Mochizuki Touya, a 15-year-old boy, who got zapped by a flash of lightning due to a freak accident caused by God, wakes up and finds himself face-to-face with God.

“I am afraid to say that I have made a blunder…” laments the old coot. In order to smooth over the fault, God says that he can reincarnate Touya into a world of fantasy, and allow Touya to bring the smartphone! Then in a new, anachronistic pseudo-medieval world begins Touya’s adventure.

Friends! Laughs! Tears! Inexplicable Deus ex Machina! Mochizuki Touya sets off on a journey full of wonder as he absentmindedly travels from place to place, following whatever goal catches his fancy. The curtains on an epic tale of swords, sorcery, and smartphone apps lift!

Sadly, it's the typical "some moron got a lot of luck on his side that even if he does normal things everyone is head over heels for him".

Do not misunderstand the following criticism. The story is at least readable. This is the point of view of someone who has been reading novels for years.

There's absolutely NOTHING new or significant to the plot, characters, dialogue, description, conveyance, etc.

Generally, authors use big names like Babylon in this series, or maybe other novel examples where they use Zeus, Excalibur, World Tree, etc. In... more>> order to make a wealthy story richer. But what's done here is dress a peasant in pyrite accessories and say he's wearing gold.

I admit that after reading the first TWO DOZEN novels about a harem that revolves around a worthless guy (be it apparent or not), I started rating similar series less, but not so much to undermine the whole thing. So I gave it a shot nonetheless. But when you build your story on the basis of a plot that's like a well used worn out rag, well there you go, the plot is like a well used worn out rag. <<less

Well, it's a slice of life in another world... That's it. The humor is nonexistent (there's satire, but no humor, there's a difference), the action is nonexistent, all the side characters have the personality of an NPC: only existing to assist the MC. And worse yet, the MC was gifted extraordinary god-like power but only uses it to build bicycles, hot springs and electric fans, even though there's a race of demons who are capable of wiping out the human race, the unmotivated, indecisive MC just spends his time leisurely... more>> resting on his laurels. He decides to spend his time on slice of life magic even though he should be capable enough to learn more powerful magic, all so that he can hide behind 12 year-old girls when it comes time to battle. At least in Man Picked Up By the Gods (a similar slice of life Isekai WN) the MC is motivated, decisive and capable of protecting himself.

With such an overused concept, there needs to be some aspect that stands out in order for the story to be entertaining, but this series has none. The satire is actually very good (I'm assuming it's satire and not just horrible writing), but the reader can't be entertained by satire alone, there has to be some other element such as comedy, action, adventure, or a unique MC. This series falls woefully short on all counts. If this is your first Isekai novel then it might be worth two stars, but if you're an Isekai veteran just skip this. <<less

Boring.

No real conflict or strife, bad guys are immediately recognizable and are hapless before the main character. Supporting cast is superficial and uninteresting, social and class differences are mentioned but never play into anything concrete—the main character mingles with nobles without any trouble, a f*cking Earl gives lip to a Duke without any consequences, the MC essentially tries to casually kill a noble and no one cares etc.— those pesky old nobility are racist and backwards and are trying to plot the destruction of those poor beastmen because reasons while... more>> the sickly king on his deathbed is worrying about the alliance with the beastman kingdom instead of his family.

Main character is bland and uninspired; his weapons and magic have no actual flavor thus the fights are boring and short, with no room for turnabouts or climaxes.

Translation is decent enough and the writing is acceptable. <<less

MC gets reincarnated and is given the choice to bring any one item. He chooses his smartphone, which God turns into an OP smartphone. It’s a decent story, pretty average. Smart MC who isn’t a wuss, always a plus. There is a harem, he's pretty much a magnet for girls. The phone is a little too OP, but since this novel gives off more of a slice of life vibe, it doesn’t detract from the value too much.

The low raters clearly do not understand what "light-hearted" and "slice of life" means.

If you can't be bothered to read my short review please do check the recommendations to know if you wanna read the novel or not.

Anyway, on to my 'review':

The novel has a 2 (possibly 3) plots though it takes over 100 chapters to get a glimpse of them. There's little (or most of the time) no action due to the world having an almost peaceful era. The adventurer days were done in a couple of chapters because... more>> it was done in a single country and there are other countries to "explore" which is an important part for the plot.

This review isn't made to encourage you to read this novel but rather a "rating" that can be used for those looking for a light-hearted slice of life story. <<less

Pretty self-aware for a story of this genre. Less of an escapist fantasy and more of a satire with a solid plot.

The world building isn't quite as complete as it could be, but may be expanded on in the future.

General impression: Fun.

