This is an absolute treat to read if your looking for abuse, but if youre not? Dont. Dont even try to touch this novel because it tackles really heavy topics that those who are looking for fluff wont appreciate

youve been warned: keep away if youre looking for fluff, this doesnt have an ounce of fluff in it

This is too good. Although it can be embarrassing at times, if you can get past the embarrassing moments you'll love it. I recommend to anyone and everyone.

I freaking love LOVE LOOOOOVE this novel. This novel has actually drained out real tears out of me. I've re-read this novel just for the sake of shedding tears and get my emotions flowing. Like a menstrual cycle, it's good to let it flow every now and then.
it's got action, drama, romance, monsters and shit! just, everything to keep you on your toes. I do wish there was smut scenes; like for their first night... I wanted some real juicy details there!!! Especially after ML said he didn't have... more>> much experience!!!!
urgh!
so it lacked in that area, then again, I'm just a perv. So maybe it's just my own selfish desire.

regardless of that, this novel is flawless. Couldn't have been written better. <<less

careful reading this one if u dont like dark stories (!!)

up to this point, I dont regret clicking on it and it might even be one of my favorites. it handles heavy topics very well, and it gets frustrating at some parts but personally I think thats why it is so amazingly written. some reviews and comments say MC is too weak and s*upid, and I dont know if were reading the same thing bc she doesnt act the way she acts for no reason, shes literally traumatized u... more>> guys, her mental state is f*cked up... and if anything I think shes strong in her own way. u dont have to be a "controlling bad bit*h who knows it all" to be a strong woman yk. the fact that shes still holding on after all that happened to her is already enough. and btw of course there wont be any character development for her in the first chapters bc, once again, shes traumatized. its not like u wake up and u go "i feel better now" and everything is fixed lmao it takes time.

honestly, I relate to her so much, having to walk on eggshells, putting up a mask in front of everyone and not being able to trust easily or feel like everyone is plotting against u... a lot of these chapters hit hard and very close to home. I think I cried with some of them bc a lot of the thoughts of MC are thoughts ive had myself before.

theres some things I might not fw from the story or things that dont really make sense to me, but nothing that completely ruined it for me yet. the characters are interesting enough, and getting to know their different points of view really made this so much better.

definitely worth a read if u dont mind the heavy themes in this. <<less

ABUSE. TRAUMA. EATING DISORDER.

This novel is just a pit of everything messy. And you know what? Damn the male lead and his abusive household. At this point I don't even want her to be with him. She's much more happy with her demons than amongst those "humans".

First of all, this is something I want to address in case there's someone wanting to read this novel and are looking for reviews: don't be fooled by the cheesy title. I found the novel way, way, heavier than the title makes it out to be.

On to the review. Here's what I like about it:

