A decent story that literally throws off and erases its original premise, with a mostly inconclusive esoteric happy ending.

  • Premise:
Modern MC transmigrates into the book he read about a stereotypical "Incompetent Hero kicks out the only competent party member, and he has to save the world after the Hero fails" kind of plot. Now, using future knowledge, the MC sets out to thwart the seven disasters poised to destroy humanity, while recruiting a new party and dealing with politics and his reputation.

  • Setting:
Typical adventure-friendly medieval fantasy world, with kingdoms, nobles, adventurers, mages,... more>> and monsters. There is a prophecy stating that seven disasters, left behind by the "Evil Gods", would destroy the world, but in turn, a Hero would rise to protect humanity, wielding a holy sword.

  • Characters:
The MC is a hyper-altruistic Combat Jesus archetype: kind, optimistic, always putting other people first, and suffering from a terminal case of self-sacrifice-itis. Besides him, we have the snarky paladin of the party who develops a kind of "bro" relationship with the MC, the super-cynical and pragmatic mercenary who used to be the protagonist of the "original story", and the Saintess in love with the mercenary, only to regret it when she realizes that her fears and misunderstanding of the protagonist led to lots of death and suffering. Later on, the MC also starts collecting a harem, including an abused deredere mage girl she picks up and nurtures, a kuudere Inquisitor girl sent to him by the church, the OP queen of the country, as well as the manifestation of the Holy Sword herself.

Unfortunately, while the characters do receive a fair amount of development, once it happens, they kind of just stall, and they remain completely static. This it the clearest with the MC, who is completely consumed by the chronic hero syndrome by the first quarter of the story, and never gets better. There are also a couple of side characters, but aside from the Inquisitor Bishop and the Northern Archduke, none of them return or play any meaningful role outside of the arc where they are introduced.

  • Plot:
On the surface, it's a reverse of the usual "protagonist gets kicked out of the party" template, but after that's cleared up, it becomes just a very straightforwards JRPG-style hero's tale, with some underlying mysteries to spice things up in the last ten or so chapters. MC and his party receive a quest to fight a disaster or something related to them, they receive support from the authorities, but then the threat turns out to be too much, there's a low-point that makes it look like all is lost, only for a macguffin/technique/character introduced in this arc to suddenly give the MC a powerup and then he turns the tables and secures a victory while ending up progressively more injured and ill in the process.

As expected, this makes the story highly predictable. For example, let's say that we have the following elements: a mystical fog that makes people lose their way and traps them in nightmares until they die, a side-character who's wrestling with her feelings for the protagonist, and a macguffin artifact she picks up whose sole purpose is to point them towards something they desperately desire. If your brain immediately put together the most basic and rudimentary plot for an arc for that one, I'm sorry, but you just got spoiled, because the actual story is exactly the same.

Spoiler

The only meaningful twist is at the very end, and while it's not a last-second rug-pull, as it was hinted at well ahead of time, it's still somewhat unsatisfying. Long story short, it turns out the MC wasn't a transmigrator, but instead the whole world is in a time-loop, and he's the Hero in all of them, with the Holy Sword (who, herself, is a piece of the God of Light the local church worships) gave him false memories, and turned the previous cycle into a story in this fake life. However, the metaphysics of the whole system are extremelywonky, and the ending is a bit of a wet fart that doesn't resolve any of the side plots (including the harem), leaves a lot of characters hanging, and has a literal author avatar give the MC an esoteric good ending.

[collapse]

  • Overall:
This is a story that starts out pretty strong, with a decent hook, strong early characterization, and some pretty good character conflicts and drama. However, it rapidly runs out of steam after the first couple of arcs, and it gets more dragged out over time, with main characters getting sidelined left and right, and ending on an abstruse finale that barely ties up any of the plot-threads it kept dangling for the better part of a hundred chapters.

To put it into numbers, the beginning was 5, the ending was about 2.5, and I round the average up to 4. It's worth a read, and it's by no means bad, but I recommend tempering one's expectations before going in. <<less

There's 2 types of stories that I'm pretty sick of

1. I was banished from the hero's party

... more>> 2. I possessed the useless villain (and now I have to convince everyone I'm good and not useless)

Well, this novel is about a guy who possessed the somewhat useless hero who just finished banishing the real protagonist and I absolutely loved it so far.

