Here to give this novel justice after reading the manga adaptation, it's good. People give it bad scores for many reasons and some of them are valid in their own way, but not quite. Here's some of them:

The MC didn't become a chad overnight. He didn't speak with people because he was told not to, not because he's doesn't know how to speak. Naturally, at the start he doesn't know how to express emotions properly and acts quite dryly and doesn't pick up many social ques, but he's a quick... more>> learner, he's compassionate and easily relates with other people, so that part changes with some time

Hanabi is a master of manipulation, she will do anything, use anyone, she'll stoop as low as possible, all for the sake of achieving what she wants. That's why
Spoiler

it's really easy to wrap some mildly twisted jealous girl without any actual friends around her finger with sweet words to false accuse the FL of bullying

[collapse]
, she's been learning for almost a decade and a half to do just that

As for the MC being more athletic than he should be, he's been nothing more than his ex's s*ave for years, he's been bringing her anything she wants, doing everything she wished for, walked her home no matter how far it was,
Spoiler

in one of the scenes he ran in the rain from his hote to the station to bring her an umbrella and was told to wait in the rain for an hour while she had lunch with her friends

[collapse]
, I'm sure he's been exhausted to the point of collapsing many times so he had to get more athletic to tough it out if he didn't want to collapse on the spot

The FL and the side characters do feel a little bland because of how simple they are but that's not necessarily bad, especially for an author that's just starting out and trying their hand at writing. Also, the FL is quite good, it's clear fdom the story that she looks at people as actual people because she pays attention to them, she'll decisively support you through your toughest times without fail, she'll treasure you without forgetting that you're your own person. All in all, she's a keeper

The s*upid ahh teacher and the school, no commen. There is no redemption for them in a million years

At the end of the day, even with some clunky moment here and there, the story is good. I'm sure the author will keep improving so I'm looking forward to their next creation. <<less

What a powerful first chapter! That single chapter alone, where MC finally dumped his control freak overbearing childhood friend, makes me go read the rest of the available chapters. Very quickly, I find out that the control freak overbearing childhood friend do has a VERY VALID REASON why she is doing what she has done to the MC. And considering the hyper-competitive Japanese high school dating scene in JP novels, I can really sympathize.

The first 10 chapters shows the calm before the storm, the MC's life after the separation. And... more>> of course how it feels to finally comes out of the shadow of his popular and beautiful kouhai childhood friend. Then the story goes to the sh*tter, for the MC of course, and to the delight of the readers like me. Hint: See that 'Bullying' and 'Yandere' tags above.

Sorry, I am going to read this at the source from now on. For everyone else, this is a really recommended novel if you like bloodbath. <<less

This is pretty unique. I've read upto 19 but so far I didn't find any valid reason why the bit*h abused MC to the point you'd consider it torture which previous review said about.

I'm loving the MC cause he's pretty different from the ususal beta limp di*k MCs who just get beaten for like literally anything like accidentally seeing pantsu or walking in on changing etc etc by heroines. I like How he's growing every chapter. Overall its a good read, gives satisfaction. I'll recommend this if you want a... more>> MC who's got balls to stand up for himself. <<less

I lost count of how many times this series made my eyes roll with how incredibly unrealistic it is. Dude turns into a chad overnight and has overcome the odds in his way in the most convenient ways ever.

The only thing that felt real was the theme of males being abused.
Spoiler

there was a point where the ex tried to expose him and he tries to clap back saaying he was actually the one that was abused. But the people went "a male getting abused? No way." and his life was almost ruined. This stuff happens so much irl

[collapse]

So yeah shoutout to the author for tackling a very real problem in our society. Johnny Depp would be proud. Doesn't change the fact that it's mediocre, writing is all over the place and the ending felt lacksluster but I would still recommend this one.

Wow! So much potential. The first chapter really touched my emotions, especially the feelings of pain. The MC was abused and oppressed by his Yandere gf because she did not want others to know how "perfect" he was (kind, handsome, and athletic). If the story was a song, its timbre would begin discordant and resolve into a pleasant and harmonious waltz. I was thoroughly pleased about how real the MC felt, except, of course, his hidden athletic talent that was somehow maintained even though he did occupy himself with any... more>> sports...

