That lonesome night as he lays dying in the hospital, fearing of death and desiring the taste of life, his mind became unprecedentedly complex with mixed emotions.

Myasthenia gravis — an incurable disease where one’s muscle slowly degenerated until the day when one can no longer move and only tears may flow.

“Is this… dying?”

When he opened his eyes again, he had crossed over into the body of a two months old infant, right in the middle of an assassination attempt.

He was born as the illegitimate son of a noble. His name was Fan Xian; and with that name came the burden of deep political secrets and the legacy of his mother.

He understood; to survive, he needed unparalleled strength, money and political power.

To a new world with the luxury of a new life, so named; Celebrating the Remaining Life.

Spoiler

A modern girl travelled to an ancient Chinese world, built a business empire, made tons of money, enthralled the most promising young men, revolutionized government structure, gave birth to a baby boy and then got killed by people who felt threatened by her.

This novel is about her son, who grows up quietly by the sea until he is recalled to the capital and gets involved with all the shadowy, powerful figures who knew his mysterious mother and have been waiting for him all along... The MC is also a transmigrated modern person, but it's rarely mentioned.

Huge, huge spoiler:

Spoiler

technically, it's not transmigration. Modern Earth froze over, and people were cryogenically frozen. Civilizations crumbled. Survivors had to start all over from scratch - like cave people then to feudal society - and now they're at the stage of an ancient Chinese civilization - because the cryogenically people were slowly released and influenced the surviving world with Chinese writing and culture. MC's mom was one of the ancient cryogenically frozen people, and the MC was a special baby that was experimented on to have the memories of an ancient person from when Earth first froze over. Anyway, that's what they mentioned in one episode of the drama...

[collapse]

This is a very long novel to read. There are 974 chapters, and chapters 77 onwards are locked at web novel. You have to pay in money or "stones" in order to unlock the chapters. This can get expensive and time-consuming.

This is mainly a political drama novel. Every action has 2-3 deeper meanings, multiple schemers, and it's all about the fight for the throne, fighting other countries, controlling the finances and trade routes, and sometimes learning cultivation. I managed to read to chapter 516 of the English translation, but I can't read anymore. There's just too much scheming and plotting. Also, the MC is ruthlessly killing a lot of people, which I'm not a fan of.

In the novel, the women who are older than him are all beautiful, more powerful than him, and want him dead (Princess Royale, Empress, Empress Dowager). The women who are younger than him are all pretty, and admiring or in love with him and perfectly happy to share him with all the other women. The only exception is his grandma, who carefully raised him. So although the women in the story seem very complex and varied, either they are his older enemies or his younger lovers/admirers. In the drama, he's totally in love with his fiancee/wife. But in the book, despite that, he manages to sleep with several other women and they end up as his concubines or mothers of his children. Hence the harem tag, I guess. There is absolutely no jealous scheming for his attention though. All the women who love him are happy to share him with other women.

Also, a reviewer mentioned that the MC sent his beloved to be married to another. If I remember correctly, the MC was 11, and his maid was 16, the age when regular girls had to be married off. He made sure she married well, and protected her later on in the story. He wasn't in love with her, he just took care of her as his servant. Although, he does take one of his later maids as a concubine.

The translation was fine, but some of the royal terms were a mess. The king's nephew is referred to as "Crown Prince" (he's not), the Princess Consorts are called "empresses", and concubines are described as marrying in like wives (they're not - concubines are s*aves, wives are masters).

Anyway, I couldn't read beyond chapter 516 because the political scheming was getting too deep, I couldn't relate to the MC anymore, and the female characters weren't interesting to me. I'd still give it 4 stars though, because it's a good novel, it's just not for me. I enjoyed the drama, which was much faster (the negotiation at Hongle Temple for the Northern Qi was quick), and had a very fun, quirky soundtrack that really added to the feel of the story (especially the '80's comedic sounds). However, halfway through the first drama, the lack of female characters became wearying to watch (for every few hundred male officials, guards, middle aged men, cultivators, soldiers, peasants, servants, and employees, there would be 1 or 2 beautiful young women).

I haven't read the whole book (a bit over a quarter), so this review may be inaccurate. Remember I'm reviewing only the part I've read.