It's one of the rare long running series that still managed to stay somewhat entertaining even to it's 400 chapters, a lot of long running series even though the beginning are interesting they're running out of gas and become boring after hundreds of chapters. Altough with the precaution of that it's not bad but it's also not groundbreaking; it stays in the line of interesting enough to read even though it's not a masterpiece. Maybe because even though the MC is OP and his power keeps increasing, the obstacle is also increasing in proportion with the MC's growth too. The author is smart enough in rising the scale of the world in the series in keeping it somewhat interesting.

What helps keeping it interesting is it's having a rather clear goal troughout the series, compared to other WNs that lost the sense of goal along the way. For some time the MC needs to collect a series of thing, another time there's a clear set of enemy to defeat. Though it's true that it's somewhat simplistic but it's reassuring that the MC have somekind of purpose to achieve.

From half point from the series there's a minor genre shift into something else, but it's a good thing. For those who are curious about the genre shift:
Spoiler

it's introducing mecha elements in the series to defeat new kind of enemies

Overall, the MC himself is overpowered from the start (all maxed stats/cheats). He got a back up from a god already, so it's obvious, right?

He got a good personality and all. At least he's modest and humble kind, in a way that he'll be your good friend if he's a real person.

If you are a casual or some reader who wants an official harem-ending canon pairing, this one's for you. Just keep in mind, the story itself is not that much serious at the start; only the later chapters.

I'm writing this because I saw ALOT of prejudice in the reviews/comments. First, I do understand that like the LN (wn) or not is a matter of taste and opinion. Second, I also saw some good criticism as well.

Starting with why I like the series: light hearted story and world, overall kind characters, and something to keep smiling while reading. I love the MC personality (timid, shy, but still marries everyone and isn't weird to the point of never growing up.). I like the way the girls act as well.... more>> Well, its a simple and bright story, filled with happiness and normal daily stuff. Although I also enjoy darker and more serious stories, I love the cutness in this series, and like the fights too. It is indeed my favorite series.

If you like something to distract, make you feel warm hearted, simple and pure. Then go ahead, I am sure you'll like this novel. If you like serious, dark, and realistic stories, this one will probably go agaisnt your tastes, but I think you might enjoy it to pass time. But keep in mind the theme of the series, otherwise you might dislike it and criticize for a silly reason (like reading a love story and saying its bad because it is a love story.)

Now, why I feel most criticisms here are ilogical and done by people who didn' Even tried to read anything, i'll give some examples:

First, the MC does almost everything by himself, which goes agaisnt those comments of him hiding behind the girls.

second, he spends almost everyday researching ways to fight the demons, which also goes agaisnt the comments saying he does nothing everyday and dont even care about the invasion.

he already learned every magic in the world, and is only behind the Sword Goddess in terms of swordsmanship skills. Which also eliminates the statements saying he isn't great in anything, just avarege in everyThing.

And, to go against the comments that says"people love and like him for no reason". He is described as the kindest person in the world, and while he is powerfull enough to conquer/destroy the whole world, he uses his powers to make everyone happier, trying to make the world more peacefull and creating things to bring joy to everyone, and when he does save a king/country/civilian he refuses any rewards and just do it for the sake of helping others. He also does everyThing in his power to satisfy the girls, and the only thing that makes he get angry is when someone tries to harm any of his wives, or when someone insults one of them. That seems like a good reason for everyone to fall in love. Powerfull, selfless, dependable, kind, gentle, and is described as beatiful by everyone.

And, ending this comment, he only allows everyone to contribute in fights so they dont feel useless. He gives them the chance to shine, that doesn't mean he can't or dont do anything. <<less

Japanese teenager becomes comically OP and goes around collecting a harem because he didn't immediately try to brutalize every single woman he meets, except this time he has a smartphone! MC is also a super doormat that has no will of his own and just goes where other people tell him to go and does things because that's what good guys do.

No tension, no threats, no character development, no desires, no real plot, no one has to face any real threats or overcome anything to grow as a person but... more>> now with a smartphone!!! Another MC who has everything handed to them and does absolutely nothing with that power except travel aimlessly. This story only feels like a slice of life story because the MC is so shallow and devoid of any motivations that it never goes anywhere except when he meets a harem girl that needs him to go somewhere. At least this guy willingly helps less fortunate people I guess.

Also the following:

Hahahahaha he says his last name first get it OH MY GOD GET IT??!?!?!?!? Hahahahahah this joke is so funny that you'll see it everytime the MC introduces himself hahahahahha last name first hahahahahahh they added an O in front of every word in the fake Japan of the fantasy world so its OEDO instead of EDO Wow this novel has jokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <<less

Just a review showing why I think this is not worth anyone's time. For whoever sees the anime and thinks the novel should be way better it is. But the anime is utter garbage.

