This is the story of Phoenix Wisdom King and a Grand Demon just awakened from Hell.

***

On an ancient battlefield, two armies stood in a stalemate. On one side were the Arhats, Gods, and Buddhas from the Heavenly Realm. On the other side were the monsters and demons from the Blood Sea of the Hell Realm.

The personification of that Grand Demon leaped forward, holding a long sword across his chest. He flew across the battlefield, brazenly cutting in half eleven Phoenix Bone Arrows, each of which was enough to destroy the world.

Then, he arrived in front of Phoenix Wisdom King, standing high above the masses:

“Your Highness, please don’t move—”

“I didn’t come to wage war. I came to propose to you.”

Phoenix was the Buddha’s inescapable Tribulation for thirty-thousand years, whereas Zhou Hui was Phoenix’s redemption that could free him from the fate of his eternal life.

After hundreds of thousands of years of endless light and shadow, this handsome yet devilish man finally emerged from Hell—

To bring Phoenix Wisdom King away from the transcendent Buddhist Kingdom and the boundless Lotus Sea.

“Let me follow you to that world. For you, I’ll be invincible forever—”

You’re my shore after swimming across hundreds of miles of water. You’re my destination after traveling through thousands of miles of land.

This is from the translator of the novel. Don't be scared by the contrast between the first chapter and the synopsis! No! You didn't open up the wrong book! This book is so good! Give it a try!

Plot wise: The main stage is set in modern world, but the relationship between MC and ML has spanned for over thousands of years. The story starts with them being a "Divorced" couple, and ML desperately trying to gain his wife back as their past is gradually revealed to us. I don't want... more>> to spoil too much since I think the way that the author reveals everything is very interesting. And it's happy ending.

Characters: I LOVE these two characters and their relationship is very touching. I remember crying my eyes out while reading it. Both MC and ML are very devouted to each other, willing to give their life for each other's sake. Chu He (Phoenix) is very taciturn and doesn't really express himself. He tends to hold everything to himself, which led to some of Zhou Hui (ML) 's frustration. Where as Zhou Hui, born as a Great Demon in the Blood Sea, there is a fierce and beastlike nature in him that's just part of who he is. Both characters are not perfect, but the effort and sacrifice they made for each other over such a long period of time is just touching.

The author's writing is very good, one of the best in my opinion. The modern section is very light heartrd and full of hilarious moments, where as the flashbacks are written with a very distant and almost otherworldly touch. Sadly, my bad writing won't be able to bring her words to their full extent. But I'll try my best.

Give it a try! A very beautiful love story. Wrote it on my phone so typos are expected. <<less

Thought it was a historical romance based on the description... as I read through the chapters, it's actually a modern cultivation novel! It has demons, animals that cultivate into humans, and stuff. In the modern world. ?

i like this author's style. the jokes are fresh, even in middle of serious times. i've laughed hard several times gdi. the characters are just dope. they make me speechless coz their interactions... can be considered hilarious. also as in most of her works, the pace is great. the battle is intense, and the tension is high. you can't help to read more and more. welp, I read this till... more>> late nights lmao. but there's still touching moments, and pretty deep to boot.

I'm giving this 5 glorious stars

So much complexity

I wouldn't lie I hated the phoenix from time to time, I know he did what he did for the right reasons but I just wished he told the ML (Zhou Hui) about why he keeps leaving him for that bastard (you know the guy)

... more>> Our MC is just too good always attracting bees and the likes, my heart broke for our cheap gong all he wanted was a daughter 😂😂

The book is just a beautiful piece, and you would not regret reading it, the first few chapters confused us all don't worry the confusion doubles 😂😂 <<less

The story is a fantasy set in modern times with a LOT of elements from Buddhism (Even as a Buddhist I have a hard time following sometimes lmao). MC is a phoenix who was very powerful but he fell from his grace and now lives among humans. ML is a powerful demon from hell. The story takes off after their break-up/divorce. They've got 2 kids together (Not exactly "Mpreg" because MC is a bird so more like egg babies and they're fully grown by the start of the novel.)

