Liam Sera Banfield is a reincarnator.

He had reincarnated into a fantasy world of magic and swords, but at the time the civilization had already been making advancements into outer space.

The setting takes place in an intergalactic empire, a space opera-like universe where humanoid weapons and spaceships battle.

Liam, who had been reborn into an aristocratic family in a monarchic society, has the ambition to one day become an evil lord.

In his previous life, Liam had unfortunately lost everything and died in despair.

— It’s foolish to live for others.

— I will live for myself.

Keeping those feelings in his heart, he has decided to fulfill his goal, but is instead worshipped as a virtuous ruler due to his difference in values.

Will Liam be able to become an evil lord?

Hmmmmm, really great novel I mean I'll give it 5 stars to push it forward, however there's only one thing that frustrates me.

The author in my eyes never really fleshed out the enemy (in this case the guide) enough to make him a stabilized antagonist.
Spoiler

I mean if your going with the theme of utilizing despair, betrayal, and hatred to increase his power level and having the opposite such as gratefulness, joy, and good will to decrease his power level. When we think of the scale (a.k.a multiple universes) that the guide can influence, then shouldn't he be at a higher power level then current? Idk it just bugged me, plus there is also the fact that he's probably had multiple centuries to perfect creating despair, but seems to make decisions that have very little logical sense and are a bit forced. Meh, it's a light novel I should probably get over it.

Anyways, heres a list of some Guide attributes. I was bored, sue me ?.

1. Able to influence any target of choice from any number of multiple universes.

2. Can influence multiple targets at once.

3. To increase the Guides power (through influenced target), the influenced target has to experience despair of some form. (Invalid until fully proven: This is the best method to increase the Guide's power)

4. To increase the Guides power (through other means), the influenced target must create despair for others. (Invalid until fully proven: This is the worst method to increase the Guide's power)

5. Invalid until fully proven: Must be present or at least viewing the situation to gather power from any source, in this case despair.

6. Invalid until fully proven: Doesn't have to be present or viewing, to have decrease in power from any source, in this case goodwill.

7. Can utilize power to affect viewed or nearby biological beings thought processes. If granted permission can do semi possession.

8. To decrease the Guides power (through influenced target), the influenced target has to 1. Know the Guide exists (which seems sketchy because why would he reveal himself at all?) and 2. Have thoughts of goodwill directly towards Guide and/or give praise directly to Guide. (Invalid until fully proven: This seems to be the best form of multiplied damage against Guide.)

9. To decrease the Guides power (through other means), is for influenced target to positively effect the lives of others. (Invalid until fully proven: This seems to be worst method of damage against Guide)

10. Invalid until fully proven: It seems that goodwill from influenced target will decrease his power in a higher multiplied scale then the amount he would be able to increase from that target, otherwise Guide should be literally unbeatable.

11. Is invisible unless he decides to show himself.

12. Can transport himself (normally) and others (reincarnation) to multiple universes and worlds at any location.

13. Is spectral, meaning he can go through any physical item.

14. Invalid until fully proven: Has lived multiple centuries at the very least

15. Can view the situation of any influenced target.

If you can think of others or want to edit any, PM me I guess, Idk I was pretty bored and this was on a whim.

[collapse]

Also I started reading this novel due to that tag wall as many others did. Possibly a potential way to promote a novel for future note.

This is probably the absolute worst "good" novel I have read to this date. I honestly cannot comprehend how it has 4 stars. I gave to a go because I was bored an had nothing better to do and I swear this novel makes so sense whatsoever. The MC is probably the most insufferable idiot in existence, a classic Japanese Harem protagonist that is somehow surpasses all xianxia MCs in how ret*rded you could possibly get. He doesn't make a single decision that makes sense and gets led around the... more>> nose by literally any character he meets, yet he somehow manages to profit from the situation each time. I.e. He'll buy 300 heavily overpriced spaceships that he can't afford just because the saleslady showed him her underwear, and the next day he'll magically receive money to pay for it. He the most sorry excuse for a ruler in existence, who pretends to be a self-indulgent evil lord yet keeps donating obscene amounts of money (despite being in debt) to random people that he just met. His situation with women is what you would expect from a Japanese cuck protagonist; His goal was to build a harem yet despite being surrounded by transcendental beauties that would die for him and an Android that was built to his desires (Author also emphasized that fact that she had a s*x function), he somehow doesn't like any of them and remains a virg*n for 50+ years.