First of all the good stuff. So what's the good stuff? I guess that it is an isekai which is really popular right now and that is it!

Now towards the world building. The world is not really complex and gets slightly widened as the time goes on but stays relatively easy. No complicated relations between countries or... more>> groups and only a very basic system of magic.

The MC is some ridiculously lucky bland and uninteresting guy whom gets cheat powers granted buy god and a harem thrown after him.

Spoiler

His body is reinforced and he can use all kinds off magic including rare magic that is mostly unique to a person with his pretty much unlimited mana. Even his language translation skill is a cheat since he hears the magic language in English which he understands while nobody else does granting him an edge in learning new magic. Not that he really uses it

[collapse]

While he has those powers he basically excels in nothing. A true master of the art is always better than him in their respective art but he still defeats everybody and everything with easy due to him being a legendary jack of all traits and his "unique" magic (s). He does not seem willing nor do I see him develop in the future
Spoiler

On several occasions he turned down offers to be taught. He helps one of his companions with training and shows admiration towards her dedication but never tries himself

[collapse]
. On top of that he is a good guy with no redeeming features aside from being lucky. On a side note: the smart phone is only another form of cheat.

Because this is an OP MC this should rather be funny instead of action oriented right? Not really. The start is a bit funny but as time passes it's just gets annoying. No funny puns, no funny tsukomis!

The female cast is not better. They are 1-dimensional beings whom fall for the MC for no apparent reason. The interactions seem often times forced and aside from a single characteristic they just like the MC are boring.
Spoiler

In the beginning of the series the MC "saves" two sisters although it is pointed out later that those two are quite capable themselves so they should not have needed his help at all against 3 city thugs

[collapse]

The writing style is not very good but also not bad either. Pretty basic and short sentences and therefore easy to understand. Developments are not predictable in the long run but only due to his luck/fate that he seems to run into situation after situation for which he has just the right ability bringing him in better and better positions.

After all this ranting it feels like I rated this series too high but in all honesty after a couple chapters it becomes a boring read but if you don't use your brain all the time and turn it down a bit in order to read this it is just a bland story. Nothing that will make you smash your PC on the wall <<less

Indeed, a light-hearted harem, typical tension-less MC. Unfortunately, this falls into the typical trap that often comes with light-hearted stories, there's basically no plot, and since this doesn't bring in anything new, the only thing going for it is admiring the side characters. I'll give it a 3 for at least not having any huge negatives, but it isn't worth reading as anything more than filler.

There is a reason why this series is so popular and will continue to publish chapter after chapter and novel after novel for a very, very long time. It does all the template isekai elements well and creates a main character that is relatable and reliable for the audience to experience. Let me summarize why I gave it this rating:

  • The MC is drastically overpowered. It's to the extent that he is and will be a god eventually and seems like an unstoppable force of nature. Now you may wonder: Why is this even necessary? Well, it's because of this that we don't see elements of "bad" or "hated" isekai novels in the story. None of his friends, "family", or love interests are hurt, he's acknowledged by everyone, and he's not afraid to show off his own power and acknowledges that he is above the norm in this world. These are useful things to keep in mind when trying to keep a novel interesting and continuously engaging since nobody wants to stress during the entire time reading saying "oh why didn't the MC do this " or "why is the MC such a beta" etc.
  • The love interests are a bit forced sometimes but it doesn't hurt the plot at all. If anything, they add a lot of comedic and enjoyable elements to the story by fighting alongside the MC, providing comedic relief, and even side-story-like features to the main story.
  • Some people despise the mecha's being introduced in the latter half of the novel called "Frame Gears" when realistically, we all know these "Frame Gears" are basically Gundam robots but less fancy. I personally did not find them that annoying or irritable, if anything, it was interesting to see how the author used them for the plot. The multiple arcs that covered the creatures called "Phrases" (around 150 chapters or so I think) focused on these mecha's and how they were able to fend off the "Phrases". Truthfully, although it helped add some interesting elements to the story, the introduction of the "Phrases" and mecha's probably ruined the novel for a lot of people since everyone started reading this for the fantasy elements, not to read about an MC fulfilling a delusional Gundam fantasy. Well, overall, just know if you skip these arcs, just remember "overpowered robots destroyed crystal monsters" and you get the general idea of it all.
  • I'm sure we all love two-dimensional villains whether it's consciously or subconsciously. Why? It's because they're so easy to hate and you can predict how they'll meet their demise (execution, prison, revenge, etc.). The introduction of two-dimensional villains just to add a bit of drama to the novel series and to fulfill our inner desires of white knight justice in a sense. We love seeing them get what they deserve and having our MC get off unharmed and completely victorious; in other words, it's a huge guilty pleasure.
  • The world-building is consistent and has connections to each other. The MC is connected to every single nation in existence in some way, shape, or form, and he also seems to have the highest authority that no one wants to go against. It's amazing how the author actually managed to stay consistent with this and allows us to keep track of what is happening when and where.