The... more>> plot is very unique and complex. The story shifts between the present and the past, retelling MC and ML's journey as a couple and family and how their fallout happens. In the beginning, I was seriously rooting for MC and ML to get back together. I was excited to see how they'll mend their broken relationship since the cause of it is something that happened in the past that can't be changed now. But somewhere along the line, I started to dislike the nature of their relationship as it starts to gravitate toward being rather toxic and unhealthy.

(10-page essay rant incoming, bear with me)

Spoiler

ML really has that standard toxic men mindset. (He is a walking red flag) Throughout the novel, he uses 'rape' or 'gangr*pe' as a joke so casually. There is a r*pe/non-con scene between the main couple. Even ML is aware he r*ped MC out of sheer anger but he never got any repercussions and neither did MC ever fault him for what he did or even bring it up. (Dude didn't even apologize ONCE). At one point, he also confines MC for his "safety" against MC's will.

I feel like the imbalance in their relationship is what throws me off. ML is lowkey manipulative. He knows MC has abandonment issues. He even knows that ever since MC agrees to marry him, he's become MC's entire world. He knows that despite the calm and cold façade MC puts up, deep down he's just a broken and fragile little birdie yet continues to treat him like shit. His "love" is something more akin to an unhealthy obsession.

One of the scenes that really pissed me off is when MC is about to give his all and sacrifice himself, he asks ML that 'if he's gone, will ML be waiting for him to return' (He's a phoenix so he can basically be reborn at any time). And for some reason, ML replies that if MC is gone then he won't be waiting for/wanting him anymore. WTF??? WHAT WAS THE REASON?? Then later when MC is for real dying he begs MC not to leave and confesses that what he said back then was a lie, but y'know what... that lie has been stuck in MC's mind and has been haunting him so badly because he truly believed he's yet again abandoned by the person he loves.

Apart from being a shitty partner, ML is also an absolute wreck of a father. So the story goes that a prophecy is told that MC will give birth to 2 sons who will be his doom. And he does indeed have 2 sons (with ML) but despite the prophecy, he loves them very much. That is until the first son starts going bat-sh*t crazy and eventually leads to every catastrophe as foretold.

You will realize at the end that this whole novel can be summed up as "Dysfunctional family doesn't know how to communicate for sh*t and the Oedipus complex". So MC's inner demon is the fact that he couldn't protect his son from the divine punishment, but he puts the blame on his husband for not trying to protect him and even stopping MC from doing it. In the end, this is justified by MC's "epiphany" that no child should bear the parents' feelings, and neither should the parents sacrifice all they have for their child... which, is a fair point I do agree with myself. However, MC says that ML realized this long ago so that's why he sort of gave up trying to save his son. I honestly rolled my eyes at this cause, yes true, you don't need to sacrifice all for your kids but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do the bare minimum as a parent.

I feel like ML never wants kids specifically because he fears the prophecy. And when his kids were born, he recognized the feeling of jealousy and envy he feels because his lover's attention is taken away from him. Strangely enough, both he and his kid were jealous of each other. (What in the Freudian theory is this). There was not a scene where ML's love for his children was shown. When his first kid grew up to be violent and consumed by envy and jealousy, he recognized that he inherited such a tendency from him, a demon. Yet he didn't do shit. Maybe things would've been a little different if you had acted like a father and given parental love to your child for once?? Ever thought of that? Their logic was so flawed. Kid treated like sh*t at home and neglected by father is now violent? Oh no... welp guess we're giving up on this one now. 🤦‍♀️

And we know for a fact, fate can be changed. Just like how it was changed when MC saved ML's life. I feel like they didn't even try as a parent, especially considering the power and position they had back then. I honestly feel bad for the kids, especially the second son. He was a good boy (as good as he can be with such parents in a dysfunctional family). It broke my heart when we learn all he's ever wanted was just a normal family time where they can hang out without attempting to slit each other's throats. I can come to terms with Zhou Hui not being able to mend his relationship with Muohe but what reasons did he even have to not get along with Jialouluo (Apart from the s*upid 'he's basically discounted me' bullcrap).

