Jiang Yu is free-falling and no one stopped him. With no one and nothing to pull him back up or soft down his landing. It's a story of loneliness and a journey towards destruction. There is no getting better, only worse.

It has the feeling like the author was pouring out the grievances they have towards the world. The plot is set to maximize Jiang Yu's pain. He's a mess, weak, someone who stayed where he fell down because he doesn't have the energy to get up, and he's without support.... more>> His thoughts are full of self-deprecation. I don't think it's a good thing to read when you're feeling down, it might make you feel down even more.

It starts with Jiang Yu failing his college entrance exam, then his parents finding out his relationship with another man. And so he was sent to get correction treatment, which only added trauma to his already fragile mental state.

Amidst all his pain and everything, over the years, he held on to his love for Zhang Han, who was already his ex-boyfriend since they were 17. It was a passive and silent obsession. And it won't be wrong to call it a 'blind infatuation' to the first and only person who gave him love.

After years of separation, they met again. This love story was between a man with inferiority complex that was Jiang Yu and a perfect kind of man Zhang Han. There's a little spark that gave me hope at first. But this is not a story of reunion and getting back together. Not the sweet story of being each other's salvation.

Spoiler

For Zhang Han, his relationship with Jiang Yu was only a past fling, like a book he finished reading, never opened again once it was closed. But Jiang Yu wrote every verse in his heart and kept it for a lifetime.

There went my faint hope that Zhang Han broke up with him for a reason like wanting Jiang Yu to grow up, etc., etc. It's unexpectedly fresh, out of the usual trope, but my heart is aching. He looked like a scum, but it's realistic, isn't it.

They were together in highschool. It's not completely unexpected if it were only a frivolous kind of teenagers love. But Jiang Yu took it seriously because it was the only light he could see in this total darkness.

It was like seeing the trope of MC with low self-esteem keep making excuses about ML's care for him because he didn't want to believe that ML did everything out of love.

Except that MC was right. ML would've done it for anyone else, just being a decent human being.

Zhang Han is a man completely out of his league, who, in a strange hiccup of the universe requited his love once upon a time. Jiang Yu held on to it. His infatuation is the last rope he's holding on to. Hoping for years that the other end was also still being held on even just a little bit. But not only was it not held but the rope he thought was given to him by the other person was actually only his own and everything was a made up illusion. Zhang Han never liked him, never hold him dear at all. How worthless was he in Zhang Han's eyes if Zhang Han didn't even remember much about the time he spent with Jiang Yu.

I can understand Zhang Han being the type that goes into relationships casually. The type of person who maybe we can meet in real life, entering relationships as flings for present enjoyment, never taking them seriously, backing out after they are asked to promise the rest of their life.

[collapse]

Maybe I have a faint feeling of the general direction, but the details of the journey are worth the read.

I like the writing style, it tightly uses metaphors, like the embroidered birds, the cycle of seasons, and what's happening in the surroundings to describe vividly what Jiang Yu is experiencing with his senses. Although sometimes it gets tacky and could've done without, but I'm probably biased towards this kind of writing style so overall I really like it.

But I don't know what to give for a final score. It has its flaws, like Zhang Han being a too one-dimensional portrayal of 'beauty'. It would've been better if we're given reasons for his actions, why he did what he did, for him not only exist to be a plot device that serves Jiang Yu's torture.

Are you confused about the ending?

Spoiler

Yes he plopped himself into the lake along with the fishes.

[collapse]

The author did write a postscript explaining more about the story and the intention within as well as the symbolisms, but I don't know if it's going to be translated. <<less

This one is an absolute tearjerker, reccomended for people who want to cry, but for some reason, can't. I followed MC for 19 chapters, and I witnessed his life grow progressively worse. He might've committed genocide in his past life, because his current life was a punishment. With parents who only see their child as a puppet and don't even care what he feels, with a lover sorry, ex lover, and current object of obsession, who doesn't really care about him (which is valid, but I am experiencing everything... more>> through the eyes of the MC and this 'ML' seems very hateful to me), non existent friends, and just general bad luck, I am surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Spoiler

yes, he died by jumping into a lake, and I feellikeit was the happiest ending he could've gotten.