Now that you've been warned, let me proceed. I gave this book a try because of the hype about it (and the author), at least in reviews, but I'm disappointed. Joy of Life? More like Joy of Mediocrity. The book doesn't have any particularly big weaknesses, but it doesn't have real strengths, either.

For example, the characters. They do have complexity to them, and they do have... more>> some depth, but it's vague. The main character, for one, wants to differ from "transmigration-class" protagonists, but fails to deliver much on it. It doesn't feel like he's striving all that much for his main goals, and it doesn't seem like he's indulging in them if he gets any of it (due to the nature of his goals, it is really, really apparent because he should be striving for them, and you completely forget that he had such goals after a while as you read). His personality feels fuzzy, and I can't even describe it easily, because it's too vague. Most other characters either have no real depth, or their depth is that they're quite confusing, and it's hard to tell what they're thinking (which is good at times, but could've been delivered better).

Love interests and romance in general aren't that much better.

I liked the way the first love interest was introduced and got to know the protagonist, it was quite interesting and novel. However, their romance could've been developed so much better, it could've been fleshed out so much more. I was like, what, that's it? They're together already? when it culminated in marriage, and the first love interest gradually vanished from the story later (which is somewhat understandable given that a new arc in a different place has begun, but also forced and too fast imo).

The other characters are meh. When I stopped reading, I looked up the spoilers, and the girls I expected to become MC's indeed became his, and all of those already introduced by chapter 217 were cliche itself, both as characters and the way their relationship with MC developed until that point. For a fan of good romance, it couldn't have been more disappointing.

A big problem with characters is that I didn't really care about any of them. The protagonist I cared about at first because of his ambitions and problems, but then only because he was the protagonist. The first girl I cared about because she was interesting, but then she stopped being interesting. As for other characters, they're not nearly fleshed out enough to care about them, nor did the author at the point he wrote this book have the skill to make readers care about characters.

Martial arts in the story could've been much better. I like the wuxia approach, why not, but the author didn't put much effort into it so far. Why bother with superhuman (as in, above normal physical limits, not actual superman) martial arts when they're barely described throughout the book.

The plot isn't particularly interesting, either. There are multiple subplots, and in most of the part of the story I read, political intrigues dominated. However, they are boring, honestly. They're complicated enough, yes, but it's hard to be interested when you don't care about the players involved in those schemes. The schemes themselves were nothing amazing, either. They weren't bad, but that's it. That aside, the story should've been driven by the protagonist and his goals (and other characters and their goals, but most of them are irrelevant or still a mystery until where I read), yet it doesn't really happen. His goals are pretty much forgotten, and the events conveniently somewhat align themselves with steps to take to reach those goals.

This is a novel with slow pacing, which is good, but the author failed to deliver on the potential slow pacing provides. The story should've been much more fleshed out, and the slow pace provided the author with the means to do that, yet too much of the novel was vague and fuzzy.

The writing style also disappointed me. While it could've been the translator failing to convey it, in English at least it's also mediocre, just like the rest of this book. Compare to Otherworldly Evil Monarch, for example: it's also a mediocre novel, but it had some good and even great parts, particularly the humor and the writing style that could be both witty and emotional (especially emotional, it gave the novel a soul sometimes), and it was a pleasant read (mostly) even despite having a lacking translation (grammar errors and such) for some parts. Even though the political schemes and plots there weren't much more advanced than here, they were written much better and more engaging. Oh, except the last arc, that was crap, and nothing could salvage it.

Also, a bit spoilerish,

Spoiler

I like that MC's mother was also from Earth like him, but she was way too OP, to the point it's strange that she even died. I also dislike the author's idea to make her leave a damn sniper rifle for her son, even if he can't use it at all until chapter 217, and it seems to be pretty much kept away from him so that he can't use it. Why even give it to him... It shouldn't have appeared at all imo.

[collapse]

Oh, and I forgot. There was plenty of plagiarizing in this novel. So basically the protagonist used his knowledge of poems and such from China to show off in the different world. Imo it's something boring, unoriginal, and redundant. If I want to appreciate poetry, I expect to go look for poems myself or see the author write his own. Plagiarizing should've been kept to minimum or omitted altogether. It just gives a false depth to the protagonist.

