I Will Fulfill the Role of the Villain

The protagonist of a war fantasy novel, Theo, competes with his rival and antagonist, Luke, for the position of Supreme Commander.

Having been reincarnated into Luke’s role, he struggles to fulfill his duties as the villain.

“It seems like principles as a soldier, the duties I should uphold, don’t matter to you at all.”

Even if misunderstood by Theo, Luke silently remained faithful to his role as the antagonist.

After completing all his duties, Luke successfully gave Theo his happy ending, cast aside his military uniform, and retired from the army.

Now, Luke planned to create his own future story without interference from anyone.

That was the plan, at least…

“Why go this far? I’m no longer a soldier, and if you really think about it, we were never on good terms anyway.”

To make matters worse, not only had he unexpectedly reunited with Theo, but now, Theo was persistently and seriously pressing him in a way he hadn’t imagined.

“I want to know you better.”

It was a completely incomprehensible statement, and it wasn’t even an appropriate answer to the question.

The protagonist came to the antagonist and suddenly asked for help, simply because they wanted to know him better?

These are my rate so far, will update when there's further translation.

  • Plot : 3 Starred
  • Background Setting : 3 Starred
  • Character Development : 3 Starred
  • Story Telling : 4 Starred
  • Translation : 4 Starred
For plot and background setting, they seem to be jumping all over the storyline. Explanation of the world map and the world system are usually being written in the beginning, right?

For how the story is being written, compared to other, I find it enjoyable. I often find other Korean story with unclear point of view. In one sentence, it is the... more>> first person then the next one turns into third person.

While ML and the friends like Leo and Fael have steadily character development... In the latest chapter, I feel MC has lost his personality. I know everything that he did because he is a villain at the time... But that doesn't mean he lost his habit so suddenly in acting as villain (smart but unpredictable, unkind, unfriendly, untrusted, and disobedient person). In one night, he turns into a tsundere and a little dumb. Too bad, his character in the beginning is what made me interested... <<less

First of all, leaving this temporary review as I think it's unfair to give a biased review just based on a few chapters read (especially as this is still an ongoing one and incomplete).

To be honest, the story is pretty slow-paced to me, but it's straightforward and easy to read. About the plot, sure the ultimate goal was the MC fulfilling his role as a villain and elevating the ML to his position but after achieving his part, I felt like the plot became bland. I think there was no... more>> great conflict that drives the narrative forward. Although the author kinda interjected a mysterious organization halfway that the MC and ML needed to investigate together (coz they're sus and might use surrounding nations in order to start a war with Heinerne) I felt it lacked a buildup from the earlier chapters.

Now let me state my opinions on the characters:

Luke [MC] — I like him. I don't know about the other readers but I tend to empathize on characters like this. The thing with people being disappointed is that some "might" set their expectations "too high" or because of "first impressions." I found his flaws necessary for character development and growth. And why do some people have this connotation of him as a "damsel in distress"? Sure the author inserted some cliché moments (which is kinda s*upid) to portray Luke's weaker side or reckless confrontation

Spoiler

Like that one scene in Podina where Luke met the "summoner" whom inflicted a serious injury to his right arm

[collapse]

To get entangled more with Theo and in order for plot progression but do these moments entirely define Luke as a "damsel" or becoming weaker and less smart all throughout the chapters ahead, dismissing all his other characteristics? Imo, his "negatives" are more of impulsive, reckless, frank and dense when it comes to love. He has a good sense of "danger" when it comes to fighting monsters and foe (most of the time) but it becomes dull and inept when it comes to romantic advances. He's unaware that he can be alluring from other people's perspective but it might also be just Theo's rose-tinted POV at later chapters. He's distant and independent towards others. He'd rather carry all the burden than rely on his subordinates. He's also kinda "tsundere" sometimes when interacting with ML. He is still strong, smart and capable even after leaving the military hence why the ML "forced" him to help with the military affairs once again, but NOT the only reason, iykyk 😏

Theo [ML] — To be honest, he's my type when it comes to BL top lol (in terms of character design) Stoic and manly, dark-haired with good build >////< He has the perfect build contrast with the MC.

