Let Me Game in Peace

1 drop of blood = 1-Up

Other people game overnight, I game overnight and bleed.

Ever since the dimensional storms descended upon Earth, numerous dimensional zones have appeared, bringing with them all kinds of dimensional creatures—Immortals, Buddhas, Devils, Angels, Elves, etc.

Yet, all these strange dimensional zones can turn into dungeon instances on my phone. Other people risk their lives adventuring, I spend all my time gaming.

Monsters drop dimensional crystals that boost stats, imbue new skills, and join me as Companion Beasts. These Companion Beasts fight alongside me or alone, augmenting me with their skills and strength. Rare monsters in real life? I’ll just restart the game with a drop of blood to grind it.

I really need a blood transfusion.

The premise reminds me of Shadow Hack, but with a more intelligent MC. First Chinese MC ever to have enough patience to wait to test his new attack, instead of destroying whatevers in front of him the moment he masters it. It deserves 5-stars just for that.

A very good read. Not your average hot-blooded protagonist.

Spoiler

MC has an actual working brain.

My best description of this MC would be a flower in the wind. He goes wherever the wind blows. The MC has no true opinions, the author only wants you to think he does.

I fell for this until at some point, I realized that even though we were at chapter 240, the MC hasn't actually done something because he decided to. His actions were only taken because someone led him to it.

Another thing that struck me as odd about this novel was the MC's father and step-mother. The father... more>> is barely in his son's life yet somehow expects his son to do everything he asks and somehow, the MC always does it.

The step-mother is the same. She acts as if she cares and if she tells the MC to go left or right, he obeys. If she cared so much, she wouldn't have enrolled him in an event where he would have 100% been crippled if he didn't have his unique phone.

There were little things that bothered me here and there, and I was pretty much skimming at ch 200 so I'll have to stop here. <<less

When I'm reading I can't shake the feeling of reading a game walkthrough. This game decided to steal all game elements from Final Fantasy VII with a Chinese twist. The story is very static with very little change. Grind/loot/grind/loot/grind/loot. The MC feels bland with no strong feelings for anything. It´s like a fanfiction of different rpg games where the focus of the story is the game mechanics instead of the characters. They will probably make a mobile phone game out of this novel.

I tried to soldier on as much as I could, after a certain point I coudn't go on anymore.

The concept behind the story is one that gives some intrigue: I can grow powerful in real life by playing the game. This concept is then sorrounded by a series of problems that make the read sternuous the more you go further in.

    • The MC's character is the stereotypical young kid with an adult mind, often seen in these novels. Apart from that we know nothing else about him. It is always said that he wants to be more powerful, but never why, or what is his goal. There are a lot of comical remarks where he says to only want to game, but he is gaming to gain power and it is never stated why he seeks that power, or why did he seek it before meeting the game system. What were his aspirations, his dreams, etc...?. We are blindly following an MC without knowing what he wants or where he is trying to go. // On the contrary most of the supporting characters have some defined wants, and they act mostly based on those, leaving us puzzled at this inversion of characterization depth.
    • Tha author jumps from one thing to the next while losing track of the elements that he foreshadowed and never delivered, and delivering elements that he never foreshadowed. This creates a very messy feeling of incompleteness, while giving a vibe of grasping to any straw of the classic tropes seen in these cultivation novels.
    • Anything involving locations, distances and travels is such a huge mess that makes you question if the author is winging each chapter as it comes. There is a lot poor delivery when it comes to paiting a descriptive picture of the world (exluding those elements left suspensful on purpose) : the way in which characters can move about in it, the layout of dungeons, etc. What is ofetn perceived is for the characters to be in a location in one scene and suddely in another location in the next, without a smooth transition. The lack of details, and the messy delivery of the ones given, creates a void which can't be filled by the reader imagination

I like this novel. It's not the most well-written or beautiful novel, but it's certainly fun to read!

It has a lot of tropes and the plot armor is quite strong, but it's still enjoyable. Some illogical moments, but the overall story is cohesive and has interesting details. The worldbuilding is pretty unique! It's not like TCOSP or Monster Paradise. If you're looking for bonding with pets, it's pretty slight because most pets are like robots (also the lame ones are expendable). Only the super strong ones really get personalities (and... more>> even then, they're super slight).

Ignore the anemia and blood dropping parts if you get annoyed. They get less, and it's not worth dropping the novel just because of them.

