“Shiyu, my heart is true for you.” These were the blatant words of passion that emerged from the Imperial Marshal‘s own lips. Yet, Chu Mingyun could not help the urge to pinch his own arm from within his sleeve.

Su Shiyu’s gentle smile deepened suddenly in that instant. The Imperial Censor then narrowed his eyes all of a sudden, before a few gentle words escaped his lips. “Are you sick?”

“Indeed I am, with lovesickness.” Chu Mingyun did not waver as he said this, and neither did his words, which he delivered without a moment’s hesitation.

“Now, if you will excuse me,” Su Shiyu nodded politely before turning around to make his leave.

Thus began the story of two people: a person who only pretended to be a cut-sleeve (T/N: literary/euphemistic term meaning ‘homosexual’) at first, but really ended up becoming one, and the person who didn’t want to get involved with said cut-sleeve, yet became a cut-sleeve even earlier than him.

This is a tale where sycophancy meets loyalty. Whenever two parties with clashing ideals cross paths, they tend to misuse each other.

You have been warned—when the goal is no longer to kill relentlessly, it becomes to love unendingly.

Is the gentleman ill? There is no cure for lovesickness.

There are mountains and rivers in your eyes, and they trump all the evergreen existences that have passed me by.

In short: The top-ranking military official pretends to fall in love with the top-ranking civil official, his rival of all time. Shenanigans ensue, but so does love.

Main CP – Evil, scheming gong (Chu Mingyun) x Gentle, scheming shou (Su Shiyu) – HE. Enemies to lovers. 1v1.

Side CP 1 – Expressionlessly passionate Shadow Guard (Qin Zhao) x Cute and air-headed medical physician (Du Yue)

Side CP 2 – Emperor (Li Yanzhen) x Brazen Jianghu Girl (Lu Qing)

It was everything I wanted in a novel! The pacing wasn't too draggy, and the romance stayed intense and gripping the whole time. I loved how the story focused on Chu Mingyun's dominating and clever perspective, while the moments we got from Su Shiyu's POV made it feel more complete. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic, mixed with all the political scheming, kept me hooked. Honestly, the plot could have gone deeper and more mysterious, but even without that, it was so enticing. Such an amazing read.

This novel, presents a rich and complex story that defies oversimplified interpretations. Some reviews may misrepresent its depth, but I firmly believe this is a work deserving of thoughtful consideration.

First and foremost, this is not light reading. The novel delves into dark and challenging themes, particularly concerning the fates of side characters. The main protagonists, Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun, also face their share of hardships, though much of this is rooted in their pasts.

One critical point to clarify is that there is no s*xual violence between the main pair.... more>> The novel does contain a scene where a threat is made against Su Shiyu, but it is carried out by a traitor who is later punished. This scene adds tension but does not cross the boundaries some might fear.

The relationship between Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun is a dance of flirtation and strategy. They often engage in playful banter, even during moments of political maneuvering. For instance, their interactions in an underground casino highlight their complex dynamic—mixing business with personal intrigue.

It's also important to note that comparing the ancient court depicted in the novel to a modern office setting misses the mark. The power struggles and distractions these characters engage in are deeply tied to their roles as high-ranking officials, with stakes far greater than typical workplace politics. Su Shiyu is fully aware of these games and sometimes uses them to his advantage.

Some reviewers have mentioned concerns about racism in the story. However, the conflicts with external tribes and foreign nations are more about territorial disputes common in ancient times, rather than racial issues. The novel even portrays characters from opposing sides with depth and nuance, illustrating the complexities of their motivations.

As for the more controversial aspects, such as the "groping" incident, it's clear that Chu Mingyun was using a distraction to achieve a specific goal—securing proof of a potential rebellion. This act, like many others in the novel, is steeped in the high stakes of political survival.

Speaking of survival, this theme is central to the novel. Both Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun are haunted by survivor's guilt, which drives many of their actions. Their experiences of loss and betrayal shape their worldviews and their approach to governance. This shared burden also forms the basis of their deepening relationship.

Their love story is one of equals—both in social standing and political influence. What begins as a strategic move by Chu Mingyun to spy on Su Shiyu evolves into a genuine connection. Their relationship is not without its challenges, but it is depicted with realism and emotional depth.

