Cons:

He always depends on pills and demonic cores to cultivate.

after foundation building he got cut off from spiritual energy. He spends too much money on cultivation. If this goes by no one can upgrade their cultivation.

he always makes enemy everywhere and gets noticed by powerful cultivators.

This is the first Web Novel I ever read. 8t was recommended to me by my wife.

Yes, it is long. However this was her pick after I told her about my favorite childhood films about strong Asians doing kung Fu in the air and flying around. Yes it's not cultivation and since I'm new to this it's close enough.

Novel is great. I really like the main character. The back story, the growth, the journey. It really resonated with me. What makes this novel so long is the detailed world building.

In... more>> any case this is one of my favorite novels of all time. <<less

This novel has a special place in my heart: I actually started reading it 3 times but stopped because the start seemed so boring to me. Looking closer I began to notice glimpses of something different.I think at chapter 80 I experienced the stubbornes of the main character and I was intrigued how far he can go.

Light spoiler: To paint a picture of our main character : I remember that he went to an auction and realized that one item might be really special. The problem: a sect also wanted... more>> it and kept bidding. Our MC quickly realized that the sect reprezentative will not let this go because now it became a problem of face so the price will surely increase beyond what he could afford and he always has money problems so he just steals it - I think the whole thing lasted a few seconds and the people there were too stunned to react : what happens after is comedy gold.

Light spoiler done: I recommend reading this novel but it might not be for everyone (I would also advise to not give up on it until you reach chapter 300 or so just so you can see if it's for you or not) <<less

I think this was my first real Xianxia novel, and it was an experience. It starts of with you expecting something and then Jumps a Massive Shark from which there was no returning and my brain tried really hard to stay invested with basically everyone being dead, but at the end lost focus. Like cultivation science fiction. Very strange.

Haowie was great though, so it hurt to see him constantly knocked down. The romance could have obviously been ignored, but it wasn't the worst, at least Meng Hao wasn't tr*sh. I... more>> preferred when he was just adventuring, not whatever happened when that had to end.

Meng Hao's turtle was my fav character probably, not Lord Fifth the serial rapist, lol. Several arcs made me cry, no mouthfuls of blood though, until the Alien Invasion, then I died and had to be revived. The insane levels of blatant f**kery just made me sad after that. <<less

So the MC, Meng Hao's personality changed a lot through the novel but his love for money and treasures never changed, and that characteristic of his is what makes me like him. He's ruthless, shameless and quite mischevious. But this is an Er Gen novel so the MC will of course have to suffer or it wouldn't be an Er Gen novel.

Meng Hao is one of the MC's that has very thick plot armor. Even though it saves him countless times, I dislike it a lot. He dies then gets... more>> resurrected or he almost dies and when everyone thinks he is dead, he appears suddenly like a f*cking demon.

Meng Hao also saves or kidnaps jade beauties (I would've give examples but I finished ISSTH months ago so I don't remember much) which I find very annoying, I mean why would someone save or kidnap a person that probably has no use for himself/herself. I'm a Chu Yuyan fangirl so she's excluded also she had a use for Meng Hao.

Then there's Meng Hao's heaven-defying luck, it helps him to gain lots of treasures and save him like his thick plot armor. He basically advances to the next cultivation realms with his luck and a little bit hardwork. Good thing that sometimes Er Gen makes him have sh*t luck.

I don't think I have to talk about the world-build or other characters since they're similiar to generic xianxia novels but I think the hidden ancient cultivation realms were absolutely bullshit.

Overall It was a good read but it still can't be compared to Renegade Immortal. <<less

Just finished reading ISSTH, and it was epic.

Er Gens' world of cultivations in his successive books add up and this book had brought most of the conclusions for the mysteries.

Meng Hao and his journey to the pinnacle was filled with curiosity, excitement, pain, and finally content happiness.

So fellow Daoists who have yet read this book, please do give it a try.

I absolutely loved it!!

It was a fun read where I never felt that it was repetitive. I'd recommend this a lot. The character development and abilities are cool. The only thing is that plot armor exists.

After reading A will Eternal, I came to know Er Gen. I didn't expect too much but it was a good experience so I decided to read another book from him and because of "ISSTH IS THE BEST" I gave it a shot.

