The thing that irks me in this novel is how the author has no knowledge of blacksmithing.

Hell, considering that he makes molds and casts iron with a regular furnace, I don't think he even bothered to make a quick search on the topic to know how melting iron is quite a task, and how the hammering was made to remove slag impurities or shape it in lower temperatures. Or how this wrought iron produced in old bloomeries had to be mixed with cast iron in another furnace to make actual... more>> steel. How the tempering is necessary to make the steel harder. I could go on and on...

If it all boiled down to 'magic' it would be fine, but the Author tries to explain the process in a non-magical way and it's painful to read, specially when said blades are so incredibly stronger than regular ones 'because cheat' but the way of making is s*upid and wrong.

The Author should've just omitted the smithing part like other novels with the premise usually do, make some reseach before writing, or create an unique fantasy way of smithing (prefered). Not this mumbled mess poorly mashed out together.

Aside from that things are too standard: MC with cheat, girls keep appearing and flocking to him by chance, little challenge, plot or character progression etc etc.

But it's a chill novel and it is advertised as slow life, so I won't say is completely bad. I'd read it if the knowledge of smithing was less dumb. <<less

I never thought I'd say this about a novel, but the harem made this absolutely terrible.

The girls themselves are fine and the protagonist is fine, I don't particularly mind how they live with him without anyone trying to advance the relationship further than "warmly watching over him as he pursues his hobbies".

What I mind is how otherwise intelligent people who are aware that he's the best blacksmith in the country, maybe even the world, request him to go into dangerous situations. He may be able to defend himself, but in... more>> the arcs where new heroines join the household after the catgirl and dwarf, he's forcibly thrust into a place he doesn't particularly want to be, doing something he's not interested in or experienced in, and his presence there doesn't particularly affect the success or failure of the mission, just so he can be there to protect a heroine and have the people in charge go "oh, she should live at your place for a while" to him. The lord's sister was still okay, and the monster-fighting expedition at least started off reasonably, but

Spoiler

who in their right mind would request a legendary blacksmith to go on a spy mission into an enemy country right before a revolution? And how it ended, literally anyone could have taken his place and it would have worked just as well. And then the mess with the imperial princess, where the whole thing about "I'll only make top quality weapons for people who come meet me so I know my weapons aren't in the wrong hands"? Yeah, that gets thrown out the window and he agrees to make not one, but four top quality weapons, without even knowing the name of the person getting them, when he really didn't need to agree.

[collapse]

And the reason for these things? Only to add women to the harem. Which, even though in theory the women like him, they're more like... high school club members? With him as the club advisor? Yeah, that's how the relationship feels. It's just not worth having the author drop everyone's IQ by 100 or so just to force them on the protagonist, that's for sure. <<less

Take a filler and stretch it to the size of a few volumes, that's it!

There is no romance despite having girls and harem tag.

There is no plot, there are no jokes, there are no nothing.

Simply a guy hitting the metal and girls are watching him.

This is the real "slow-life" story, not like those wish fulfilment type of stories with "slow life" in the title but it's actually the overpowered, "MC hides his power", shows off every chance he gets, trope.

One reviewer is right that this is really like living in the medieval ages, apart from MC's strength and godly blacksmithing cheat, but he lives a hard, diligent, heartwarming life.

However, while slow moving, events do happen once in a while in the latter chapters, nothing big, but they make it more interesting and ultimately ends... more>> in

MC getting another harem member

[collapse]

My only complaint about this story is the ROMANCE TAG should be removed (MC is very sexless), and while the characters around MC are unique and interesting, I wish the MC had a deeper relationship with his harem.

(spoiler about harem)

Spoiler

He lives with 6 women by ch407 and they joined him through interesting events but after that he calls them 'family' and has no intention of marrying them ("yet"? Maybe by chapter 1000).