In conclusion, this novel is a powerful exploration of survival, love, and the complexities of political life. The characters remain true to themselves, even as they make compromises for each other. The story doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of their world, but it also offers a compelling portrayal of how love can thrive in even the most difficult circumstances. If you're looking for a novel that challenges and engages, this one is well worth your time. <<less

What the heck was that 2 star rating about? Did we even read the same story?

Beautiful story, beautiful prose. Enemies to lovers trope. Lots of political schemes involved but rest assure MC's love brain will make everything work out.

ML fell in love first despite MC being the one to lure him in first then fell in himself later on. All the interactions were of mutual consent. Hey, my ML can fight too, he's not a weak ML that is unable to push MC away if he wants to.

Side characters were... more>> well crafted, the angst is real though.

The ending and extras were nice but the ending caught me a little off guard (my tears). I really enjoyed this novel a lot despite putting it down frequently as I was too busy these days. 楚苏99! <<less

a big thank you to the translator!

first and foremost, the court politics. If you're someone like me who's into a good mix of romance + politics then this is for you. The court politics in this novel is presented in such a way that it feels impactful at the same time doesn't feel very heavy on the mind. The plot progresses in such a way that it will keep you gripped and not in a way that will bore you out midway.

coming to the romance, there are around 3 almost... more>> 4 cps, but the best one is of course our main cp consisting of the MC and ML. Now, from the reviews that i've seen some people do have some issues with the way the main cp's relationship progresses but honestly, for me it was perfect. The romance wasn't too early neither too late, it was progressing at a perfect rate and since I like the whole 'enemies to lovers' trope it was an added on perfection for me. One thing that you should keep in mind while reading this is that the MC and the ML both in this novel are very smart, and although it may be a bit unclear while reading but they know what they're doing, and have their own past which compels them to do so.

overall, the author has done a great job with this novel and a very satisfying read with a healthy mix of everything. <<less

6/5. Fast-paced. I'm very torn by the bad things happening to good minor chars. Lots of action scenes. MC and ML are adorable. Don't mind their justifiable violence against baddies.

There is HE. And also a summary of what happened after HE which also made me tear up. Very thankful for the Extras to soothe my aching heart.

This is worth it because each character's stays true. No matter how pain-filled the path they take, even to their unhappy resolution.

No smut, lots of plot, romance. (Too painful for me to re-read immediately)... more>> <<less

One of my favorite things about this novel is that the main characters actually talk to each other. Not just with glances or faint smiles — they have real conversations, and the way they communicate has just the right amount of spice. Honestly, I’ve had enough of couples who can’t be bothered to speak. Granted, Su Shiyu may be reserved (I feel like he's the prefect answer to the question "what if Lan Wangji was a shou?) — but he still expresses himself when it matters.

My main problem with this... more>> novel was that I felt completely drawn in by the poetic prose and the slow-burn romance of the first half, only to be hit full force by wave after wave of dramatic plot twists in the second half. And it hurt. The way Chu Mingyun and Su Shiyu’s tender longing and yearning unravel into cold misunderstandings is painfully cruel — but also exactly what you'd want if you're craving an emotional gut punch.

I really appreciate that the author didn’t stretch the story out unnecessarily. It's a complete and satisfying story.

Sorry, but I just have to mention the language again — absolutely beautiful. So many rich references to poetry and symbolism. Huge thanks to the translators for their thoughtful notes and explanations! <<less

I regret listening to the 2 star review and putting this novel off for so long. Honestly, that's the most misleading review I have ever read on NU so far. To the point I made an account just to leave this comment.

I absolutely LOVE it. And if you like QJJ I really think you should give JYJF a chance too. It became my 3rd favorite novel in my top 5 of all times.

There is absolutely no noncon between the main pair. None whatsoever. The romance between these two made me... more>> giggle, bite my pillow and weep many times throughout the novel. Both of them have heavy backgrounds and based on everything in the novel, their relationship progressed very realistically to me.

They love each other. A LOT. But they also have their own paths and goals to walk on and achieve. I could really yap all day about both SSY and CMY and still have more to say. Does CMY sometimes seem a bit crazy? He does. Would he ever do something to hurt SSY after he falls for him? NEVER. Never in a milion years. They are such pining fools I am utterlly obsessed.