Honestly it didn't measure up to AWE, I'm not saying it was bad but it wasn't good either.

I'm going to start with things I didn't like:

1) the main romantic relationship doesn't make sense. Their whole relationship is based on one pill. They are barely in touch and don't... more>> see each other often. So how do they develop a romantic relationship I'm not sure. And it's not just her every other girl will fall for MC on some point and I'm sitting here like WHAT???

2) I'm not sure about you but I'm just sick and tired of MC getting provoked by young masters. I mean there must be better ways to write a story.

Spoiler

3) author sometimes would write something that makes you feel like you've read +300 chapter for nothing first example is when he severe his perfect foundation or when he kills and revive the main chick or in final ark when the MC rebuild nine mountains and seas but then in following chapters it will get destroyed when 1000000000 years pass (in one or two chapter

[collapse]

4) most annoying thing for me is none of above it's author counting years or measuring length of things. It's like you spend those years 'first a year passed then 2 years then 3 years then 10 years then 100 years' at this point you think it's over by no 'but it was not over then 120 years then...' you get the idea.

5) author keeps telling you that MC have scholar aura to him but I don't get it. Why ? Just because you read some books and you fail imperial exam doesn't make you scholar. His actions don't match this supposedly scholarism. He's a brutal dude who when provoked will kill entire guy's clan.

6) author insist that MC was greedy for money but it's not like that at all. Sure from start he was in need for money (the dept thing) but the greedyness (if that's not a word I just invented) started from 200-300 or somewhere in between.

Spoiler

7) The lives of clone was more interesting to me than story overall. Sorry not sorry

[collapse]

8) Fight scenes.

9) There is no solid power system. MC can fight someone one or two realms above him and come out alive if not winner.

Spoiler

10) plot twists are all wtf. The betrayal of Chen Fen and Han bei was maddening to me

[collapse]

Things I liked:

1) the writing is actually good (not the structure of story but rather how he describes the scenery and other things) you can see it's not author's first novel

2) THIRD LORD AND FIFTH LORD RULES

3) good quality translation really helped this novel. If it wasn't for the translator I think I would've read the novel until the end especially when author tends to bring back characters from 400 or 500 chapter ago. Round of applause for DEATBLADE <<less

A Xianxia that doesn't take itself too seriously, but has some serious moments. I think this is one of the best Chinese Novels on this website. I finished this story years ago and I still remember some of the minor characters. Many memes have also been born from this not so hidden gem. If you are having trouble decided if you want to read it or not, I say give it a shot. It's really good.

This story easily has the best translation quality I have ever seen. I can see why deathblade has such a following for any story he translates. He really does do a great job with notes and insights. Er Gen novels love to go back to earlier parts of the story (or previous stories) and most references are noted for you. It really helps with recalling who this dude is and why he came back.

I like the MC and his followers. This has also been the only story where I have... more>> actually laughed out loud. If there was a spin off with Patriarch Reliance, Lord Fifth, and Lord Third I would absolutely read it.

The story starts off to be fairly boring and the MC has pretty much 0 talent aside from being greedy for money. I think it picks up after a few arcs and stays very enjoyable until Book 9. The tone change from then on made it a challenge to finish.

Spoiler

The war with the 33 heavens honestly killed the story for me. Turning two characters into short term use items was really lame.

[collapse]

What happens after Renegade Immortal and Pursuit of the Truth are shown in this story. It gets a little spoilery when these characters get mentioned while they are not mentioned by their names from their novels, it is obvious who they are.

The main relationship in the story is kind of poorly written and doesn't make sense. These two have very little contact / conversations to have the relationship seem feesible. I do like the mentors that show up and that not every character is super arrogant or evil for no reason. Some of the characters I expected to have a battle with kind of get thrown into the dumpster and that was a little disappointing.

I would say this story is worth reading / finishing. The ending was good and if you are at Book 9 just know finishing the story is worth it! <<less

Well I read this years ago so this review is based on my memory of it.