People have standards when it comes to choosing to read something. Some read for fun, some read to waste time and some read but doesn't care what they are reading. But there is a thin line between barely passable to read and not passable to read. Honestly I don't care what happens to the story as long as it is not skewed in its story or the character behaviors.

One thing most people don't like is, the author just giving the MC everything. This is what you called spoon feeding it.... more>> The MC doesn't have to think really hard and work really hard but he still gets what he wants and be oblivious about it. Some might argue its a harem so its not weird to have many girls flocking to him. Yeah its not weird for a harem but girls flocking to him for no or shallow reasons? Nope give me break find a better plot for it. I won't buy it.

It is suppose to be a fluffy light heart LN. Yeah if the author is good at writing a story but like I said before it is shallow and it won't be fun to read cause you knew. I would gladly read this if I was young and dumb back then but I develop immunity to this kind of LN with little to no plot in mind.

Whether the author wants to mock the genre of isekai or just he was just bad at writing and he don't want to admit it. Who knows? It doesn't mean he can get out of his way to create a nonsensical LN that everyone can make.

People want something they cannot or hard to make novels which is why a few LN/WN out there only make point. Imagine a person making money just by through his own brilliant idea then suddenly many people started to copy him almost plagiarize him but they do worse in doing so instead of being better.

Lastly the Powers of MC is Very powerful that he might just literally be invincible in a sense. Well that was fine and all I like One Punch Man so it takes my interest for a while. But what do we got? We have an impractical LN that just copies the traits of other good LN but they never get the point of it so that's the result: Disappointing. One Punch Man isn't a serious one (not a novel but a story nonetheless) which have OP MC and Kumo desu ga nani ka? An isekai novel with relatively OP MC also not a serious one but they don't excuse themselves as we want to mock this kind of genre cause they aren't serious, No they don't have that shallow excuse nor they make excuses at all.

Conclusion: Please don't deceive people by saying whatever it is in your mind and just throw it at the review. Because people who are unsure on what to do will go to review to find some point in reading or not reading this. Its not worth debating over who's right and who's wrong. Just review with pure analytical skills. Throw some salt on those people who deceives and they will be gone. <<less

A novel with anime/manga adaptation deserves an explanation for its one star rating, I suppose.

It has all the traits that all the isekai novels with OP protagonist (from the start) have, but with a smartphone.

Oh boy.

So if you want a story? Eh. If you want characters? Cardboard cutouts. If you want a setting? Generic medieval fantasy. If you want slice of life? Just watch grass grow or something. It'll be just as entertaining.

Isekai Smartphone is one of the well-known story among isekai genre. Overpowered MC, and harem? These two are used too much in this story. Our MC is naive, the same thing can be said to many characters, which made the writing style also naive, this might make the characters 2d. This novel is a relaxing type of story that has a development that should be in more serious story. That is what I love in this novel.

Our MC might be just like collecting girls from different places, but who cares,... more>> this is harem so don't complain in that. New girls add new developments, and new developments make the plot bigger at the same time keeping it's light hearted story. The MC is OP and he can easily defeat the enemies, but defeating those enemies is not actually the focus of each arc. Rather than "what's happening", "what will happen" is the good thing to read here.

I honestly have to say that this is one of the worst in the isekai tropes. This is not due to the writing, but more the fact that the MC has been made practically perfect, from infinity to all magics, straight down to creating all luxuries for himself. And then the girls all fall in love with him,

agreeing to create a harem for him

while he is oblivious to the girl's affections.

Basically, this is a standardized trope, that kind of made me feel noxious while reading.

Yeah this is your usual Isekai novel with OP character. So how about it? Is it wrong to make a story like this novel right here?

Uh huh I get it, "The story is bland, or no development at all". If you thinking about getting a fast story development or something similar to that then don't read this. It'll make you bored.

I know that everyone have different tastes. So I don't blame 'em for not liking it. But for me, this novel is good for killing time. Slice of life, slow... more>> paced, it's my thing. (Too) OP character, getting a harem easily, I don't mind about those things.

If you think that my taste is bad then so be it. I don't care, because I'm enjoying this novel and no one can blame me for it.

Anyway, to the people who wants a short explanation about this novel then it's basically a "Isekai OP harem thing but it got the slow paced slice of life vibe in it".

Well, a simple-minded me can't rate this novel like the pros so I'll leave the genuine rating to them.

Well, I'm done talking. See y'all at another novel site. <<less