Anyway,
the development of the Yandere tag and the "calm before the storm" vibe of the first 10 chapters were exquisite! The side characters still feel a bit flat, but they've just been introduced and I expect that this author will succeed in taking their story to new heights. Great job breaking the mold of MCs and abusive tsundere relationships (although this case was truly a Yan-dere instead of a Tsun-dere).
It's satisfying to see a TRUE Yandere antagonist for once.

From what I read 4.7 stars. I'm interested! <<less

It's a short story romance drama about a guy who breaks free from his abusive ex

The good thing about this novel Hanabi's (the ex, childhood friend and antagonist) abusive behavior is something that really happens in real life: isolating your from friends, constantly disrespects you, downright you to make you think you're less than you actually are and destroying your self steem.

Of course there are moments over the top. Some of them you accept but there are others really exagerated.

Spoiler

Like Hanabi having a group of "henchmen" or the one otaku character that hates the popular kids from her class but do everything that Hanabi (the most popular girl of the school). It's even more unbelievable that MC, who doesn't exercise, beats the captain of the athletic club in the sports festival.

[collapse]

It's funny how the only character that boils my head, isn't MC's ex, but
Spoiler

the classroom teacher who deals a bullying situation in a worst possible way and nothing happens to him/, her. A teacher that falselly acuses a student of bullying would be fired. It's even worse when you find out at the ending that the guys who kidnapp and tied up MC alone in the woods only got suspension, this is an expeled situation.

[collapse]

The ending is rushed and the dialogue between MC and FL is s*upid.

Spoiler

They think Hanabi did all of that harass**ent because she loved MC "too much" to care about what he thinks and feels. What kind of lesson you want to pass? That wasn't love, Hanabi is possessive and selfish. She has the narcissist patterns, she never loved MC, she only loves herself

Translator here, thought I would write my own review for the series.

The story, to be frank, is a bit all over the place. It seems like the author had one core idea in his head (that being the protagonist having an abusive childhood friend) and didn't really know how to utilize that to create a story. Because of that, there's a lot of idea that do not feel well executed. And with those half-baked ideas, the story ultimately feels rushed, as if the author is cycling through all the different... more>> ideas that pop into his head. The finale felt like the author just wanted some way to conclude the story, to the point where it felt like a parody of itself.

This extends to the characters too, most of whom don't get a lot of screentime and therefore don't feel relevant to the story at all. The protagonist and the two main heroines feel pretty barebones and while they do have some good scenes, they aren't too compelling.

The prose aren't too complex, with much of the narration being dedication to objective descriptions rather than raw emotions, so much of the emotion associated with the story is pretty much lost. Hanabi's manic dialogue is probably the star of the show here since seeing how crazy she can get can be pretty thrilling.

Ultimately, this story is pretty lackluster, but short enough to where you can pick up it an afternoon and be done with it. <<less

I really like this webnovel, not gonna spoiled for you guys but better read it!!

I really wish MC will get back together with his ex for the first 16 chapter that I have read, cause all she have done is for him, so that other girl will not notice how cool, handsome and athletic MC is, just that the way she did is really making MC hating her more and more.

For now I'm hoping he will ended up going together again with his cute ex yandere.

Starts off really well, but then that's it, it becomes just predictable and boring after that.

It's great that the MC recovers and gets popular but the way it happens is too much of a fantasy, he cuts his hair and suddenly he's the most handsome and popular guy in the class, then even though he never runs seriously for years, in his first try, he breaks records and win over the whole track team without even trying, he even makes fun of people stretching as if that's wrong lol

Then, to... more>> clear up the fake accusations of bullying on his friend, he just takes some SS of a chat to school and shows it, before anyone can confirm stuff, everyone just takes it as real and even the teacher acts like a dumb ass and accepts it as absolute, the teacher is bad but who the f*ck accepts everything without looking it up in a bullying case like that, everyone just acts as if the MC is suddenly the most reliable, handsome, talented, athletic and cool person in the world, it's too much of a pipe dream...

The ex doesn't even get a chance of redemption, she's just a template, it could be so much better if the author developed her and they could understand each other, but nah, she's just a excuse for the MC to be a hero =/

I must confess that I was hoping that the MC just got into a coma at the beginning of the story and everything was just happening on his mind, that would explain everything... <<less

TL;DR: Below average. Not something that I'd really recommend to anyone though, it's a bit generic despite the premise. Stick around for the yandere ex-girlfriend.