[collapse]

You don't need redemption to justify your actions but when you were such an as*hole who got away with no consequences I can't help but get pissed off by this character. He's one of the most shallow characters I've come across. He's basically 'oh no wife gone, yas wife back, I f*ck wife, life good, f*ck everything else'.

Zhou Hui is a self-centered manipulative creep and Chu He is a miserable pretty flower who lacks communication skills. They're literally a match made in hell (haha ironic). It's like a soap opera with a stereotypical dysfunctional family next door except that family is the main cast. It's such a pain going through each page. I've seriously never been this enraged by a novel LMAO then I realized why I was so angry and this is the reason why I'll give this novel 3 stars.

It's because it realistically represents stuff that happens in real life. Normally in danmei novels we often have characters that are over-the-top (as in either too saintly or too evil). But the situation of the main cp in this novel is something that you can easily find around you. A broken marriage after having children. A negligent father who absolutely doesn't want anything to do with his kids and only tolerates them because he wants to bang the mom. A male partner who might or might not have manipulated you but you still love him and stay with him anyway. It all cl**ked in my head. Maybe this hit too close to home.

Do I still dislike this novel and the ML? Absolutely. Not to mention the absolute creep he was being after MC gets reborn and turns into a body of a 13-15 yr old. But I'm mostly angered by the fact that ML never reaps what he sows. Am I supposed to feel like all can be forgiven just cause MC really craves for ML and will take anything he's given? Oh now they're reunited and he's happy. Everything in the past? Haha let's just forget that. Sure. I can definitely let that slide but the dissatisfaction I got after forcing myself to finish this story is unmeasurable.

Oh, and another thing. There's an underage side couple in this story and there's a dubcon scene with them. Whoo who would've thought. Personally, I don't sense the chemistry between these two (neither do I with the main CP but whatever) but I was surprised when they actually did the deed like a chapter after the gong tells himself it's wrong to lust after someone who's barely 18 lmao people in this novel just cannot keep it in their pants. <<less

It’s a really interesting novel but I feel that the development is just too fast, I have a hard time digesting all the facts and all what’s happening so I’m stopping reading for now.

Like the other reviews, yes the first few chapters are really confusing you’d be like — what? What is happening?!

That’s because there are a lot of facts/things that’s bombarded in the first few chapters but it’s kinda understandable as the novel sets off with everyone already knowing each other and the novel is about their past.

It’s just... more>> that the novel seems too fast paced like this and that is going on with a lot of characters involved and I just can’t keep up at the moment, maybe I’ll read this when I have more time to read. Anyway, still a good read to try! <<less

ML and MC are really out of this world :0

Especially ML. Zhou Hui is in a class of his own. A concoction of shamelessness, couldn't care less of others, joker, devil may care, hell spawn, all mixed into one with generous dosage of being an official 'wife' to his Phoenix. Not forgetting the bits of aggression, possessiveness, jealousy that's just part of his being as a Demon. The plot line is unique, never chanced upon such great mixture in my consumption of danmei as of yet. Kudos to the translator because each chapter is long and it definitely took a while to churn out chap by chap!

Spoiler below for me to note when the translations start again
Spoiler

As of chap 45, awaiting the new possible CP pairing Wu x Maha? And also more scenes of Garuda! (The only sane god in this crazy family)

Up to here, the novel has described how this family dynamics came to be. How thousand of years have led to this broken relationship between the children and their parents. Uncontrollable. Undeniable. Sigh.

Awaiting the fluff parts to start soon

I highly appreciated this novel. It was a great reading.

The plot is unique, interesting to follow along. The twists are unpredictable, the ending is SUPER sweet.

The main couple was strange at first (especially that overly possesive ml's attitude) , but it smooths later and becomes enjoyable. Though I should say the Ml's behavior in each of the authors novels is hilarious and again, unique.

The side characters are not overly dominating the plot, accurately playing it's filling role - I always find it boring to read when side stories have... more>> too many chapters.

Totally recommend this novel, it is a gem in many aspects. <<less
