“You’re a video game otaku, you’re disgusting!”

That’s the word that got me dumped by my childhood friend, Ema Ichinose, whom I had a crush on.

It is true that to the average person, I, Ryo Takamori, would look like just another video game geek.
I should look like that because I play games on my computer every day when I go home.

However, Ryo is not just a game geek.
He is a well-known figure in the gaming industry and a winner of a world e-sports tournament.

Ryo is surrounded by many people in the industry, including pro-gamers, popular Vtubers, and famous idols.
Ryo is once again aiming for the top of the world championships.

This is the story of Ryo Takamori, a genius pro-gamer who almost lost his motivation after being dumped by his childhood friend, and how he creates a new legend with the support and help of the people around him.

if anyone wonder why this novel gets lots of negative review. One of the reason is on the conversation MC towards all characters including the heroine. The conversation or dialogue was pretty much a short talk and that's it. For example : "How are you" and "Thank you, I am fine" switch to another topic "A-san, I heard you good at shooting games" followed by "B-san, I know you also good at sniping". Stiff dialogue is Stiff

The author of this isn't writing a story, they're writing what amounts to a play by play of a fictional game and an ego stroking of what has to be the most two dimensional character to ever exist. I only give it two stars because the TL does a great job with an otherwise bland novel.

The translation is fine, but the story content itself is best expressed by chapter 12 where you're told that "it was the beginning of the legend" at the end and your immediate retort is "seriously? Where?!" Yeah... the story is heavy on claims but light on content.

Spoiler

It kinda cheeses me off how the author writes "she was a very beautiful girl like an angel" but the only description that we get is that she has long black hair and trendy clothes. Apparently her very minute gestures are supposedly cute... whatever that means.. Must be reeeeeallly beautiful or something if her fingers are drawing his interest on the first meeting. Stunning for someone with black hair and trendy clothes...

Also, I wouldn't read this story for the game streaming session. The author writes it in a way that's not very exciting. Umm, they relay what's happening but not why it's happening. So move here. Move there. Say something. Shoot. Enemy dies. Move here. Shoot. Headshot...

At the very least, explain why you switched from an assault rifle to a sniper rifle just to hit someone running by.

Really tedious to read.

Feels like a third of the chapters are descriptions of them playing apex legends, but so bland that I would rather literally just boot up apex.

Most game sessions boil down to this:

I switched guns.

I moved up.

I fired my gun.

I threw a grenade.

I won.

Wow, that was a fun read.

With this story it follows a decent amount of tropes, the childhood friend rejecting MC and later regretting it, beautiful girl getting close with MC, ect. but the issue is the author didn't add any details to any of these plotlines making this book feel hollow. As an example we start with the confession, with little introduction (or none, can't remember) he confesses to his childhood friend and then she rejects him and goes on a date with her boyfriend... When this scene thats suppose to be somewhat major for... more>> the plot happens I as a reader barely care because there is no buildup... The author needed to add a chapter before of him deciding to confess and maybe a bit of an explanation about their relationship, it doesn't need to be much but at least something to make readers emphasize with the MC. Then the scene loses a lot more value when he goes home and is depressed for all of 3 seconds until his sister asks if he wants to fondle her ti*s (I know the line is a joke, the part I dislike is how this is enough for him to get over his heartbreak) and then thats just the end of his depression... Its hard to explain in a summary but theres just not enough detail for readers to care about the main character. If the story had a line about him being sad for a while and then after meeting heroine at the start he thinks "She reminds me of childhood friend" or other lines associating the two and as he and heroine get closer those lines appear less and less... By doing this you are both making the main character more realistic while also setting up for the big regret the childhood friend has, when that scene happened it barely felt like anything was going on... You don't even get a sense of satisfaction from her being upset since her character is so shallow... All we have is her rejecting him harshly, and with the way he rejected her I have a hard time believing that they stayed friends for so long since they obviously have different interests and she has no intention of accepting his, and then the next time we see her we get that her boyfriend cheated on her... Then she noticed that MC was famous so she went to get with him because he makes a lot... So when he rejects her it doesn't change anything... The only thing we have to dislike about her is that she rejected the MC harshly and that she wanted to get together with him for the money, but both of these traits seem shoehorned in by the author for plot... the rejection was harsh because the author is probably copying other novels and its not really satisfying to read "Will you go out with me" "Sorry, I have a boyfriend" and the gold digger part was just because the author needed some reason to make her want to get together with him. Overall it just leads up to her character having so little development that I don't care at all when the face-slapping scene happened...