While generally inoffensive as jp web novels go (little to no mention of breast size or eternally at fault MC which is fantastic for a harem novel), it really has a LOT of filler. Now I understand that this is a slice of life, and the filler is the point, but there are a lot of chapters that don't develop character, plot, setting or action. Now not moving these elements forward is not the end of the world if was not for the fact that in its place we have... more>> blacksmithing scenes which follow identical prose, For instance:

1. MC needs to do some blacksmithing task

2. MC bangs out sheet metal, which as he says every time his cheat makes it easy.

3. MC shapes into sword, dagger or theme weapon (halberd spear) for the current chapters, which as he says every time his cheat makes it easy.

4. MC does the final shaping of the sword (often at this point we have moved onto another chapter), which as he says every time his cheat makes it easy.

5. MC will sharpen the sword (sometimes if we are lucky the author will remember that weapons need tempering and quenching), which as he says every time his cheat makes it easy (Picking up on a theme?).

6. MC will then transport the weapons to his local dealer with assortment of wafuis. (sometimes this is a whole chapter in itself).

7. MC will greet/mention the gate guard and if he knows them (why am I mentioning this part, because apparently it is important enough to the author for him to do it every time).

8. MC will sell weapons and make requests/ seek updates on requests and then go home (the going home is often a chapter as well)

9. Repeat for more chapters.

Now this example is fine for background plot that the regular story can sit on... except this IS the plot, and the background plot is the VERY infrequent happenings of the wider world.

Please do not get me wrong it is not totally bad it’s just very tedious and takes a long time to pay things off. It’s a lot of empty calories and while it works if you binge 50 chapters together it makes for painful reading on a chapter-by-chapter release schedule.

Much like the novel itself it makes for good filler for when you don’t have anything else to read. <<less

This is a slow, go at your pace MC, slice of life novel. When I say slow, I mean sloooooow. The teaser chapter about future developments will probably require 2000 chapters to get there. I mean, we've got whole chapters dedicated to building a bed, so this is an idea of what you'll be getting into if you want to read this. This is the kind of novel you're better off reading all the available chapters in one go and then forgetting about it for several months to a year... more>> given the frequency of translation and the pace of the story unfolding. It's not terrible writing, but it's like watching a farmer doing his daily chores in real time. I think the author is trying to set a new record on how mundane a slice of life chapter can be. <<less

The MC starts to become a pain. Always thrust into stuff that he should not be as a blacksmith and he worries to damn much about his "fate" (carbon footprint type) is in that world, he ads to the "harem" but does nothing to progress

.. It just becomes s*upid.

It's a true slow life novel. MC is super strong, but rarely gets a chance to use it. It follows the slow but hard life of our MC and an expanding crew of interesting female side characters. As of chapter 47 there's no real progress on the romance front, but there are the beginnings of romantic feelings.

It's SLOW, like several chapters building a bed slow. But if you enjoy slow life novels, this is a warm and relaxing one.

Translation is fantastic quality too. The translation speed isn't a thousand chapters... more>> a day as I wish it was, but the translator is very active!

As for other reviews, yes the blacksmithing isn't 100% perfectly accurate. The author has clearly done some research given that there are parts that are accurate, though. But if you want to learn how to smith you should watch YouTube tutorials or read a book, or take a class, don't read a fictional novel... Smithing isn't a simple thing, and it's by no means easy to learn or research, it's unrealistic to expect the author of a WN to take weeks and months to learn period-accurate smithing techniques. HOWEVER, I couldn't agree more with your point about his 'high tier' weapons. I can't fathom why the author decided that because he smacked it randomly it became s*upidly strong. Iron/Steel is only so strong, there are limits to the material's strength, instead of trying to make it some physical skill, it'd make much more sense to make it something magical. It gets annoying to read 'cheat' this and 'cheat' that a hundred times!

As for gegehehe8686's review, I don't even know. Just don't bother with that review... In that chapter there's a Dwarf who wants to become MC's disciple. MC ends up saying yes, he's not "forced" into it, it's not a "beta" move. He says yes because he feels like it, it's a slow life, his second life, and he's just chilling. As for her not being useful, it's a Dwarf, and he's a blacksmith. What do you mean she's useless?... <<less

Honestly it's really refreshing for me how NOTHING happens in the entire series lol. Author is kinda talented, in a way that they can write countless pages saying absolutely nothing. I mean I wouldn't be able to.