[collapse]

I admit, I'd bwen reading so many happy ending BLs that I had forgotten the reality. In countries like ours, where homosexuality or belonging to the LGBTQA+ community is seen as a sin and a disease, there can never be a 'happy ending' for people like us. Most of us are either beaten into marrying the opposite gender, or we have to live our entire lives living in a dark closet, knowing that the 'bright world' of normalcy is beyond our reach.

So I don't mind the ending at all. I hope the MC reincarnates in a world or a country where homosexuality isn't seen as a sin, and I hope he doesn't remember his past life.

I don't want to talk about the parents, they are scum on earth, they do not deserve to raise a child. Hell, they don't deserve to exist. So, let's talk about the ML.

Most readers here will say "ML is valid, it was just a fling for him. As far as hewas concerned, they weren't emotionally connected, so how would he know that MC had an unhealthy obsession with him?"

Well, I agree, but right from the beginning, MC had always been like an abandoned little kitten with a disability. For a person who genuinely cared about him, it was almost impossible to see that he wasn't abused. In fact, ML treated him with so much kimdness because somewhere in his heart he knew that MC was suffering. He got together with MC, treating it as a fling, entering MC's world and becoming the biggest and brightest part of it, only to leave with a one sided order of 'lets break up'. And then what? He didn't care what happened to him. It's like adopting an abandoned and wounded puppy, giving it some kindness, and then abandoning it again once you got tired of it. It's kinda understandable, but to me, not really.

What kind of friendship was he expecting of MC? Besides, MC had been broken long ago, there could never be a happy ending. Whether it was love or obsession, it wasn't healthy, and it wasn't fair to the ML, but I can't help but wonder what would've happened if MC hadn't met ML at all.

He might've fallen in 'love' with some other person who treated him like a human, or he might've gone a few more years till he got his own independence and got away from his parents, living a deeply closeted yet a far better life than what he lived like for years after his parents found out about ML. MC's biggest fault was that he thought his parents and ML had a single shred of love for him.

I really want to read an extra which is about the people around MC
Spoiler

after his death

[collapse]

I want to see them guilty and regretting everything (not ML, though. I do dislike him, but he's like a normal human being. Even though I really sympathize with MC, both MC and I know that getting them together would've ended in two damaged lives instead of one.)

The thing about the non-con portion

Spoiler

drunk/crazy MC tries to force ML, but he knows deep inside that he's not going to do anything to ML, it's just like fulfilling a last wish before dying.

On the other hand, there's some non-graphic info about the repeated assault on MC while he's in the torture dungeon, also known as tbe institute of 'conversion therapy' [side note, but yes, places like that really do exist, if you're wondering]

[collapse]

I'm giving this a 5 star because it really fit my mood. I could shed a few tears and now I feel better about my own life. Y'all might think I'm hella weird but I also liked the ending, because it felt liberating. <<less

Heart-rending story. There's no real ML in here, just the mc's tragic story. The ML is more like a side character that has no idea what's going on. His parents are manipulative, controlling, and cruel, especially his father.

Spoiler

His parents threw him into some rehab facility, where he gets sexually abused and forced to under go electric shocks, to hopefully come out "normal"??? Then they try to set him up with a girl only to find out afterwards that his parents already knew what kind of facility they threw him into. He kinda goes crazy and starts laughing hysterically. He then break ties with his parents.

[collapse]

Ending spoiler!!!

Spoiler

He attempts to r*pe the ML only to be rejected again. Then shows the ML the abuse he's gone through and the scars on his body, reminding himself of how broken he is and how no one he loves want him for who he really is. In the end, he buys himself a bouquet of flowers and drowned himself in a lake.