The side characters are also good and pretty involved. They also made me both giggle and weep multiple times. The novel has the perfect amount of humor, angst and romance. I love it so much I can't believe I am almost done with it. I genuinely wish it was longer.

Please, give it a chance. Do NOT allow the 2 star review to make you doubt. <<less

—— "Shiyu, will you smile sincerely at me once more?" Just once more, and I will be more than willing to give my entire life to you.

I don't usually write reviews, but this novel is so good. Yes, it's political, but it's much more focused on mu*der mystery than meaningless court intrigue (even though the latter's a given). It's fast paced and full of tension, so no need to worry about the plot being boring or draggy.

Our leads, Chu Mingyun and Su Shiyu, are ministers trusted by the emperor. They're... more>> equally smart and strong and are always scheming against each other. Chu Mingyun approached Su Shiyu with bad intentions, and Su Shiyu knew this, but one thing leads to another and they get involved in mysterious death cases that forced them to work together a lot and eventually fall in love.

Their relationship is pretty rocky. They love each other, but aren't sure if they can trust each other. That sounds contradictory, and it is, but that's exactly where the complexity and the ~spice~ lies. There's a constant threat of backstabbing despite their mutual feelings and I found that to be a really interesting dynamic. I've read too many stories where people abandon everything and sacrifice their own ideals for the sake of love, but ChuSu is not that. They have their own inner demons and the way that their lived their lives really influenced their outlook on love and loyalty. It took much reflection for them to get over themselves and truly be together.

One thing about JYJF is that it has a lot of implicitness. Things like why Character A did this and why Character B did that may not be explained, so you have to read into and understand it yourself. As long as you can do that, it makes for a really enjoyable read.

Besides ChuSu, I love Qin Zhao and Du Yue so much. Very few novels can get me invested on side characters but they're such babies and I also love their romance.

Overall, amazing novel. ♡ <<less

Picked this up on a whim. This is one of the shorter danmei web novels set in the past. It's a court intrigue novel. The standard tropes are there, the writing style is fairly easy to read. I got a bit bored at about 25% in because the story didn't really hook me and the author kind of tells rather than shows when it comes to the two main characters.

BEAUTIFUL

No clue why someone rated this low but this was a compelling and short read - fantastic if you like enemies to lovers or Qiang Jin Jiu!

CMY and SS were amazing, I loved both of their characters! Loved that they were so sweet on each other but neither entertained the idea of changing their ambitions and goals. They really stayed true to themselves throughout the whole novel. I especially loved how both of them were badass (very much mirroring main Xiao Chiye and Shen Zezhuan from Qiang Jin Jiu), both... more>> having their own calculations and martial prowess.

One slight thing I didn't like, and it's not even that bad :
Spoiler

when CMY became emperor he went absolutely wild in killing people, kinda went a little crazy. I just thought it didnt fit his character to derail all of his planning over the years and cold claculations to be that brash and reckless - leading to his enemy getting and opening to attack. I suppose it made sense because he was already going a lil crazy over being apart from SS, but still it felt more reckless than he should be.

[collapse]
But yeah that was my interpretation and it all worked out in the end and we got a Happy Ending!!

I loved CMY the most, his devotion and love for SS was so heart-wrenching. I think SS fell first but my god CMY fell HARD. Cuties.. <<less

Won’t rate because I didn’t finish.

Wanted a heated enemies to lovers squabbling fighting hating to loving like Peerless, but so far it’s been kind of tepid?

I get that they’re rival powers in court, the emperor is a useless figurehead, they both be kinda OP, but I can’t seem to get into their romance (nor the side CP’s romance).

I’m not sure what is it, but I got bored. Like there’s some slight chemistry building from their forced antics, but maybe the background of it doesn’t tally—I’m just thrown into the character... more>> settings/plot points like suddenly

Spoiler

some random guy we barely got to know dies. His wife also dies. Sob story that’s quick to come and go.

[collapse]

Why is MC pretending to begin with? Is the purpose to disgust the ML so he doesn’t realise the ploys that you’re trying to do? Why is ML so dumb to let

Spoiler

MC tear the pages away? It’s so obvious what he was trying to do? Why is he behaving like a little shy never been touched baby?

