the male lead is an idiot and the female lead for someone who does not want to be recognized, does the opposite, not to metion how s*upid she is

the premise is good but the execution is just bad

First of all, Rain of Snow has the best translations and this novel is no exception--super well translated and reads easily like a typical American novel that's gone through a publishing house (impressive for a small team to accomplish!). 5/5 stars on that front.

The major reason I've started to dislike this novel is because our ML sucks and the second male lead is literally the perfect man for the FL. I truly hope this story is about the FL getting over her first love (a man who betrayed her for... more>> Shenil & never loved her even when she was right next to him for so many years), and finding love in a man who fell in love with her for who she truly is (right away). But as of right not I doubt that will happen. The Korean raws comments are not giving me hope on this front. This web novel is making me pull my hair out with frustration.

Quick summary of book (I'm really not giving much away because this much info is within the first 20 chapters but I'm marking as a spoiler in case you don't want that) :

  • Our FL was originally the Emperor's right hand man and captain of the imperial knights. She was in love with the Emperor. She never revealed her love to him, and she also hid the fact that she had a terminal medical condition.
  • There is a woman named Shenil who lives in the Imperial Palace with the Emperor. She is evil and obsessed with the Emperor & wants to get married for political power. The Emperor does not realize that she's evil. When Shenil sees how close the FL is with the Emperor, she devises a plan to kill off our FL by pretending the FL poisoned her.
  • Our FL gets thrown into prison, Emperor comes & he doesn't believe in her. FL ends up dying of her illness and it is considered a su*cide because no one knew about her illness
  • FL reincarnates/transmitigates to the body of a princess from the neighboring country. The country is close to the Emperor's country, so she has to go live in the Emperor's palace for a little bit (it's part of some deal--royal children must spend time in the others' countries... it's a pact that goes back generations in the royal family).
  • FL is now back in the palace, but as a princess. Shenil is still up to her old tricks.

I LOVE the concept of this story. However, the execution has been terrible. The Emperor is supposed to be the ML. Ok, well then make him ML quality? He doesn't list to our FL, he has sided with Shenil over and over, ignored glaring red flags, etc. He is the worst of worst ML's I've read in a little while. By the way, why is he so close with Shenil? The author hasn't explained why he likes and trusts her so much besides some random story about how she broke her leg when she was a kid due to the Emperor (he was also a kid at the time)... like what? That's how she has such a hold over the Emperor of a whole kingdom?

The Korean raws are past 110+ chapters and the comments are flooded with people asking the author to make the ML the other major male character (this duke guy named Chaylen who is AMAZING). However, will the author switch it? I'm not sure!

This other guy (Chaylen) is most likely the second male lead, but he is such a good match for the FL. He has fallen for the FL for who she is--not because of the fact she used to be El, or because she's a princess, etc. He met her randomly and had no idea who she was, but he liked her. They accidentally ran into each other a total of 3 times without ever exchanging contact info--that is fate. He trusts her, considers her a close friend, and supports her dreams and hopes without question

Overall, the Emperor aka ML seems to be a very poorly written character who lacks dimension while our FL and Chaylen are written so thoughtfully. Again, this web novel is making me pull my hair out with frustration. <<less

I can only stand reading until chap 16, so my opinion is until that chap only.

The translation is good, 5 star for this point.

The premise of the story is interesting, but the writing is weak.

... more>> From my perspective, the FL is very inconsistent and ambiguous. While she thinks she doesn't want to be recognized, she keeps dropping hints to ML like an unconcerned party.

Even in the beginning story, I think FL dug her own grave. Yeah, the antagonist tripped the FL into it, but FL actively pick the shovel and dig herself deeper when the ML is extending rope to help her. I don't understand why some readers blame the ML when the problem lies with FL herself. <<less

Sigh.. This is so.. Cringe. This is like a cheap soap operas that turned into a korean novel. Just like previous reviewers said, both the MC and ML were s*upid. The villain is unbearable cringe.

