I’ll Live My Second Life!

Fii was the first princess of the rural nation, Déman.

One day, she became engaged to King Roy; an icy king with both beauty and ability, whose management ability was perfect, and who would be perfect save for his coldness towards women.

The engagement was not really anything for her to celebrate though.

Why? Because her younger sister with both beauty and fame, whose personality was great, who held a mysterious power and who was a soothing miko had gotten into a marriage of love with said king. And Fii, her twin, had just come along with her as a set bonus.

She was treated as a stain on the fairy tale, but after a certain event, Fii decided she didn’t care any more.

She didn’t care about this lifestyle where she never saw her husband even once, where she would spend the rest of her days rotting away in a royal villa.

She was going to live her second life!

That was the decision she came to.

First of all, I would not be translating the story if I didn’t enjoy it. Although the author wrote it with a romance aimed at women in mind, it is being published under the fantasy genre and is being marketed towards males. Take from that what you will. The story itself it mostly focused around the way the slightly airheaded protagonist makes the Apprentice Knight group her home, and has very little romance at the moment.

Indeed, even in the raws, there is very little romantic development (none, you could even... more>> say) between the male lead and the female protagonist.

It should also be noted that despite what jacobpaige seems to suggest, I don’t actually like the male protagonist. He was unrepentant in his rudeness towards the author, so I banned him from commenting, because the author does indeed visit on occasion. In the 14 months that I have been translating, only one person has ever been IP-banned, and I rarely delete comments, no matter how s*upid. Jacobpaige was a rude and unpleasant exception.

At any rate, overall, the tone of the novel is light, and the characters are a little silly, and many of the episodes thus far focus on the protagonist’s group of apprentice friends, and the antics they get up to. There is definitely a deeper story, but any developments on that end are taken at a leisurely pace.

A slow-paced, lighthearted, but enjoyable novel. <<less

This is a really hilarious novel with great quality translations!

A light-hearted romance/comedy with a sorta oblivious female lead who is surprisingly likable! My favorite is probably Kain though (his crisis is just too funny~).

The only issues is that the chapters are kinda short so I'm always left wanting for more...

Since the translation was removed by the time I found this novel, I sent it to my "to read" list without even trying to read it. But something about the picture or the description, or perhaps something I've read in the review kept me interested in this novel, so I've finally decided to read it. Or rater, listen to it. I can't read Japanese, but when google translate reads it out to me, I can understand almost everything.

And I'm sooo glad I decided to read it. It is... more>> exactly what I wanted for a long time. And it's hilarious, with the right amount of sweet, fun, interesting, and heartbreaking.

So, let me list the things that made me so happy, while trying to avoid spoilers.

  1. Realistic abilities.

Just because she decided to become a knight, doesn't mean she is good at it. There never was a moment where her abilities felt unnatural. And when we start to see her talent, it has nothing to do with knights and swordsmanship! But she uses it well XD
  2. Kids don't save the world.

While there are certain things happening behind the scenes, the MC doesn't get to participate in the most of it yet. Why? Because she's a kid. Because she's still an apprentice knight. Because adults around her are cool and can do their job without depending on a teenager. When she DOES get to join, it's because the mission is considered safe enough, or because a certain characteristic of hers is needed for it. That's right, not a skill, but a characteristic.
  3. It's not even about her.

The "main conflict" is not about her, and only starts to involve her after about 100 chapters. The story of the *spoiler* is very sad and beautiful, and in most novels it would be the story of a main character. But it isn't, and that makes the world in-story feel so much bigger than just MC's life.
  4. The spotlight is shared.

While the story is mostly about Fii, very often she isn't the one who stands in the spotlight. In most cases, it would be her role to show of the results of "special training" or fight the battle that decides it all. But that is not the case and very often her participation doesn't actually change much, as she is still far weaker than those around her. She does get her moments, though.
  5. The main focus of the story.

While the "plot" advances in the background, handled carefully by capable adults, the story focuses on Fii's hilarious antics and shenanigans. Being an apprentice knight isn't easy, especially when you can't sit still for a single minute without doing something s*upid. I really like how the author prioritizes certain things over others -

    Spoiler

the fact that the fight over dormitory's "masculinity ranking" got more chapters (and more drama) than the swordsmanship tournament between 2 dormitories says A LOT.

    [collapse]
  6. The MC's personality.