(Note that I do spoil the early chapters in this review, just a heads up if you're interested in reading it blind.)

First off, just wanted to say the translator really does a great job with their work. As far as I can tell, this was their first project and they're doing it fantastically without the help of an editor or proofreader.w.

Now onto my actual... more>> review: this novel is pretty overrated.

It's far from horrible, but it isn't really that good either. It's some solid wish fulfillment taking place in modern-day. Personally, I like it, but then again my taste is pretty tr*shy anyways :p

The idea of our protagonist having been in a long-term abusive relationship (as the title already spells out to you) is a really interesting premise and I wish more literature went out of it's way to depict those kinds of relationships in fiction. However, the way it's implemented is kind of... eh.

Hanabi (the childhood friend) is cartoonishly evil for no apparent reason, there's a reason that this novel has the yandere tag. She's psychotic and obsessive in such an overt way around the protagonist that I wouldn't be surprised if the author said she brutally mu*dered her own parents. Then again, in my opinion she's still the best character in this novel.

Our main character is devoid of any discernible personality. I mean, I realized he wasn't really meant to be a fleshed-out character the moment he broke up with Hanabi just because he had become emotionally exhausted by her. Sure, it was nice to see him stand up for himself, but that isn't how overcoming abuse functions in real life. It paints a pretty bad picture when saying that all someone needs to do to get out of that kind of situation is to break up with their abuser, especially when they still go to the same school and live in the same area.

It isn't like real-life abusers need to do any of the crazy stunts that Hanabi does to make their victim stick around, I'm sorry to say I expected less crazy yandere antics and more genuine emotional manipulation. Anyways, our protagonist shows no trace of having been emotionally abused and socially isolated since, what, third grade? Probably earlier than that, but that's the earliest mention of our protagonist's toxic relationship with Hanabi. Well, I guess it helps that he's already hot and athletic, he just hadn't realized it.

Spoiler

Side note, can someone please explain to me how this guys is suddenly the fastest guy of all time just because he decided to actually "try" instead of running slowly on purpose? Author, I don't know what to tell you, but that isn't how physical sports work. That's like saying someone suddenly became a global top 100k player of osu! on their first day because genetics. There's a reason why people practice track and field for hours every day just to keep improving even by a little bit, having our main character just start out as the best in the school without earning it and without any explanation is a bit lame :p

[collapse]

As for other notable characters, there's the friend character and the romantic interest who are both so two-dimensional that I can't even remember their names even though I literally read this novel less than 30 minutes ago. Friend is like any friend character in a JP novel, nothing much I can say. Romantic interest is as nuanced as a tomadachi.

Welp, that's all I've got for now. Will come back and edit if my thoughts change. <<less

*chef's Kiss*

I highly recommend this story for those who are curious about the sufferings and dealings of an emotionally abusive relationship.

Spoiler

This was an amazing story, I loved it. It really showcases on how serious an abusive relationship can be and how far someone can go off the deep end. Yukishiro, Ichinose's new love interest, is such a strong girl even while she was being targeted by Hanabi with someone else holding the knife (quite literally, since that girl was literally cutting herself to fram Yuki for bullying).

If I had to say a few things against the story though. I think it's kinda strange that these guys fawned over Hanabi to the point that they went through with her plan in the outside class arc. I mean, it was said that Hanabi was a pretty figure and was noticed. But frankly to me, especially in the beginning, Hanabi was basically just as much of a ghost as Ichinose was. But I suppose that whole thing was also a nod to the fact that abuse against Males is often overlooked or disregarded in most case without proper evidence. You have no idea how much I was screaming at my screen for Ichinose to take screenshots of the texts Hanabi was sending him for a rainy day. And during that Arc I'd say it was pouring... If they believed the screenshots he took of the skype call with that other girl, they definitely would've believed the text messages between him and her. He easily could've pulled a Uno Reverse on him and he missed it. In fact he could've just sent those pictures to her parents and to the school right after they broke up to basically cripple her before she could've done anything in the first place. Another thing *semi* against the story is how the school handled the whole situation. They asked no questions and gobbled up everything that girl was saying n sh*t and gaslighted Yuki into confessing. Especially that teacher, she didn't even question it or anything, she jumped right on it. 'Considering the classroom' my ass. She even tried bullshitting her way out of it when confronted about it after Yuki's innocence was proven. That teacher needs to be investigated and fired immediately. I damn near suspected she was in on it with Hanabi.