I thought the MC's cheat would be super OP and boring, but the author manages it well. It's still OP, but it's an interesting way for the MC to get stronger over time. The MC's power-up rate was pretty stable. Enough to shock people, but still reasonable. It might feel like he's getting stronger too fast, but the MC's grinding is mainly off-screen, so he should be getting stronger at that rate. The cheat's a pretty creative one too, I haven't seen anything like it.

The MC is a genius with a cheat, but he still feels somewhat relatable/human. He's smart, ruthless when necessary, and really FOCUSED. The side characters are also interesting. They feel real, and they interact with the MC in fun and serious ways. I thought I'd dislike the family, but they're actually amusing (though the dad is pretty nonexistent). Also, I haven't seen a truly dumb important character yet (arrogant young masters aren't important). For a Qidian novel, this is a pretty solid one. Interesting enough for me to read 500+ chapters in one go and want more. <<less

Alright, this novel is a solid 2.5/5. I'll rate it three stars because of the decent translation.

I'll just go to my main complaint on this novel, the antagonists on this novel are so frustrating because the main character never made an enemy of any of them. It's always a side character who made them antagonistic towards the main character, and it's incessantly annoying. A lot of these antagonistic relationships devolve into life-or-death grudges when the main character doesn't even know why hes being targeted.

Also, no one seems to question the... more>> main character's antics. For example, despite playing a mobile game every waking hour, he mysteriously increases his strength. Another example is when he has a bunch of companions that are literally never seen before. Hes even interacted with people fairly high up in the government, and no one finds it suspicious that theres no records of any of them existing?

Another point, the main character doesn't have any goal. He just wants to game, but that makes him stronger. This makes the novel seem very superficial. He doesn't even have any family he wants to protect, his only family (his father) is already very well protected in a family he re-married into, and his step-siblings are annoying as shit. Speaking of his step-siblings, I despise the whole "enemy-turned-ally" thing, and it's super frustrating watching a character try to kill/humiliates/make things harder for the main character and you have to sit there knowing that they will become part of the main characters crew/harem. Your forced to sit through a whole pity-arc on why it's justifiable to mu*der someone even though they didn't do anything wrong.

Last point, is the main character's golden finger. It has surprisingly little presence in the novel, but maybe thats just me. He doesn't get that much stronger using it, and he is even surpassed by other people. In fact, his golden finger can't compare to some random cultivation technique he was given by an old man. The golden finger serves no purpose in this novel.

Overall, it's a solid meh. The power progression somehow slow yet abruptly fast at the same time, characters are rather 1d, and all the antagonists are annoying at best. <<less

First, if you think this novel looks interesting, give it a shot. Despite the low rating it's pretty decent for novels of this type. It has lots of the usual issues, like something being super rare and the MC needing to use their special goldfinger to get it, but then a few chapters later somehow other normal people have it too. There are plenty of other issues too, but the real problem is the MC.

The MC is a wet blanket. He had no motivations and doesn't care about anything. Normally... more>> in these types of novels the MC has a younger sibling and/or family that they care about. In this, the only family the MC has is a father, who he supposedly care about, but the father has about five lines in the beginning of the novel before mysteriously never being present, when he really should be. The only character the MC cares about is one who isn't even in the novel. He never does anything of his own volition except if its related to his goldfinger.

There's also plenty of dumb stuff, and quite a few scenarios where the MC is challenged feel extremely random and fabricated, but I've read of 600 chapters of this, so it's not all bad. Again, if you think the premise interests you and you have enjoyed similar novels, give it a shot and see for yourself. <<less

I enjoyed this more than I expected, given some of the comments and the fact that at first it looked like a stereotypical 'MC being bullied by members of his family' trope that I, for one, am really tired of. It gets better and there are reasons. the MC is the calm analytical sort instead of the usual hot head and yes, there are many chapters where he spends a lot of time grinding, or going through the dungeon in the game first before attempting it irl. He tries to keep in mind that while he had unlimited lives in the game, he only has one in real life. It was refreshing to see a MC who actually understands this from the start.

he does level up fairly quickly but there are others in the college who do so at the same time, so he isn't the only one by any means. There are a few others who are contemporary with him and one even leveled up to epic along the same time, despite their young age (16-17). He is very OP with his skills and beasts though, and that is more evident with some of the events that happen to him outside of school.
there is a moderate amount of face-slapping but not much compared to other cultivation novels; most of the time the MC doesn't care what others think about him as long as he knows what he's doing. He has big enemies gained mostly by association, rather than something he did himself. There's little to no romance (but there are a couple of girls interested) so the MC isn't distracted by his 3rd leg and the story hasn't gone off into bad rom-com or melodrama land. the reason this is only a 3.5 for me is
Spoiler

because of the non-ending that leaves up with tangled plot threads and holes. The MC makes it to the other side but there is no finding out about what happens to the MC, no conclusion and no pay off for me having read all those pages. Its frustrating.