The lack of details is just way too big of a negative for this novel to be good, I just finished reading this but I can't tell you a single personality trait of the main character or heroine. Overall it has potential, from what I can tell the only major issue with the novel is how little detail and development there is, but that demerit is so strong that it makes this story difficult to enjoy, its not possible (at least for me) to care about any of the characters at all, even if that care is just mild interest. Generally the best stories are the ones that make you feel a lot, where you actually want to cry or feel choked up at sad scenes, decent books are the ones where you want to know what happens next but your not that invested, and bad books in my opinion are the ones where you have zero interest in whats occurring (whether this is caused by bad translation, poor storyline, or flat characters) and with this book the characters are too flat to make me care even the littlest bit about whats going to occur. <<less

Seems alright, you don't need to be an expert at the games to understand what's going on unlike so many other gamer light novels, otherwise a romance story with a sideplot of a face-slapping fest aimed at a mean greedy superficial childhood 'friend' that's a bit slow to start up- ch 20 and ch 23 for anyone interested more in the faceslaps than anything else like me. If MC had told his childhood friend about his popular stream and winning a global gaming competition in advance of his confession we'd... more>> be looking at a very different story; who doesn't tell a friend such a big thing? Also the author clearly didn't even try for the title, what a mouthful. <<less

I haven't read it fully yet but I'm in a like / hate relationship with this story

I'll just get the negatives out of the way. I feel that there's not much content despite there being 70 chapters already. The chapters are pretty short and the conversations have little to no flavor. Of course I also don't like some of the needless pe*verted stuff the story has like his own sister offering him to fondle her tits. But it's japan, what should I be expecting? Also the game aspect which is... more>> supposed to basically be the spine of the story needs a bit more to it as well. The process of the matches are skeletal at most in explanation. You can totally tell that this writer is a novice at best.

But moving onto the more positive aspects of the story! Such as: The non inclusion of needless drama so far, the atmosphere between him and the girl he's streaming with is pretty fluffy, and the guy has a decent relationship with his family. Which is why he was able to get over his rejection rather easily. Now speaking of the rejection, a lot of people are saying that we needed a bit more context before the confession. While I do somewhat agree, I kinda see it as the actual basis for their relationship. To me no context basically just tells me they didn't have as close of a relationship as one would think for childhood friends. He had a crush on her at most, but at the end of the day it's not like they were close to each other at all. Especially to the point where she basically shames him and rubs it in that she's already taken. This would also somewhat explain why she didn't notice the actual specs of the MC. If they were close she would've known that he was loaded and would've probably spoiled her more rotten than she already was. I stopped reading at around the MC really started to do duos with his new love interest and I do plan to pick it back up soon. I'll do a continuation then, I just felt like writing my current thoughts on it. I think this novelist does have decent potential, they just really need to add flesh to this skeleton of a novel. <<less

Alright, I made an account just to say its really not as bad as reviews made it out to be. There’s a lot of simplicity in dialogues but it really don’t feel that out of place, mainly because its more of a relaxing slice of life with minor “revenge”. It really doesnt warrent the 1.7* treatment. The gaming callouts are also quite realistic. No one fricking writes sth like “as I move forward at an increasing pace, the enemy took notice and tried to pull out his weapon. As he... more>> did, I pulled out my glock aiming directly at his rifle’s trigger blah blah (sorry I cant write novels, just a reader) ” scene for a goddamn apex legends game. Its literally the best way to describe pro’s mentality and professional in game callouts. Whatever im ranting too much. Its not a godsend but its not a 1.7 read is what im trying to say. Thanks for not hating my s*upid a** <<less