That arc in general was kinda head scratching too. I mean, that girl was far too trusting and immediately spilled the entire plan about what she did and was planning on doing to a random shmuck that messaged her on Skype. Ichinose was also very clever in getting the other girl to spill the beans and give him the suspect's SNS by saying if they were so successful in spreading bullsh*t about Yuki it won't take much for him to spread bullsh*t about them. Cancel Culture is a very powerful thing.

The ending was kind of strange, but logical. But it's a short story so I understand. I think they should've given us a bit more information about the after story though. Like what happened to Hanabi after she got out of the hospital and what happened to the other guys. I'm guessing Hanabi probably becomes a introvert or even a shut in after all that. That girl has some serious reflecting to do and I doubt her parents will let her off easily even with a broken foot. Frankly in any other situation she could be arrested for her actions not only for assault and kidnapping, but all the emotional damage she caused to Ichinose, the girl she pressured to frame Yuki, and of course Yuki herself. Hanabi needs some massive therapy sessions, she and Ichinose both do. Well, Yuki is probably the perfect Therapist for Ichinose so he's probably fine.

A 4* for me.

I literally waited for more than a year, then I get only a few chapters with an ending as if telling a moral lesson. It looked good at the start but I felt that it was messy somewhere along c20 or so. The ending felt abrupt for me. Like literally it was like reading an elementary story/passage that had a moral lessson in the end that summarized the entire story.

Don't expect much, but I guess it passed out as a rather straightforward story with regards to the... more>> idea it ended with. <<less

I meant to give it 3 stars not 4, can’t seem to change it. Oh well. I’ll stop trying to edit that, since the translation quality is up there.

Predictable story. Nothing really surprising occurs. You can read (almost) any chapter title, and easily write a chapter summary before actually reading the chapter. Even so, I had fun reading this one. Plenty of “Ha!” and “Oh, snap!” moments, plus the numerous facepalm moments.

I’ve read the whole thing 3 times now, and have concluded that the reviewer who claimed that the ex-gf... more>> had a ‘very valid reason’ (it was typed all in caps) for what she did to the MC, was confusing this with some other similarly themed story.

Some of the raw chapters have already been deleted by the author. I don’t know whether or not the rest will be.

Series has been picked up by a publisher, so a proper light novel adaptation should be released eventually. <<less

I read to chapter 3 and then skimmed the rest but I can still tell you (no offense) that this novel is surprisingly horrible. Literally no plot. It misses almost everything a story actually needs. No world building. No plot development. No character development. Nothing. It's just a self-insert wet dream. Not hating on anyone who likes the story I just think its very not good at all.

(My reasons for rating this very poorly with mild spoilers ahead just warning in case)

...

Watching the girlfriend break up with the... more>> guy was as satisfying as watching paint dry. We don't even know whats happening then boom the girlfriend is talking sh*t about him and then he breaks up with her. In the first two lines of the story. The old girlfriend is toxic just for the sake of adding conflict to the story. It's like those wuxia novel characters that get offended because your breeze when passing by him was too windy or some sh*t like that. The yandere tag doesnt make sense because it feels like she doesnt even like him. The abusive relationship is presented very poorly. We just see her talking tr*sh about the guy for literally no reason other than to make us hate her. The guy doesnt even feel like a real person. Unless he was a masochist, which reading the story it's very clear he's not, why the hell did he put up with her for so f*cking long. Like it literally makes no sense. Anyways, after the guy breaks up with her he gets a haircut and suddenly everyone wants to be around him.
Spoiler

Apparently, his bangs were hiding his super hot face and now girls fall to the ground with an O-face when they see him (slight exaggeration but not really) and guys literally copy his f*cking haircut (ch25). Forgot to mention that everyone also apparently wants to sit with him at lunch now. Yes, this is all because of a f*cking haircut.

[collapse]

And
Spoiler

His old girlfriend got a girl to say that his new romantic interest was bullying her and the reason why the girl went along with the ex's ridiculous scheme was because "I like seeing the popular kids fight." She even wanted to cut her wrists to escalate the situation. Like these characters do not feel like real people at all.

