So uh, translator (proofreader) here. Decided to write a review after finding out that a surprisingly amount of people are liking this novel. Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language.

So, where do I start? The protagonist may give an impression of being generic like others of this genre by saying things like "I won't change the story, so let's leave it be" but right by chapter 2 he throws the idea out of the window because of his conscience.

The novel has likable characters, everyone pretty much trusts... more>> each other with their lives and it's nice to see their teamwork and them overcoming deathly hurdles along the story.

The protagonist (Ella) explains the strange world logic that makes no sense as simply the game settings.

Spoiler

But after a while Ella notices that everything has a reason, part of a bigger plot.

[collapse]

The protagonist herself is interesting, and along the novel she/him gets confused about her/his identity, giving a sense of crisis, so seeing character development about Ella is nice.

Anyway, that's about it, one of my favorite novels, don't want to spoil too much. <<less

The series is one of the best thing I have ever read, as it gives a breath of fresh air after years of breathing polluted air of common/cliche korean novels that always involves the typical Regression, Transmigration, Reborn and it goes on further. This story might be a typical transmigration story at first where a man became a women haunted spirit, but its done right, at the first of the story man gets transmigrated to a game where he usually played and conveniently is in front of a mirror, "shocking".... more>> Then the man gets greeted by a ghost gal, and they swapped souls because lonely emo western ghost girl was sad that she was trapped in a mirror, swapped bodies with the MC, dies walking through stairs and refuses to elaborate further, its that easy.

The Novel series has an unorthodox start and that's why I fell in love at sight of the novel, its a very interesting and a new interest grabber to a reader with a very good first expression, the plot is great and all.

Like there are Pros to something there are always Cons to a thing, the novel may sound good and all, and that's true for half of the story, Part 2 of the ghost girl Ella extravaganza ends in a new plot, with a conveniently new body surrounded by very suspicious scp wannabe that kinda makes the story stale or nahh but I won't spoil any further.

TLDR IM addicted to the novel and biased to say its 5 Ghost Girls in 5 Ghost Girls. And here is a bonus theory with the spoiler tag. Ooooooo~ spoopy.

Spoiler

I have a theory regarding the next characters and their possible abilities.

First, we already know that MP aka Mephistopheles has 7 unfinished games and there is 7 seats, in the fairy tail group they have, there are Pinocchio, Alice, Ariel, Jack. And three missing, is it a coincidence that there are 7 games and 7 seats? I think not. I think that this characters like Jack, Alice, Ariel, and Pinocchio and the rest came from the respected games made by MP. With that in mind, we can assume that they also has the same experiences as Alice, being from a normal human that is addicted to the game, and then transported in the game as characters in their respective games, being boss enemies/supporting characters and such.

Secondly, their abilities. Might also be affected by the game they came from and their characters played in the game, an example of this is Ella having the abilities to manipulate mirrors, and when she became a devil, it has been changed to a mirror that can summon ghost stories and store items and such, the mirror ability came from Ella, and the ghost summoning came from the game she was in. There is also one more proof, Pierrot, Mrs. Spider and Mary are also in the mirror and the junk demon as well. And also one more thing, Alice in the Wonderland and being Alice in the story might've also affected her abilities as well to an unknown degree, but from my observation it might be a safe haven from monsters and ghost stories to yokai's. With this knowledge we can guess and have an hypothesis on what are their abilities.

The next character will might be, Humpty Dumpty, or Big bad wolf, or Little riding hood.

In fact this is just a Theory, a Novel Theory!!

Firstly, I just love stories where the villain character is misunderstood and feared.

The story only has 4 chapters out so far, but it was a very strong start that surprised me in a great way. I wanted to add a comment to support the story despite there being so few chapters so far.

The MC makes an excellent monster and I can tell that this story is going to be a fun, wild, and weird ride! Even if the story ended right now, I would be satisfied. It's just killing it... more>> so far.

The machine translation is also great. It's fully comprehensible. Not even a hint of brain cancer yet. <<less

I wouldn't bother reading this if you don't really like children and enjoy half-doormat protagonists that are led by the nose, become increasingly juvenile and find the idea of a dude in a little girl's body somehow starting to like candy uncontrollably or acting like a kid only to be ashamed of it to be hilarious. I also would deter anyone who wants anything close to horror, even if only as a part of the story.

To me, this novel's presentation is incredibly misleading. It comes across as something like my... more>> house of horrors, trying to combine comedy and horror with a protagonist that is often misunderstood as a dangerous lunatic due to their actions, the first few chapters further mislead you into thinking that this might be the case. But very quickly, it becomes apparent that this story is far from comparable and is extremely different.

Turns out it was just a several or so chapters before she dropped the act and became a meek girl and everyone started playing house while she's treated like some sort of protector and beloved by all, giving in to all demands for s*upid reasons such as candy or liking the kids. The protagonist is goodhearted by their very nature and also developmentally stunted (mentally, by that I mean they're immature and never really grew up). She gradually becomes an object to be teased and is overprotective of the children while acting pathetic at every opportunity.

