On a certain day when I was 6 years old, I, Leah Flores, suddenly regained memories of my past life while watching the coronation ceremony of the crown prince after escaping from an orphanage.

Is this the world of the manga [You and The White Rose] that I read in my past life…?

Duke William-sama, a character in [You and The White Rose], falls in love with the heroine but struggles to watch his friend, the crown prince, and the heroine fall in love with each other. In the end, he sacrifices himself and dies while protecting the crown prince.

William-sama was my favorite character in my past life. “I want William-sama to be happy.”

With these thoughts, I knocked on the door of the Order of Knights, pretending to be a male.

“She, or rather, “he” will definitely protect William-sama’s well-being with all my might!!”

A nice, short (?) read, definitely scratches all the itch I have for the crossdressing-hiding true identity genres. (Seriously, we need more of these with good execution.) The romance, story flow, writing, and even the way the author set the mood? Amazing. 10/10 would read again if it's adapted to manga, and watch if adapted to anime.

I would give this novel a three stars, but because of the wonderful translation quality, it was pushed up to four.

Since this is my first time reading a Japanese novel all the way through, I’m not sure if any of my criticisms are standard or not. Either way, I’ll start with what I enjoyed.

While the plot was simple, it was enjoyable enough. A girl who got reincarnated in a work of fiction and doing her best to change some particular event. Normally with this trope the protagonist becomes a character... more>> that is fated to die and therefore wants to change that, but with this, Leah is born as a completely unrelated character to the plot, and she works to involve herself into the story to save another person’s life. I think it’s a nice motivation, and later on she does elaborate on why she is so desperate to save William, and her motivation makes sense.

Now onto my criticisms. First, the author always tells you exactly what is happening. There is no need for the reader to think more about anything, because every event is exactly as it is shown. The pacing is very strange as well. It’s very fast, moving through each plot point quickly with a few short chapters, then quite literally jumping into the next.

Spoiler

The same happens with the ending as well! After Leah regains her consciousness and she and William finally confirm their mutual love, I fully expected for there to be some elaboration on their new relationship, or even some scenes of how Leah dealt with her gender being revealed and it’s consequences, maybe a proper resolution to this plot point that has been hanging over the whole story. But no!! Neither of those things happen!! We are given a very short recount of how she gets to keep being a knight, and their relationship jumps straight from friends-and-employer-and-employee to getting married?! That’s way way too fast! Yes they had been together for many years (but with how the story is structured it really doesn’t feel like it), they know each other well enough to move through their relationship quickly. But that’s just way way too fast. Doesn’t help that they’re both still teenagers, which just makes it uncomfortable.

[collapse]

Overall, this novel is short and average. Nothing particularly engaging, just something to pass the time.

Regardless of the novel itself though, the translators, Awebstories, did a wonderful job. Everything read smoothly and there wasn’t any errors that I spotted. I’d highly recommend reading some of their other translations. <<less
