So... It's average?

There are characters I like in the story, and there are scenes that work... but the copypasta premise is insanely flawed. It blows my mind how many enter the game/book plots happen, while never really understanding how empty that makes certain character interactions.

The rewriting of the spear mercenary into a second rate character who is only good at killing and having a weird inferiority complex is weird as well.

The way the disasters are talked about is strange too... Have they been around for centuries? 2 got beat a... more>> few decades ago, but main plot needs 4 of them to happen in 1 year? The mist thing is weird, so it comes and goes wiping out countries? Did it die this time? Or is it just recharging? The meteorite that will destroy the planet? It's been travelling for centuries but will just now land? What about the frost giant, he just last summer started his magic spell to freeze the planet, but if he had won... his fellow disaster would meteorite kill him too?

I'm enjoying parts of the plot... but it really falls apart the more you think about it. I'm also getting BORED with how all 4 of the females who matter want his dick.... but he does nothing. Does he think of them as characters in a game? Who knows. Does he want to rail them all? Who knows. Just an open ended empty harem plot. <<less

There's 2 types of stories that I'm pretty sick of

1. I was banished from the hero's party

... more>> 2. I possessed the useless villain (and now I have to convince everyone I'm good and not useless)

Well, this novel is about a guy who possessed the somewhat useless hero who just finished banishing the real protagonist and I absolutely loved it so far.

Why does it work? Well because it uses the best gimmicks from the 2 story types while down playing the usual annoying parts of each.

Yes the hero was pretty useless and banished the real strongest guy in the party, but he was also not completely out of line doing it.

Spoiler

The protagonist was a rogue that did whatever he wanted while considering only himself right. The original hero was jealous of him but in reality kicked him out for a valid reason, so the misunderstanding that MC needs to navigate of "Why did you kick him out?" Is nowhere as cringe inducing as it tends to be in a lot of these stories

[collapse]

Once more is revealed, it really is just a relationship of two people who fundamentally don't get along and shouldn't work together. It makes the dynamic between them as the story unfolds interesting.

And yes MC has a shitty reputation, but it doesn't triple down on this like a lot of 'I possessed the villain' novels tend to. Where it just makes me go "I f*cking get it... People think he's tr*sh! Can we move on already?..." The parts that his reputation does play a role in makes sense and plays into the major politics side of the story. It never feels like a 'woe is me' pointless plotline where he's just a nice guy that unfortunately got stuck in a villain's body (I'm looking at you 90% of Korean novels).

There's also a big focus on how a lot of the hero's 'bad habits' were because of all the pressure he was under and the lack of understanding he received from his party members. It goes a long way towards showing that no one was completely right in this situation and both sides made mistakes.

Similar to before, having the so called 'villain' he possessed not be such a bad guy for a change really helped in reducing the cringe I get from a lot of these stories.

The MC is really good: he's smart, hardworking, heroic and has generally good EQ. He also doesn't commit the transmigration sin of trying to deny reality or 'stick to the original plot' bullshit. He's really quick on the uptake of 'I gotta take over'.

The side characters are solid as well. There's very few of them (which is good) and each one gets a lot of shine (even if they're stories are a little generic).

There's also light romance I guess?... It's definitely not a focus but it's a sweet relationship that might get a pay off towards the end I imagine.

My only big complaint is that after a promising start it's on the slow side and not much of the overall mystery has been revealed so far.

FYI - Some Very strong Christianity tones and depictions of MC as Jesus, if that bothers you.

Highly recommend overall. <<less

First and foremost, the characters in this novel are as bland as stale bread. The author's attempt at character development falls flat, leaving the reader with a cast of one-dimensional individuals lacking depth, personality, or any distinguishing features. It is disheartening when even the protagonist fails to elicit any empathy or interest. They are forgettable entities, devoid of charisma and plagued by insipid dialogue that does nothing to propel the story forward.

