Life, Once Again!

Description

Sometimes, as we go about with our lives, we all happen to think of one specific thought at least once.

What if… I could go back to “that” time?

The funny thing is, the moment you think such a thought is the precise moment when you came back to the past, from the future.

“One more time.”

Life, once again.

I don't read a ton of Slice of Life, but I'm glad I gave this one a shot. Even though I'm only on Chapter 30 as of this review, it's one of the few novels I anticipate for each day.

I like how the main character thinks and acts - his previous life isn't just a random plot point to start the novel, but an ongoing theme that's relevant in his thought processes and actions so far. It's one of those novels where I feel like as a reader you grow... more>> alongside the main character and it imparts important life values. Hopefully it stays as good as it has been so far, or at least good enough. <<less

it' not your standard second chance novel with a villain or a revenge plot simply a good guy trying to live his life to the best of his abilities. There is not a simple goal like I wanna be this or that he is still trying things see what he likes.

It's slice of life with a believable mc

It turned out quite dark rather suddenly at around chapter 500-ish while we readers were enjoying the fluffs and mc's career lol.

Anyway, I've looked at Thousandswords' spoiler review and while it is quite disheartening I am still deathly curious about it.. But since it's gonna turn up like what I've imagined it (ch662), I decided to temporarily drop it until the translation is about to finish (including the extras).

I like this novel. It's well written. The story is full of practical knowledge and experience. The author is so good at describing and explaining the harsh and cold sides of society that I don't even know if I'm learning philosophy or reading a slice of life webnovel. This is also the part that I love most. I have learned a lot.

Well, to be honest, the MC - Han Maru's development is clear and positive. The author focus a lot on each character's personality, which sometimes quite unnecessary since it's... more>> too long and makes me tired of reading. But it's also the plus point of the novel.

The only frustrating thing about this masterpiece is undoubtedly the ending. I haven't read the ending yet but reading the spoilers only is enough for me to drop this novel right this instant. Perhaps the author think this might by the uniqueness and distinction of LOA from other novels, but I am not a fan of this type of ending. STILL, THE NOVEL WORTHS READING. I SWEAR. It's so good, it reflects exactly our life, making me feel ashamed of what I've done sometimes. <<less

Its very well written but its incredibly slow. Someone else said it's not the kind of story you can binge and 100% agree.

I've been trying to binge it and read faster so the plot moves faster but if you want to enjoy the book thats not the way to go.

The one thing that really bugs me about this novel is ... more>>
Spoiler

the MC's girlfriend and her lack of a name. Why. Just why. I need the author to explain why the one person the MC is obsessed with, doesn't have a name. I also thought that their relationship was a bit lacking. I wasn't quite sold on the ship. Their interactions just don't feel that deep or emotional? Part of it is because their relationship develops so fast compared to the rest of the story due to the MC knowing everything about her. The nameless thing bugged me because everytime she popped up again it was so hard to know what was happening. The translator was calling the gf Cute She Her.

[collapse]

Other than that I'm dropping this temporarily for my sanity and I'll pick it up again later. Since the reviews/ spoilers from people who have completed the novel are a lil disheartening. <<less

I really like this novel, it's a really slow-paced slice-of-life that focuses more on characters and their dynamics together rather than the plot. The author did a fantastic job with building the characters so far, and every one of them has a story of their own. I really loved it!

The plot and story is great and enjoyable. Its really realistic story and characters and have relatable backgrounds. The thing I don't like is the MC. He is cool and mature, but I hate how he is cares too much about not being friendly with people even if they are good people. It makes his previous life where he was kind look like a lie. He pretty much has only 1 friend who he shares his worries with (Daemyung) who can somewhat read him. It would be great if he... more>> was a bit more friendly to others who wants to be close to him instead of always putting up a mask. MC is pretty much only character I dislike in this story. <<less

I'm all for slice of life stories with its MC having mature personality, but this is kinda depressing in the way that MC just went through the motion without any reasonable planning of what he should do to make sure he has the best future ahead of him -- despite that's among his main concern thorough the story.

I mean, the man actually has mind reading ability, for god sake! It escapes me why author even bothered to give MC the cheat without the MC actually understanding the significance the ability... more>> could bring him for his career -- any career. He could literally be anything and still be extremely successful with that single ability alone, yet author decided to instead focus the story on dilemma between what MC want to do to have fun, and what he should instead do and what to give up to be successful.

You see, this dilemma actually makes a seriously thoughtful telling, yet the existence of the ability makes it such a great distraction that I failed to enjoy the story despite "adult-world" problems actually being my cup of tea due to how my real life's been going. Otherwise, it could be a far greater story without the ability even existing in the first place.

The focus of other characters' life is another concern of me. Sure it was great having lots of character not being one dimensional, but I can't help to complain whether understanding the depth of lots of other characters would really be relevant to the plot or not.

Finally though, getting the spoiler of how it ended completely stopped me from ever continuing.

Spoiler

MC ended up getting killed and then got re-Life "Once Again" to make sure he would eventually have happy ending by disregarding all the plots and buildups in the thousand chapters of the story, that's not the story I want to invest my time for.