Other than that, details are very vague overall, but not in a mystery sense, more like the author never thought much about it. Monster fights are very shallow, there's no immersion. You need a certain sense of humor to appreciate this and if you don't really like children, you will certainly not like it. It reads like a cheap improvised work with one thing after another just thrown in after being been found in a search engine. If I had to guess, the author is either young and this is their first attempt at a novel or they're older and simply a bit untalented and still probably has never written anything before.

There are a lot of interesting and good ideas, but they're not developed properly. It's pretty sad when an author just throws in one idea after another but follows up on nothing.

The translation is pretty bad too, maybe the original is part of the reason. I'm not trying to be rude, I respect the work the translator put in, because it's clearly a lot. But work doesn't necessarily translate to quality. It reads choppily, the flow is so-so at best, a lot of things end up confusing, either not possible to understand at all or you have to stop and think to understand what it probably means, there are also a pretty large amount of grammatical issues. Part of the issue is that they need a good editor, but the biggest issue is probably that it's machine translation. It's edited machine translation and the translator translates some things wrong and more confusing things are either improvised or just left as gibberish. The frequent shifts in perspectives make reading it even more frustrating, but that's the original's fault.

I feel like 2/5 is a fair score. The writing is subpar, the story is simple at best, the characters are frustrating and shallow in personality, the story sets itself up to be misleading and the translation being of so-so quality just makes it even worse. Some people will enjoy this, but people who like confident, intelligent, calculative/creative/clever protagonists, horror, adventure or comedy likely won't appreciate this much. I have zero idea how this got such a high score because it doesn't deserve it at all. Luck, perhaps, or people who found it just happened to love mushy friendship between kids. <<less

Long time not read Horor Novel! Although this is not completely horor, but it's so refreshing! I really like it!

Also, even there's no Yuri tags here, but somehow my mind always go to Yuri route here. Is it the story or my brain just too cultured?

I really like this, I love the characters and the story is great. I always find it interesting when the reason the MC got reincarnated/transported/etc got explained (well partially, not all has been revealed yet) instead of it being 'just cause'

Spoiler

What I like the most though is the fact that the MC tries his best to make the horror game that ends with a bad ending into a happy ending, which is always the reason why I usually avoid the horror genre. I like the concept of Alice who turns 'fear' into 'amusement' and 'horror' into 'adventure' because despite all the danger, they all came back safely, as if they just entered a haunted house in an amusement park.

Like for horror movies for example, even when the protagonist and their pals tries their best to defeat the ghost, more often than not I see the ghost not fully vanquished just biding their time for their next attack, they failed, or it is a pyrrhic victory.

Some people I know often says that it's more realistic that way or whatever but well... the reason I got into reading in the first place is because it's doesn't have to be realistic, because it's fiction. There are already enough suffering in real life, of hard work that ultimately doesn't pay off. I like to see at least fictional characters got their happy ever after.

Well despite what I said, some people do die in the latest chapters but well... it's still a kinder story than most horror genre I've seen.

This story isn't a horror story, it's a story about overcoming fears and making a bleak story into an adventure.

The MC is a man from the modern world who got transported into a horror game and subsequently gender swapped into a psychopathic young girl -- who is also a villain in the original story. She wishes to act as a villain to the game protagonists so the original story wouldn't break down, but ends up helping them because she couldn't watch children die.

The story is incredible. It's complex, mysterious, filled... more>> with amazing foreshadowings, and just fun to read. Despite being a horror story, the story is filed with trust and hope. Every character in the story has a story within each of them. None of them are boring to read, neither are they unlikable. The author did an amazing job giving life to each character. However, I think the MC shines the most among all of them.

This story has an incredible main character named Ella. She's an incredibly lovable tsundere. She's someone that truly wishes well for the original game's main characters, and will sacrifice everything for them. The character dvelopment she receives as the story goes along is insane.

I will avoid spoiling anything more from the story. You should try reading it yourself, you wouldn't regret it. <<less

The whole review of the 2 stars guy is absolutely ridiculous, man reading too much garbage that he thought MC must always be ideal and stuffs. It's not, MC is a person who have both physical and psychological trauma, got transmitted into a typical horror game like what you see on steam, got his body taken and clueless about the situation, fast forward, MC accompany 4 elementary kids to help them survive and have to act like a ghost to not changing the plot so much, if not bad end will happen. An aldults leading children to survive, what the hell did the 2 stars review expect, dude must haven't babysit minors in his hole live lmao. The translation is also great, pov switch give us profound information about what is happening in the character's mind, sorry for the harsh words but if you guys come here to expect MC to be OP, block head and interests in minors like those of the JP MC you should leave. This MC are very human, that's what make the novel enjoyable, not just oh wow MC so OP, a bunch of brainless fighting which serve no purpose. The plot is what make this novel stand out, a trouney of development 5/5, one of the gems that you should try reading. A very beautiful, heartwarming story

I love the idea of this novel, and it is implemented so well..