He is highly intelligent, strong and capable. Back in their academy days, there was that one scene when Luke look very disheveled and tired from sleepless nights 'cause of studying. (He's rivalry with Theo began and he wants to be no.1) Theo on the other hand still looks proper and nonchalant. I feel like he's the type of person who can put in less effort but still manages to get full straight A++++ Ofc, who can blame him. He had a tough and strict upbringing being the only heir to a ducal family, plus all those pressure and expectations. I know he still puts the effort but there are times when I feel like he's a "genius". As a child, he read and memorized all the books in the Duke estate's library. When he came back from Kyleum after some time, he finished all his backlog work as Supreme Commander in just one day. Then he still manages to juggle all the works of supreme commander, train less competent subordinates, lead an investigation unit to thwart possible international conflict and conspiracy. I mean, do you even sleep, Theo?

He can be stubborn and shameless at times (when interacting with MC). Ok, in earlier chapters one might find him "unlikeable" only because most people might be empathizing more with the MC, sorry Theo. AHHH the misunderstandings!
Spoiler

That one scene when MC disobeyed his suspension order and still went to participate in the Membern war. Ofc MC has a noble reason for this but ML kinda snapped at him and told MC he's disappointed. It was kinda hurtful on MC's part and Theo, you hastily judged MC and didn't even hear him out?

[collapse]

Although I guess the author used that one scene as the catalyst in order for them to grow distant and eventually paved the way for MC to leave the military. But in later chapters, you will notice the character growth of ML. He became more understanding and observant of MC, discovering Luke's true nature and seeing him for who he truly is.

Supporting Characters: Some might have minor parts and really necessary for the narrative.

Fael — tbh, I didn't expect him to be that significant up to the later chapters. Like him, hate him... he played an important part. The only guy who first knew MC's true nature in the military through the embezzlement incident.

Mile — author-nim, you really did a good job with his character. Mile is the "antagonist" of the antagonist. You know it's effective when you yourself wanna bash their head to the wall.

Leo — MC's closest friend (and only friend from the start) in the military despite all the bad image of MC. Easy-going and keen observant. The only guy who knows MC and ML's budding romance without the two realizing it themselves lol.

There are few more characters but I've only listed the ones with most interactions with MC and ML.

Although this is a transmigration/possession story, I wish the author delves a little more on MC's backstory/background (like his real life?). I don't think that was touched in the story (yet?)

As for the romance part, well it's just right for me but I guess most readers will find it kinda slow-burn. There's a few sprinkles of cute banter here and there that'll make you giggle (at least for me), but it's Theo being more apparent about his feelings to Luke in the later chapters (100-ish).

Spoiler

I love it when Theo finally made the first move on ch.124~125. GOD! FINALLY!!! It took you guys 120+ chapters at least. Looking forward to more~ 🥰

First time giving a review, but I really enjoyed this story. It's the type of novel you look forward to every week for an update. May change/edit this again after the completion of the novel. But it's a worthwhile read so give it a try.

And this might be totally unrelated to giving a review but may I add how good the quality of translation is. Thank you Translator for sharing this work with us.

Also, if you have read the novel and felt kinda attacked or antagonized by some point of this review, well idgaf about what you feel. I'm only stating my OWN opinion like any other readers 😊 <<less

Finally a BL where the MC isn't your typical pansy.

  • Offence meant. I've read so many BL where the MC doesn't even act like a man and can't actually fight to save their own life.
Added bonus of actual fight scenes, an actual story with action and lastly, an intriguing relationship development between Luke and Theo.

  • When I first saw the title, I rolled my eyes as I've seen how bad stories like this are with the word "villain" in it.
  • Usually the MC is totally out of character just for the sake of romantic progression.
I'm glad this story, so far, has been relatively free of annoying cliches and they weren't childhood friends either.

Will update my review, but so far I'm liking it.

