Hey, princess. Why are you staring so much!?

Raize, a well-mannered boy, is a magician working at the royal palace. He works hard, is blessed with kind and friendly coworkers, and believes that his life as a court magician will be smooth sailing—but there’s just one problem.

To be specific ──

*gaze* (· _ · |

For some reason, the princess of the kingdom keeps staring at him.

She secretly follows him and stares, and she runs away with a red face whenever their eyes meet or he talks to her.

What on earth could it be?…

While thinking about this, he works another day, pretending not to notice.

…Hey, princess. I can see you.

It's well translated and apparently well written with characters that feel relatable and distinct from each other even early on. With a nice lighthearted tone as could be expected from the tags and title, I was happily settling into reading it when I hit chapter 8. It was like running face first into an invisible brick wall. Too dark, I'm out.

"Nope I'm out" reasons:

1. He was basically kidnapped to work for the court. If it was just this I'd have been, "Meh, makes sense. It's an aristocracy system after all." and kept reading.

2. Then they magically operate on him, and anyone else with high magic power, to implant at LEAST a form of mind control on him. It's implied that that effect is just the tip of the iceberg.

3. Having had this operation he finds out that he is no longer considered anything more than a walking weapon by those in power. He is not a person nor has human rights.

The writing and story quality are likely worth higher than the rating I have given it. Unfortunately, neither title, tags, nor synopsis gave any hint of this lurking darkness. There is nothing wrong with darkness in a story and that's exactly what some people are looking for. But as the lighthearted action/comedy/fantasy/romance it portrays itself as, it is only a 2 out of 5. <<less

Typical Japanese MC: dense as a black hole and overworked without any serious complaints. If you are alright with that, the story is about a 4 but gets dragged down by bits where logic gets thrown out the window.

There was an attempted assassination and a terrorist attack on soldiers leaving multiple of them dead yet the MC and a maid thinks it’s fine to let the princess sneak out to enjoy the festival. MC fights a mind controlled enemy and sees the exact same symptoms in the royal guards but doesn’t piece it together until they start attacking. MC is a long range sniper but decides to not snipe the guards; instead, he gets close to them and the princess because, I assume, the author wanted to make him look more heroic.