This author also wrote Super Gene. I like Super Gene better. There's similarity between the two,

    • at first, distinction between level is good and defined well
    • later in the story, the level is pretty much blurred
    • author keeps pumping new element that gives new oomph which seems to me like random thing can prevent the goodness owned previously by MC from working
Spoiler

In the end, MC becomes the most powerful in the world, with differents:

    • - Super Gene MC didn't enter the new upper world
    • - Let Me Game in Peace MC enter the new upper world
    • But at the same time, the story ends here, leaving bad aftertaste reading :/

Overall Rating: 4.5/5.0

Before talking about what I like about the novel, I feel like I need to address the cons that seem to be in every negative review of the novel:

Yes, the novel can be repetitive and stale in certain arcs and events. Yes, the author does put in quite a bit of filler chapters. Yes, there are a number of throwaway characters that are not very fleshed out in the novel.

However, despite all of these problems, I'm still very surprised that this novel only has a 3.7 rating (at... more>> the time of writing this review) especially when many other higher ranking novels suffer from the exact same problems described above. Let Me Game in Peace is definitely no masterpiece novel but there are many areas where it is vastly superior to many 4.0-4.5 rated novels on the site. I initially read the novel intending for it to be a "time killer" which I would throw away after a few hundred chapters but I have surprisingly read it all the way to c1815, far longer than many other novels I read even ones that I consider to be excellent. And this can be attributed to a few things that keeps the novel fresh and interesting:

  1. A setting and plot very reminiscent of novels such as Reverend Insanity and Lord of the Mysteries. What I mean by this is that the author is not afraid to slow down the story, describe details, plant foreshadowing, and put in some surprise plot twists. Despite his habit of putting in a few throwaway characters and details, the author is surprisingly diligent in bringing up foreshadowing from previous chapters and pursuing left behind plot points. Many of the characters and details which I assumed were irrelevant were actually brought up in later chapters and given pivotal roles in various arcs. In fact, mysteries, plot points, and foreshadowing that were placed in the first 100 chapters of the novel are still being brought up all the way in c1800 in a way that feels natural and interesting. There are a number of surprising plot twists that I never expected yet they are never out of place or unnatural because of the build-up created by the author. Although it might take some time to reach these plot twists, the author makes sure to drip feed the reader with information and mysteries that keep them curious and wanting more. While some people might say that it takes too long to reach the interesting parts, these are the same people who say RI and LOTM have "too much details" and "aren't exciting enough". However, in my opinion, it is because there is enough build-up and foreshadowing that the climax of each part of the novel is even more exciting and satisfying. I won't say that the novel is as exciting and well-written as RI and LOTM (especially since they are my top 2 novels) but it definitely surpasses many other higher rated novels that are in the same genre.
  2. Despite what many of the other reviews say, I actually quite appreciate the main character. He's calm, analytical, and refrains from taking reckless risks which makes him feel very realistic. At the same time, he's not like other Chinese novel protagonists who are bloodthirsty demons that kill on sight and then pretend to "not be the bad guy" after he slaughters an entire family. He hides his strength for about 80% of the novel but he always shows up at the most pivotal moment and takes risks in order to reap the most benefits. I'm also not afraid to admit that I do enjoy the face-slapping scenes even if I'm not a big fan of the cliché.
  3. A moderately well-constructed power system where it doesn't always feel like there's another power level above the supposed "peak". The protagonist doesn't advance in a breakneck pace and his level-ups are always well spaced from each other. There are a few kinks in the power system that I have problems with but nothing that power systems from other novels do not also suffer from.
Overall, Let Me Game in Peace is not any breakthrough novel that completely breaks all conventions but it is also not just a throwaway novel that people will get bored with after a few hundred chapters. I feel like it's a novel that is underserving of its relatively low rating and can definitely be well-enjoyed even to a general audience. <<less

This is set in a world where dimensional creatures stay in a certain area and there's a chance for them to escape and cause a massacre to the human world. Humans will mine these areas for drops to get companion beasts to give themselves abilities. Our MC, Zhou Wen, will do this on his phone / gaming device instead and just keep re-doing them if he dies.