The main character starts off pretty strong. He's cool, unpredictable, and almost unbeatable. However I dropped it as he starts getting weaker, more s*upid, and less impressive in comparison to the love interest. I don't want to read a story where the MC becomes a damsel. It's so lazy for the author to contribute to this plague of a trope.

RECOMMENDED!!!

The story starts out slow but it does develop the story's setting quite nicely. This novel does remind me a bit of Tanya the Evil, with the military and all. But these two stories are not the same though ^^

The protagonist is super mysterious and he's also so cool! He's definitely a complex character that might have the most depressing and interesting backstory in the story. Luke is definitely my favorite character so far.

The male lead is written to be a normal person for once! He doesn't immediately fall in... more>> love with the protagonist but instead their dynamic resembles the Rivals to Lovers trope. I like seeing Theo's POV since it's quite funny.

The side characters are pretty believable and I like them so far. I do wish an important female character would be introduced soon, so we can get more insight into how this world works. Considering the fact that women can enter the military in this novel.

Thank you so much, Translators! 💛✨ <<less

This started off really interesting, I loved the premise and the MC and I was looking forward to seeing the development of his relationship with the ML after he leaves the military. But as the story went on somehow MC becomes so much ditzier and plays into all the BL tropes of being weaker and less intelligent and needing to be saved by ML over and over, even though they'd been they'd been seen as equals until then. I found myself very frustrated by the plot-imposed long-term restriction on his... more>> strength which felt entirely intended to make him rely on ML. And it just became incredibly boring to me because his character felt so different to what I grew invested in and reading new chapters was frustrating instead of fun.

Maybe I'll give this another go once the story's progressed some more to see where things end up, but for now this feels like just another bland cliche with a cute, dumb MC and his strong, protective ML. Don't get me wrong, I'll absolutely indulge in the trope-iest of stories when the mood strikes me but I like to know what I'm in for. This story was made much more disappointing by how much I enjoyed the start when MC came across sharp and more than capable of taking care of things himself, even if he was playing the role of a villain I wasn't expecting the more interesting parts of his character to disappear once he stopped.

Spoiler

In fact a lot of his supposed villainous actions are just misconstrued to paint him in a bad light, made worse by him playing into the role with his attitude. My hope when I started reading was to see other characters eventually have that realisation without significant change to the core of his own character after he dropped the act.

Frankly this is the problem with many authors.

!!!CONTAINS SPOILERS AND RANTS!!!

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

This is a biased Review!

1st half (60 chapters)

Spoiler

MC starts off almost equal to ML, a rival.

But when he leaves the military and meets ML, he gets manipulated within 10 sentences. ML acts righteous but resorts to threatening MC. MC being a commoner really didn't want to make his life uncomfortable. So I get that he goes with the flow, but MC could definitely have done something about it instead of being led by the thumb. Seriously within 2 chapters of meeting ML everything was agreed on, there was no thrill or tension. I would have liked it if the author had made ML actually work hard for it, instead of using MC so easily. The more I read, the more I get frustrated. It would have been fine if ML was actually a good person. He is stoic and a man of few words who goes by the protocol. Where does he get to act righteous when he is clearly threatening a Civillian MC. MC living comfortable life, gets pulled into the madness of military because ML feels uncomfortable with MC's absence.

In the chapters of MC leaving the military and after meeting ML. He gets pushed by 2 common men!!

Like really?! Are you saying this is just because MC has stopped training for 8 months, but is still able to hunt high ranking monsters.

One was the village chiefs son, he accidentally gets pushed by his body weight and falls. Okay!! Let's say he got startled, then ML enters, gets angry, pulls the man away, then asks MC if he is having a lover.

2nd when MC is exhausted, he collides with a person in the crowd almost falling. But ML pulls him over and asks him to hold his robe to not lose way!

I mean... rolls eyes

Can the author please write a strong shou without him having to always be behind ML. I can definitely sense that MC got everything through his hard work. His body, height, muscle isn't as high as ML. So I can sense that after he stopped training that the gap between them will further continue to widen. But not to the point where walking around normal commoners need ML's help for MC.