Fii is adorable, energetic and quick to make mistakes. She is also quite a tomboy and fits perfectly in a herd of rowdy guys. She likes having power over others and doesn't hesitate to fight dirty, but knowing her past, it is completely justified. And, despite being a tiny tyrant, in the end, it's impossible to hate her. Not even the guys who suffer from her tyranny can hate her for long.
Anyway, I really love the story and hope that more people will find a way to read it. But now I must go back, I have 70 more chapters to read. <<less

I was crying at first. Crying REAL TEARS damn it

Princess Fii is treated with so much injustice as a reader I can't help but empathise

I was scared of that at first but it's not a 'tragedy' because Fii is a strong and brave gal who doesn't give up and starts to develop into a really interesting character

... more>> It's told in the 1st person POV and although Fii is the MC. Other characters also tell the story from their POV as well

This is what makes it interesting. I really like this and I can't wait for the next chapter

Sadly they're quite short <<less

Fii is honestly one of the most refreshing hidden cross dressing protagonists I've ever experienced. There's not a single stereotypical "oh no, what a hot guy! Kyaa what is this pounding in my chest" line in this entire story. She's cheerful, upbeat, down to earth and as a guy she has a reputation as a nasty/horrible/ underhanded guy when fighting. I adore her, and honestly I wish revenge on the entire two kingdoms on her behalf! I hope that idiotic king falls for her and gets rejected!!

from what I've read... more>> this is less a politics story, revenge story or anything if that sort. More like Fii and her knight friend's daily life? I do think the title is a bit misleading and makes you think this is some sort of isekai novel but truly there's no reincarnation or time traveling here! Regardless this story is solid and Fii is a refreshing breathe of air, especially her nasty and underhanded fighting. I truly did enjoy almost everything I read, but I do burn with anger at Fii's mistreatment and also how Fiiru takes so long to appear. <<less

The novel is hilarious. Following the MC as she leads her "second" life is so fun. She is a really head strong person. It was a wonderful read. Bad news is, after c97 it got picked up by a new translator. Its machine translated after c97 and very very hard to read due to poor editing. I am forced to drop this novel because I can't make sense of this translation. But till c97 the translation is wonderful. Definitely recommend. Hope a new translator picks it up.

This is one of those rare cases of a female protagonist that's actually very good, and I'd recommend it perhaps solely for that reason alone. The writing itself is strong enough, but what I like the most is the protagonist Fii.

She's a strong, independent woman that don't need no man. Uh, memes aside, she is actually a determined, proactive, and smart protagonist. She's also not needlessly overpowered or anything s*upid, and there's no unnecessary isekai plot elements or random, unrealistic power-ups, or game stats, or levels either -- it's a... more>> straight fantasy featuring a girl with average strength trying to work in the military despite her limitations. Her strength lies in mostly in her agility and willingness to use unconventional methods in combat, considering she has a small figure, but lacks strength as you'd expect from someone who hasn't trained in combat and spent most of her time as a sheltered noble for her life, and of course, she's also need to use dirty tactics to win just due to the difference in physical strength alone. She doesn't let sh*t get to her and stands up for herself properly without needing to be protected, and she doesn't fall in love with anyone either (at least not yet). She doesn't always win, in fact she often loses, but she gains from each experience and always gives it her all.

She keeps the fact that she's female a secret too, so you don't get any of that patronizing "girls can't do anything" comments that you'd expect from this kind of story. Usually that kind of stuff is pretty easy fodder for giving a female protagonist motivation to become strong. There isn't any window for that kind of treatment due to gender barriers to really exist, and the result it she competes on equal grounds as the rest of her squadmates.

Anyways, I really like Fii as a main character. I hope you'll like her too. This has concluded my Fii review. I didn't even review the story, I just liked Fii and wanted to talk about her. <<less

Rather refreshing MC. One would first guess that be the overly self-conscious, super clumsy kind of cross dressing girl in which all boys s*upidly fall for her.

Let's put those worries aside.

Fii, even though appearing dense and weak is actually rather clever, collected, earnest and plays dirty. She takes no bullshit, is honest and even though there are MANY characters introduced, it's not like everybody falls for her. It's more like natural friendships that are created and not nonsensical 'I am so totally smitten with you'.

If you like your female lead... more>> to be cruel; it's not much but a healthy bit of cruelness is part of her gentle'n'caring-package.
Spoiler

Her smashing s.o. Head without hesitation - deserved it though

And the story is absolutely hilarious! Especially once she get's a dog (tehehehe). ? Can't wait for the romancetrain to stop by ❤ (ӦvӦ。)

Spoiler

Something is bound to happen once they'll start to realise who/what she is and their perspective and way of looking at her will change from a trustworthy and loyal comrade.