The world itself is somehow even worse. The author clearly doesn't understand how big a galaxy is. The MC supposedly owns an entire galaxy, which should have hundreds of billions of stars, yet he is perpetually stuck on a single plane and wracked with debt, despite having access to literally limitless resources. His territory was ruined to the point where his parents threw away everything and fled, yet this clown somehow managed to revitalize everything by just lowering the taxes?!?! He literally does nothing that any ordinary, functioning human could not yet is perceived as the reincarnation of Einstein by the very people who were able to overcome humanity's greatest every challenge and conquer space. Furthermore, it is impossible to manage a territory of this scale without technology beyond the grasp of current humanity yet for some s*upid reason everyone in the empire despises AI and we have seen no semblance of a single computer or the internet so far. The story also contains magic for reason, which is never really explained nor even used apart from instances where it conveniently makes the MC strong without any training or fills plotholes.

TLDR; If I wanted to write the faults of this novel it would take my all night, so I'll just say that the MC is a failure of a human being that claims to be evil but is a chronic yes-man and giga pushover that would give all his money if you begged extra hard. The author himself has no concept of how empires work, or how space works, or how ruling works, or how large-scale wars work, yet wrote this anyways. The only thing good about this novel is the quality of translations. <<less

I have read and watched few spoilers

A Short summary: MC is idiot can't see the truth even with his eyes open or even when people come to tell him the truth, he ignores them.

In his previous life, he was a similar idiot and in his 2nd life too, he is an idiot.

This is not a comedy story if you are thinking MC will do bad things and people will misinterpret them and will think that he is a great person NNNNOOONo NO NO MC is an idiot and is very... more>> irritating.

Comedy - Villain - Evil Lord >>>> My Foot!!!, Waste story don't watch if you can't take it past ch3.

It's all same till the end as seen in spoilers and skipped CHP. <<less

Can't get enough of this story. The setting is cool, the characters are fun, the plot is hilarious (tho a bit grim). The mix of grim situations and the MC being a ray of hope on accident (which is itself a grim situation for one char) is fantastic.

This makes my recommend list more than any other story. It's not insanely deep or anything, but for a comedy it has plenty of depth to it, and it's a gold medalist for the misunderstanding comedy trope.

This is a slapstick comedy. The story doesn't take itself serious and neither should you.

As long as you don't expect a serious space adventure, this is a great read. The plot is just there to take you to another joke/gag. The evil empire doesn't really matter, and tension goes away quickly because the MC is too OP.

Now, most of the jokes are formed from misunderstandings, things that wouldn't happen if the MC wasn't so dense and some people might not like it, but like I said, we can't read a... more>> slapstick comedy waiting for smart characters and hard contained logic, else there wouldn't be jokes!

The important part is that I had lots of FUN reading it and I recomend you try it out.

This is similar but better than "To be a power in the shadows", mainly because this one doesn't take itself serious, so if you liked it, this is for you.

To justify the 4 star score, there were two things I didn't like: Too many time skips, as the end of the first ARC the MC was already over 40. Unnecessary gore, since even though it's a 'light' read, there are several moments with brutal and gory parts that doesn't match the tone of the story. It's like watching Itchy and Scratchy from the Simpsons instead of Tom and Jerry. <<less

I highly recommend for less serious readers, more comedy over misunderstandings. I understand that many people give bad ratings because READERS THEMSELVES DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE NOVEL, for example, many details such as the planet's economy or its financial condition are not discussed much because it is not important for them to input in novels lol, in RL the higher your position there are more dealing with politics, especially there helpful AI. Think of CHAT GPT that accurately provides data even you don't care about the process you will see... more>> results, that's how the author imagines in an instant world.

Of course myself hope that some details are covered in the novel but maybe in the sequel because I don't want to spoil comedy gold, I suggest readers go for another title like "It's a Little Hard to be a Villainess of an Otome Game in Modern Society" yes more discussion which is very but the plot of the drama is boring <<less

This novel is a misunderstanding-based comedy which is overall pretty solid, and currently reading up to thr 12th Volume, I have no regret reading it.

It is a very similar with Eminence in Shadow in terms of how the MC got super duper strong through sheer effort and obsession, to the point of craziness. And despite being a villain with no brain, the people around perceives him as virtuous and wise through sheer blessing of the God of Comedy.

