I can not take a story that is set in modern day that still uses daggers. Unless it is a hundred daggers flying at once, there is no way I would choose a flying dagger over guns.

Giving this novel a solid 4 out of 5. Its a damn good xianxia with a I want to say interesting MC but more the world is what has me enthralled more than anything else. For me this novel is IET's most underrated novel being translated think modern world but the cultivation of a xianxia still exists. So that means past a certain level which the MC passed a while ago guns mean nothing. The MC has tragedy occur to him I won't spoil which makes him go screw this... more>> and now he's getting help from a devil immortal who was a general back in china a few centuries ago.

All in all a good novel that should be instantly loved by any IET fans. <<less

I'll be honest here, I didn't find this story quite eye-catching.

But after reading through the story, I find this story to be quite surprising and the world-building has always been a strong skill of IET.

I enjoy the idea of Modern World with Xianxia Cultivation.

I read this in MTL, so some of the issues I read were caused by this -- but not the plot issues.

This seems like a less polished version of a I Eat Tomatoes webnovel, but still enjoyable -- somewhat.

Early on, the character is motivated by his beloved's death, and this propels him through much of the novel, a bit like Desolate Era, so it has a motivation.

The world-building in the modern era is pretty awful, with the sketchiest (and wrong) detail outside of China; but even within China, the society... more>> and interaction are pretty bad. I was reminded of Swallowed Star -- IET just does not do modern society well; at least it was a somewhat futuristic fantasy in SS, but Inch of Radiance is supposed to start in the modern eta, so this was especially clumsy.

Once in a fantasy setting, it got better. One expects plot armor in these types of Xianxia novels, but it was a bit too obvious here. Also, I did not care for lack of agency: several times MC, instead of laborious or dangerous cultivation got s**ked into a location where he got stronger while sleeping -- it smacked too much of "destiny" and goes against the whole "cultivation is setting one's will against heavens".

On the whole, I liked reading this novel; but it's less consistent and less enjoyable then pure fantasy world ones from IET's pen. <<less
