I picked this up after seeing all the reviews and figured it would be a good way to read my day away. My first sit down with the series had me laughing constantly. It has now been less then 24 hours and I have completely caught up with the series and I feel like an addict looking for my next fix. I will be the first to admit that this series does not conform with what I normally read and I have never felt the need to recommend a series... more>> other then to give a good vote. However this time, I felt it was my duty to give this series more props, in hopes that others will enjoy it as much as I have <<less

It's a huge leap away from the typical cultivation maniac novels. Granted, all the typical Xianxia troupes are in there, but they've been altered and fit really well into this new entertainment world. It's a really funny, action-packed, face-slapping novel. It's been a wonderful (binge) read until the current chapter, and I'm looking forward to a 1000 chapters more of this sick Dope.

But after I read it, this novel keeps surprise me over and over. This novel is far better than most works you have ever read. I'm not going to say this is the best, but it has its own charm that makes you keep waiting for the next chapter. You can read this more than once and you are not gonna get bored.

It's the same "I'm inside a game world" and "leveling up until OP" as usual but with an entertaining twist: the main character wants to be a "people" and cheats all the time in order to become a celeb.
Spoiler

@c65 he's not famous enough for paparazzi but he's getting there.

I keep thinking about this book even though I've read tens of novels since I stopped at the most recent chapter. I'm not sure what it is that keeps IRAS at the back of my mind but my guess is that it's because of the unique cast of characters that you won't ever forget about and the many shenanigans the main character gets up to.

There are many moments where I have no clue about the pieces of Chinese culture that the main character may preach about but even then I... more>> still remember being in anticipation for the mc's clever audience manipulation, dramatic showdowns, and scolding. Who can forget the scolding!

This may be the novel about Zhang Ye rising to the top of entertainment, but I feel totally like an audience member cheering for my favorite celebrity when it comes down to it.

There were many emotion-peeking moments for me during this novel but it would be much better for you to experience them yourselves instead of me telling you about them.

(thanks to the translator and youtube channel who showed us what the MC was plagiarising) it helped set the mood for some parts. <<less

Alot of people here says that it has racism. Do you see the tag s"nationalism", "racism"?If you dont like these tag, dont read it from the start.

I love this novel. Why?MC is op, funny, from the parallel world, alot of face slapping, no harem, emotional moment and most importantly MC is not coward. He is in parallel world that is different from our world so he can do whatever he want. Why not?

MC is racist but this is his personality. In reality, there are some people like him, right?

If you... more>> want funny novel, read this. Enjoy it. You will enventually become Zhang Ye fan.??? <<less

I ignored all the bad reviews, started reading, was fun atfirst. ~300-400 was very enjoyable 4*. I teared up, I laughed, I got excited and pumped.

Then the plot keeps repeating itself, someone offends MC, MC offends person and so on....

That was still okay, but then the MC starts becoming a hypocrite, doing the same things the bad guys do, abusing power.

... more>> The romance part is pure bullshit, borderline assault, no substance, all the love interests are big b**bed, have divine beauty and most are 30+. I just skimmed through it.

The part I dropped it was when the novel became political. Pure propaganda when japanese delegates come for making good relations and he just starts dissing them cuz guess what, the chinese dont like the japanese. Oh btw this has also been done before when he dissed korean celebs, but that was still personal. This was total inconsideration for your country's diplomatic situation.

Registered an acc just to post this review. I googled that this novel was banned cuz author was copy pasting 'let it go lyrics' in later parts. lmao <<less

I rate this 2 stars only because it has lots of chapters and gets translated often, the story and setup of the whole thing tho is 1 star mediocrity, the MC is basically the king of Plagiarism, he invents or does nothing whatsoever by himself, everything he does is plagarised from "our earth" into the "new earth" the MC now lives on, and ofc he has the usual s*upid magic gaming system where he gets capsules that make him smart/fit/etc, so basically he is a pill popping pacman.

Even when he... more>> gains superior mental/physical stats, like when he gets really smart at mathematics he still never uses his own new superior smarts to do anything, he still relies on plagiarism of other peoples work he introduces as his own by using a nice magic memory capsule that lets him remember stuff he previously read.

The story is complete and utter copy and paste from start to finish, all that changes is the place he is at and the peoples names he confronts, also people in specific jobs/positions seemingly are all mentally ret*rded idiots that abuse their positions even people who appear on camera in front of millions who would never do that because.... well they are being recorded and watched by millions, but nope, not here, here they are all morons to benefit the MC's self importance/ego stroking...

There are quite a few funny moments, however those are spread thin over far far far too many chapters, also this has to be THE biggest filler material novel I have read to date, as he deals with his friends/fans they ALL comment on him online and you end up with 1/2 or nearly a whole chapter of people basically stating lines such as "wow hes so amazing, I cant believe how amazing he is", "just how amazing can he be", with his enemies doing the same copy/paste waffle only negatively...