Ah- and the translations are very smooth to read, too. ? <<less

While quite neat indeed, there is but one grave issue with this work.

The premise. Well, premises, in a way the issues are far too numerous.

To put it simply, too many circumstances, coincidences and unrealistic behavior overlaps to force drama.

The first princess is abandoned by literary everyone, yeah, even her little sister does not do anything either. The list of mistreatment is too long and each point would actually make that character a villain (who is only nice to their allies, yeah, always judge someone on how one treats their enemies... more>> and how they designate them, not just how they treat allies).

Whether it is each and every servant being incompetent and arrogant.

Parents which abandon their child, never considering the consequences since she is also a princess.

A supposedly competent king which just mistreats half of the world, not just ignoring "innocent until proven guilty" (which ofc would be realistic in the setting, albeit possibly not for a competent and prudent ruler) but "guilty and no way to prove innocence" and provoking actions which would make one guilty.

A little sister with a supposedly good personality but doing absolutely nothing to save her loved sister.

An agent who can not say "The target is now the squire you chose" because it'd be a waste of time... and otherwise there would be no story.

By the by no one would be s*upid enough to serve the 2nd Queen cold soup, never mind being fired, such an obvious insult can easily cost one their head. Especially one would expect to if one already baselessly villainized her.

Also gotta love the lo*icon Count being bludgeoned and no one even asking why a princess would do that, just letting it slide, even though she could have easily justified it for a noble can not do just anything to a servant of a higher ranked noble or well, royalty in this case.

Having misunderstanding, never solved of course and many more other circumstances and coincidences stack is seriously disappointing. I otherwise love this work about a cross-dressing princess (Queen) knight applicant but the background stories are just awfully drama a la "how can I make things even worse?".

There could have been so many much more simple ways to have a queen become a squire in (what is now) her own kingdom without anyone significant knowing and without this leaving her to die or cry to be allowed to go out and buy food because she has no friggin' servant (not that the guards would have allowed her to or reported to their superior who specifically choose them to be a terrible as possible. For ducks sake, what was the author even thinking... ah right "how can I make things even worse?").

I'm very conflicted about wanting to read more since this might also mean to encounter more and utter s*upidity. I really like the characters, most of the main ones at least, Mr Husbando not because he is terribly written but more episodes on how Fie was mistreated will really hurt my head, not heart. <<less

I actually bought the light novel in English (vol. 2 will be out in March) and then when I ran out of chapters I read all the chapters of the web novel that were translated. There are some differences between the LN and the WN. One of the big differences is that every chapter ends with Crow's diary which is hilarious. Btw. The LNs name is "Walking My Second Path in Life" instead. Volume 1 covered the chapter up to chapter 56 in the web novel plus there are some... more>> extra chapters.

I like the MC. She may be small but she doesn't let anyone walk over her. Despite being a princess, she doesn't display good table manners, has a foul mouth and fights dirty. She also doesn't mind breaking her father, the king's nose when she is angry at him :) <<less

One of my favorite novel with femProtag. She's not OP, but she's not a weak girl either. Her life is so pitiful and I am crying when I read that she's starving at start of the story. The story is cute and fluffy, plus broship is the main ship in this story (at least until now). Reading this will give you warm feeling and you will want to cheer the MC.

When I started to read it, it was promising. The chapters were pretty short, and it was progressing in a good pace. Then I really got into it, and shed a manly tear for her.

The amount of injustice the MC has faced since childhood is atrocious, it's so frustrating just reading it! Yet she still someone remains indifferent to the hateful words and treatment towards her. The MC is very strong, not physically but mentally and emotionally and I respect her for that. Also, I never really hated the king... more>> (at least not yet) since his treatment towards Fii isn't any different than anyone else. I just feel a little cold towards him. I just can't wait for him to get smacked in the face with what he's been trying to ignore. Anyway this is a light hearted read, despite me crying. (5/5) <<less

Before I get started, for those who can't find the first 80ish chaps, just google. And once you continue to read up to TempomachineTranslations- just push through it because this story has so much to offer, especially during the great Cenntinni translations. I binged up to the lates chapter in two days because this story was too good.

This story is unqiue. It went beyond my expectations and doesn't go outrageous with those stereotypical new life stories.

I started reading for the plot, and while the main plot isn't about her, reading... more>> about her struggles and worries made me feel closer to the character. Her personality is hilarious once you get through the initial introduction of the story. From pity to all out laughter, this story gives the right amount of bitter to the sweet drink it offers.