So overall, I didn't really enjoy the novel, and had to force myself to read the last 20-30 chapters I read. I don't recommend, unless you're really bored and have the patience to read hundreds of chapters even if they don't entertain you much (which patience I lacked). <<less

This novel is so good. A litle slow place, but overall is good.

This is not Face-slapping novel, or another IMBA MC, or madman or rapist MC. This stuff morelike a drama.

The character is solid, the background is very good. AND its not some illogical non sense bullsh*t xianxia/wuxia whre you can slay a god.

Honestly, I think the story telling is excellent. The characters all have depth and the romance is sweet whilst the politics and mysteries are both well thought out intriguing. However, it severely lacks the action that I expect from the genre. Personally, while it was well written and translated, I felt as though the story progressively lost momentum due to the absence of much action worth mentioning. My four star rating is born out of the respect I have for the story; the detraction of a star is simply as... more>> it didn't fit my tastes and expectations.

If you are looking for an excellent story, then I suggest it. However, if you are looking for a Xianxia and everything that tends to go with it, you may wish to pass on this one. <<less

It is a bit slow, but it only slightly. All the time spent on the Volume 1 seems only slightly overdrawn. I like the MC. He acts his age and people respond appropriately to his "too mature for his age" disposition.

The most fleshed-out characters I've ever read.

Plotline: 4.3/5

Characters: 6/5

... more>> Romance: 4/5

Action: Shouldn't be judged upon as this was never the focus.

Overall: 4.6/5

This novel explores the psychological warfare carried out by myriads of people with varying understanding of life to achieve their means. Many novels have good and fleshed out characters, but they are usually bottlenecked by their author's intelligence. What's different here is that author's intelligence and understanding of the human psyche is far more than just 1 or 2 levels, allowing him to predict and write realistic reactions of the characters he has created. Characters like the Eldest Princess and Emperor are just mind-blowing. Reading about those godlike characters with 1 I.Q even after living for 100s of years in xianxia novels is just disappointing, and this is a breath of fresh air.

Spoiler

Reasoning that led to the emperor's decision to act against Ye Qingmei is just amazing and deeply shows the rift between two possible ideologies. No cliche, no half-assed backstory but a proper foundational plot point that blooms throughout the story.

[collapse]

How the eldest princess did whatever she did is just mind-blowing. I understand that the eldest princess was 5 parts evil/crazy, 1 part lonely, 1 part proud, 1 part jealous, 1 part pitiful, and deserves no one's sympathy as she brought everything upon herself, but just the existence of such a complex human in a story blows my mind.

Many authors use the terms like 'Heaven', 'Godly', 'Divine', blah blah to create a majestic sounding environment of the story and still massively fail to truly imprint such ideas in the reader's subconscious. But in this story, a character's wit alone made them seem unsurmountable, majestic, and something to be feared. The whole complex net of this story was a bit dry for me as I was able to predict most of the plot, but the interactions, characters, and their thought-process were pure gold.

Few negative points: Romance felt dry a lot of times, especially the first few romantic interactions (Lin Wan'er) were way too childish for me to look nicely upon. I understand MC was 'just' 16, but how come romance was much more wholesome when he was 17. Also, considering how great his E.Q is shown to be, he had the arrogance to think of his 'sister' as a 'daughter like' figure and still not figure out her inner thoughts about himself. No real closure was given to her even after her thoughts were exposed to MC by the emperor. Story talks so much about following what one wishes, yet she's led on by author for almost 700 chapters to be blatantly summarized in 2 lines as being followed by HongCheng for five years. One can say that's life, but one can much more confidently say that author lacked time or patience to properly develop her as a romantic interest after all the plot points were exhausted or just give her a rejective closure.

Also, after about 450 chapters, the length of chapters increased drastically, but actual content in the story lessened quite a bit per cent wise around ch 500-650 something. I understand and wholly accept that scene building is necessary for a novel, but it needs moderation and should not interrupt the actual content or drag down the pacing. Pacing would have felt much better if some reactions were trimmed out, scene descriptions were shortened and swapped with meaningful interactions. This was the case for only about 150 chapters, so it's not to be minded much, but it was definitely bothersome.

I won't go on about the story itself as it's a very great piece of literature and is a must-read. But be cautious before picking up this novel as it needs quite a bit of psychological understanding of human nature to be read properly and enjoy doing so. Reading this without knowing how to read between the lines, understanding settings and mood will just confuse you and make you despise the author for making such random characters.

