"Your Majesty and this sinner just happened to be born on two sides of a border, were we not? But once we step over that line, does all sympathy, all humanity, disappear?"

Huai An is at its core a story about home. Where is our home if not for the place where we were born? Yet does our birthplace define us, entrap us and force us to hate and only hate those who were born elsewhere?

As the translator of this novel, I found Huai An to be a poignant tale of... more>> belonging, where two men who, by all accounts, should have remained enemies forever found refuge in each other instead. The author has a wonderful literary style that perfectly encapsulates the themes of this story, from the desolate frontier wilderness to gilded halls of court. Yet my favourite aspect of this work would have to be its use of classical poetry, namely from the Classic of Poetry, to create an immersive reading experience that all but transports us into the story.

Overall, I would say that Huai An is a short story that is well worth a read. For those who are cautious about committing upon seeing the 'BE' tag, you may rest assured in knowing that the sequel is without doubt, HE. <<less

This is a beautiful story, thank you translator for picking this up and did such a nice, beautiful translation. I'm a fan of historical romance, though I can't say I'm fond of 'mpreg' but this story however satisfy me to the core. MC is strong, he learn how to accept his new life (from being a war prisoner to general of his past enemy country). He grieved, he forgave and he loves. ML.. I love his character, he's strong and later become a wise monarch. He got married for... more>> the benefit of the country as per MC suggestion but he only love one person and that is Huai An. This story will make you hurt and grieve for both main character and that's why you need to read the sequel ' summons the soul' to enjoy this bittersweet romance. <<less

My heart will ache for a while for this one. I can't even describe the pain while reading this and thinking how there are two people who experienced this in the times when there were no peace hurts me emotionally.

One thought came to mind "Is it selfish not to be selfless, even once in a while?"
