JK Haru is a S*x Worker in Another World

It started when my weirdo classmate, Chiba, tried to save me from a runway truck and got us both killed instead. Idiot. Then we got transported to another world, which I guess is like an otaku dream come true, or something? Chiba ends up with cheat abilities, and what do I get? Nothing! Lucky me, I get to be a s*x worker instead. Gotta earn some money somehow – but since I have to do it, I’m gonna kick ass at it. This world treats women even worse than the one we came from, so things get…rough. Still, I’ve made friends with some of the girls, and if I can juggle Chiba’s idiocy and Sumo the virg*n’s emotions on top of all the various kinks my customers throw at me, things will be alright…won’t they?

I read both volumes of this series (JK Haru summer being second volume). I found this to be an interesting read. This is more of a “what if you were Isekai but with no power” compared to your usual Isekai. This leads to the title of the book, Haru, our main character becoming a s*x worker. Being a high school student before, there were not many skills she had and on top of that, this new world is very misogynistic. Further limiting her options which leads to her conclusion that... more>> this would be best way to make money. This being a book on prostitution, there is lots of adult themes in the book that could make some uncomfortable. The author doesn’t skip around the topics but decides to confront them head on. Showing the dangers and violence that is associated with this field of work. Again, this could make some feel uncomfortable and if that is you, then I would not recommend this book. If you are willing to have an open mind about this book, it can be an interesting read on a more realistic approach to an Isekai.

Regarding the plot, there is not too much of an overarching plot between the two books. This is more of a slice of life novel with the book following the day-to-day life of Haru with some alternative POV’s of different characters. That said, this is not episodic in nature. Events happens, and they do influence later events or actions of the characters. This is one of the things I liked about the novel. You get to see how the characters mature and develop as the story moves on. Even some very minor side characters are influenced by this which is great. Haru chose to work as a s*x worker out of necessity, but she does not despise her job. And instead, has a “be the best” mentality in her work and does what she can to improve her environment however minor of a change it might be.

Haru as a character is one my favorite. She is sassy and tries to help her fellow coworkers however way she can. She can be very stubborn as well. Overall, she feels like a type of person you could met in real life. Chiba is the other person who got isekai along with Haru. This guy was most definitely written to be hated by everyone. He is annoying as hell, and I do not like him. But he is mostly there to be a bit of a parody of power fantasy Isekai. He is a chunibyou who wants power and fame with no effort because he feels he deserves it. He is in the book mostly to be a juxtaposition to Haru. In the second book, you see more about his perspective and his motivations where he tries to redeem himself a bit. Not enough to make him likeable, but a change towards the positive which is fine considering that the time scale isn’t very large. A person won’t change drastically overnight, but certainly can try to change over time.

There are two books in this series, although the second book is a bit weird in terms of timeline. It overlaps quite a bit with the first book, showing what different characters were doing and explaining some events that might have been unclear in the first. First book focuses more on Haru’s perspective, while second book shows what Haru couldn’t see. Second book is also more toned down compared to first book, being closer to your typical slice of life novel. Ending in both books are a bit disappointing. That said, I still enjoyed the bulk of the material even if end was a letdown.

Spoiler

First book ends in a cliff hanger. By it-self, the ending isn’t too bad. However, it sets up the expectations that it will be covered later in the second book. However, once you move into the second book, it starts mid-timeline and even covers some stuff that occurs before 1st book. While interesting to see more of the world first book began, its feels like a big let down having to wait for the continuation of first book timeline. Then you find out the cliffhanger of first book isn’t really addressed. The stuff related to cliffhanger of first book occurs in the background and in some time skips which makes volume 2 ending even more disappointing. Feels like the author had a lot he wanted to write about. But rather than focusing on only some of those ideas, he crammed them all into two volumes and skipped over some important details to fit it all.

This story is all in all pretty mid. It may illustrate the aspects of s*x work from the perspective of a teenager/young woman. This viewpoint is used to put a dark sarcastic twist on Isekai and Harem Tropes.
Spoiler

Unfortunately the plot twist of getting stronger by being cummed inside isn't well thought out. As she is able to get worldbreakingly strong the author just stops there without putting in the effort to write a satisfying ending. The constraints of the title also make it impossible for haru to just stop being a s*x worker. By law of diminishing returns it doesn't make sense for her to have s*x with small fries as they don't have much to offer in exp and skills. It maybe would have made sense for her to become a traveling premium escort for the strong elite. But that also may have destroyed the setting which the author was going for. Back to the point. The only point for her to be suddenly revealed as powerful was to give some relief in the process of a revenge plot. Unfortunately this power-up is not used for a greater ending. Instead the story kinda fizzles out in a business as usual manner.

Surprisingly, it's good.

It's a mix between isekai story x harem and reality what if a teen girl get transported into medieval level civilization. You got your usual nerd transported into isekai world with bishoujo, skill, magic, it even has demon lord. Yet the story is not about becoming OP. It breaks a lot of taboo and tropes commonly found in other novels. As the title mentioned, the MC works as prostitute. It's not about smut, but it's not about feminism either. For those who are looking for being OP, waifu,... more>> or romance- this novel has none of that.

To be honest the ending is bittersweet for me. I wish there are more chapters. I wish for her to get her happy end, and the ending feels way too real/open ended.

While some might say "She should try other means of living! Improve the world with soap/agricultural reform!". Tbh, most isekai are really naive when it comes to business. It's more about management and connection rather than anything. Note that's she's stranded without id in male oriented world, with high school mentality.
Spoiler

later in the story, after she got neccesary skill she started adventuring.

. The action that she took didn't always follow current morals, but you could understand why she took those action. <<less

I got halfway through it and I just don't know why I am reading it. If you want to sober up from harem fantasies this is the novel for you. A teenage girl who decides that prostitution is the only course in life and refuses to use the resources around her to get ahead for "feminism?" If you want to feel like sh*t or love the horrors of prostitution with some comedy this book is for you.