Also pretty dumb that his later girlfriend helps him a lot, puts up with his major problems and has no requests for him, basically she comes across as his mother not girlfriend the way she dotes after him, yet when she makes 1 simple request to not smoke, and after all the sh*t and hassle he has put her through, his reply is basically "nah to hell with that", so yeah, great MC there.. <<less

Hilarious and entertaining, gives you a crash course on Chinese pop (and historical) culture. It's a unique novel where the MC gains literature/creative prowess rather than purely physical/martial abilities. Characters are all well-developed in the story, including his future wife (I'll leave you guessing). Some smutty portions, but a lot of it is censored out in the translations (unless you read the mandarin ones).

I get that a lot of people rate it lower due to lack of cultural understanding. It's hard to appreciate the nuances if you don't know mandarin. Reminds you of some Gintama jokes that are hyperlocal to Japanese only. That's why you'll see reviews where people either love it or hate it.

What's odd is commentators blasting the MC for not "acting like an adult" and excessive facesmacking (putting someone in his place). I'd say that's an extremely foolish and hypocritical comment.
We're often told to "act like adults" to de-escalate a situation and resolve things amicably, because we are POWERLESS. If you have the ability to right wrongs on the spot with much fewer consequences, you can and absolutely should do so.
The same detractors of this novel have no problems lauding superhero novels where a superhero violently engages a villian. I don't see detractors of IRAS complaining why these superheroes didn't attempt to TALK DOWN the villains before beating them down. Maybe the villain has a history of mental disorder, a broken family, etc? Heck, even Batman often tried to reason with the villains first!

Agreed, it probably doesn't help that the MC is big on nationalism and bashes a lot of neighboring countries like Japan/Korea/India/etc. But you can't deny that a lot of the author's points about other cultures are quite valid. I'd refute some of the low ratings with spoiler comments.
Spoiler

Stereotypes are part of the joke, all the top comedians you see on TV do it (Chapelle, Bill Mahr, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, John Oliver, Russell Peters, etc). If you can't find humor in that, then you have NO BUSINESS reading/watching comedy. Japanese/Koreans are xenophobic, Indians are gender biased and treat their women badly, and there are many countries actively trying to exploit the Chinese entertainment market (just like the Western countries' movie industries are doing now). The author also pokes fun at plenty of bad actors within the Chinese community too, from an over-reliance on nepotism and connections, to heavy corruption.
It's to the point that the book got temporarily banned multiple times by China's SARFT. If you think China's censorship bureau is a beacon of moral justice then you need to get your head checked.
So GET OVER YOURSELF.

The MC is not a hero, and has never proclaimed himself as such. He knows he has a useful power and exploits it as much as possible. He has his own set of ideals and justice, and finds humorous ways to enforce it. No one thinks Light Yagami from Death Note was a hero for his ruthless killings, but everyone loved him for it.

I'll put out a disclosure that I'm an overseas Chinese (neither born nor raised in China). I've read BOTH the chinese and english versions so I can relate to it better. I'll give kudos to the translator, since I found quite a few of his translations to be pretty spot on.

The story really gets you hooked till you read like ~700-800 chapters in and get tired of the repetitive storyline. It basically goes like this: people look down on MC, MC shows off his plagiarism skills, people praise the MC to the skies, MC spouts a famous poem, and the cycle repeats itself. I got tired of how all the antagonistic characters keep on popping up to look down on the MC just to give the MC the moment to show off again. The romance between the MC and MF... more>> is pretty sweet and there are developments, but the MC is also a typical pe*vert, so I have no special comments about his relationships. On the other hand, the way the MC uses famous poems in the storyline is really smooth and it is the only reason that I am still reading this. Read for the poems if nothing else! There is so much culture and history to be learned from these poems! <<less

I enjoy this novel at first, it was entertaining until it eventually dawn on me, that there was no visible character growth. This character is unjustifiable arrogant, and when you realize everything he really has is just due to the help of the system and plagiarizing somebody else hard work, as well as a lack of maturity I started to dislike the novel.

