Honestly speaking. If you're reading this, please note my advice.

If you're here searching for a romantic-comedy, fluffy story with the cute relationship developments in the middle of the palace, don't try to read and judge bitterly afterwards. If this novel doesn't live up to your expectations, you're in the wrong assuming the wrong genres reading the summary.

But if you want a realistic story, the battle of survival within the palace, scheming that taken years to built, some self-satisfactory, masks that has to be worn, and the weariness to choose the... more>> right person to trust, you're in the right page.

They did wrong and hurt you, so you hurt them. They wanted to kill you, so you have to kill them first. In order to survive and protect your loved ones.

But in the middle of cold-blooded war, there was haven. The person you could trust, the person you could love and love you back. Which made a nice ending.

The main characters are cunning. The writer is, too. <<less

The overall story is nice, but there are a few inconsistencies that prevent it from being really great.

It starts fairly well, with decent character and writing, but it suddenly changes towards a "revenge" plot, when the main characters had stated they wanted to live freely.

When it nears the end, everything starts to speed up a lot, to the point where you can ask if it wasn't intended to be quite a bit longer at first.

What's a bit sad is that in all of this, the main characteristics of the two... more>> main characters are mostly stripped, making them much less interesting characters.
Most of the "opponents" end up having unsatisfying death too, so much so that it contradicts the "revenge" motive for the killing.

Aside from this though, the story doesn't try to elongate situations pointlessly just to have 500 chapters, and there are very few characters that pop out of nowhere just to make new enemies, so it is a bit refreshing.

The translation is more than ok, and the decision to leave out the chinese "speech parts" (like 'bewang', 'nubi' and other terms that are usually used in these novels), making it much easier to read normally.
Obviously, leaving those out also costs it a bit in giving us a better understanding of how every character talks to each others, but too many of those terms really detracts from the flow for people new to them.

All in all, a very correct novel that is completely translated and very much worth a try, even if just for the parts before the "revenge" turn. <<less

Enjoyable, up until it wasn’t. For some inexplicable reason, the author decided to focus on “revenge” later on. The male lead was much the same for the story, but I ended up completely disliking the heroine for her actions in revenge. The characters just became too petty for me to continue reading.

Average novel, nothing outstanding but also nothing that puts people off. I would say that the only dumb thing in the novel is how oversimplified everything was.

This novel is actually pretty good and I really recommended it! Translator did a really great job and there are barely any grammars. I finished this novel within 2 days lol and I enjoyed reading it all the way through. Yeah, there are a lot of schemes and deaths but that didn't bother me because the story is too good to just stop half way. This story has good comedy, romance, and contain a bit of mature scenes (i like it). Overall, it's worth a read!

It's certainly not well written. The conversation flows are stiff and robot-like. There's a lot of plot-hole, the schemes are crude, characters are shallow and 1D, no development, etc. The selling point is only smutty scenes

I can't help but compare this to other works with similar plot, and thinking this is a downgrade version. I don't see any point to continue reading this novel cause it's quite predictable with mediocre writing style.

It's okay. The story has a good balance, the arcs weren't overlapping with problems. It's a pretty okay story.

There's just not that much action in my opinion, especially in the romance aspect. It also lacks character development. Male lead was alright, his lady was pretty bland though. She was alright the first half of the story, but later on she was just a forgettable presence (she was still in the story and somewhat relevant, but didn't do much...)

This novel is a light read.... The MC and the ML get married early and the story is mostly about their married life together (aka smut >.>)

Unfortunatly near the middle parts when the novel tries to focus more on ''plot'' rather than bedroom matters it goes downhill.... other than that its awesome!

I'm disappointed I can't read the side story. Oh well.

HBAG isn't bad. The characters really stood out and it was honestly fun reading through the story. The humor is fantastic (poor Bei Dou... Pei Jin is merciless) and the interactions between the MC and ML isn't boring. The contrast between ML's teasing and thoughts make me laugh. He acts like he has all the cards but he just wants his wife.

Meanwhile, for all its good points, I think this story doesn't have enough chapters. The pace isn't horrible but at... more>> the end, it truly was quite overwhelming. I feel that some issues could be plot points could be fleshed out more and it could've been more interesting than it is. If I want to summarize this novel in a few words, I would say 'enjoyable but rushed.'

Spoiler

For example, what happened to Huang Guo and widow Li in the end? The author could have written more details about the MC aside from getting 'eaten' by the ML. Maybe her interactions with other women, her managing the household, making connections/friends, etc. but it seems like the ML is far more well-rounded as a character than the MC. After her revenge scheme was over, it was just the plot focusing on her pregnancy and that's it.