Anyways, the plot is good, romance is fine, characters are gold. So I hope you get a good time out of this novel. <<less

A court conspiracy/politics story but not too boring, a harem story but not too disgusting, a wuxia story but not too overbearing, and a sci fi story but not too cliche. Honestly this is truly one of a kind type of novel that I can’t quite place how special and memorable it is.

Fan Xian is one of those MC that pulls through the obstacles with considerable struggle and doesnt win each battle. He relies pretty much on his wit, shamelessness, quick-thinking, and clever deductions and of course LUCK! But somehow they dont get on my nerves. I’ve read two of mao ni’s books and although the MC seem to be similar in character, mao ni still manage to portray them explicitly special with unique individuality that puts them characters far apart and different from each other.

I just cant believe I’ve finished the book. I think this is the only book with more than 500 chapters that I’ve read that I can’t get enough of. With other books, I just cant wait to get to the finish line, and felt quite relieved when I did (Nightfall included), but with Qing Yu Nian, I keep wanting more. Fan Xian is such an interesting character and his life is unique too. And Wu Zhu! Gosh Mao Ni really prepared quite a surprise in the end. I never thought Wu Zhu was actually ‘that’ (which is why I considered this book has sci fi element).

Mao Ni’s imagination is truly outstanding and his writing is truly breathtaking.

Please notice the warning before reading the novel

This novel is written for the Chinese Reader. The author never think it'd be translated to other language/culture. So..

####

... more>> This novel is good or worst highly depend on reader's past experience. There's no between. The worst is waiting for those highly-expected readers who join this novel because they had watched the drama.

Not recommend for readers who just start reading Chinese novel & have less literature background; especially Chinese literature/politic/culture. The novel is so full of them. Also so much of the read-between-the-line plot development. So when the author refers to Jin Yong, Asimov, Tolstoy, etc, you will be lost.

What is your joy of life? That's the main theme. Yours. Not mine nor theirs.

MC is the time traveler. He starts as the near-dead patient, from myasthenia gravis, the very grave disease. It slowly kills you while you still have full concious about yourself and the world around you. The MG disease strangles you with depress, despress, depress, hopelessness, joyless, futureless. So once you're transport to new life, full of life, joy and future, what would you do? Are you sure that it's not a dream and start enjoy evertything madly?

===

The plot is too twisted while developing MC, world and all side characters. Those characters have their individuality. Not just a plain vanilla character. Some insignificant & small characters are not "just-there". Couple with lots of 3-D villains, you may be confused finally.

For example, the half-a-line-mentioned, insignificant 12 yo girl who falls in love with his plagiarized novel is the key turning point of the 300 chapters later plot.

The final chapter is.. Well.. Out-of-plot but perfectly answers all the early 100+ no-reason, word-filling, empty plots. But it's so forcefully shoved down the throat. <<less

It's a bit slow at the start but I really enjoy the first couple of chapter, so I thought I finally found the perfect xianxia but no, it become (Filler after filler) like your typical CN novel with filler in every chapter to increase the life of the novel but meh, I will continue to read it to see what happen next.

This is an awesome novel

I loved every second like nightfall and outcast

It's frustrating that I can't find another novilist like mao ni who takes time and develop a nice plot (has a lot of chapters too), Only novels which I have read that com close are Douluo Dalu, Human Emperor and Gate of God.

Guys any suggestions for a similar novelist and wuxias?

**LOTS OF OTHER REVIEWS HAVE HUGE PLOT RUNING UNHIDDEN SPOILERS SO LOOK OUT**

This is an interesting, if somewhat slow for the genre read. It's nowhere near as good as the authors later work it's still decent but honestly I don't think I'd recommend reading it.

My enjoyment of it was marred by a few factors. While most of the characters had some depth to them the main characters character felt oddly fluid. It seemed to switch at the authors whims and while acting inconsistently is certainly human the inconsistencies in his... more>> character felt very artificial at times.