The plot, or lack thereof, is a meandering mess. The first few chapters seem to promise an intriguing premise,... more>> one that admittedly initially caught my attention, but it quickly unravels into a tedious and aimless narrative. The pacing is excruciatingly erratic, with some scenes that drag on endlessly without any meaningful contribution to the story. Instead of building tension or providing excitement, the plot stagnates in a sea of banality, leaving readers yearning for something, anything, to happen. <<less

I'm avoiding giving an actual rating because I read the mtl so half the stuff I read I could've just deluded myself into, but it's pretty good. It's pretty unique in that the hero that the MC possess isn't actually an as*hole beforehand like most other transmigration novels, he's just a very unconfident dude.... more>>
Spoiler

in fact, the protagonist of the original work was more of a cynical "I get the job done" type fellow while the original hero was the type to save everything and defeat the threat- ie the classic hero. And as you can expect from two opinions that are vastly different and kinda similar from each other, they did not agree with each other. Annnddd that leads to the prologue.

[collapse]

And I really like that because in the prologue, it says his "voice full of swagger and narcissism" and it's probably because he is unconfident that he puts on an act of being proud and arrogant to appear confident. Of course, he just comes off as an as*hole instead so...

Another thing I like is the character growth. It is very natural to say the least, well I feel like it is. They just don't suddenly change and when they do change it isn't suddenly positive. I don't know, it's probably because I've read so many novels that this common character growth is such a grabber to me.

The disasters/calamities/whatever end of the world are really well done too, they do a good job at exposing the characters backstory while making them stronger too and they also feel like a real threat too. I mean it's not like a holy crap bu*t clenching moment, but it's more of a "hmm, yeah that's pretty bad" moment.

and I also really like the disaster format because it really allows for other characters to shine instead of it just being the MC that wins and that's nice because it shows that even the MC has flaws and weaknesses, which is great because characters with flaws produce interesting characters and ones with no weakness and are good at everything are just boring after a while. <<less

It is good to see that an author is writing a simple work it makes me feel old I can't remember when trends shifted and heroes become bad and nowadays every novel has a scumbag MC I don't disagree with evil protagonist but a protagonist have to have reason or philosophy that he firmly believes in nowadays we hardly see this the MCs are regular lucky dudes who got powers and their inner self and desires are revealed

Pretty standard story. Author does not develop side characters in any way, they are forgettable and bland. Pacing is so so. Fights are written horribly. There is nothing in this story that makes it unique and even then in it's normalcy it isn't good.

First, the premise and title of this story is what caught my eye. There are too many stories that follow the protagonist that is banished with from the so-called 'hero' party. So to have a story that focuses on the hero, who is flawed and not written as a villainous caricature, is refreshing but meets only the barest essentials of what I personally look for in a story.

I appreciate that the author took the time to explore both sides - the hero, our MC, and the protagonist, Arjen - and... more>> why their ideals and outlook clashed and what led to the party's breakout. Too often, KR novels like to favor one side too much, and this blatant favoritism makes the situation too easy for the MC and his followers when everyone accepts them as right and everyone else who opposes are evil or dumb or whatever. That kind of face-slapping plot is common and I suppose it could be appealing to some, but I've gotten rather tired of it.

Like others have noted, I like how the MC does not try to follow the plot or insist on it. He actively tries to 'correct' and steer the plot in his own way. He's not afraid to venture into the unknown, and he doesn't try to excuse the original hero's past mistakes and instead focuses on moving past that and working for the future. There is clear motivation and goal of defeating these 'calamities', growing stronger with his party members, and dealing with the politics and consequences of the original party's breakup. So far, there is little romance mentioned, but if there is, I hope that remains a subplot at best. Support characters are written fairly well and have their own personalities and lives.

The only one, but major, downside to this story is sadly, the English translation, and that is what caused me to rate this story a 4 instead of a 5. The pronouns are all over the place. Like in one chapter, I couldn't tell if Nella was a he or a she since it was used interchangeably in a single paragraph. There was another chapter describing a nobleman's daughter as the 'son' instead when the name is clearly feminine. Whenever the MC is narrating, there is mix of first person and third person. If there is a change in setting, it ought to capitalized and not written in the same paragraph. I want to focus on the story, not on the obvious grammar and constant pronoun mistakes.