Really wish I could read the side story so I know what happened to Pei Khan in the end. Did he marry? Did he live happily in the end? Wish he was inspired by his ninth brother's love towards his ninth's sister and decided on having one wife or something.

[collapse]

It's a good enough read but lighter than, say, TBAVW. The plot points seem complicated but because of the pacing, everything is revealed one after another and feels a bit dissatisfying. Overall, recommended for a short read that you can complete in one go. <<less

The story started focusing about the female lead and had light atmosphere. If I described the genre would be shoujo, comedy, romance, smut. But suddenly it turned and get darker, focusing about revenge and palace politics. The female lead's importance dimmed and the story focused more about the male lead's capability to survive in the game of throne.

The summary doesn't describe well what this series about.

Entertaining read but the dialogues were horrible. The conversations felt stiff and forced. The sentences were almost crude like it was put together just for the sake of having them. I don't know if it was because of the translation or the author just couldn't be bothered. Every time I encountered conversations like "I'm hungry" "You did not eat?" "No" "Okay, here food." "Okay. Thanks" I wanted to quit reading then and there.

I honestly love this book. Warning, this is of historical setting; the palace, the throne, the imperial households, the power struggles of ministries and other plotting are the large center of the story. I don't understand why someone says its plot suddenly took turn into "revenge" path. It is in the summary, MC and FL is not as they seems, they wear masks. The story line never had been a revenge for MC, and the MC clarified it at the end. I can only call it karma for the Emperor... more>> and cursed fate for MC. The story line had always been revenge for FC, and she got her wish in the end. Also karma for her greedy yet weak father, and the cheap stepmother (seducing some else husband yet pregnant with other man's child tsk tsk)

Spoiler

When the Emperor asked at the end if all he had done; killing his brothers (which he never did directly), plotting against him, uprooting imperials household are all for the throne. MC denied and it is proven when in the epilogue the throne goes to his 13th brother. MC said all he had done is for his father recognition, to be his son. Since if you read the novel you know that MC had been rejected as early as he is conceived and where is the karma slapping the Emperor in the face? It is when MC answered him, it shows how similar they are in their pursuit of their ambition and out of all his son, MC is indeed the most similar to him. Without FC and their son (at this point), MC undoubtedly will behaved exactly as the Emperor had once. I also see how in control MC is with his deed, if Emperor had recognised him as his son earlier, all the tragedy can be evaded. Unfortunately, MC also had depth understanding of his father, so the story spins the way it is.

[collapse]

Every character got justified and their endings too. The author never forget or suddenly abandoned a character. Most important, every character stay true to their designated character. Once each character fulfilled their role, we can exclaimed "Ahh, so that is how it is", or "That is his truthful self. The retribution is acceptable."

I love the FC, she is cunning, tough, clever and can be tricky when she wants and for MC, don't even mention it.
Spoiler

They both had clear grudge; who they want to be dead and who they actually sympathize as victims of their revenge. Like FC stepsister. FC does not like her but don't want her to ends up crazy like that and even planned to take care of her forever since the grudge she had had always been towards that stepmother and her father (too bad that sister is doomed to be killed by the hypocritical crown prince). The MC had never spilled any of his brothers blood, directly and also didn't do revenge due to his beloved imperial uncle death by his father's hands. He wants to be a son to his father and he indeed manipulates many people personalities until the end to attain this (no one tells him why his father doesn't like him, what her maid mother had done; all the backing he got is when he was small, his uncle and adoptive consort mother protection towards all the unsightly things). The crown prince suicide because he could never ignore his hypocrites sides and continues the act as white lotus once the reality is doused on him, his other imperial brother become too greedy making him easy to be lured but ultimately the ever suspicious Imperial Father strikes him with his own sword (I hate this ruthless Emperor so much). With such father, it is not surprising how all sons including MC got their wicked way of living

[collapse]
Since the beginning everything had been planned by him and even when he is about to be swayed until forgetting his original intention, he stay unperturbed, thanks to his wife and son (crying son). The black-bellied couple are very lovable in which they clearly aren't overpowered (no immediate backup such as family that stands behind them, need to work off in rural region in order to gain loyal subordinate). And their couple banters/jokes are the most precious gem of this book. The book is quite rushed towards the end but still enjoyable enough for me. <<less

This is one of my favorite! The Male Lead is so cunning and I like when hes jocking with Female Lead.... If you want sweet romance and smut, I recommend this novel

But, the scheme that these couple did is somewhat harsh and cruel ('cause they are connected to royal family....i guess so) for me, but ' u reap what u sow' right?

