know, the day to day life of a father-and-son pair in the apocalypse. That kind of thing. Their style is powerful but low-key, so their movements are very restrained most of the time, which makes the focus of the story sometimes stray from survival to cooking and hoarding materials lol.

CHARACTERS: 6/10

One of the main issues people seem to have of this novel are the characters. Most specifically, the MC. I didn't find him completely unlikeable, but I didn't like him either --- so I guess that's me agreeing with the general consensus. LOL. Other than that, I still think that the overall character development was okay. Nothing too ground-breaking, but nothing too bad either.

Tang Miao (MC)

The MC is your typical, stubborn and idiotic shou. His character is a bit inconsistent, sometimes he's inexplicably smart and astute, sometimes he's just very very dumb LOL. There is a reason for most of his actions though -- in his previous life, his father sacrificed himself for him, so in this life, the most important thing to him is his father.

Tang Sihuang (ML)

The ML is very close to your typical ML prototype. He's stoic, possessive, and powerful. I didn't think much about him as a result DX

ROMANCE: 6/10

Because of the in*est factor, some people may seriously dislike this novel. I knew of it in advance and didn't mind since the MC and ML were both adults (both mentally and physically). The development was also okay. Kind of cliche at times, but nothing too bad.

SETTING: 9/10

The setting of this novel is very similar to your typical CN Zombie Apocalypse. Humans have evolved superhuman abilities as a result of a cosmic accident, and there are zombies roaming about with increased strength. However, there's less attention to humans leveling up, because the function of zombie nuclei remains mysterious until the end. I like this setting because of the survival aspect, so my rating is pretty high~

PLOT: 8/10

As mentioned, the focus of the story is really more on the slice of life, survival aspect. The main CP doesn't rush to establish a name for themselves, instead focusing on collecting materials and just surviving the day-today apocalypse outside. I happen to like this slow-paced development, but some may find it a bit boring.

RATING: 3.6/5

To wrap things up quickly, my opinion of this novel is that it just so happened to hit some right spots for me, but it may not be for everyone! <<less

Spoiler

ML (mc's father) had realized his romantic feelings towards MC long before MC did; he didn't make any moves on MC in their first life because MC only thought of him as a father.

[collapse]

MC annoyed me a bit, especially in the early and middle part of the novel. He really wanted to get stronger so his dad would think of him as an equal and that sometimes means him rushing in even though his dad already told him to stay put /yell/

the writing style is also a bit annoying. The writer could go on for paragraphs describing meals and stocks MC got in details. I felt like I was reading a food journal and a logistics report.

+forgettable side characters. Ml's family dabbled in gangster stuff so ml's bodyguards were named 1st-9th (i think) and took his family's name so it's pretty chaotic loool <<less