A good balance between epic drama (from in-story character's perspective) and head slapping... more>> comedy (from reader's perspective), recommended to read all of it's volumes. <<less

Inconsistent characters

Self contradiction of MC to everything

Everyone is dumb, moron, impulsive, in this novel

World building is terrible,

This novel is for 12 -15 year age group

Authors IQ is below 40, so he/ she did a great work, given circumstances. May be this novel have become best seller if published in stone age / bronze age.

Man, the MC's behavior sure is irrational and unpredictable. There's no way of knowing how he will react to things. He's so inconsistent. Would be fine if his character had any sort of depth, but he doesn't, so you get completely blindsided when he starts acting extreme.

MC is a complete moron. He's soooo dumb, especially when concerning women and having children. "I want a harem" then proceeds to reject every single woman because "they don't fit my standards." He's been made into such a f*cking neckbeard after getting cucked by... more>> his wife in his previous life. Can't help but feel that it's the author imprinting his misogyny and fear of women in his writing.

The 'guide' has got to be the most annoying character ever. I kept hoping he would finally be cut from the novel but the author just doesn't want to get rid of him.

The author constantly forgets details and contradicts information he told us about earlier on in the novels. Once or twice is forgivable, but it happens way too often. Maybe you should stop pulling stuff out of your ass and reread your previous chapters so you stop making s*upid and easily avoidable mistakes?

It's obvious that after a few volumes the author ran out of ideas because the plot pretty much completely halts and everything starts to feel like filler. <<less

It is a while since I was able to find a decent LN of my favourite fantasy isekai genre. And I found it. It is SF universe with spaceships and mecha droids but at the same it can be classified as fantasy too. There is magic, nobles, knights and swords. I like it because main character is quite original. He is not some plain OP MC followed by dull harem but a fellow with complex psyche being manipulated by powerful transcendental beings. At the beginning he looked for me like... more>> kind of an idiot but with time I become convinced that Liam character is not that simple...

I am not sure if I can call "I'm an Evil Lord..." a comedy but it is amusing and from time to time quite funny. So following this approach I could tell that Liam is a pitiful looser who failed living as honest and diligent man. And after reincarnation he become the same looser as an Evil Lord. It is like Winnie the Pooh is trying to be Sauron. Liam tries as much as he can but being an Evil Lord is beyond imagination of a man who is unable to remove Good from his heart. I describe Liam this way because his decisions does not justify to call him s*upid. He is simply blinded by his fixation of being evil and being manipulated by mysterious beings.

Liams actions are drived by his ex-wife complex from his previous life. So in his own mind he is villain but surroundings sees him as noble-minded person. Some of his "s*upid" actions are not reliable but in general a story is quite consistent. I like that Liam is not boring guy who does not harm a fly. He lives in brutal environment so in this story millions of people are killed by him and his subordinates.

The rarity of "I am the evil lord.." is that Liams power comes mostly from his own very hard work. In another stories it is just given from author.

I like that it is a rare story where women are not some innocent non-existant in normal life creatures but normal human beings that can be evil and can sneakily use other people. There is quite interresting harem-like group. Girls are quite well developed by writer. Most of them are hot-tempered nad expressive characters with some screws loosed who are not just in love in Liam. They are some kind of fanatics following their idol. Following his ex-wife complex MC pushes away all beauties trying to get close to him. But the same complex made Liam to fall in his own Evil Lord's trap and finding the beloved one. It appears to be a classic plot of saving a damsel in distress.

It is good that there is some balance and Liam has few male friends.

Main demerit of this LN is very plain and easy approach of writing used by author. With huge jumps in time it makes following this story like reading events log. Universe, events and places of action are described as minimal as possible. I missed a lot of more complex, logical and emotional descriptions. Among other events especially romantic plot gives a feeling of dissatisfaction.

Still it is one of the LN's I like the most.

EDIT:

I decided to lower my grade of a story to 4 because of writing quality. <<less

Evil Lord is a very entertaining read with a good translation. The main character is misunderstanding everyone regularly and everyone else is regularly misunderstanding him. It takes some pretty dark heavy dips but the comedy helps keep the overall tone light. I sincerely hope that we get a light novel version someday where the author adds extra chapters to give more details to the battles and more love to the many interesting side characters.