Hopefully, a new translation group will pick this up and fix the previous chapters. This story has potential to be developed into a manhwa, and get some well-deserved attention. <<less

A very satisfying read with a great translator. The protagonist is proactive and a decent human being. A quality severely lacking in more novels, instead preferring to have the easier to write loner/edgy protagonist. Character interactions are done very well.

Yep way too much pointless dialogue that doesnt entertain, add to world building, show emotions, show character growth or even progress the plot in anyway. It really is just a mumbo jumbo self serving dialogue trying to make the MC seemed smart and quippy to side char but its way longer than necessary.

Now, where do I start, I have been on NU for a long time already and read a lot of novels, the most popular of them follow a certain trend. Something like "oh sh*t I have been reincarnated in a villain game? Better live as mob as don't change the story" proceeds to change the stories anyways, a core part of their charactor building is the harem member they keep bigger harem = bigger charactor

Second type of insufferable story trope are getting kicked from a part then OH NO the... more>> MC is sekretly OP? OH NO he has a pretty girl defending him now and his value skyrocketed ? He gets random power ups from seemingly no where and the so called "difficulties" they face are literally nothing, no strategy (unless we are talking about sevens great harem novel) just slash a bunch of time, suck up to the female leads or acr like some edgy teen and voala problem solved.

Now, let's take a look at this novel, the hero here genuinely tries to embody the mantal of hero here, the hero party charactors are so so but we are following elroy here, he is the protagonist and he is the hero for the sake of people and GOD DAMN this novel does such a good job at portraying it, the protagonist was banish, sure but he had a genuinely good reason. To banish the protagonist. The ppl don't immediately make a face and go like "ew hero cringe bad guy stinky poo poo", everything has an interesting political twist to it and the previous body owner wasn't some tr*sh either, yes he was insecure but he genuinely tried his best to be a hero it's just that his ideals were too... naive I guess, so people give this novel a try it gets a 4.5 out of me the hero party girls could have used a better charactor writing but honestly, it's still a damn good story to read through. Especially since we are living in an age where charactor building us dome through by making the harem bigger or making the MC a psycho edge lord <<less

This novel is like a breath of fresh air there is no edgy teenagers no dungeons and no Academy arc looming in the horizon and most importantly a hero protagonist who feels and act like a hero an actual charcoal progression of side characters and the MC himself and a fleshed out side characters rooster.

And the disasters the hero is supposed to fight actually feels like one even regular monsters feels like one and not just npcs that the author added to boost the MC ego.

Spoiler

Thought I hope the romance interest is the queen and if this ended up as no romance bs and the MC being denser then a black hole I will probably change the review as I hate when the author writes about characters that likes the MC only for the author to throw them away and the MC ending like a dark souls mc

[collapse]

Spoiler

About the story the hero (our protagonist) and the og protagonist are polar opposites of each other our MC is and even the original hero are people who are not willing to sacrifice someone to save another they are always willing to do anything to save every one while the og protagonist is willing to sacrifice one to save two your classic edgy teenagers and as you guessed this causes a clash of ideologies and that's what happens in the og story and even happen in the our story since our MC feels like an update for the og hero

I went into this novel being unsure how good it would be, given the couple of bad reviews above. It turns out my caution was entirely unwarranted, as this was one of the novels I ended up loving. The plot progresses silky smooth, I've never felt once like I have been reading filler yet. I am entranced into the novel, and the story is multi-dimensional in that the narrative as its presented in the first few chapters is not as it actually is - there is depth to the characters... more>> and story. The translation's quality is also nearly flawless, and there are plenty of awesome commentators writing along with the posts to have good discussion each chapter. I'll probably be following this novel to its end, and see how Elroy progresses! <<less

Hello, this is my first review ever. So cmiiw :)

If you think this novel is like another 'reincarnation', 'transmigration', or 'fantasy' novel you'll be half correct!

But, this novel has some good points too and I think it take a very new perspective of being reincarnated into another world.

First, the MC is the Hero (which most of the time were as*hole and prick) but he is not really that kinda hero. Well, he did have a bad rep bcs he is a rogue one. But it will be explain in... more>> the story why.

