This sense of distance――

It’s sad and frustrating.

Ryoma Shiba, a University student who lacks money, searches for a part-time job with a high hourly wage. On the other hand, Himeno Kashiwagi is a girl who proclaims she has no interest in love but wants a boyfriend.

At the same time, they both hear about “Lover agent” from their friends and immediately register, unexpectedly scheduling a date with one another.

On the day of their first meeting, they were both nervous, but despite that, they held hands and drank tapioca, passing the time as a couple would.

In the midst of all this, Himeno’s friend discovers them, and the situation gets awkward. When Himeno had trouble explaining, Ryoma lies, saying they were “dating”.

Ryoma acts as a real boyfriend, making Himeno’s heart pound…

This is a real love story that begins with a rental relationship.

Rent-a-girlfriend? Now we got rent-a-boyfriend too. However:

- No sloppy, wimpy MC. Dude is a decent productive human being who turns his life around. The girl is thirsty but able to hold her thirst in check.

- No harem. (Seems like, hopefully no love triangles too)

Just 2 prologues in so can't say much. Pretty good start so hopefully a decent fluffy story with no frustrating factors in it.

Update: Nevermind the second heroine just appeared

Pretty interesting rom-com with a protagonist that's not the usual depressive, beta, average-joe kinda dude. The heroines are also alright.

Typical wish-fulfillment novel but with actual stakes for the MC and the main heroine

That said, the translator –I assume– buys these light novels and translates them for our entertainment with a consistent upload frequency which immediately puts him in the top tier of fan translators. Still I can't say I've been really enjoying this novel as it seems like it needs a lot of editing. It's not awful, but not exactly... more>> good, either. It is what it is, that's google sensei. If you don't care about grammar as long as it looks like English then you're gonna be fine. <<less

A refreshing story about a guy who wants to earn money and getting into the business of rent-a-boyfriend.

Different from the majority of romcom which are very lacking in romance and comedy and follows the same routine, this one in my opinion is worth your time. Our protagonist doesn't have some sort of dark past that feeds on his insecurity or something. No, he's a normal guy wanting to ease the burden on his sister and made a way just to do that. He has the common sense and actual smarts... more>> a person should have, though his boyfriend persona falls on the typical handsome guy trope. He also has character so that already makes him more notable than the average romcom leads.

The females involved has their own charms but also suffer from the typical heroine treatment and events expected from these kind of works. As of now there's room for more development as there's only 1 volume available for read.

Overall a solid grade for a romcom with a similar setting from rent-a-girlfriend, only without the annoying guy. <<less

I like it alot. Just that sometimes it can be infuriating to tl due to the way the author's worded it. Anyway, as you can see, there's a big gap in the release, or stop I should say. Well, anyway, I'll resume the tl of it soon and finish it, most preferably in august 2022, so dw. Tl in v1 may not be so fabulous, so I'll rework it given that I'm much better at Japanese than before (since this was the first novel I worked on). Moving on, as... more>> for my review on this novel, rental boyfriends/girlfriends are a very hot topic, esp since the emergence of rental girlfriend (Cringe stuff lol, no offense tho, if u don't think so then that's fine.) Ryoma Shiba, a rental boyfriend who works hard to earn money so that he can help his sister Kaya with financial issues, given that she helps fund his college fee. Why not his parents you may ask? Well, I'm sure you can figure that out yourself. Being a rental boyfriend, he has to adhere to certain rules, and so on. However, unlike the MC from rental girlfriend, this MC is composed, smart, and uses his brain. He isn't easily bribed, and sometimes he acts like he's bribed, only to give the money back to said person at the end. An example of this would be one of the heroines in the story, namely Aira. Aira's a girl who has lots of money, due to her being under a rich family. However, being rich doesn't always mean happiness. Her parents are always out on work, and they never seem to pay any attention to her. Due to this, Aira tends to be rather clingy when she meets someone, especially Ryoma. At one point, she gave Ryoma lots of money so that he could hang out with her (to which he initially refused), and in the end, accepted it and sneakily returned it to her when their date was over. This is the kind of MC I like honestly. And boy in v3 it gets even better. So yeah. Also, I wont talk abt the other heroines yet, but personally my favourite is Himeno <<less

This was really enjoyable to read. The MC doesn't flinch at physical contact with a woman, and hes actually kind of a chad whenever he interacts with other girls. He's also really kind and mature and I have never once been disappointed in him, he's not badass but he's managed to check all my "good MC tickboxes", so the MC is a huge plus. Furthermore, the fMC's are super cute! So far there are two of them, and they're both so cute and have amazing personalities, I really don't want... more>> either of them to lose (ahhh), but seriously, their interactions with MC are so cute and fluffy, and their personalities match really well with the MC, which creates a lot of entertaining and enjoyable interactions. I really recommend reading this, it's just an overall great novel, and I can't point out any visible flaws <<less

So far this novel did what Rental Girlfriend couldn't and it is good and relaxing.