He was, like a lot of the characters, flawed but in fairly unlikeable ways. While it is unfortunately a staple for the genre his sociopathy was off-putting but nowhere near as much as his sexism. A "charming" example of his viewpoint "As Fan Xian saw it, as soon as a woman thought she was powerless to resist, she was already preparing not to resist." He also spends a considerable amount of time thinking of how to get a harem, not because he loves the women but just that he feels he should have lots of women as a testament to his success.

His chauvinism was acknowledged by the third person narrative voice. But unfortunately said narrative voice did the same thing, there's lots of casual sexism in the novel (another problem with the genre) eg. "Fan Xian knew very well that in this world, the scariest ones were children, women, and the insane, because those three groups of people could not be dealt with using logic and could not be rationally analyzed. " While it isn't there all the time and there are competent female characters it pops up regularly enough to be jarring and the female characters are often very stereotypical. There's also several mentions of p*rnography, both from the main characters viewpoint and from the authorial voice that are pretty creepy e.g. The main character talking about he he could woo his fiance using tricks garnered from watching p*rnography (unless Chinese p*rnography is very very different there's very little "wooing" involved)

That's without getting into the inherent creepiness of all reincarnation/isekai romances. He's mentally over 50 and marrying a sixteen or seventeen year old girl and the readers supposed to be cool with that romance (thats not even getting into the familial relationships involved).

The protagonists "harem" is transparent male wish fulfillment. It's a big mark against the novel in my opinion. Actually maybe thats the novels main problem. It has the trappings of maturity but the core feels very juvenile. The plot can be a bit hit or miss at times. There's a big "twist" about 130 chapters in that feels like it was written purely to shock the reader but just comes across as really (really) s*upid. Parts of it were telegraphed before hand but the more, lets say physical parts of the revelation really ruin ones suspension of disbelief. Which is saying something.

Also, and this may just be a difference between the two languages that translation can't account for, the prose often felt vaguely masturbatory as if it was purposefully obtuse to amuse the author. There's also a fair bit of "Chinese culture uber alles!" but thats all in character from the (Chinese) protagonist so it didn't feel particularly grating.

Finally the book perpetuates the dangerous fiction that torture is a useful and valid means of extracting information which I find personally repulsive.

Now all this might seem very negative but there are good bits as well. There's a lot of interesting and engaging world-building and the author does a good job of slowly revealing mysterious elements but without letting the reader feel that they're being purposefully kept in the dark. As mentioned the cast have some depth to them and most of them act based on understandable and human feeling motivations. The main character, apart from the "breaks" mentioned above also behaves in a manner that "makes sense" given his situation and life prior to reincarnation.

Ultimately I'd suggest not wasting your time with this and reading the authors Way of Changes instead. <<less

Keeping it short, this is a book that took/still takes a lot out of me to follow and understand. Even the smallest of the seemingly unimportant sentences might at a point have the greatest implications towards the plot and how the characters function & act at times. This is why some readers are unable to understand why certain things happen the way they do- simply speaking they just can't follow up. They're casuals.

While there are some very minor issues here and there this is still undoubtedly a masterpiece and should... more>> treated as real literature instead of just your run-off-the-mill web novel. I believe this book has taken considerable effort to write and we should all be thankful for the authors hard work. <<less

The book itself is very good, as expected from a Mao Ni novel. It is a slow burn just like many of his other books, and has a good amount of slice of life aspects in it. I believe that slice of life aspects make the story more compelling, as most chinese novels have fight after fight after fight, with a plot climax every 50-100 chapters. This book on the other hand ramps up real slow, while doing a decent amount of world building and setting up the plots and... more>> character interactions.

The worst aspect is the translation. First 200~ or so chapters are very well translated, which is followed by another 200~ chapters of very subpar translation, and rest of the novel having mid quality. It seems like there was a change in translators, and since the qidian is known for it's subpar translations and wildly varying translation quality from chapter to chapter, it takes a decent chunk away from the novel's enjoyment. <<less

i found this LN very deep. brilliantly written. common LN written in easy to understand style. but this one, is so deep that I have to carefully read every sentence to feel the character's mood. very tiring, but also very satisfying. too bad, I loathe the romance part here. TT__TT blame my dull without spring life here in reality.

nope. there's no pink bubbles... this work literally shattered my beautiful dream.

yet, I really enjoy the other parts here... action, slice of life, palace intrigue, and etc. again shall I say, very satisfying reading material.