Second, I haven't see a harem in this novel. There is a little bit romance (i think) but it's more like comraderie in my point of view. While most of the story today have MC collecting harem like it was a pokemon

Third, I like sacrificial kinda MC it reminded me of ORV. I think I just like Elroy LOL

While this novel is not perfect, I highly you give it a try. It has some characteristic of becoming the next 'big thing' if the Author doesn't f*ck it up.

Thank you for reading my review. Arrivederci <<less

About as good as this type of story can be, with a pretty intricate narrative contrast between the "dark fantasy" of the "original" story against a competent but human main character who wants to make things better, without having access to easy cheats or perfect knowledge. Also, good politics, combat, and scale for events and passage of time.

Overall extremely competent and enjoyable story, with the translations holing up with some minor name spelling variations excepted.

The basic premise does not seem unique compared to most of this style of genre, but it does well in not falling in to many of the common tropes that make for either edgelord novels or the "woe is me" story. Everyone so far that has any significance to the story hasn't been a simple "bad guy" who is bad. The initial two conflict sides are people of different viewpoints, neither being a bad viewpoint.
It also isn't some sort of, "I have future knowledge and use this to be... more>> stronger and tricky and avoid the issues" which is a big plus nowadays.
Most stories can maintain a decent world of differing people this long, so the rest will have to maintain this going forward. <<less

This is pretty mid, they change the label of exiled to the hero but it's still the same. MC still being targeted by everyone, MC still have problems with his party. MC still trains since he sucks. It didn't make sense really since the MC still isekai'd to the OG Beta character like every other Isekai, it just happens that he was a hero. It's not someone who's at an obvious upperhand like every other villain, he's still the same character who would die in the OG source.

Spoiler

The two characters; MC and the Protagonist he banished weren't necessarily enemies, just two people with different ideals and beliefs that cannot agree to one another. If I were to describe it, MC is a hero both in title and character- he wants to save everyone and I admire him for that, meanwhile the Protagonist is kind of a lone-wolf & anti-hero, he thinks its impossible and does the most logical and objective actions even if it causes others death as long as the majority is saved.

The two characters are a contrast to one another and strictly adheres to what they believe in. When they fought, they both realized they could never truly work with one another (I also agree). I personally thought that MC is fit to be a hero, showing good will through actions while Protagonist is more fit to be the underworld boss or something, someone that does the dirty work for the greater good.

[collapse]

I like that some topics such as politics, the weight MC has to carry as a hero, the feelings of the people he (origMC) has failed to save are not being forgotten. I'm more curious on the original MC, I want to know what happened to him. So far I'm liking that romance isn't highlighted, I sense some subtle actions from characters that suggests they might like MC, but MC himself isn't interested (or the actions are subtle for him to perceive) and is more focused on saving the world. On a personal note, I wish we'd have more male characters in the hero party 😩 I also feel that its lacking on the relationship with other characters, like MC doesn't really have someone he can truly trust or treat like a family or bestfriend, his relationship with other characters right now isn't satisfying for me.

If I have to add one thing, sometimes the transition of POV isn't clear. Also I don't know who's talking sometimes, I have to guess who's who. I also do think there were some parts that dragged on for too much...

Spoiler

Like the fourth calamity they had to fought, so much chapters for the build up and then when I thought an epic fight is about to happen... It was just MC slashing his sword and then the next chapter is immediately him recuperating. Why??? I also can't take the injury seriously (from what the duke said to Iris and Arjen) because the novel didn't describe or portray it enough for us readers. Also because he recovered soon enough anyways.

When trying to read a novel always check out few bad reviews and a good reviews.

The characters bland as many reviews say, why ? The story in the creators gigantic brain removed the party members to only copy paste a inferior one dimensional version of them. Like the mage girl kicked out cause.... she supported the original villain hero to harrass the novel protag saint sounds interesting right? Nah She got replaced by a girl who whenever talks has paragraph reminding you how hard her life was... in medieval ages,... more>> we have it hard in modern age... imagine poor life must be rare in middle ages.