But apparently when I checked with the WN version, it looks like the LN and WN are completely different since the LN are finished with 3 volumes and WN is still ongoing.

For instance
Spoiler

A new character was introduced in the WN which LN don't have. And also scenes like Himeno being sexually aroused

A breath of fresh air when compared to other novels. MC ain't a wimp, he ain't a pe*vert. Heck he's the literal opposite of rental girlfriend's MC lmao. Disregarding the way the author writes things somewhat, the characters are all neatly fleshed out. Each of them has their own unique personality which I think you'll come to like. The shy Himeno but underneath a strong person who wants to achieve something in her manga writing. Aira, the extroverted Kouhai, strong on the outside, but weak on the inside, wants familial... more>> love (parents work, only gives her money once in a while that's it), so she hired the MC to be his 'tentative' brother with cash (tho he returns it later cause he didn't find being her 'tentative' brother something that needs to be paid by money). Then we have Hazuki, top notch rich women whatever you call it, smart women, likes to play around with MC, and other stuff but her arc only extends till v2 so ye, need wait for more chaps to see what happens in the end. Overall, a solid novel 5/5. Can't wait for the ending. <<less

Great casual read, no heavy drama beyond the usual heroines feeling lonely, although based on the premise it's expected, no reason to rent a boyfriend otherwise

Interactions are kept natural and is mainly sweet fluff, but not forced and this time there's no annoying trope male/female friend combo who kept egging on the hero to confess or whatever. It's frustrating to see a dense protagonist and having a bunch of filler "you're an idiot" and "just date already" dialogues. Thankfully this doesn't have those

This is a good story. It's a rom com that features a rental boyfriend MC. Dont even think hes anywhere close to the MC of Rent a girlfriend. If I could post a meme here I would post the we are not the same meme. Anyway Chad MC, probably 4 love interests. I actually found this earlier but I wssnt that intrested but its a banger now that I read it properly.
Spoiler

Read finished the raw and I have to say, what a great read. Volume 3 was a blast. Even though I was a little confused by the introduction of Aira and Hazuki, in volume 3, Ryoma finally comes to a decision in his heart and decides not to waste any time by spending more time and confessing to her (wont say who but I think you know). Of course he understands that spending more time with the other girls is like a play on their feelings, so you'll see how... more>> he lets them down. I won't say any more than this as the volume still getting tled but I hope it'll be quick cause hot damn. Also poggies for the ending <<less

I didn't really expect much at first, but damn did it exceed expectations. The Mc's a chad, he's not like your typical romance MCs as well, especially Kazuya (Lmao, considering the concept of the novel/manga is similar, I decided to compare them). When bad things do happen, he doesn't vent his anger out like some MCs I see or act a little wonky, instead, he takes a mature approach toward it, heck he even offers some great advice. Well, there's a lot more I can say but you can find... more>> out yourself. Anyway now onto the heroines, they're all great, though they do suffer from some heroine treatment, they have other qualities that more than make up for it. Their personalities especially, man is good.

Overall, a great romcom, something of a fresh air nowadays with all the recent rom coms coming out, its 1 that stands out for sure, a hidden gem or sorts, looking forward to the ending! <<less

I really wanted to like this story, I truly did. The first volume had a lot going for it at first, but as it went on I could kind of feel it losing steam almost physically.

First, the good things about this novel (to me at least) :

  • the main character is a great guy all around. Other reviews here point this out as well and contrast him greatly with the insectoid protagonist of Rent-a-Girlfriend, but it really can't be stated enough. He's reasonably self confident and carries himself maturely, taking decisive action when the need arises.
  • The other characters are great in and of themselves.
Now for negative things and spoiler territory. You might have noticed I only rated this 2 stars. I might just have very high standards, but it lost a... more>> star for betraying my expectations and turning a non harem story into a harem story. I purposely filter out harems because I dislike reading men's romantic power fantasies of having lots of women fawn all over them, and I was initially intrigued when this began, as it didn't seem like it would veer into this territory.

Spoiler

I was even willing to give the story the benefit of the doubt when Aira was introduced. A love triangle is, yes, a bit overplayed but not quite a harem. But then a third love interest is introduced and I could already see where the sun was shining at that point and lost interest immediately.

I think I would almost have been willing to give this story another shot even then, though, if not for what I think is, in retrospect, not very good story pacing. I'm assuming Himeno is meant to be the main love interest, but after the initial two or so chapters, she barely appears in the story anymore. I think the entire first volume should have just been about Aira since the author clearly likes writing about her much more. The story starts to feel very blurry after Aira shows up, like a train getting derailed, unfocused, it feels sloppier as it continues on.

[collapse]

I really did want to enjoy this story. Plenty of others who reviewed this clearly enjoy it. Thinking about this as "Rent-a-Girlfriend but actually good" might make this look better than it is because anything looks better when compared to Rent-a-Girlfriend. But taking the story on its own merits, it offers a good protagonist and well-written characters overall, while still falling into boring harem tropes, lack of focus, and pacing that alternates between glacial and the speed of light. <<less
