I was excited to read this due to the author's last work, but I think it ultimately isn't as good. My expectations might have been a bit high though, as I was hoping it was as fun as the 2nd arc in World Hopping: Avenge Our Love. The MC isn't really shameless in how he operates in this one, but he's quite straightforward in his rebuttals, which is nice. He doesn't give anyone face if they don't deserve it, essentially.

Pros:

    • Face slapping
    • MC and ML make a good couple
    • Mature, kind MC, but isn't a pushover
    • Not really angsty, besides ML's past experience
Cons:

    • Face slapping (The MC is a huge gary stu)
    • Some areas of the plot, such as the esports thing and the jade gambling, seemed a bit random and unnecessary overall
    • Most antagonists seemed a bit too s*upid
    • This ties into the face slapping part, but people would always look down on the MC when he would do something unexpected, and obviously it would work out in the end. Got a bit tiresome after the 100th time.
There's some things I didn't include in that list because I find them a bit more subjective. For example, the ML has a second personality. It didn't really matter much overall, but I kinda liked it; both personalities like the MC so it isn't abrasive.

As for the system... well, it's a system. There's a reason for it's existence:

Spoiler

MC's ancestor created the system (somehow, it's hard to tell exactly due to mtl) to pass on their skills throughout the generations. It's actually somehow harder to believe that a human was able to due this, instead of the system magically be given to the MC for various unknown reasons. Maybe that's just me?

[collapse]

There's also a reason for the MC's rebirth:

Spoiler

The MC's past life didn't actually end up in jail. With ML helping him from the shadows (the MC is unware of the ML in his past life), he was able to counterattack and become quite successful in that life too. However the ML dies, and when the MC finds out about this, he uses the system for a chance at rebirth, so he can change the ML's fate. He also ties his and the ML's fates together, so the ML won't die early. I thought this was quite romantic.

[collapse]

Overall it was ok, the MC was a bit too overpowered for my tastes, which brings my score down, but I liked how fluffy their relationship was, which brings my score up... so a 3.5 overall.

Also, whilst they technically do have s*x, it's only when they get married, which is... the last chapter I believe. It's understandable considering the MC is only 15 at time of rebirth, but the novel is basically shounen-ai otherwise.

the MC is steadfast and smart and the ML is broken but still tolerable (mostly) and once they are together there is a lot of fluff and sugar but the MC is a 15 yo minor throughout most of the story so no hanky-panky or papapa.

I do wish the author would have focused the MC's OP-ness on just a couple of skills, like his cooking and his poison carp persona, instead of expanding the skill list again and again until he turned into the all-around-genius type MC. Seriously, I came... more>> down with 'genius fatigue' after overexposure to his complete awesomeness in everything he does and it dropped this story by a star.

there were several unnecessary arcs in the second half and once he finally found out who he was the business side of things made me roll my eyes
Spoiler

as the MC is still legally a 15-16 yo kid. China has the Minors Protection Law which limits the hours that a child under the age of 18 can work, plus he is still in jr high through the entire story up until c124, when there's a time skip to 3 years later, (it skips over high school entirely).

the MC would have to have 6 clones, 12 arms, and 4 heads to do everything he is supposedly doing while also going to school full time and maintaining his number 1 spot in the grade as well running all the other businesses he already has. Then add to that all the businesses his relative ran into the ground, plus his new position as heir. That's not even counting all the side projects he has going, his work as a spokesman, etc. Even if he never slept there's just not enough hours in the day for him to be doing everything the author says he's doing, especially since she specifically said he was handling it all himself (until the ML got sick). Plus he can jet off to other cities or countries even when school is in session to go buy jade, etc. Without consequences.

[collapse]

Also, while I don't mind a good face-slapping story, I'm not a huge fan of people blacking and cyber bullying Jr. High kids. I know it's a standard trope in entertainment stories and he's mentally older, but physical age should be taken into consideration. It's bad enough when they do it to adults but the MC is only a fifteen year old minor throughout most of the story.

my rating is first part 4, 2nd half is a 3 and 3.5 for the end. The last bit was very fluffy but I'm not sure it makes up for the messy second half of the story. I'm rating it a 4 and not a 3 mostly because there is no idiot MC in this one. <<less

Why the low rating?