Our MC Zhou Wen is a homebody who only cares about his gaming to become stronger. He does have a few close friends around... more>> him but has no interest in girls, which is contradictory to a 16-17 year old boy. He's always "chill" at pretty much every situation so there's no great ups and down. The author does a good job of slowly unraveling the world to the readers so that we get to understand how and why these dimensional creatures exist. It's also quite funny to see our MC's interactions with his friends.

The only downside to the novel, and why people gave it low ratings, is that the novel rinses and repeats the grinding element of his game so it becomes very repetitive. There's too much information of how MC tries this plan, fails, tries another plan, and keeps going until he finally succeeds. But apart from this, I still rated this novel highly and hope others will enjoy it as I've had. <<less

5+++ as of the current chapter.

There's no pervy tone. The MC is cautious and smart. Given what's out there, I really appreciate an MC who doesn't prostrate himself in front of a goddess. The novel also has an engaging storyline and characters.

Even better, MC's friend isn't the typical pervy fatty who's only there to be a lackey or for comedic relief. Instead, he's someone I can see growing stronger alongside the MC as the MC builds his team.

In case you didn't notice, this novel is similar to a typical shuangwen, minus the love interests. (Author also wrote Super Gene, a shuangwen where the MC has love interests included. I... kinda didn't like it because of that, though)

It's got the cheats, the fast cultivation, the family drama trope-filled premise which fades mostly within 200 chapters, and the inexplicable fortunate encounters of the main character. The plot seems to revolve around the MC grinding with his cheat, or gaining newer, lesser cheats, in a sort of cycle.

And yet,... more>> I like it. Why?

Spoiler

The MC isn't a weird pervy dude like in a lot of shuangwen, collecting a harem. He also has a more relatable mindset, being hardworking, calm, and focused on his goals. He doesn't randomly kill people for treasure or for no reason, but also doesn't wimp out when he has to. He acts like a decent human being to his friends, cares about them, and even has manners when with strangers, never becoming an arrogant young master. Then again, he can be considered too neutral--I guess this an issue of tastes.

Other than one or two, there doesn't seem to be any archetypal Arrogant Young Master, and his uncles and grandpas didn't even go after the MC afterwards. Although, there was the Arrogant Young Lady who was backed by an organization. But even when they do appear, it's not something that happens every 100 chapters to jumpstart a new plot.

And there's still some other mysteries that the MC hasn't quite solved, like many things regarding his former mentor figures, and even the dimensional zones themselves. As the story goes on, some of these become deeper and gain intricacies.

And the premise and world are fairly fresh, which is of course a plus.

[collapse]

Of course, other than the good parts, there are the bad.

Spoiler

Like Pokemon, the MC collects battle pets-*cough*, I mean, companion beasts. Most companion beasts are unintelligent tools, and he still has his cultivation, but I feel like the use of companion beasts makes it feel like the MC's strength is not his own. Other than his evolvables, they are pretty expendable and rarely reappear after power creep sets in.

And, not breaking out of the norm for most CN junk novels, the MC's interactions with side characters are nothing out of the box. Although, it is nice to see a male MC be just normal friends with a girl for once.

Characters and plot points fade away after a while as well--MC's supposed to be in school for the first few hundred chapters, but you wouldn't know that. In later chapters, his stepbrother is shown every hundred chapters or so in short interludes, while his stepmom and stepsister are only mentioned occasionally. Although, this novel does do a better job reusing plot points and characters than many other CN novels I've read.

The MC's character is rather bland, I guess. He operates mostly on logic, which makes him predictable, and is pretty passive in the story. He doesn't have those special personality traits that mark a well-made main character. Well, he's decent enough for me, I guess.

And a pretty important plot hole: How does gaming improve MC's combat experience? He's not actually moving with his body. It can be partially explained as understanding the movements of the enemy, but that's not the same as actually being there. I just brushed it off as "magic cheat mobile game, whatever" for the sake of enjoyment, but I do wish the author had explained that.

[collapse]

So, while the plot might be cyclic, the story a little bland, and the world not very fleshed out, it doesn't have the big glaring things that generally annoy me when reading these kinds of novels.

I'd say give it a try if you're tired of MCs being pervs, but if you don't like the other CN tropes I mentioned here, you should probably give it a pass.

Note: the translation is well-done (CKTalon typically does his research), but translating any mythology-packed novel is bound to result in errors. I'm 90% sure the 'Octokind' is the Eight Legions from Buddhist cosmology, the same one referred to in the Chinese title of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. <<less

I was just passing by to read the reviews in this site and found this @slieb review. Although I might be disappointed by some reviews, I can understand their thoughts but the moment I read that man's review, I could tell that he is no common person.