And there is an issue about the banter as well. In the beginning of the story, both MC and ML were on each other's throats. Sometimes one wins and the other times, the other one wins. Even if MC loses, it was due to his position of being in military where he had to follow orders.

After MC meets ML he gets manipulated easily by ML. ML who is known for righteousness even threatens MC. MC being a curious kid and thinking it would be more problematic of surveillance agrees. It was agreed that MC is extremely smart to equal ML or second to ML. But he gets used around very easily. The problem isn't the outcome, since it was decided that for the progress of the plot both definitely had to go together. The problem was the execution!! There was not much banter or thrill. It was done as easily as in 10 sentence and within 2 chapters. There was no mystery, no jabs, no highs or lows for conversation. ML took MC as easy as kidnapping a child with a candy!!

The third problem, ML's over righteousness!!! MC does get into verbal spats, talks down to others, doesn't like carrying dead weight of his soldiers. But he does duty well. What's wrong with a commoner wanting to be at a high position. Does being in 2nd place all throughout life, takeaway a person to never be first place or dream about it. The soldiers constantly break protocols and talk sh*t about him. Everyone knows but does nothing. He saved them so many times. But just because they act in groups and hyena who know to chummy others, and are jealous. He deserves it?!

In more than 5 years of military did no one realize that he has saved their ass all the time. He has never ab*sed his authority. Never gave them orders that put them in danger, or do something illegal. Where did they have the audacity to judge MC? Where is he a villain? They themselves are parts of the hundreds, but they have the audacity to have an opinion on number 2 rank in military?! They can't get themselves higher but use ML as a pedestal and try to be under his ship, and justify their s*upid bullying behavior. That Miles character is the worst. Is he even a Military captain? He can get away with buying soldiers and tripping others, but still behaves righteous? Disgusting filth!!

Ml is even worst, why did he say that he is disappointed in MC. You can't sort out the entire situation. You put sh*t in your mouth when speaking?! Just because MC said something without even glancing a second thought you put the blame on him? He uses his position and high authority all the time like this. He doesn't protect or stop the rumors and bad mouthing and goes along the flow! I thought maybe because the words of soldiers shouldn't be controlled too much, he turned a blind eye. But then I realized that he himself actually holds those beliefs!!

And people blame MC for not speaking out! MC is playing a villain role according to his own choice, so he deserves it! But frankly if everyone is a good character as they say they are. Then they should understand the weight MC carries in his missions. The work he excels, the number of lives he saved. Does him leaving the military made them realize his importance. No! it was the burden which he was carrying all along on his shoulders that fell on them now, it made them wake up from their slumber. If MC had actually stayed in Military, they would have bullied him so bad. If there was an actual person who didn't know the situation and with pride and little EQ, either he would have killed himself or cause a coup de et. Then they would even use their righteous words as stones and stone the villain to death! It reminds me of the saying:

It's not that life has been too easy for you, it's just that someone was carrying all your burden for you!

MC is too kind for his own good. I don't even like the Fael guy, he was ready to kill the N number of soldiers to keep his mother alive. Kill his superior officer and get him loose all his hard work. If successful he would have said, anyway the MC was always bad, I have slain the evil dragon. No guilt from me.

I didn't like the goody too shoes attitude of MC. He should have just played the villain and brought the truth to light. Maybe that's me who is ruthless. But frankly people who switch sides like that, have never been to my 'good guy' list! Albiet MC turns the situation around, and that guy becomes one of the most loyal people. But I just don't like him.

I can understand the MC's pov

I can understand the ML's pov.

But MC is like my baby, all his wrongs are circumstances to me, all his rights are glorified!!!

I am like MC's friend, who sees MC in a bad situation, gets led by the nose. Love him and hate him for his personality and character. And want to shake the hell out of his shoulders, asking his why?!! Why go through so much trouble?? That shitty ML is not worth it. Those back stabbing subordinates aren't worth it! Those other captains aren't worth it. Just live your life in peace and for yourself. Don't get carried away by the novel plot. Wake up! Wake up, please live peacefully without having to deal with the buzzing mosquito ML!