Anyway, it was an enjoyable read for me even with mtl. It was easy to understand.

Although there were plot holes, I think the ending was tied nicely. It was a happy ending despite all the heavy drama at the start.

The plot twist was surprisingly good.

I loved this story... and I cried a lot... but it's alright because I've been a part of this wonderful journey. (*^▽^*) There are many twists and turns, and lots of face-slapping but the fluffs and sweetness bet the MC and ML offset the negativity. ♡´・ᴗ・`♡ Such a moving story..

Some context:

Not really optimistic about this novel at first. I even almost dropped this when: ... more>>
Spoiler

MC's metaphysical account was willingly exposed to be connected by MC's real identity.

[collapse]
Reason's being, I don't think exposing that thing is really a good move (realistically) for the MC's side. I mean, that particular ability of MC is practically magic! In a scientific modern world, you would've thought that even the government would be interested in that to the point of even controlling MC's actions. But! I still hung on and fortunately, the novel was not disappointing at all.

The overview:

What worries me the most in the first half of the novel is how MC gains power up almost seemingly unrelated abilities (cooking, divination/psychic, he even almost enters the entertainment circle). Adding to that is how almost every people that MC meet would become cannon fodders and stepping stones.

However, in the second half of the novel, author starts to cut off most of the (random/unrelated) elements and seemingly strives to focus only on some, which is mainly the business world and the relationship/emotional line. Usually when this thing happens, I would have a lot of complaints cuz what this does that it's basically abandon most of the things we have read and loved at the start. For example in this case:

Spoiler

MC's middle school friends who keep supporting him in the previous life, the orphanage where MC had been raised, MC's craftsmanship skills, heck, even there's some skill that was given to MC that MC would never use till the end.

[collapse]

Surprisingly, this decision did wonders for the overall story and pace. Cutting down the elements reduces a whole lot of this novel greasy-ness. By making MC focus on only certain things, the reading becomes a lot more fulfilling? relieved? it also makes MC actions less uncanny (because it distracts us from the fact that author gives MC a lot of proficiency in a wide array of things, AKA jack sue-ness).

And this also narrowed the scope of the cannon fodder, that is, businessmen and politicians. I personally commend this outcome because writing politicians and businessmen as obscenely s*upid, evil, and greedy, makes it a lot more realistic. Cuz we all know most rich people and people of power actually act like that irl lmao. It's definitely an upgrade compared to the usual jealous AF randos/celebrities/artists who act a bit too extreme after seeing people doing a bit more well than them (even tho they already have a pretty good life so far). Anyway, this became one of the main points why I decided to give this novel a high rating.

The characters:

Another cause that makes me retain the high rating would be the main leads' personality and chemistry (a warning, I would ramble a lot about this)...

MC (shou) :
The protagonist in this novel, Yun Zheng, is definitely a rare gem among other protagonists shous or even danmei's protagonists in general. Basically, he's the dream husband; a provider both financially and in household matters (he cooks well and can take good care of people), a protector who would give his all to avenge you, and can coax his partner well daily everywhere and every time on any occasion.

He's just so pampering? and reliable that sometimes you forget that he is physically still a 15 y/o (seriously, sometimes I forgot ML is supposed to be the older one in their relationship). The keyword of his temperament would be gentle as a spring breeze, mature as a towering bonsai, yet playful like your everyday neighborhood big brother. But despite all of it, he can be scary af when outraged. Kinda like spring in Canada, one day it could be sunny and warm with no snow in sight, yet an hour later, you get a snowstorm that instantly turns the environment like you are in the southern pole.