It was good overall but has melted into other XianXia and cultivation novels. I read it from start to end and the only thing I still enjoy is the odd comment that references lord fifth. More for the nostalgia than anything. I've read shorter and better but am thankful this one was less than 1500 chapters.

The novel is really great, with good humour and some very touching moments, but unfortunately falls apart at the seams midway through the story. It manages to patch itself together again by the end, but never regains the charm it had in the beginning.

thought I wrote a review but I guess not. This starts out very well and I really like the MC's shameless, impish personality; he's so money-focused and that continues on through a good part of the story. Even with the filler and occasional chapter-long ramblings I really liked the story until the outsider war, which is where my attention started to flag. That's no surprise, I had the same problem with MW and other novels with the same theme. The last 1/4 loses the humor that kept me interested plus... more>> there were several things the MC did/ choices he made that I didn't like or enjoy reading about. The wrap-up chapters were alright and some humor comes back. also, the sparse romance didn't make sense. He barely spends time with the FL, she's missing for 90% of the story and we don't know much about her or why he suddenly falls in love with her after not seeing her for a hundred plus years.
Spoiler

the woman he does spend time with during his formative years and who has an actual character we get to know never has a chance.

[collapse]
for most of the series, this is a 4.5, but I would rate the end about a 3. I want to rate it at 3.5. Honestly, if I read this again I would just stop at the start of the outsider war and not put myself through the end. <<less

Amazing, a roller coaster ride of a lot of emotions. The only problem is that author really likes to exaggerate things sometimes and there are no answers to to things sometimes but it is still enjoyable, this is the first completed novel I read a long time ago. It was really good.

The MC in this story is fairly likable and quite smart, which is unlike many other novels where the author simply says that the MC is smart and writes otherwise. The MC of this story is definitely a plus.

One of the main gripes that I have with this novel is that most things that the MC gets becomes completely obsolete despite being described as important or powerful. This makes you feel like the items were overhyped or simply underwhelming.

Another main gripe I have is with the war arcs. The initial... more>> few war arcs were fine, even quite good but the last few felt quite dragged out and long winded.

Lastly,

Spoiler

A big minus for the romance. The love interest that had actual character development, Chu Yuyan, only get an ambiguous ending. While Xu Qing who is not there in 90% of the story is somehow the main female lead with a small reason for falling for MC.

[collapse]

Overall other than the few cons above a very great novel with an ending that ties it up almost perfectly and which also have some of the best done arcs I have read.

Eg:
Spoiler

the Alchemy arc. Personally also liked the arc with the seal the heaven hex creation and Yan'er towards the end.

Overall, it's a pretty good story. The authors writing ability is mediocre at best, and it's utterly cram-packed with filler. But, if you can get past that, it's a good read. Personally, as the story progressed, I ended up skimming a lot of chapters. After a while, you get a feel for when the author is going to paste paragraphs of mindless and pointless drivel to increase his word count.

This is one of the top novels I've read. Truly, plot is interesting. Fun and enjoyable adventures. The parrot and the jelly really added that cherry on top of this tasty pie. It was an absolute blast.

Besides one thing, which made me so mad that I couldn't help but removing 1 star. Romance... man... my poor Chu Yuyan... she did not deserve this... it felt horrible how she was treated throughout the entire story. ... more>>
Spoiler

She was, imho, the best girl, unlike this bland 1-dmensional Xu Qing

One of the best novels I read so far. Er Gen is a really good author and death blade a good translator so the result is really enjoyable!

This novel transports you in Er Gen world with a never ending encapsulated universe. The MC is not fake or too something, he'll struggle while looking for perfection and understanding the laws of the universe. It can tend to be philosophical or poetic at times and not at all versed in the harem shitty thing you could find in almost all other novels.

I... more>> really recommend it, you won't be disappointed! <<less

Funny, entertaining, well translated, but the story can drag at times and the main character is a real Mary Sue.

The fight scenes are sometimes nonsensical. For example there's a scene in an enclosed arena where the dimensions are spelled out where it describes "mountains" being summoned and hurled at an opponent. That is impossible to visualize, unless the mountains are just tiny, mountain shaped boulders, maybe?

I think it'd be hard to find an author who does humour better in any of the other novels referenced on this site though.