Spoiler

Most of the part he wrote about Liz and our MC is bs. Forgive the MC for not being a kind soul who can handle any form of injustice as long as it's done by a cute girl. The next part is for those who are checking out reviews before reading it. I'll explain the whole thing with a neutral tone.

Our MC has a special item, his phone. The problem started when he was doubted (and when I say doubted, I truly mean it) to come across a criminal (which he does) and Liz suspects him. Since there is no conclusive evidence, she cannot directly take him into custody. From there, she goes to extreme measures to force his hand (honey trap and etc).

When she learns that MC's background is strong, she crosses the limit. She takes some of the officers to MC's college and forcefully takes him into custody. Then, he runs away and Liz and the others chase him. Finally, they come to a stalemate and that time, if MC didn't kill the officers, he himself would have been killed.

What annoyed me the most that Liz was still alive (although crippled). But I can understand that if he really killed her, it would create some problems.

That's the short summary of what had happened.

Fellow reviewer clearly wanted some smooth sweet moments with MC and liz. Unfortunately for him, mc's temptation towards lust and woman is only a bit greater than Luffy.

I'm honestly shocked seeing this novel not getting the attention it deserved. This novel is fundamentally different than most other works in this site.

Till date, I have yet to find a repeated trope. Even though the setting and concepts itself are not entirely unique but the vibes and realism potrayed sets it apart. Not to mention, even the comedy is dark gold.

Take this scene at the beginning for instance.

"Lad, it’s a lucky coincidence that we meet other. Why don’t you have a chat with me?” the elder looked at Zhou Wen with his turbid eyes as he spoke with his feeble voice.

“I’m not good at chatting.” Zhou Wen wasn’t declining the elder’s request. He really wasn’t good at chatting.

“It’s fine. Let me ask you a few questions.” The elder smiled, only to break into a coughing fit a moment later.

“Go ahead, ” Zhou Wen said and stood in front of the bench.

He usually only gamed and seldom communicated with people. Therefore, it didn’t seem like a bad thing to have someone willing to chat with him.

Of course, this was under the premise that the elder didn’t ask questions that stumped Zhou Wen.

“Do you like women with big or small breasts?” The elder’s question left Zhou Wen taken aback.

Zhou Wen was still a pure and innocent virg*n who had never been in a relationship before. Furthermore, always being focused on cultivation, he had never considered this problem.

The elder’s question was somewhat odd, but Zhou Wen answered after some serious thought, “Women with smaller breasts.”

The elder was delighted to hear that as he said with a smile, “That’s exactly what I think too. Only women with smaller breasts are beautiful. What’s so nice about big-breasted women? They are no different from cows. Only babies who still suck on their mother’s tit will like cows.”

Although Zhou Wen didn’t agree with the elder, he didn’t think it worth arguing with him. He chose women with smaller breasts because having big breasts made it unsuitable for combat. It would affect one’s sense of balance.

The elder’s complexion seemed a lot better once he broached the topic of women. He continued asking in excitement, “Lad, let me ask you another question. Do you like gentle women who are docile and obedient or women who are shrewd and unreasonable?”

This old man sure is odd. Does he have a screw loose? Who wouldn’t like a docile and obedient woman and instead like an unreasonable shrewd?

Zhou Wen had the intention of answering that he preferred docile women, but he felt that choosing this would only excite the elder even more. There would then be no end to the conversation. Besides, Zhou Wen had no interest in continuing his chat with the elder.

“I like shrewd and unreasonable women, ” Zhou Wen swallowed the words he wanted to say and spoke against his will.

To his surprise, the elder smacked his thigh before Zhou Wen could even finish his sentence. He said in great excitement, “Not bad! Not bad! It’s only when women are shrewd and unreasonable that they are cute and fun. Those docile and obedient women are no different from dead fish. What’s so fun about that? I never expected a young lad like you would have such refined taste in women... ”

The MC keeps rushing into danger to save people who have previously tried to manipulate him, forcing him to reveal skills to his enemies. It feels like he's constantly running around on the whims of various powerful people and somehow manages to evade said powerful people's plans due to his OP pets. This guy has clearly never heard of the idea of hiding his strength and is terrible at keeping secrets.

A decent read if you just want to turn your brain off and read the loop of "visit dungeon IRL,... more>> scan dungeon into phone, beat the dungeon in game, beat the dungeon IRL, upgrade pets/skills, repeat". His plot armour must be a higher grade than anyone in the universe has ever reached because you know he'll overcome all of his opponents ezpz. <<less