Also he's sort of a straight man? His taste is definitely what a straight guy would think of when seeking for a wife/girlfriend. He's weak to beautiful faces and coquettish personality. And it's actually what caused his post-rebirth/reincarnation downfall (a delicate flower that he treated as a little brother and pampered so much throughout his life was actually a white-eyed wolf). Though worries not, he's not the type scum who was to be swayed by beauties when he was already bitten once or/and already in a relationship with another. He is extremely loyal and quite possessive to a person he has already given his heart to (not as possessive as the ML tho, but still domineering in his own way).

With a personality like that, he should be a major heartthrob. But surprisingly, there are zero people (I meant this as named characters, not counting random internet mob) who are bold enough to confess or at least have crushes on Yun Zheng throughout the novel (I'd liked to think the ML was quick to scare off any competitors before they even make any move lol).

ML (gong) :
As for the ML, Gu Yan, he's quite the opposite, except in terms of professional qualities. Suppose Yun Zheng was the type to have a gentle front but a ruthless core, then Gu Yan would be the cold, intimidating type who in truth, has a sensitive soul inside of him. He is a capable heir of a prominent family who is seemingly not close to anybody even his family. But in actuality, everybody in his family loves him.
Spoiler

the family here is the grandpa and the cousins/brothers (those who lived in the main house), not those scum uncles and incompetent parents.

[collapse]

Most of the time, we see him in his little dog mode where he acts as a coquettish, pitiful (and jealous) white lotus in front of Yun Zheng (remembers, MC ate the hell out of this shit), while giving off icy unapproachable look to outsiders. However, he has another side of him. This side of him is the big cat mode. In this mode, he became your typical dangerous, rebellious brooding gong except he still very much obedient to Yun Zheng (the only reason why MC-ML have no s*x until they eventually got married, which is like, 3-5 years after they confirmed their relationship).
Spoiler

Btw, this big cat mode is actually ML's second personality. Yep, he has dual personality disorder bcuz of his childhood trauma (torture). Hasn't really healed even after the end of the story, but both personality gradually retained each other characteristic that perhaps in the future, they would become one again? No matter, even though only the little dog personality who could fulfill Yun Zheng preferences, he still loves both of the personality as they are still Gu Yan in the end.

Waiting for a better translation. So far it's really good love me some face slapping.

MC has real talent as a chef, continues to learn more skills like metaphysics and martial arts from a system. Starts off with cooking and live streaming. MC seems like a straight man because he's never actually been in Love? So we'll see how his sexuality develops after meeting the ML in person. For now they've only sent messages online. MC doesn't know he knows the ML so far.

ML and MC are childhood friends? But the... more>> MC suffers from amnesia and died due to cannon fodder in the first life. The ML seems to have a split personality due to child abuse. <<less

The constant face-slapping (s) made this novel redundantly boring at times, I'm at ch. 56 and I've lost count of how many faces has MC slapped. At the end of the story, maybe they'd be enough to form a small country.

The skill (s) were unnecessarily heaped on MC even though I believe that he'd still succeed even without them. I even felt that those skills brought more problems often than not, because the author didn't even spend a half chapter after solving another NPC to create another slapable cannon fodder.... more>> To be honest, this novel's too gimmicky.

Like one review said, genius fatigue is a thing. When I first read this story, I was often angry at Lu Ran and MC's classmates but as the story went on, I didn't even react when a Weibo-wide cursing storm happened to MC. It's like, uh-huh, what else? *Examining nails*

And the foods were mid. MC would make either noodle, porridge or potatoes. And you know what? Surprise! An average cheatless and unreincarnated grandma can do better than that.

The only thing that still keeps my attention is the couple's past and current lives but admittedly it's because so little has been divulged so far. It's not that original, but I'm curious how they'd solve the problem.

I dropped this novel at ch. 56 because the MC's about to usher in a new job as an actor extraordinarie woohoo so boring. Still curious about their love life, though at this point they're basically a couple already. Could probably guess the root of the problem in their past life, so I'm done with this novel. <<less

Spoiler

since it involves past life, misunderstandings and amnesias, etc

but overall, I like the author's way of writing. The way how everything make sense in the end, it's a real wrap up. You might feel a bit iffy from the beginning but keep going, in the end everything will be revealed.