Why does it work? Well because it uses the best gimmicks from the 2 story types while down playing the usual annoying parts of each.

Yes the hero was pretty useless and banished the real strongest guy in the party, but he was also not completely out of line doing it.

Spoiler

The protagonist was a rogue that did whatever he wanted while considering only himself right. The original hero was jealous of him but in reality kicked him out for a valid reason, so the misunderstanding that MC needs to navigate of "Why did you kick him out?" Is nowhere as cringe inducing as it tends to be in a lot of these stories

[collapse]

Once more is revealed, it really is just a relationship of two people who fundamentally don't get along and shouldn't work together. It makes the dynamic between them as the story unfolds interesting.

And yes MC has a shitty reputation, but it doesn't triple down on this like a lot of 'I possessed the villain' novels tend to. Where it just makes me go "I f*cking get it... People think he's tr*sh! Can we move on already?..." The parts that his reputation does play a role in makes sense and plays into the major politics side of the story. It never feels like a 'woe is me' pointless plotline where he's just a nice guy that unfortunately got stuck in a villain's body (I'm looking at you 90% of Korean novels).

There's also a big focus on how a lot of the hero's 'bad habits' were because of all the pressure he was under and the lack of understanding he received from his party members. It goes a long way towards showing that no one was completely right in this situation and both sides made mistakes.

Similar to before, having the so called 'villain' he possessed not be such a bad guy for a change really helped in reducing the cringe I get from a lot of these stories.

The MC is really good: he's smart, hardworking, heroic and has generally good EQ. He also doesn't commit the transmigration sin of trying to deny reality or 'stick to the original plot' bullshit. He's really quick on the uptake of 'I gotta take over'.

The side characters are solid as well. There's very few of them (which is good) and each one gets a lot of shine (even if they're stories are a little generic).

There's also light romance I guess?... It's definitely not a focus but it's a sweet relationship that might get a pay off towards the end I imagine.

My only big complaint is that after a promising start it's on the slow side and not much of the overall mystery has been revealed so far.

FYI - Some Very strong Christianity tones and depictions of MC as Jesus, if that bothers you.

Highly recommend overall. <<less

First and foremost, the characters in this novel are as bland as stale bread. The author's attempt at character development falls flat, leaving the reader with a cast of one-dimensional individuals lacking depth, personality, or any distinguishing features. It is disheartening when even the protagonist fails to elicit any empathy or interest. They are forgettable entities, devoid of charisma and plagued by insipid dialogue that does nothing to propel the story forward.

The plot, or lack thereof, is a meandering mess. The first few chapters seem to promise an intriguing premise,... more>> one that admittedly initially caught my attention, but it quickly unravels into a tedious and aimless narrative. The pacing is excruciatingly erratic, with some scenes that drag on endlessly without any meaningful contribution to the story. Instead of building tension or providing excitement, the plot stagnates in a sea of banality, leaving readers yearning for something, anything, to happen. <<less

I'm avoiding giving an actual rating because I read the mtl so half the stuff I read I could've just deluded myself into, but it's pretty good. It's pretty unique in that the hero that the MC possess isn't actually an as*hole beforehand like most other transmigration novels, he's just a very unconfident dude.... more>>
Spoiler

in fact, the protagonist of the original work was more of a cynical "I get the job done" type fellow while the original hero was the type to save everything and defeat the threat- ie the classic hero. And as you can expect from two opinions that are vastly different and kinda similar from each other, they did not agree with each other. Annnddd that leads to the prologue.

[collapse]

And I really like that because in the prologue, it says his "voice full of swagger and narcissism" and it's probably because he is unconfident that he puts on an act of being proud and arrogant to appear confident. Of course, he just comes off as an as*hole instead so...

Another thing I like is the character growth. It is very natural to say the least, well I feel like it is. They just don't suddenly change and when they do change it isn't suddenly positive. I don't know, it's probably because I've read so many novels that this common character growth is such a grabber to me.