    • Sure, you could argue that the characters are overpowered but I like how it contrasts with them not being omniscience. Often in isekais, the main characters have these super effective spy networks or secret guards everywhere, random witnesses everywhere, but that's not the case here. The judge things from what they witness or hear themselves, and it's not always the right judgement but it makes sense for them to be incorrect since they only have the information they have at hand. To summarize this point, it feels realistic. I'm not trying to make excuses for them, because 99% of the characters need therapy but they also try to correct themselves and take responsibility for their actions once they find out they're wrong.
    • FL's character. She makes sense. She's flawed, she's comparably 'weak' compared to other isekai MC's where they're suddenly infallible. She's emotional, she's a goof. She's resilient, but so, so, real. She's strong, she's insecure... What I like about her character is that the author perfectly shows what humans are like. An example is just because a person is depressed, it doesn't mean that they're visibly sad every second of every day. It becomes clear that the FL is not in the best state mentally, but she also has moments where she's doing okay, laughing, enjoying, but it doesn't erase her issues. Despite (or in spite) of the cards she's dealt in life and her past (and current) experiences, she still looks forward to a better tomorrow for herself so she tries to live on. She sometimes wears masks, but for me it's understandable. Some people also hate her for her weaknesses or actions, but fail to understand or remember her past and how it might have affected her. I personally don't think weaknesses and flaws (or an emotional MC) make a bad character as long as they try their best, and I see in FL that she does. I just find her character very realistic.
    • ML's support. His wife has mental health issues. This resonates with me personally. Initially, he's clueless about his wife's issues and insecurities, but it can't be helped, they got married in a snap. But he tries to communicate, and with his encouragement FL learns to open up. FL needed someone who listens to her and believes her, he became just that. He learns of her insecurities and finds ways to assure her. He trusts and believes her unconditionally. He supports her with what she wants. He's conscious of how his actions might affect her mental health even indirectly. He encourages her to appreciate herself more, be more selfish, to speak up, and yet he never pressures her.
    • The characters are really fleshed out. Why is FL not standing up for herself? Why is ML's sister so s*upid? Why is FL's older brother so f*cked up? We are sufficiently given enough background on characters to learn about their reasons and drives. It's not always essential to all characters, but it is always welcome for more immersion (and sympathy or hatred LOL).
    • The side characters (the knights and FL's pets) give some sort of breather from all the heavy tones. Chemistry is great.
    • The final conflict (and the buildup) feels very grand. Tensions are very high and I really liked how awfully bloody messy everything got. It just felt appropriate, especially for how tense and heavy the overall tone of the novel is.
      Spoiler

Someone died horribly and I'm still super sad about it. It's so heartbreaking.

I was spoiled alot before reading this so the ML's cold and uncaring behavior towards everyone including the FL, didn't bother me much. So when Izek show changes, I felth that kilig and was rather happy that romance between the two is starting to blossom. I could not remember the other tragedy stories I've read so far but this is one of my favorite.

I created an account on NU to write a review for this absolute gem of a novel. I am really thankful for the translator who has picked up this masterpiece. And I am really happy to see that it is not the generic transmigration novel where the MC has it easy and uses the novels/previous owner memories to her advantage and everyone loves her instantly including the ML without any reason. Its good to read the thoughts of the side characters as well and I have never felt this emotional... more>> or attached to an MC like Ruby. I love her so much and it is so heartbreaking to see her go through the abuse and her thoughts make me so sad. I can't stop crying while reading this novel and the author did a great job. I like that the ML is always warm and loving towards the MC and respects her opinions and I love that she is slowly opening up to him. <<less

This is indeed amazing, and for some reason I could empathize more with the FL rather than the strong ones I feel she was more realistic and I was more close to the character, but tbh I know she is depressed but I think she should just tell ML about the psycho brother already, and the amount of misunderstandings that occurs is soo annoying that it PISSES me off. Like I love the characters and even the ML, despite his aggressive nature he is patient and gentle with the FL.... more>> But this prolonged sets of misunderstandings is starting to get annoying and if the ML also misunderstands I'm not reading it. This novel is so emotional. Since there are so many criticisms and negative reviews I decided to write a review too. First, this story revolves around FL's abuse, anxiety, Anorexia, ptsd. Rather than making the story to ideal and making the characters to be ideal this is somewhat very close to the bitter reality. On an one side there's the FL lead who is not very strong but have a strong desire to survive. ML on the other hand is, ignorant. People will debate whether the ML deserves the FL... more>> or not. Somewhat I agree that it will be better if FL ended up with someone better but they repent on their mistakes and tried to understand eachother which lead them to have feelings for each other. Anyhow there are character developments which is not fast progressed but realistically progressed. This story has not taken mental disorders lightly, for that Credits should goes to the author. Overall a good story. Can give 4.3/5.0 <<less

I liked this a lot at the beginning but then slowly lost interest. I thought it was interesting and could understand why the FL had an eating disorder. Honestly, I'm surprised not more FLs would have some kind of mental disorder from all their tragic pasts and then being transmitted into novels. Anyways, I thought that was an interesting take. And all her struggles and her distrust of others felt very in tune with the story and her past. A lot of WNs have the FL somehow come into the... more>> story and automatically know how to take charge and remember every little detail and I liked that in this story, the FL didn't. She was just trying her best to stay alive. I also liked her internal thoughts. She's a pretty funny FL.