[collapse]

Overall, the story just doesn't make any sense at all. <<less

It's great.... man seeing him breaking up with her was satisfying as watching diy crafts!

"I can't even understand how I got together with you" (* insert annoying barks and buzzing)

"Fine then, let's break up"

... more>> Then I was like "ohhhhh boom that hurtz" and then I read it again for more pleasure and was like (* hands in the air) "Music please"

Just reading the 1st chapter was already good the moment I laid my eyes on those 1st to 3rd sentences.

I love how MC decided that it's over once and for all but I think it would have been much better if it was earlier.I salute his patience but just like the MC everyone has a limit and you won't know what's behind that line so you should be careful not to cross it. Their relationship was really toxic, and I'm sure everyone that read it knows what I'm talking about. I mean they both have their own fault, like how MC didn't end it the moment that the harassment and insults started getting too far, he should have dragged the girl and shake her shoulders to snap out of it, she's too obsessed (yandere tag!!) Say what she's doing is wrong, I mean he said that the girl didn't want him to cut his hair in third grade... like wut?! But it won't change the fact that he's the victim, like why would you say that the one who got scammed is the one at fault not the scammer?

Also the girl, the most fault here lays with her, she should have been proud she's got a good boyfriend like those 3 in One coffee (handsome, kind, athletic) but nooo instead she insulted him, tormented him saying his useless, pathetic, and an idiot. Thaaa!! Why would you date him if he's like that? Because she knows what she's saying isn't true she's afraid he'll get taken away... well understandable some people are also scared like that, but she's taking things too far. Since she's good, she's above, she should have reached her hand out and pull the one below, not bringing them down further. My gosh MC even had that thing where he gets scared the moment he hears his ringtone indicating the girl is being whatever she is and is doing yandere things again... kinda feel what MC feels, when hearing he's ringtone, I get scared, well just a bit hearing my ringtone in my gc knowing there's another assignment or deadline approching, specially when I'm doing my thing and finally got to relax (manga, anime, novels) haha

Though it's a fun read!! Author hasn't posted chapter 26 onwards yet... I hope it didn't got dropped since it's good!!

Worst Yandere story ever. Never once in the story did his Yandere exgf act dere for him. She's just a straight up obsessed & abusive girlfriend that shows everyone that she'll stop at nothing to get the MC back.

The story is about an MC who dumped his foul mouthed, abusive and obsessive girlfriend, there's no comeback nor the MC plans to get into a relationship with her to again. He just f*cking hate her guts. The Ex gf was the antagonist of the story, bunch of school dramas and her... more>> trying to ruin the MC's newfound friendship and love.

So far, I'm enjoying reading this. I can sort of relate to the MC in a way coz I myself, was in a toxic relationship in the past (not a romantic one but a platonic one)

I like how he took the initiative to break away from his abusive ex and be able to be better after being away from her. Its probably due to my own experiences that I couldn't help but feel really happy that the MC for being able to do the things he wasnt able to... more>> do when he was around his ex.

I dislike the fact there are some people who are actually trying to defend the ex for her toxic behavior. Like no, there is definitely no excuse for her actions towards the MC and she has no right to gaslight and control the MC to her liking. He is a human, not a toy.

If this story ends with him getting back together with his horribly toxic ex, I would rage. Even if the ex does "change" for the better, it would never really repair the years of abuse he went through, and would also make a bad example for readers who are currently in toxic relationships themselves and want to leave, and would be a huge slap in the face to those who actually managed to escape toxic relationships so I hope the author doesn't go that route. <<less

Boringly predictable. I was hoping to be surprised and have an unconventional story where the yandere develops as a character and the MC and her end up together but nope. Predictably at the end the nice boring girl and the MC seem likely to get together. The yandere seems sorry but so what, its not satisfying to just move on. Pretty fun, short read up to c25 which is when the original author seems to have hiatused it or so. MC ditches extremely toxic FMC and it's about him making friends, growing his self confidence after years of abuse, and budding friends and romance with classmates (specifically 1 guy and 1 girl).

I dislike him not reporting the ex GF for what she did but like the premise and fun read and think it's an enjoyable romance drama with a MC growing from his cathartic breakup. I hope to finish one... more>> day and also enjoy him releasing his full potential and also liked his kind demeanor to everyone. <<less