The disasters/calamities/whatever end of the world are really well done too, they do a good job at exposing the characters backstory while making them stronger too and they also feel like a real threat too. I mean it's not like a holy crap bu*t clenching moment, but it's more of a "hmm, yeah that's pretty bad" moment.

and I also really like the disaster format because it really allows for other characters to shine instead of it just being the MC that wins and that's nice because it shows that even the MC has flaws and weaknesses, which is great because characters with flaws produce interesting characters and ones with no weakness and are good at everything are just boring after a while. <<less

Some reviews have mentioned - the characters being bland and most of the dialogue of MC being unnecessary - but from my pov that is what shows that MC isn't some 1-dimensional idealistic hero on white horse but rather a realist who accepts the reality of the world as it is but still tries to uphold his responsibilities as it is expected of a real hero, He knows he can't save everyone but he doesn't let that stop him from doing his duty. He accepts the consequences of his choices... more>> and even take responsibility for them as was the case for Bactin's situation. He doesn't think that he has become some kind of protagonist of a novel but rather identifies himself as the hero - who he is - and takes responsibilty for his pre-transmigration actions and after.

Again for some who think that characters are bland please read the novel while noting how a character behaved at the start and how they are behaving now that so much has happened since then. For example you could see the behavioral change of -

Spoiler

Daphne when she came for selection of hero party members at start, she wasn't even able to talk with Elroy without keeping her head down and wasn't able to even cast the most basic attack spell on the monster. But she gained her confidence gradually.

Yes, even after she became able to express herself with confidence, she was still depending on Elroy too much for emotional stability,

But this was resolved when the author made Daphne realize her over-reliance on Elroy during the Fifth disaster incident and she tried to help as independently as possible during Sixth Diasaster's fiasco.

[collapse]

Also those who think that MC doesn't have any character depth you should try to understand his thoughts which the author made sure to let us know. The conversation between MC and OG protagonist are quite intriguing too.

The story is enjoyable even if you haven't read any other reincarnation/transmigration stories.

I'm quite intrigued by the foreshadowing of Holy Sword being more than just an artifact designated for a Hero's use. Also the concept of multiverse that the author introduced during Arjen's turning was quite interesting too and the mysterious aura that The Darkness exudes is really well done.

All in all a great read so far, just waiting for the translator to start translating again.

Edit:

The main story's been fully translated.

The ending was a little unsatisfactory as the parts about the mechanism behind MC's reincarnation made his superb character development throughout the novel a little meaningless and even when the MC insisted that everything was his own choice, it felt a bit forced.

But overall still a great novel to read. Waiting for the side stories.

Again Thanks to the Author and Translators. <<less

It is good to see that an author is writing a simple work it makes me feel old I can't remember when trends shifted and heroes become bad and nowadays every novel has a scumbag MC I don't disagree with evil protagonist but a protagonist have to have reason or philosophy that he firmly believes in nowadays we hardly see this the MCs are regular lucky dudes who got powers and their inner self and desires are revealed

First, the premise and title of this story is what caught my eye. There are too many stories that follow the protagonist that is banished with from the so-called 'hero' party. So to have a story that focuses on the hero, who is flawed and not written as a villainous caricature, is refreshing but meets only the barest essentials of what I personally look for in a story.

I appreciate that the author took the time to explore both sides - the hero, our MC, and the protagonist, Arjen - and... more>> why their ideals and outlook clashed and what led to the party's breakout. Too often, KR novels like to favor one side too much, and this blatant favoritism makes the situation too easy for the MC and his followers when everyone accepts them as right and everyone else who opposes are evil or dumb or whatever. That kind of face-slapping plot is common and I suppose it could be appealing to some, but I've gotten rather tired of it.

Like others have noted, I like how the MC does not try to follow the plot or insist on it. He actively tries to 'correct' and steer the plot in his own way. He's not afraid to venture into the unknown, and he doesn't try to excuse the original hero's past mistakes and instead focuses on moving past that and working for the future. There is clear motivation and goal of defeating these 'calamities', growing stronger with his party members, and dealing with the politics and consequences of the original party's breakup. So far, there is little romance mentioned, but if there is, I hope that remains a subplot at best. Support characters are written fairly well and have their own personalities and lives.

The only one, but major, downside to this story is sadly, the English translation, and that is what caused me to rate this story a 4 instead of a 5. The pronouns are all over the place. Like in one chapter, I couldn't tell if Nella was a he or a she since it was used interchangeably in a single paragraph. There was another chapter describing a nobleman's daughter as the 'son' instead when the name is clearly feminine. Whenever the MC is narrating, there is mix of first person and third person. If there is a change in setting, it ought to capitalized and not written in the same paragraph. I want to focus on the story, not on the obvious grammar and constant pronoun mistakes.