And if he was anyway gonna work for the military and with ML at the end, why even quit his high ranking position. He doesn't get money from monsters slayed, gets blackmailed instead.

Loses position of captain, demoted to a commoner.

Didn't want to be bossed around by the ML. Only to end up in a position where he can't even say No, since he is just a commoner now. Having absolutely no authority and defense

Of course I know this is not because he is doing it voluntarily. It's involuntary reaction of MC to try to be close to the ML. In those entire world without a family, MC's goal was success of ML. Now in an unknown world without anyone close by, he gets his sense of security by being close to ML involuntarily. Cause he knows no one there and has no emotional ties with others. Except for the ML. For the past 5 to 7 years his only goal was ML. Now he is willing to be led by ML for that sense of his worth, unconsciously and slowly the thread keeps pulling him

And ML isn't as bad as I described in the novel. He is amazing in his own sense. But in the review I just described his bad points. Of course he is the ML, he has his own plus points and he did many things for the MC and for his good.

[collapse]

But my fingers hurt while typing this long review... And he is not worth for me to write few more sentences.

If you wanna know, you can just read the novel!

As for the rating, you can see above. Since I liked this novel, despite the frustrating cliche aspect of it!

2nd Half 61-113:

Spoiler

The ML redeems himself!! Theo I love you!! You take everything step by step, first he understood his own feelings and seeing how MC is dense, he became vocal about it. Through little actions, little words, little compliments, he swoons MC over. He gives MC to understand his own feelings and never rushes. Learns to understand and respect MC even more.

I say this man is already head over heels. He keeps gazing and getting lost in MC. Every little action of MC is turned into something cute or sexy by him.

This man has a seperate filter for his own man!!! He even uses his authority to address the wrongdoings of the men of army and does his best to protect MC and gives him his well earned respect. Of course the major part of the change of opinion is because of MC himself. He doesn't act like a villain anymore and doesn't do any villainous shit. He let's go of his uninhibited self and people just love MC and people respect him on his own. Of course, it is also because the soldiers realise how much the MC carried the team out!!

I just love how the author actually wrote a slow burn which isn't just a name say slow burn but every step makes a little progress. Every conversation holds it's place and brings them together.

I have read many slow burns, but the one where both the leads balance each other in terms of talent, respect, position, mutual pining is very rare!! So adorable. I am glad that I got through the ugly part, that's why the second half felt even sweet!!

if your looking for an action heavy military novel with tons of conflict with expansive world building this is NOT it..

but!! If your looking for a lovely romance with our MC (luke) and ML (theo) whose very possessive (not overbearing, , still a green flag, though he does have some questionable moments) then you won't be disappointed!

the MC is very lovable; smart, strong, and kind, although he is denser than a diamond. He's an excellent narrator and he's very funny. While the ML is also quite likable, strong, and he's... more>> obsessed with our MC. He's always had a fixation on our MC and never treated him negativity like the others. the plots not very conflict/action heavy (ahem, Bermuda (excellent novel similar to this PLEASE read it)) but rather it's almost like a character study? Anyways one of the thing I adore about this novel is how realistic the characters are, , they don't fall in love easily (actually 100 chps in and they've JUST realized). Additionally the way side characters treat the MC is very infuriating but also makes sense in a way?? He constantly acts arrogant, rude, etc etc (dw, it's ALL AN ACT) so all the characters don't like him, , it's pretty refreshing and realistic imo. anyways just read it!! The translation is very fast and accurate and it's literally caught up to the novel, , very good read if you're looking for a power couple!!

Although I got hard baited bc 116 chps in and there's NO R-18 SCENES?? I loike through the KR Raws too and as of chp116, there's no smut even though it was tagged 🤕🤕 <<less

Ahhh it's so good I love the MC and ML dynamics.