Finally a Returner story where the MC acts his age. Lofty, detached, calculating and just playing with the kids.

This is a high quality story, so everything below a 5 would not be right.

IF I had to criticize some things it would be the following:

    • The acting club takes away from the regular school life (teachers, tests, classes)
    • Too many "accidental" personal connections (Maru stumbles across the magnate and the old actor, whereas based on his personality he should have calculated meetings, similar to the fox actress)
    • Too much fluff (Koreans just love their soap opera, hmm? Orphanages, bullying,...)
    • The whole angel explanation thing could be forsaken. This story does not need any super-powers!

This story is a pain. That's the best way I can describe this novel. A pain. It's mundane but had a charm to it which got my attention at first but over time, it felt like the author forgot that something mundane can still be well-paced. This novel is too slow and it's like 5 different stories occurring at the same time. We get insight into characters that don't matter to the overall story. It helps flesh out those characters but at the cost of slowing down the story. It... more>> takes forever for Maru to grow as a person and actor and it feels like he's going around in circles forever until he makes a sudden breakthrough in 1 chapter just to go around in circles again. <<less

At first I actually enjoyed the story quite a bit. It started off cliché—guy dies and by virtue of someone's goodwill towards him he gets to have a second chance. He'll also get abilities, but whether he discovers or uses them is up to him. There's a catch, though: he won't have his memories of the future so that he won't be able to take advantage of it or create some kinda paradox.

We start off with a regretful, good-hearted MC. He wants to make it up to the people he... more>> loves and realises he didn't appreciate them enough in his past life. He goes to school and realises he should do better, try new things, and make more friends. He feels bad for this one bullied kid whom he remembers will become successful in the future so he basically set him up to join a conversation with the classmates and assimilate him into the class so the bullies would leave him alone. Here we get to see that he's a good guy—he's feeling regretful and apologetic that he turned a blind eye to people's troubles, he's actively helping his family out, and he has a big enough heart to believe that even bullies can be redeemed.

But then everything changed. The MC, whom we were led to believe to be a good guy, isn't really all that good. It was even mentioned in the story itself—that the MC is kinda nice, but distant. Sometimes even cruel. He's quite mean, actually. Especially to women, except a select few like his girlfriend, his mum, and his girlfriend's mum. He doesn't hesitate to give his honest, scathing opinions. He can be very vocal about his views. He shows common courtesy and manners, but once he deigns somebody unworthy of his favour, he treats them like they're gum stuck on his shoe. His kindness only extends to people he likes, and unless it gives him some sort of merit without consequence, he won't actively lend a helping hand out to anyone.

Spoiler

In one part, there's a girl in his club who's having the worst day ever. She's literally one hair's breadth away from a meltdown. Everyone is worried but he just goes, "well, she won't ask for help, so why should I help?" Like it's a complete waste of time for him to even comfort her. But still, his friend was adamant about helping the girl so he ended up giving advice to his friend on how to diffuse the situation instead of wasting his time and energy to do it himself. He acts in a way that is clear that he doesn't particularly care about people, but he cares enough that the harmony isn't messed up too too much. I do admit that it's nice to see an adult in a child's body who actually act like a mature adult, but over the course of a few chapters he goes above and beyond and straight into heartless territory.

In the early part of the story the MC decides to join the theater club with his new friends out of an effort to branch off from his old life. Over time, he realises he's not passionate enough to commit to the club and would rather save his time to prepare for his future where he'd marry his wife and have his daughter again. He felt regretful that he couldn't manage to give them a good, comfortable life, so in this second run he decides to study a bit and make money so his family won't have to suffer as much. He wasn't serious about acting at all, even though the acting coach really wanted him to act since she thought he had talent (though I am unclear just how talented he actually is because all we get is basically everyone gushing about how good he was, and that was it). Literally everyone would just say, "oh, he's good!" but when you read the description of his performance, it's giving... nothing. Like there is nothing interesting about his performance. No poetic prose or flowery words to describe how good he actually is, why people think it's good, why people find him mesmerising, what his 'it' factor looks like. We just know he has 'it'. I digress. Later he comes to find out that the reason he was so drawn to acting was because his subconscious led him to it, since his wife was an actress, and that was his body's way of getting him closer to her. So he runs around like a headless chicken because he suddenly recalled memories that he's forgotten and eventually remembers where he'd seen her. He basically stalks her and openly confesses his interest, but she's not turned off by this at all. She actually finds his straightforwardness endearing and thinks of him as an actor she wants to stand side-by-side with. They eventually date.