[collapse]

Our poor MC never had the chance to live life and only went through hardships. It was so sad, I was crying for him. Anyway, one of the best angst stories out there and it's short. The translation might need a little help with grammar, but it's easy enough to understand. <<less

Rather than calling this a romance/love story between the MC and “ML”, it is more like MC emotional and his life journey along w this “bystander ‘ML’, Zhang Han”. From beginning til the end their relationship is not a sweet lovely dovely old crush reunion with each other or any “scum ml” redemption. If there is no ongoing relationship in the first place, what is there to redeem?? It is just Zhang Han way of life and how he deals with interpersonal relationships just like how it is different than... more>> how our MC Jiang Yu deals with his way of life.

there is no clear differentiable line that define who is right or wrong and it is just matters of who’s perspective are you more bias toward in that scene. Each character has their own flaw but it is what made the story realistic. This story however does seems like the author is giving their two cent vent toward the ugliness of society and human, the complications of human and their relationship, and the sometime clear yet complex mind of human beings.

In the end I want to repeat, this is not a love story between two people but rather a story of someone’s extreme obsession toward someone and his emotion journey with it. If you are here for any romance then sorry to disappoint, this is a good tear jerker one instead so prepare some tissues <<less

I really love this story. This story really took me through quite the emotional ride. I felt a suffocating type of deep sadness that makes the chest feel heavy while reading this. I must say the characterization of the MC is really well done, I applaud the author and thank the translator. This story is in fact more about the MC and not really about the ML, it does involve the ML but it does more so in the consciousness of the MC rather than in the action of the... more>> story and surroundings of the MC, the ML does have a heavy impact on the MC and quite a lot of things insue thanks to the ML's actions in the past. The MC initially is truly in love with the ML and can't seem to get over him, but as he mentions in the story later on "maybe he's just in love with the image of the ML in his imagination", the ML was once his light, but he abruptly left him after the break up, the memories and reminiscence of the ML is what got him hanging and moving on, he still wrote letters to him after the break up from time to time but never sent them to him, maybe they were never really destined to the ML, they were destined to the gentle and caring impression the ML left on him, because he really needed such a person in his life to keep hanging on, and so he wrote letters to such an impression of someone. The MC's mental health rapidly deteriorates after he reunites with the ML, because then he has to face reality, he can't keep hanging on to the caring impression of the ML in his consciousness, his only mental support collapsed and then so did his metal health. Those little actions that the ML did and words that he spoke inadvertently with no intention to hurt the MC, but still did hurt him in retro-spect, kept on piling up on his psych until completly broke him. One final happening in one faithful evening was the final straw that broke the camel's back. Though the ML does really seem blameless in this whole story and even kinda like a bystander, irrefutably everything in fact seems to have insued because of every one of his actions.

Spoiler

The ML approached the MC because the later seemed to need someone by his side, and got into a relationship with him afterwards but then broke up with him, without any explanation, while the MC had fallen deeply for him and for his care, and even unassumingly suggested they just stay friends after the break up, "it turned out it was just a spur of the thing relationship, he had never really loved him"

Years after their separation, at their first reunion the ML went looking for the MC first still unassumingly, and went following him while not really caring to ask questions even when it was obvious that many things had happened to the MC, that mattered to the MC

The ML suggested meeting for dinner, cohabitating, and revisting their high school where they had their romance in an atittude of neither setting clear boundaries as just old friends, nor giving clear advances as an old lover you want to rekindle things with

When the MC opened up to the ML about his fight with his parents concerning his sexuality, all he got in response was a "i figured you would have gotten a girlfriend already" whilst dissociating himself from him

And many small things the ML did that seem harmless but in fact just kept on piling up and eventually broke the MC, especially so since the ML was precisely that last straw that the MC was clutching at to keep himself going

[collapse]

One thing that the MC said contextually and that really seems to summarize everything about his mental tumult, especially concerning the ML : someone might say something that really doesn't seem like much to them, even with kind intentions, but to another it could very well be the final straw that broke the camel's back

Though I must say I am really curious about the story from the ML's POV, so many of his actions seem inadvertent yet I would like to know his intent behind them, the first of them being the reason behind the breakup, I would very much like such a sequel of some sorts that goes into it. <<less