[collapse]

Ehhh, don’t get it. Might pick up again, might not. <<less

(I almost feel like it's customary to say now—ignore that 2 star review ffs!)

This is a story of blind obedience vs wilful certainty—and asks, when you're faultlessly loyal, are you loyal to the throne or the people?

Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun are two powerful ministers in Emperor Li Yanzhen's court, the Grand Secretary (aka Imperial Censor) and the Grand Marshal (aka Imperial Marshal), respectively. So powerful, in fact, that if they were any less loyal, the Emperor might as well have been a puppet in their hands,... more>> with the rest of the ministers already neatly divided into a Chu Faction and Su Faction.

Be warned here that this review is going to be spoiler heavy:

Su Shiyu has four generations of loyalty to the Li family in his family history. While Chu Mingyun is a new, grassroot soldier who climbed his way up to General, then Marshal. Their political world views greatly differ, even if they do have one common point – the people should not be suffering.

Alas, Emperor Li is truly incompetent ruler. All he is interested in is arts and crafts, and even after a decade of ruling, his political acumen is zero. He has no sense of how a ruler should act, and even less of what a ruler should be like. All his decisions are made on the advice of his ministers, mainly Lord Su and Lord Chu—which, while not a bad thing, is only good in moderation—this man has made not one single self-thought decision for the court.

Actually, I stand corrected. He has made two decisions, both of which were so catastrophic in shifting the political power out of his hands, that even opposing ministers Chu and Su spoke up together in opposing it.

Now, is this anyway related to the romance? Somewhat. Majorly, in fact, because this man and his existence as the Emperor is the sole point of contention between our two leads.

As far as the MC (Chu Mingyun) and ML (Su Shiyu) are crafted, they're actually quite well done. They each have their own motives, strengths and flaws. The development of rivals to comrades to lovers to enemies and back to lovers is convoluted but well done.

As for the other pairings: Qin Zhao is fine as a character, but Du Yue is a joke in the name of a doctor. He barely does anything except act as a go between in a handful of scenes. As for chemistry? Zero, forget it!

Li Yanzhen and Lu Qinghe on the other hand... not a bad pair. Qinghe has her head on straight, and doesn't compromise her own ideals of life to just be with Li Yanzhen.

All in all, a really enjoyable book. The political machinations are well done, the mystery is also well crafted, and the romance once it starts is also pretty sweet though angsty.

This novel's plot of story isn't perfect, but I think It's so interesting that Chu Mingyun and Su Shiye's changes after they're falling in love.

I felt the story line of this novel is like sha po lang, but with easy scheme. And the novel's metaphor is so touching for me. If you're interested in reading, read at least 33 chapter! This novel is especially famous for its 33 chapter.

Judging by the reviews I was expecting exciting intrigue and sexy romance like QJJ. This novel has consistent pacing in comparison to QJJ But by chapter 30 I was SO boreeeeeeed. Like will it get better? I really want to know. Both of characters relationship so far seems to be that of enemies and their backgrounds is still a mystery at this point of the novel.

But I don't get why and how are they enemies? And why and how have the two factions formed. The romance is subtle not dramatic... more>> and the two main character are mature adults who act according people of their status and title but then I still don't get how is this enemies to lovers???? I mean I can't feel the s*xual tension and excitement.

I guess I will pick it up for later but for now I am bored and need something more fast paced...

It's really hard to rate on novelupdates. I give this book a solid 2.5 in between rating. <<less

I loved the characters so much. They’re all logical and have their own back stories and so well fleshed out that they seem alive. The writing is so good and te plot development was well done. Though the angst was prolonged it has reasons and it was worth it in the end.

If you're in the mood for a short dive into court politics, this could be your next read! It's easy to read and offers a lighthearted look at the power plays in a royal setting.

The main characters are contrast personality—our main character is all sharp wit and smart, while the male lead is more of a brooding prince type, with the ML being pretty insistent on his pursuance of MC. Watching their dynamic unfold is entertaining, though I have to say it does drag a bit toward the end, with... more>> a repetitive theme.

Overall, it's not a complicated read, perfect for when you want something fun without too much brain strain. Just be ready for it to stretch a little longer than you'd hope! <<less