As a reader who has hooked on this novel from the start, I feel that it's a must for me to criticize this novel as a whole. I Just can't stand this novel nor this MC anymore. WTH is wrong with this author, trying to boost his "China" to a whole new dimension while degrading other countries like shit. Everyone knows that in all parts of the world there are Chinese citizens that have no problem with international culture, yet, he acts like he's the only one that has the... more>> brain. The story is too focused on the MC who has no talent but "Patriotism", and it's downright horrifying to the point of an utter pile of garbage. One particularly interesting thing to note is that from the start, the author will keep your opinion change bit by bit with the negative information of other countries, then right after that, he'll attack them with his "Patriotism". Admittedly, it's good to have a positive heart and intent for your country and there are countless ways other than calling names and beating people. Moreover, in this novel, only the MC has a quick-witted mouth and every other people will just wait patiently for him to stomp on them. We all know that every country has a dark and white side, but the author thinks that only China is taken advantage of while all the other countries are acting like their owners, which is not the even truth at all. Overall, this novel started good but in overtime, this author's one-sided mindset gets nerve-wracking to the point of being annoying. So, I would only recommend to those people who are immune to racism and wants to have their self-esteem "raised" in their fantasy world. <<less

There is a formula which gets repeated often in Xianxia where the main character is harassed by a stronger foe (authority) and after defeating them, he moves onto another field only to fight another stronger foe. It may be done intentionally as a nod to how cliche Xianxia's tend to develop, I personally think it adds to the comedy but it can be seen as a demerit. If you can get past that it's quite an enjoyable read despite there being some literature being impossible to translate from chinese to... more>> english as characters in chinese have multiple meanings. The tags are all accurate and the racism is there so if you don't like that it's not for you. It's not noticeable at first as it feels more like nationalism but it gets more apparent the more you read. Overall it's a fun read with flaws like any other novel but it the biggest plus side is that it implements modern and classic parts of chinese culture. <<less

Though there were amusing moments, as of right now, I am not sure what the hype is all about. The general pattern in the story seems too obvious, but this is only up to the radio host section. It might change after that. Not saying patterns in stories are bad, but if its this obvious it makes it seem too repetitive. Hopeful, he doesn't stick to just poetry and move on to some other forms of entertainment (music, movies, etc).

It has a lot of potential but the humor doesn't do... more>> much for me. The MC's character is pretty interesting. His temper is amusing. The "shock" or "reaction" chapters gets a little old after having it too often. It makes me feel like I'm reading Martial God Asura's reaction chapters. (2/5 @ ch 78)

Update: After Ch 78, the story becomes much better and very interesting. Although the character development is a bit lacking, the characters are interesting enough to carry it. There are two things I dislike about it though. One is the online comments, which makes it feel repetitive and the other is how certain situations seems too ridiculous. There were also some minor inconsistencies in the novel, but they can be ignored. (3.5/5 @ ch 297)

Spoiler

Ch 1161 (Raw) : It has its ups and downs. The situation itself is ridiculous. Instead of having these "Game" theme to the story, it is like a huge cheat or his whole life is on easy mode. He hardly run out of reputation points and can increase his luck on demand.

The MC's personality becomes terrible and "face smacking" becomes overly used. He is possessive about "his accomplishments" despite them being plagiarized from his old world, then he becomes overly confident because of his success which really required very little effort on his part. "His luck" is a huge plot armor. He gets what he needs right before he needs them.

The poems were nice, some arc were interesting and some were not so much. It gets annoying every time he meets a foreigner and goes ape sh*t on them.

The story becomes quite predictable and you can easily guess what is going to happen once you learn the formula. The only thing that is unpredictable are the new arcs, but the content (getting a new project, trouble with new project, getting denounced, face smacking, reaction chapters, new arc) is very similar to each other.

The more I read (after around chapter 500) the more I dislike the novel.

For the first few chapters, I completely lost my interest with the MC. Several months later, while searching for something fun to read. I came across this novel again. I decided to give it a try (even though I already hated the MC). When I got past the 10th chapter, I was already hooked. I still hated the MC but the story line was so entertaining that I couldn't stop reading!

UPDATE:

I can no longer recommend this novel to anyone. Every since Qidian stopped releasing "premium" chapters, there was no way... more>> to continue reading unless you "pay" with stones. I will only donate my money directly to the translators and not pay money for chapter. I am dropping this. It was fun while it lasted. <<less

I have read this novel till around ch 46, and all I gotta to say is that its decent, its not very good and its not very bad.. Not the best for English readers or readers who dont know anything about the Chinese social circle. 80% of the jokes in this novel are related to stuff from china or things that are happening there.

Its really hard to relate to the story when the jokes are stuff you have never even heard of and are native to china, and most of... more>> the jokes become 2nd hand when you translate from Chinese version into English version. I know that the translators try their best to explain the jokes/the Chinese stuff but its really not good enough, its no where near as good as reading it 1st hand and understanding the jokes/ main concept of the story. Its like someone trying to explain a joke to you after its has been said.. It becomes very lame and not funny. I have read a bunch of Chinese novel so far and this one just goes too deep and uses many real Chinese celebrity's/ social circles. Honestly its juts meant for Chinese readers, I just cant seem to relate at all. I have been reading alot of light novels in the recent few months, and this one has been the hardest to digest. I did find a few parts which were done really well, but thats only a few small parts.

On the plus side the story is quite unique, and new. Its a decent read for when you are bored. Which is one of the reason why I am giving it a 3/5. <<less