This is probably one of the best books I've read. Strong female and male lead. It has it shares of drama, politics, comedy, and romance. I read this on another website.

I read this whole story and I have to tell you, it is amazing. A well written story with feelings and some dirty jokes. The last chapter and side story just bring the emotions out of you with its love between characters and everything. I have read many mains stream novels TMW, LLS, MW, the desolate era, and many others but this one is only one I find worthy enough to write a review about.
You should definitely read this.

I'm rereading the story, and just for kicks, I read the reviews. Shock! I think the summary fooled people into thinking this was a historical romantic comedy along the lines of snarky cat and mouse play that ends with true love. If you, like me, pick it up again after forgetting the summary, you would be totally immersed in a world of light intrigue, revenge, and human relationships in a historical setting.

By "light", I mean that, in comparison to other historical intrigue stories,... more>> the focus seems to be more on the relationship between the MC's and they just happen to have other, heavy stuff going on. (As contrast, MGQ has a woman tossed about by circumstance, culture, and her own traitorous heart, damn that fleshy beating beast. If that MC is barely managing to tread water, these MC's are standing in the shallow end with time to splash each other mischievously.)

Strangely enough, one of the things I like the most about it is that the female MC is a strong minded girl hiding culturally inappropriate behavior without the need for the rebirth/reincarnation crutch. The love story is sweet with elements of kindergarten style flirting. The partnership is sassy. The intrigue is just adult enough to make things interesting without making things too heavy for a fun read. Keeping in mind that old politics are dirty, things get dark-ish, and the emperor is petty (but what kind of emperor have we not seen?), I probably wouldn't read this as a bedtime story to children, but it's only a deal breaker if you were shopping for a different genre entirely. <<less

I enjoyed this through and through. There were ups and downs, but I couldn't put it down till it ended. The translation was really well done and the story was engaging without being overly complicated.

It starts off a lot more light-hearted and comedic as we read about the dynamics between Yan Shi Ning and Pei Jin. Their relationship was well thought out and their chemistry is great. You could see how much Pei Jin loves her and how she really starts to reciprocate his feelings. Those two have such a... more>> sharp mind and when they both put their mind into it, the become like the perfect couple!

Spoiler

When they teased Bei Dou non-stop, especially before he got married and during his wedding night! That was comedy gold!

[collapse]

The second half does seem to go more to the dark side, but I think it's an acceptable shift in tone as this is the Royal family that we are talking about. You don't survive the Imperial Palace being nice and gullible. While some consider the revenge plot to be shoe-horned in or random, I think it was well-placed.

Spoiler

I mean, imagine figuring out that your dad treated you like sh*t for another woman and her daughter and then finding out that that woman killed your mother. I mean, anybody would want revenge! The dad wasn't as horrible, but he was an idiot so while our female MC dislikes him, it's not like she wants him dead either.

One of the point of this arc was to show that even when Yan Shi Ning found out and planned the whole revenge, she didn't truly delight in their demise, she still has heart and even felt bad for her sister Yan Shi Ting who got played real hard.

[collapse]

If anything, the one plot point that I felt the author just put in there for sh*ts and giggles was
Spoiler

why the emperor hated Pei Jin. In the beginning, it was said that the Emperor merely didn't think much of him, then we find out that he hated him..? Cause of his mother...? Cause he was a control freak..? I think it would've been better if they didn't add that at all.

[collapse]

Overall, I enjoyed it thoroughly and would definitely recommend this to anyone! It's a good story, has good comedy, some drama and it's also complete! <<less

I actually thought that this was a very cohesive narrative. It was what it was from beginning to end; a rare kind of steadiness that was probably helped by the length (rather, the lack thereof). It was just a little boring...? Well, many things happen and many tragedies are perpetuated but I found it difficult to connect with the characters emotionally. TBH I think the core of the story is not the romance but rather the lesson "revenge begets more revenge" and "violence begets more violence."

Spoiler

Basically, ML and MC just wanna live a carefree life eating food and playing around but nobody will let them. And so they have to continue responding to schemes until literally everyone is dead. Also it definitely felt like a bad end for poor Thirteenth Prince since he gets stuck in the palace as Emperor as all his loved ones have to move away from the capital because "a mountain can't house two tigers."