Hopefully, a new translation group will pick this up and fix the previous chapters. This story has potential to be developed into a manhwa, and get some well-deserved attention. <<less

A very satisfying read with a great translator. The protagonist is proactive and a decent human being. A quality severely lacking in more novels, instead preferring to have the easier to write loner/edgy protagonist. Character interactions are done very well.

Pretty standard story. Author does not develop side characters in any way, they are forgettable and bland. Pacing is so so. Fights are written horribly. There is nothing in this story that makes it unique and even then in it's normalcy it isn't good.

Yep way too much pointless dialogue that doesnt entertain, add to world building, show emotions, show character growth or even progress the plot in anyway. It really is just a mumbo jumbo self serving dialogue trying to make the MC seemed smart and quippy to side char but its way longer than necessary.

This novel is like a breath of fresh air there is no edgy teenagers no dungeons and no Academy arc looming in the horizon and most importantly a hero protagonist who feels and act like a hero an actual charcoal progression of side characters and the MC himself and a fleshed out side characters rooster.

And the disasters the hero is supposed to fight actually feels like one even regular monsters feels like one and not just npcs that the author added to boost the MC ego.

Spoiler

Thought I hope the romance interest is the queen and if this ended up as no romance bs and the MC being denser then a black hole I will probably change the review as I hate when the author writes about characters that likes the MC only for the author to throw them away and the MC ending like a dark souls mc

[collapse]

Spoiler

About the story the hero (our protagonist) and the og protagonist are polar opposites of each other our MC is and even the original hero are people who are not willing to sacrifice someone to save another they are always willing to do anything to save every one while the og protagonist is willing to sacrifice one to save two your classic edgy teenagers and as you guessed this causes a clash of ideologies and that's what happens in the og story and even happen in the our story since our MC feels like an update for the og hero

I went into this novel being unsure how good it would be, given the couple of bad reviews above. It turns out my caution was entirely unwarranted, as this was one of the novels I ended up loving. The plot progresses silky smooth, I've never felt once like I have been reading filler yet. I am entranced into the novel, and the story is multi-dimensional in that the narrative as its presented in the first few chapters is not as it actually is - there is depth to the characters... more>> and story. The translation's quality is also nearly flawless, and there are plenty of awesome commentators writing along with the posts to have good discussion each chapter. What initially opened up to be another simple brain dead "oh nyo I am in a x game as x character" story became one of the best Korean novels I have had the pleasure of reading.
The initial twist for the story is basically the title which is lazy but the unique aspect is the fact that unlike literally every other novel in this genre the supposed staple character traits are not at all broken. There is a reasonable justification for the politics at play with the former party members to the point majority of the comments under chapters were actually mostly unsure for which side to like lol. I won't go into specifics but the Novel delves very heavily into the mindset of the realist "hero" and unrealistic one.
The story doesn't shy away from making the MC go through true insurmountable odds in trying to achieve his goals and also give good reasoning for the realist heroes ways.
All of this stacked, with well written characters and an interesting setting is what makes it such a well done novel.
The scope of the novel increases exponentially and it takes a really long time for author to really make use of the everything he sets up in the earlier parts of the novel but nonetheless its amazing.

But I'll outline the few negatives that come from this story;

  • While the translation is great I have noticed some pretty inconsistent quality in the writing itself within this story. Some scenes are described amazingly well, and amazing dialogue I wouldn't expect from a web novel while a few feel like rushed descriptions put without much care. It's a stingy complaint but worth pointing out nonetheless.
  • Pacing is good but a lot of the main motifs regarding what sort of story this is happen quite late? I think this is fine but a lot of people here came in for the unga bunga part this genre is known for leading to disappointment while the title itself pushes away the people who would like this story
Saw a few complaints in reviews and decided I would respond as well;

  • I looked at reviews and I noticed some people making complains regarding the little romance in the story as self insert harem garbage or the fact that fights simply felt underwhelming. I personally thought the fights were more descriptive and had considerably more sound than majority of Korean novels I've read so far while on the other had the romance barely existed to interfere with the the main story but rather was put in correctly? I would implore anyone who reads my review to give the series their own try because these are the type of readers who only desire a specific type of power fantasy novel that the author sadly appealed to when marketing this work.
Either way to finish it all off go read it pls.