[collapse]

Honestly, the main gripe I have about this story at the point I stopped, is the fact that I have no fricking idea what the hell his girlfriend's name is. Maybe it was mentioned in the early chapters and I forgot? Maybe the fact that she was not named was intentional on the author's part. Literally, every chapter, every interaction where the girlfriend is mentioned, she's only referred to as "she" or "his girlfriend" or "her friend" or "her daughter". Never by name. Even the side characters get name-dropped more often than her, who's supposedly the heroine. I have no idea if it's a translation problem or a me problem, but I for the life of me can't recall if her name had been mentioned before or what the hell it was. For being one of the most important characters in the story—literally being the love of the MC's life and his reason for even getting into acting to begin with—she is so incredibly... forgettable. Like after the MC got together with her, we maybe get like three scenes where they interact with each other and then suddenly it's like the author forgot she existed. Honestly, her whole entire character felt like something the author made up, barely mustered the energy to flesh her out, and then threw her to the backburner, and when the author forgot what they named her, they didn't bother going back to earlier chapters to check and just rolled with it.

And don't get me started on the morality issue—the whole entire time they parade the MC as if he's on some moral high ground; he stands up for the weak, he pushes back bullies, and he's a gentleman to the ladies. But in this story we see him enabling underaged drinking, even going along with whichever adult offering to buy him alcohol, and we see him tr*shing on anyone and everyone he deems to be a bother (one scene that bothered me was when he openly stared at this SC's body and proceeded to tell her, when she pointed it out, that she intended for people to look at her body so that's what he was doing). The MC literally went from someone who wants to help a bullied kid gain confidence to someone who ignores another aspiring actor who wanted to be his friend just because he was too friendly.

I got so burned out reading this story. The plot, as many has mentioned, is focused on slice-of-life, so we barely get any progression. We get to see glimpses of other characters' thoughts and lives, and despite being told that the MC is making an effort to become an actor, we don't really see much of said effort. The story is focused more on the intricate connections between the characters and not really on the MC's career. It's been 200+ chapters, and the MC still hasn't made an official debut yet. <<less

The story has an interesting premise. I like watching the MC grow as an actor and how his memories are slowly fading as he settle down into his new life. However, I don't really dig into the romance. I never liked the dynamic and interaction of ML and FL, I never felt the spark idk why. It's the reason why I'm dropping this novel but this is still an okay read I guess... Well I can only vouch up to the part that I read. I liked his journey but... more>> I just can't take the romance. <<less

I highly recommend this series. The diverse cast of side-characters breathe life into the world-building. And while many of them frequently encounter Han Maru, he is treated like an acquaintance, unlike how other MCs are treated like the center of the world. The characters have their own independent motivations driving their actions, and we see enough of their non-Maru related actions for them to be fleshed out as actual characters.

Honestly this story spoke to me on a certain level. The main character and how he is focused on the future and not enjoying the present and how he makes decisions based on the long term effects rather than the short term fun that teenagers enjoy. Also his wife and their interaction in this timeline where she does not know him but he knows her is very heartwarming. This story also had me feeling like I went back in time because I have certain nostalgic feelings and want to know... more>> them more even when I have never talked to them before. But I honestly do not care about the other people, his friends, his 'enemies' or anything like that. I just like him finding a love for acting and his relationship with his girl. <<less

it's really a great novel, if not one of the best. As for the ending well read it first until the ending then, and only then you can judge if it was bad or good. It's a slice of life that incredibly mirrors life, with some novel aspects of course. And if you drop it because you already know the ending but not the story, well if I tell you that the ending of your life is, you know, just death, will you drop it?

Fantastic SoL novel, with exceptionally written characters. If you can get past the slow pacing of the story, you have yourself a wonderful story. Each character is fully fleshed out and acts in a realistic manner. Their lives, their mannerisms, motivations and emotions are all laid bare for the reader to understand who, what and how they interact with one another in this novel in a way that isn't overbearing or repetitive. It is extremely refreshing to see a novel without any 2-dimensional cliched characters or characters that do fit... more>> that stereotypical mold of either being cartoonish evil or good etc..

Worldbuilding is fascinating as it explores the stardom of the acting industry as well as delving into the dark side of the industry.

It probably is the only novel on this site that I've read so far that has exceptionally unique characters.

Personally, the ending has been spoilt for me, but to take it for granted out of context can make it sound jarring, which can be applied for any story really. There is still a good half of the story left and I'll read more once more chapters snowball up. <<less

I actually like slow paced novels because they often deliver the most detailed and well thought off storylines.

This is the case with this novel as well.

However, the only conclusions that the arcs in this novel ever reach is. "YEA, Life sucks and people are a**holes.", MC is a little bit too stoic as well. Pretty much nothing moves him, he is truly an old man in the teenager's body. And this is both good and bad.

Ultimately though, the reason why I give it 4/5 rather than 5 is because, so... more>> far there has been 249 chapters I read and while I enjoyed every single chapter... the story still haven't reached the point where there is much satisfaction from conclusion of an arc. Hopefully it will happen in the future but with novel being 1027 chapters long, it might take time before the novel is worth full recommendation.

Right now the only people to recommend it are those that want to feel nostalgic about high school. <<less

It is reincarnation novel, but here are no cheats, no knowing feature. It is practically just Slice of Life. But has good development of all characters. MC are not some god, just a human with human weaknesses. MC are no hero no villain, just a simple human.

I really enjoy this novel :D