First of all, this is a 2 star review only bc of good translation.

I am a sucker for angst, MLs regretting while FL moves on, etc. Even the tr*shiest MLs (Remarried Empress, Abandoned Empress, Lady to Queen, etc) have a salvageable aspect of their personality or at least have some character development as the story unfolds.

I am 45 chapters deep, and I am sincerely hoping the emperor isn't the ML because not only is he the most naive dumbass I've seen ruling a country, he won't stop pampering that b*tch... more>> Shanil.

And the excuse for letting her run the palace like she owns it, is because "guilt" - the fact that he felt responsible when Shanil hurt herself when they were young. Like seriously, wtf. The woman's a spoiled duke's daughter, with social standing and everything she wants on the tip of her fingers. WHY IS THERE A NEED?

Added to that is the fact that he's f*cking blind to several betrayals in his court - like how the staff in his Palace are loyal to the Duke and is constantly surveilling his private life and country's affairs. They literally have him blindfolded towards everything and in the palm of their hands. Tell me, how is this man still an Emperor and his country thriving?

Another aspect is how he is "smart enough" to recognise some aspects of FL from Ellea the Princess, but cannot see the conniving b*tch personality of Shanil. I cannot. Don't even get me started on how he blew over the whole poisoning incident.

One of the commenters in the forum said "Emperor is dumb because he didn't suffer enough, no evil stepmother or stepbrother aiming for the throne" and I laughed at that bc if there was any competition to his throne, he would've insta-died due to his s*upidity.

And FL's incompetence in trying to hide from the emperor isn't doing the story any justice either.

TLDR: Idiot Emperor being shoved down our throats as ML, he can do everything despicable on the face of Earth and FL (another idiot) will not hate him despite having literally SWORN in her previous life to avoid him.

How much would I recommend this?

1/10 wouldnt recommend it unless u want utter and pure rage, there is no satisfaction from ML regret. Even if he crawls and dies from regret I get no satisfaction, only strong urge to spit in his coffin. <<less

Honestly I agree with the comment before me. I don't know why most readers always blame it on the ML solely. I mean, our MC is also at fault here. She often made a questionable decision. I just don't get her logic at all. Still, I give it 4 star for the great translation and how often they update. Anyway, it's still a readable story and not as bad as some novel I've encountered as long as you can tolerate the mc's questionable dumb decision.

The FL is dumb, the ML is dumb... I agree the novel is really well translated, but everything is too hardly believable. The emperor is way too naive to keep a schemer such this "Chenille " by his sides. She's too obvious! A s*upid villainess, who succeeds only because all the others are to weak. But it is so unrealistic. A princess comes, but she dismisses her knights, dines alone (nice hospitality, cheap emperor), goes back Alone in her room after being attacked.. (wouldn't it be an affaire d'état ?... more>> A threat to the peace between two empires??). And always retreat as soon as the witch (no the spoiled blond brat) arrives. 3 stars just because it is a good job translating. <<less

The ML is just... ugh.. so undeserved being ML.. his character is not like male lead, the way he can't see such a simple plot really leave bad taste for his impression.

I think I will be dropping this for the sake of my mental health lol I don't want to curse too much.

The FL is hypocrite, she said she wanted to forget but she always looks like someone who wants the ML's attention. If I was her, I would just ignore him. But here she always shows that she was unhappy not being loved by him.

The ML looks like a simple character that we can forget. Seriously, he let the MC die and agreed like a lover to all the villain's demand.

I will continue to read just by habit but honestly, I do not have any expectations from the story.

I’m really picky at writing reviews but this !

I’m highly disappointed in the emperor but the plot is good. I really love the FL. If u like strong FL’s who doesn’t depend on the ML’s this is the story for u. I love the FL soo soo much ❤️❤️❤️

The plot setting is awesome but the story/progress, logic of characters' activities has no head or tail. It is just too bad. It's a delicious candy rolled in a pile of stinky dung that makes it not fit for consumption.