If you like novels about misunderstandings, this is your thing. Its funny when the MC thinks he is evil but he doesnt even know the "e" in evil lol. He is OP but thats alright cuz I believe the novel aims to be silly. Anyway, this is not a serious novel by any means! Give it a try and you will get a good laugh

This comedic Isekai is all about a tormented good person doing his best to be harsh and villainous, with massive comedic results that harm his tormentor. If you like Sasuga moments, Plot Armor, and dramatic misunderstandings becoming literal In-Universe elements all used in the name of Comedy. Then this is definitely the read for you. I'm 90 chapters in, and I haven't gotten sick of how the author makes even the most absurd setups work out conveniently for our MC!

As many other reviewers have pointed out, this novel is basically "Misunderstandings - The story". I read quite a lot of this in one session and at first some of the situations were actually kind of interesting to me. Sure, the world-building is quite lacking but I was willing to give this thing a shot regardless, hoping for some cool developments down the road and looking forward to the misunderstandings being resolved...

However, after reading a decent amount of chapters, I have one big problem with this novel: The lack of... more>> satisfaction. This is because of three reasons: Firstly, the protagonist's personality totally contradicts what people think of him and pretty much everything he does is interpreted incorrectly by outsiders (somewhat reminiscent of Overlord but done way worse and with too much focus on it). This leads to him achieving great results whenever he does something but the fact that he himself never realizes the truth is just frustrating. And this frustration totally overshadows any sort of comedy of the situation for me.

The second reason is that the side characters and especially the villains just don't carry any weight and lack development. So even if he defeats someone, it's just not satisfying to me because the build-up was insufficient. And if you combine this with him beating the villain essentially through sheer luck or without even realizing it then it's even worse.

Reason 3: It doesn't seem like the misunderstandings ever get cleared up. It's just sort of establisbed as a given at some point so beware: Should you decide to read this you will be trapped in an endless vortex of characters doing the wrong things so badly that they somehow succeed instead. And at the same time they also somehow look like they were actually doing everything correctly from the start... If THAT sounds funny to you and you think you could enjoy it then you might like this novel! For me however, this was just kinda painful.

The story also didn't feel like it was going anywhere. The main character might get some new things or make connections with new people but none of that takes the story in a new direction. Many characters are introduced but then seemingly never play an important role.

The icing on the cake for me were the events of Volume 3:
Spoiler

Where he decides to marry another noble to take over her status and have fun "breaking" her but in the end she just genuinely falls for him and everyone is somehow happy. It's just so ridiculous that I can't even laugh about it.

Now I'm afraid that if I continue reading this it will either have no romantic progress betweem them at all or it will have some but it won't be enjoyable anyway since the two of them would just misunderstand each other, making it all meaningless...

[collapse]

Anyway, rant over. Maybe this story is just totally incompatible with my sense of humor... Perhaps you can get enjoyment out of it though. But seriously don't read it if you're looking for a satisfying story. <<less

One of my favorite novels to date. Its fun, serious and silly and the same time. This misunderstandings are real and the lengths the MC goes to be "evil" are so seriously sweet and kind it hurts. The only bad thing is that is this is the MC idea of evil then he is basically a saint which makes him feel a little too "goody two shoes." Its still a fun read and I am always waiting for more chapters.

Try it out, you shouldn't be disappointed as long as you... more>> remember its not a serious story. Its meant to be silly. <<less

A nice story from the writer of 'sevens' and 'otome world tough for mobs', where the theme is 'misunderstandings', the MC is a super idiot OP character, his past life experience being the good guy had a terrible conclusion, which made him doubt the nature of 'being good', but he remains true to his 'good' nature while aiming to be an evil lord.

what is the attractive point in this novel is the MC naivety and lack of evil lords know-how while living in a universe filled to the prim with... more>> as*hole evil nobles, although some parts are forced (the don't seem to, the are) it is still funny to read. <<less

half-assed

I expected more seeing the reviews but I was disappointed once I started reading the novel.

Some would say that is similar to "Overlord" or "To be a power in the shadows" but the similarity ends with "misunderstandings" tag. Obviously I was expecting no logic-sense or some developments that are too convenient or inconvenient to the MC related to a "Comedy" novel and there are but the premise is that, not the worldbuilding or the development of the characters along with the history and the comedy in it (that is present... more>> in the other novels I mentioned before) .

Anyways is not an awful novel is a slapstick comedy, it can be enjoyed :D.

But for someone that seeks something a little bit more complex or developed, I don't recommend it. <<less

Pretty good so far, MC thinks he's evil while actually doing good around him.
Don't expect space opera levels of how the universe works though, it's clearly here for plot convenience.