It's not not even romance, much to my pleasure (I hate harem)

But oh well I really don't plan to drop it. It's just a slice of life, in which MC actually DOES live a slow life. You can just seat back & skim =)))

Here's.. My thing.

I liked this novel, for a while there. It was slow, but seemed to move. There were flaws, sure. Not in the least the nonsensical way the author tries to describe smithing with no knowledge.

I've read a lot of novels on this site though, so if it was that and everything else was good, I honestly wouldn't have even bothered to leave a review. Just liked and moved on.

Lately, though.. It feels like there's no progress, or little. There's a lot written, but little truly said. Like a... more>> wheel turning in the mud. Which is a shame, because for a long while there it was actually a fun story. Maybe I'll just wait for a few dozen chapters to come out at once and skim until something happens, but until then, I think I'll pause my reading here.

Thank you to the translator (s) who worked on this, though. Your work is honestly really good in my opinion, and you have my thanks. <<less

A weird mix of your usual isekai with cheats and half assed smithing. While the author seemed to have more knowledge of blacksmithing than most isekai readers out there, unfortunately he's just another (sorry for my words no offense intended to you guys) japanese writer with all the glorified inferiority complex and all the ignorance of the world.

.... it's weird that in this era of open information people just don't research enough, this is a sad example of how not to half ass your knowledge.

The story is just acceptable with... more>> it labeled as a slow life isekai, nothing much happens. Not even combat with isekai style rpg monsters. It's really a slow novel. That alone is ok but given that author is somewhat giving heavy emphasis on (poor) blacksmithing with inadequate knowledge... It's just painful. Also painful when there are some character developments (this too is lacking btw) but no romance whatsoever in his harem, not even a hint??? Not that I hope for that kind of development but for real tho this author makes me want to backseat so bad

Anyways. Slow life isekai, very slow indeed. If you like this kind of novel then you may get some enjoyment out of these short chapters. Otherwise steer clear <<less

He is "forging" cast iron words. That should tell you everything.

I thought, maybe he is using a magical furnace to melt and cast actual steel. Nope, a few chapters later he explicitly states that they are made of cast iron. The thing that would shatter on the first hit. Nevermind the fact that at this tech level, there is no way you are finishing a dozen swords per day. Although I suppose if you are making cast iron swords, might as well. (Incidentally, melting iron is also not a thing... more>> you can reasonably do like this... hence, forging...)

The final nail in the coffin was the later translations that just threw it into an MTL and published it without any fixing. Kinda takes any possible fun out of it when you have to re-translate it as you read.

t gets an extra star, just because the MC is not spreading japanese stuff and getting irrationally worshipped for it. <<less

Sadly, something seems to have happened to Yume Neiji. None of the stories they were translating, and also their twitter, hasn't been updated in a year. Here's hoping that they're ok and just taking a long hiatus. :-) No complaints with the translation, all chapters are done most excellently. The story is slow moving, a slice of life if you like, with nice characters. Very enjoyable if you like that sort of thing.

Currently the top comment mentions the problem of lack of blacksmithing knowledge from the author. And yes I... more>> agree. Taking iron ore and turning it into steel plate isn't as easy and quick as you think. All of the issues could be fixed by using magic at various stages though. But it's something I can over look as it's a web novel and not a Pulitzer Prize winning published book. :D <<less

A pleasant, light-hearted, easy-to-read slice of life story of an OP isekai'd MC and his family.

The tone feels drier than Death March and there's less big scale adventure for now (as of chapter 145) ; not as cute as Isekai Yururi Kikou. There's a bit of feeling like the classic Walden but set in an otherworld. Overall, I enjoy it nearly as much.