I can’t say I dislike this story, but every “apocalyptic threat” that appears, the MC oneshots it and nobody dies.

It’s a prime example of this story- constant build up for the big bad to be erased in a paragraph. You spend so much time and energy on the drama and the actual substance of the story is empty. The characters are fairly one note, and while the premise is interesting, the story lacks staying power.

What started as a intriguing, intricate world filled with political schemes and resource allotment, turned into... more>> just another power fantasy. And that’s why a 3-4 star story drops to 1. <<less

Started nice but quickly ended up boring for me.

The starting pitch is nothing new but written up nicely and it's development at start is fairly interesting as well as the character development, but it end up taking its feet in the dress and falling flatly, evolving into pedantic moral lessons and boring stretching chapters of self absorption from the author.

I think the author took himself and his story too seriously and it kind of spoiled the fun, even more so when he start falling into the tropes of failed harem... more>> story, meaning MC too dense and bored of pu*sy that he doesn't even see how wet they are... Sorry for the crude comparison, but this kind of poor harem writing always feel like the wet dream of an author that didn't get any younger and is trying to show off to these 'b*tches' that ignored him. For short lame.

So here I am, I would have loved to like it, but for me it just fail to land and I won't be losing any more time to see if it gets better. <<less

So... It's average?

There are characters I like in the story, and there are scenes that work... but the copypasta premise is insanely flawed. It blows my mind how many enter the game/book plots happen, while never really understanding how empty that makes certain character interactions.

The rewriting of the spear mercenary into a second rate character who is only good at killing and having a weird inferiority complex is weird as well.

The way the disasters are talked about is strange too... Have they been around for centuries? 2 got beat a... more>> few decades ago, but main plot needs 4 of them to happen in 1 year? The mist thing is weird, so it comes and goes wiping out countries? Did it die this time? Or is it just recharging? The meteorite that will destroy the planet? It's been travelling for centuries but will just now land? What about the frost giant, he just last summer started his magic spell to freeze the planet, but if he had won... his fellow disaster would meteorite kill him too?

I'm enjoying parts of the plot... but it really falls apart the more you think about it. I'm also getting BORED with how all 4 of the females who matter want his dick.... but he does nothing. Does he think of them as characters in a game? Who knows. Does he want to rail them all? Who knows. Just an open ended empty harem plot. <<less

Hello, this is my first review ever. So cmiiw :)

If you think this novel is like another 'reincarnation', 'transmigration', or 'fantasy' novel you'll be half correct!

But, this novel has some good points too and I think it take a very new perspective of being reincarnated into another world.

First, the MC is the Hero (which most of the time were as*hole and prick) but he is not really that kinda hero. Well, he did have a bad rep bcs he is a rogue one. But it will be explain in... more>> the story why.

Second, I haven't see a harem in this novel. There is a little bit romance (i think) but it's more like comraderie in my point of view. While most of the story today have MC collecting harem like it was a pokemon

Third, I like sacrificial kinda MC it reminded me of ORV. I think I just like Elroy LOL

While this novel is not perfect, I highly you give it a try. It has some characteristic of becoming the next 'big thing' if the Author doesn't f*ck it up.

Thank you for reading my review. Arrivederci <<less

About as good as this type of story can be, with a pretty intricate narrative contrast between the "dark fantasy" of the "original" story against a competent but human main character who wants to make things better, without having access to easy cheats or perfect knowledge. Also, good politics, combat, and scale for events and passage of time.

Overall extremely competent and enjoyable story, with the translations holing up with some minor name spelling variations excepted.

The basic premise does not seem unique compared to most of this style of genre, but it does well in not falling in to many of the common tropes that make for either edgelord novels or the "woe is me" story. Everyone so far that has any significance to the story hasn't been a simple "bad guy" who is bad. The initial two conflict sides are people of different viewpoints, neither being a bad viewpoint.
It also isn't some sort of, "I have future knowledge and use this to be stronger and tricky and avoid the issues" which is a big plus nowadays.
Most stories can maintain a decent world of differing people this long, so the rest will have to maintain this going forward.

And I like that the Hero is not invincible or powerful enough to face those challenges, he makes very hard decisions on how much he sacrifices to win. <<less