The author's switch of perspectives are meaningful to understanding mainly Fii (and Fiiru later on) and main plot. They aren't constant nor too long to stray from Fii as the MC. Though you don't get too much into the background/motives of other characters besides a very select few.

As for the actual handling of the plot, like I said, its realistic. There is actual character development, and Fii acts accordingly to her bold personality. She makes mistakes, she recognizes it, she repents, she learns. Other characters make mistakes, recognize it, repent, and learn. And these applies to the serious situations as much as the comedic silly ones.

The only con I have is the overall storytelling. While the story was unique and handled situations in a more realistic manner, past the angsty intro the whole tune of the story changes. I feel there was too much comedy at one point that I was just reading to get to the main plot. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, it just takes away the built up tension for the event (not sure if it was the translator or author with the short filler put inbetween the important plot point).

This story is for those who want to read about the struggles of a neglected girl carving her own path for a real family. Past the intro, get ready to laugh for tens of chapters. As of right now, romance isn't the main focus, though there are many hints to possible MLs. <<less

First of all, this story has nothing to do with reincarnation. Nothing at all.

I’m up to date with the raws (currently 121), and I can say that this story hasn’t lost my interest in the least. My pet name for it is “Fii’s Story of Being Hilariously Awesome While Aspiring to Become the Most Manly.” And yes, Fii is a girl. But that doesn’t stop her from being awesome.

The author can be a bit confusing sometimes with the ordering of stuff; at one point (s) he breaks from the current... more>> story to write a piece that happened several weeks before and then returns to the original timeline abruptly. The details within a chapter make sense to me, though. <<less

OK, I loved this novel. I read it quite a while ago, and it was one of my first JP novels. I highly recommend it (for light reading).

The main character's backstory and the system of government requires a *bit* more touching up (like, no matter how awesome her twin sister is, nobody'd ignore a princess, even if she's from a small country), but other than that, it makes sense.

The MC doesn't immediately become ridiculously powerful, as in most JP novels. She has a bit of common sense. Although she's resourceful,... more>> her methods aren't immediately glorified and many point out that they were borderline against the rules. The story is mostly not romance, or at least not yet (there's a slow romance tag, so probably later).

*Edit 6/17/2020: it's been picked up! Guess I'll start reading again :D

*Edit 9/19/2020: This particular novel has gone through many translation groups (some are just lightly-edited MTL), so readers should be warned that names and translation quality get kind of inconsistent. <<less

This story has well written dialogue that would normally suit a higher rating. Unfortunately none of the characters are particularly fun, and since neither Fii's attitude nor her mistreatment makes much logical sense, the story ends up meandering quite a bit. Fiiru being almost entirely absent from the story so far also greatly reduces any intrigue - I assume this is to make it easier for readers to accept Fii and the King having a romantic relationship later (my guess not a spoiler), and if that ends up being the... more>> case I find that to be extremely poor plotting/writing to me. Even if that is not where things end up heading, excluding Fiiru from the plot to this extent makes the setup flimsier and less substantive. <<less

The LN drifted off from the WN at the end of the second book and turned into something else in the third book. Things just happen out of nowhere and everything just wrapped up nicely. Unlike the first and second book, it feels like the author just try to rush and finish this novel asap, with all of the pre-established plots ending up unresolved or being wrapped up half-heartedly.

Spoiler

Fie got exposed (from someone from the left field, the chancellor. Who? Idk, and so are you reader. He's there just to progress the plot.

She then got called back to the main castle, a "war" broke out, she divorced, married Quinn (I refuse to call him Queen) and then everyone lived happily ever after.

Um, I read this novel quite a while ago. I loved it alot and decided to wait for it to grow until 50+ before reading again but I couldn't access to it anymore since it was deleted.

I'm really disappointed since it was a gender bender tagged which was really rare for a girl dressed as a guy type of gender bender and not the other way round so yeah..

I really hope there is another way I could reread it and if someone knows how to read from Chapter 1 please... more>> tell me!

For now, I will probably be finding other ways on finding chapter 1. <<less

First, I'd like to thank the translator for translating this piece. This story has good balance between tearjerking scenes and comedic antics of MC. After binge-reading it for 3-4 hours, I could say.. I want more. I really liked it.

But there's where the problem emerge. Most of the stories that have 50+ chapters out of translation can take me 7-8 hours but I only need half the time to finish binge-reading this story. That's how short each chapter is. Still, It's a pretty good novel worth recommending.