There's a harem of exotic women gathering around the MC now. Their backgrounds are reasonably fleshed out for side characters, enough to keep them from being flat, but... more>> short of a full biography. Personalities feel a bit generic, though that might be a translation artifact removing verbal tics and speaking styles from their speech. They aren't bland, though, with each one having their own personal interests and specialties. They're not trophies or mascots; everyone of them working for their upkeep together with the MC.

The women like him; romantically for most of them. But none of them have directly said so to the MC, who remains oblivious to their romantic feelings even in his internal monologues. This is likely because the MC was in his 40s, then transmigrated into a 30 y.o. Body while the women look in their late teens or early 20s.

There's a bit of world building, but it's slow because the MC is based inside a dangerous forest and doesn't really travel around much.

Author's early descriptions of the MC's smithing techniques feel like they aren't quite right. Though I feel that some are problems with the translation. MC is mainly using a smithing technique where he casts steel into molds and then tempers them. It's definitely not the more widely known forging through folding and hammering style. Later on, there's also some explicit handwaving using his cheats and magic. <<less

I think 2 stars is on the more generous side of what I think about this story. The characters are all completely boring. The blacksmithing is written terribly. And nothing interesting has happened once so far. I know I'm technically still in the beginning of the story, but from what I've seen, I'm certain I won't find any enjoyment in this story.

There is nothing noteworthy of any of the characters so far. Every important character so far is a girl. The author doesn't seem to know anything about blacksmithing, which... more>> would be somewhat fine if the book mainly focused on the gathering process instead of the creation process. It focuses on neither. It's just another generic, forgettable story where the only purpose of the plot is to give a pathetically weak excuse as to why women want to live with him.

It can't even be considered a guilty pleasure because none of the characters have personalities. Overall the story is sad and pathetic. <<less

MC allows dwarf to easily and casually force the MC to accept dwarf as disciple. He has no use for a disciple. She probably can't help him do anything and considering most of his ability is from his cheat, I seriously wonder if he can teach her anything.

while its one of the more enjoyable slow life wn's, I do recommend reading this,

pros: harem, author does stretch how the MC gets/adds to harem inserting all/most races and also pet elements, its building first slow life, its not always crafting first but..

cons: author avoids advancing love interest, 60's/70's style self sufficent cult stlye farm/town setting is awful overall, the unwillingness of MC to upgrade properly to accomedate harem with tape and glue updgrades living wise with self sufficent reasons etc, while taking over 700? chpts to finally insert... more>> self sufficent date/admit feelings but still no progress with said harem...

its still good for slow life novel especially since theres (as of writing) no sm jp author checklist inserted into main storyline making it more ejoyable <<less

Its ok. Nothing amazing, but ok.

Authors understanding of smithing is low, if you have any yourself you'll be annoyed.

The stuff he makes is better 'because cheats' he doesnt actually know why he can smith stuff, just follows muscle memory put in his brain.

... more>> Theres also a harem that does not need to be a harem, though according to webnovel readers reviews here, theres no haream in the end it seems.

Romance feels forced, thats IF something happens, hopefully not.

World is generic fantasy, BUT there isnt any racism against other races like most stories, so far atleast. <<less

I read the LNs, the writing style draws in a rather boring subject matter more interesting than it really should. It gets rather repetitive because there is only so much a guy and his "harem" can do living alone in a forest, and so I was waiting for the author to turn it up a notch like other slow life novels do to keep readers interested but it never does, all it does is hint and tease at greater things but because of the whole MC not wanting to leave... more>> a mark on the world shtick nothing ever goes anywhere, as stated later into the novel he doesn't even create village as a future chronicler long after the MC's death visits his empty shack. I really like this series but it's also quite boring. I probably prefer to binge read this series rather than day by day as I'd lose interest if I read it per its release schedule. The character interactions are... fine, but not interesting. The characters individually are also unremarkable. There are almost no romance and there are very few exciting episodes. This is like reading the story about several room mates who get along very well... and that's it.
