After breaking his back working with the Hero’s Party, Chris wound up facing a dog’s death.

‘Please, let me be born into a wealthy family in my next life…’

When he next awoke, he was the young master of an immensely wealthy family. However, he wasn’t just any noble son but Christian van Baren Kazar—the infamous, good-for-nothing bastard of the Magic Empire’s Dark Magic Clan.

“Aaaagh! What the hell?!”

There were only two years left until Christian was fated to meet an untimely death. And even if he managed to survive that long, he still needed to stop the end of the world.

Chris had only one option if he wanted to survive and enjoy a life of wealth and luxury: seize control of the Dark Magic Clan and become a Demon King himself.

Though the odds were stacked against him, it seemed doable enough. Why?

‘Because I’m a genius!’

Genuinely enjoying this. This is one of these novels whose webtoon I read first, which then made me interested enough to hop on the korean novel to see what happens next— only to end up swallowing hundreds of chapters.

One of these novels that, while not being depth-full and well-written enough to be called « great », you keep on reading without even keeping track of the chapters' number, and in my book that's a win.

so what do I have to say about this ?

... more>> Context :

The background is restricted to a continent. On this continent, you have two, conflicting big factions—one is « the alliance » (or union), and the other the « Magocracy » (magical empire, but dark). Its very similar to the orthodox and unorthodox factions in Murim. They're always in a state of Cold War, with minor battles erupting here and there according to the territories' borders. The Union is larger in scale and surrounds the Magocracy, but the latter is in fact much stronger. Only reason they haven't warred with the union yet, is because internal warring is considerably harsher than within the union.

Also from powers to the lore, everything is contrasting. The Union will use energy such as Mana, Aura blade (part of Radiant powers Arts) etc, while the Magocracy energy like dark mana, steel aura blade (part of Dark powers Arts). Heroes will fight Demon kings, etc. There is also Sacred energy/Demonic energy which comes from higher entities such as constellations and Demons, which form the higher plane of existence — Dark heavens (heaven & Gehenna).

Another thing I can mention is the power system : Stars realm. It's relatively simple and well thought out. There are multiple light and darks powers represented each by a key clan/family and their growth is based on the realm you attain through training and enlightenments. As a mortal, you can go from 1-star to 10-stars, and each realm has 3 tiers (low, medium, high). From the 4-stars realm up, each one has special conditions you need to meet and a definite characteristic (ex : infusing will into your blade, defying causal laws, creating your own microcosm, having your microcosm expand to the world itself, etc)

Spoiler

Normally you can't ever manipulate light and dark powers, but MC can. He will even be designed as a hero and go back and forth from his two identities at some point.

[collapse]

Now past the background,

First of all, this is OP MC novel. We all know what this implies— Yes MC is a genius, he himself will call himself a genius throughout it all. Not to mention it's the: my genius encompass all kinds and types of domains so it's crossing over to Marty stu— Yet it kind of works in the end. Because it's mostly restrained to power skills and inherent mental core abilities (tied to his soul). Also, because there are so many obstacles he has to cross to save the world, it would legit be impossible if his growth wasn't fast, and his achievements are impossible without a fast growth. His past identity which gets revealed later also explains his god-send abilities, although the reason behind his mastery over multiple skills definitely was thought up as a « resolve it all when needed » point which is kind of a minus. It's still fun because he isn't simply a genius, he is quite literally a monster when it comes to talent at different power arts, so you get to see him going around trampling and looking down on the supposed « geniuses of this generation » which are actual geniuses! Just nothing before him lol. Others will end up calling him a crazy bastard.

now I love me a good op story, but it gets boring real quick if you don't draw up stakes and this novel fortunately, relatively did. Yes his plans mostly always go as he wants and he seems to have 100+ back-up plans, but there are times the opponent is so much stronger than him you genuinely wonder how the hell he can even get out of that. Then he goes ahead and use his head in the most unconventional ways. Is it always credible ? Mostly, but not all the time. Anyway, wouldn't want MC to die either so passing on that.

Now onto MC. He´s not a complex character. His only goal is to save the world (and drink alcohol lol) and to do that he thinks to has to reign over the whole continent.
Spoiler

he's kind of obliged to because it gets revealed most of the chaos is intentional. It's alluded the Demon emporor and the heavens are plotting stuff. Chris realizes someone has caused his regression, and he even starts to question it way later when his soul rank is transcendant, because before that this kind of self-questioning thoughts were blocked. Anyway there's this whole, will MC succeed in going against his fate ? Thing going on.

[collapse]

Although he's not written as well them, I find him very similar to Cale from TCF, and Lloyd from GED. It's that whole « I'm only saving people, and ultimately resolving the problems of this world for my sake and so I can enjoy a lazy life, so don't misunderstand » archetype. And I love this archetype. Makes for the most scrumptious misunderstandings, which may not be a misunderstanding in the end actually ! Anyway, one notable thing about Christian is his never-ending self-confidence about his talent. Even that one time he did, it ended up coming back stronger as a conviction there's nothing he can't do lol. It's one of the characters you just end up accepting he has unlimited potential and possibilities. I wouldn't say that's bad writing because it is very obviously intentional from the author. It all comes down to preferences in the end. Personally I wish he struggled a bit more but this trait of him has been refreshing sometimes. He's also never losing when it comes to verbal wars. Other than that, the relationships are kinda good. Not in depth, and oftentimes two-dimensional like you would except with this kind of novel, but the bonds he makes are rather enjoyable. I definitely liked his evolving relationship with his little brother, and his grandfather, the head of the clan the most.

Spoiler

Grandpa becomes a doting grandfather ready to protect Christian at all costs lol. He's always proud of him.

[collapse]

As he grows to ultimately becomes the clan head and restores his family's honor and standing, it's fun seeing how he rallies people under him, and how they come to recognize him.

For now there is no romance in sight as he wants to focus on marriage after he saves the world. So only two girls like him (Mary, the maid & his ex-fiancee form the poison clan, forgot her name-Rebecca? Not quite, anyway she's a tsundere), but even for them one is always lightheartedly alluding to it, and the other hasn't explicitly mentioned it yet.

I don't really know what to say more, so yeah. If you search for op MC novels you can snack on without being deeply involved, yet still remain interested, this is one of them. <<less

Well, the story quite middle ground imo..

MC the most 'talented' person ever live, with his talent he could learn any technique in short time, with many titles under his belt, he then enter the hero's party and quickly became indispensable part of it with his various skill, even magic and martial arts, and even using the hero technique he "glances" few times and modify it to suit himself....

TLDR from that the world close to end and the other members thought maybe it would be different if the MC learn magic... more>> and martial arts earlier...

Then ta-da! MC got regressed but into the body of the tr*shy son of a noble, with his previous self skill intact. Its the usual genre (nowadays)..

The dialogue of the characters sometimes feels 'off' imho, some parts just don't quite fit or there are bit context missing when they talk session goes a bit longer, idk what that was but maybe its just me. Plus the 'I'm a genius' repeating every now and then is a bit annoying, we know he is, no need to always repeat that line with a smug expression, but ig its normal cause its 'Shonen' tag so its closer to childish-ish dialogue.

Quite interesting story if you want to read it while waiting other novels to update.

Too short to gives stars atm, I would give it 2.5-3 stars for now but it still early to judge and put a vote in (chapter 13 at the time this review posted). <<less