Great read if you want magic, military and the historical/medieval times

Spoiler

I'm also loving this arc when MC runs away and ML chases behind. I can't help but love it when MC's go through with their decision of obtaining the life they want, just like Luke. I love the dynamic of how he went from acting as his arrogant commander self to his kind self after retiring. Can't wait for the reveal when everyone, and cough ML, learns that Luke isn't the villain facade he puts up, but just a kind soul that actually helps everyone behind his harsh actions.🤭

Same opinion as a few other reviewers with 3 stars, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the premise of the story. The start was so strong, the MC Luke was great, he was snarky, provocative, reckless, confident and everything you'd expect for someone playing the villain role. But after? Well...

When he leaves the military, I was a little apprehensive since I wondered how the story/plot would go, and hoped it would go in a satisfying way where the plot is still relevant (which it is), however, the protagonist, Luke, unfortunately falls short... more>> of standards afterwards.

I understand that the villainous persona he portrayed in the military is not his true self. However, after acting the part for so long, it should still be difficult to revert back to your old self, as acting as someone you're not for a really long time will, one way or another, affect you to a degree (great examples include Jack from Pandora Hearts and Furina from Genshin Impact, if you've ever watched or played them), and it'd be nice to hear debates about this but the novel doesn't explicitly say when Luke joined the army and how long he's kept this act up so eh.

I began really despising how weak and sloppy he became as a person after leaving the military, and how the ML just sorta... idk, sees his appearance in a romantic way (which is fine) but something about it just feels off putting and I can't quite put my finger on it. Anyways, the more I read, the more I realised that it's probably the author, because I assumed Luke was a smart person but in reality... I don't think that's the case at all. But mostly, I don't like how sloppy he is around the ML and the forced proximity (okay, I think I found the issue now) just feels wrong to me, like it wasn't done right. But it makes sense if the author couldn't think of a better way to force the MC and ML to interact with each other and develop a romance considering their positions would genuinely make it difficult for them to ever meet again (recently retired soldier x new commander) sounds very hard to write without a plot connecting them together, which fortunately, works in this case. I think I probably also know why I don't like the romance as much as I thought I would, and this is mainly due to the fact that I thought the romance would be something like enemies to lovers or rivals to lovers, but instead it's more like both sides don't hate/dislike each other at all. However, Luke actively showed that he didn't like Theo (and honestly I'd say antagonised but he doesn't do anything to sabotage Theo) while he was in the military and one thing I hated was that Theo and Luke's interactions during the military weren't fleshed out enough which ends up falling flat when we get Theo's thoughts about how different Luke is now compared to the past, we have to rely on the fact that we're told Luke and Theo don't get along (in Luke's 3 rd person perspective) and make up scenes ourselves about their 'clashings' as rival colleagues.

Overall, strong start being extremely entertaining, middle was mildly entertaining with a bit of wonder on what would happen and then when you hit around 100, you begin to lose interest for some reason without being able to pinpoint it for a while until it hits you. My main issue was MC becoming a weakling (I hate the trope where whenever the MC is strong at the start, the author always has to find ways to "weaken" or put "limitations' on their power, and I really hoped it wouldn't happen to Luke, but it did, and that's probably what triggered me to lose interest the most out of everything) and maybe MC and ML's relationship development I guess. The plot is still highly interesting tho and I do want to see where it goes, but with Luke handicapped like this and probably, for a long time, will need to rely on the ML, turns me off the story highly so unfortunately, I can't give this novel a rating higher than a 3. <<less

Looks promising! It's interesting! I'm not a fan of some serious military background plot. Such a dizzy topic. But this one is very ok because it's not so deep explore about strategy war thingy, more about the main cp development and their conflict, plus the problem in work that can lead to war or peace of course. Some Fantasy Spice like magic, monster and medieval empire thingy make this story more edible for someone like me. I really love to see the main cp developt their feeling, despite in the... more>> love and hate situation. I like how the MC looks so tough but still softie, and how the ML slowly try to understand MC and himself. Waiting for the burn stage and more clear plot. <<less