The foreshadowing is extremely good considering I've only read 43 chapters as you can see through not only the words but also the pictures, it has a good amount of horror (telephone train summing guy spooked me), pictures of the character, and amazing plot.

It's so much fun to read this novel while taking fusses at what is going to happen next.

I like how the author incorporated some other things into it such as Alice in the wonderland, Scp... more>> foundation and some myths/legends.

The bad parts are, not enough chapters and not enough slice of life moments/daily life. I say the latter because I enjoy those daily life/ slice of life moments so much...

Btw why have so many of you read past chapter 43? Like do you all know Korean or smthing? <<less

I usually avoid gender bender genre because I don't know how should I feel about the MC. This here is a magnificent storytelling of a Ghost story game more than meets the eye. The author seems also like to incorporate other popular IPs into the story. They are there to the story not just because of fanfic.

English is not my first language, but the translator made a good choice of translation so that I can follow the story organically. The footnotes are there for some things that may be obscure... more>> to some, but they are not on the way. That's why, I think kudos to the translator to make the footnotes available so anyone needs additional context can follow, but considerate enough to not break those who are still having immersion on the story. <<less

Forgot to rate this after I caught up to the tl, so now I'm sort of guesstimating my chapter number, so it's a 2 or 3 off, but oh well.

In simple terms, this is an incredibly subversive, creative, and interesting read. The base concept and world is a 11/10, and somehow the writing of the characters and plot is even better.

Personally the only flaw I could point out is that not the end of volume/ part 1, the plot is really confusing for what happens. As far as I remember... more>> the author ran out of time or something, since they've written all of this on their phone while being part of the military. (The dedication is crazy)

Luckily, after that is already translated, and explained perfectly all questions you could possibly have from them, so it really isn't an issue, even though readers at the time had an unfortunate time.

This deserves far, far more attention than it gets. Personally, I think that this should be pretty close to top of the ranking for several of the genres it has.

My enjoyment was somewhat increased due to a light understanding of the kinds of horror games this is based on, but isn't really important.

Once again, holy shit, this author had insanely creative ideas for the plot and setting, and the execution was wonderful.

I'll read again once the ending is translated, and it'd probably take an act some vengeful god to make the ending bad, considering how incredible the writing is.

I could genuinely speak for hours about why this is good without taking breaks if prompted.

7/5, it's almost embarrassing to consider giving a 5 star rating to other things in this site, when this is so much better than almost every other thing here.

May be somewhat niche, but if you enjoy any of the main genres of this, you'd probably agree with me in putting this on novelupdates top 10, or at least top 20 novels.

Edit: Just want to say, despite the tl's site being named "mtl rookie, " the quality of translation was fantastic. The translator being incredible is absolutely part of why this is so good. Even though it's mtl, Chirriro manages to make the grammar and flow of sentences better than some natively English books I've read. <<less

A beautiful story.

It's not (really) a horror story but more a story about facing tragedy and fears in a thematic and dramaturgic story. If you understand and connect with the theme and emotions, it will be a beautiful fairytale that you have to read. If this doesn't apply it's a mediocre story that is kinda rushed. The translation is good.

Great story.

Even though it's called a Web Novel it has that fairy tale like feeling to it.

I personally think that If this were to be published as a Light Novel it would become successful.

... more>> This story is very suited for kids and young adults. I am guessing that was the Author's target Audience.

I think this was made as a children's story because the protagonist and her crew are all elementary school students (at first I thought they were Highschool students), I mean just think about the age of an elementary school student (somewhere around 10-11 years old). Young children displaying bravery and wisdom beyond their age is a common trait in children's Stories.

All in all, it's like a re-enactment of Alice in the Wonderland <<less

I kinda enjoyed this. I found it entertaining enough until) (*&^%$#. Couldn't really read afterwards. It's not really all that horror filled. I mean I guess the kids are scared? But really this just feels like a staged fantasy fiction... lol. The whole genderbender thing isn't really a big aspect of it (at least for what I've read) Maybe the fact that MC was an adult plays a part (what with them trying to take responsibility for the kids). This was a very enjoyable read to pick up. Its a cute story about people overcoming their fears and growing stronger in the process, with friendship being a key theme. The world is rich and full of metaphors, and there is plenty of foreshadowing along the way to keep you thinking. The translation itself is pretty good, there are minor mistakes but nothing you cannot easily figure out and keep reading without breaking the flow of things.

If you want a nice read without too much heartache, I highly recommend it.... more>> The TL is up to chapter 55 as of this review, however it looks like there are up to 97 chapters in the raw so there is still more to look forward to.