What lost my interest was more the ML. I felt he turned 180 with his feelings without a clear reason why. Also, there wasn't enough pining for me in this story. I ended up dropping at ch 50 but may pick it up in the future again. <<less

I actually thought this would be bumped on my top 5 best manhwa adaptation/novel. Because it has all the right element tbh (good plot, amazing character, great climax of story, great writing). Unfortunately, it fell flat by the ending as well as the side story. It was such a disappointment, probably author just wanted it to end I guess.

Yes, trigger warning for this novel-- there is a lot of abuse, especially from family members. There's also mentions of eating disorders.

This is one of my favorite novels of all time. I love Ruby's narration because, despite all the tragedy and horrible things that have happened to her, she can be really funny. I disagree heavily with most of the reviews dragging the ML: ... more>>
Spoiler

Ruby is an unreliable narrator. She misunderstands a lot of the ML's facial expressions because her background has made her grown accustomed to being disliked. There is one scene early on where the ML does get genuinely angry with her, but this is later shown to be a misunderstanding and there are hints throughout the novel about Ruby being an unreliable narrator, so it's not that the writer changed their mind about the ML's personality halfway through the novel.

[collapse]

Imo, a lot of the characters in this novel are really well-written. There are a few characters who are genuinely good people, but most of the characters are more nuanced. They don't all automatically simp for the MC like side characters sometimes do in other novels, and they have their own motivations for acting a certain way. There aren't that many cartoonishly evil characters in this novel, which I find to be a rarity for this genre. <<less

The premise of the novel is great, mainly because of the author's bold approach to talking about emotional abuse, depression, and anorexia. The way the story talks about these kinds of things is quite realistic. I love how Ruby (MC) builds all her relationships out of lies, how she tries to make herself look harmless, how she grows up to be a devious person with low self-esteem, and how sometimes her PTSD can be triggered by literally anything. That's a plus point for me. Because a lot of the books... more>> I've read don't detail the depth of the character's trauma which makes it difficult to be taken seriously. I also like the fact that Ruby's POV (MC) shouldn't be taken seriously because it's not accurate, it's based on her feeling not the truth. Her POV always speaks of distrust of other characters, and that's what makes her even more natural as a victim of family abuse. The way ML was cold towards her at first was great too. Why? because he is an enemy of his country and it is natural for her to act like one. I like it when MCs don't fall in love too easily but go through several incidents and misunderstandings before finally standing in the same place.

What I don't like about this story is that the ML is too overpowered and the ending is forced, which makes it uncomfortable to read. The ending happened so fast and so easy? like it was basically a war but to easy to end. And I feel like the author has difficulity to express emotions in words? I don't know if it is because of the translation or not, but some of the sentences are hard to understand.

Overall it is a pretty good read with pretty solid world and character building minus some unnecessary drama and sidestory... <<less

Oh, boy. This one is hard. Hard because I like it very, very much. But it is frustrating to read.

So the MC was isekaied in a novel she had read. Normal. But she is a villainess. Also usual. And her husband will kill her. Ultimate hardcore usual. So she has to survive somehow. This could explain the basic plot of most of isekai shoujo/josei novels. The difference in this one is that the MC's previous life and isekai life are so similar that it is scary. Some points can spoil... more>> your fun, so:

Spoiler

She was a Korean adopted by a Spanish giga rich family. But they treat her like thrash, as a trophy daughter that is useless and her mistreatment is the norm. Heavy sh*t I tell you. And in the isekai world, she is the daughter of the Borgia pope, the ultimate corrupt pope of all, but she is treated the same as in the old world, with the brother whipping her for fun and his "twisted love possessive feels". So she is beyond f*cked in this setting. Add to that the fact that she is married to a chad paladin with monster power and famous for being celibate. And he will be the one to kill her if the story goes as the novel. So she tries to change her fate while evading her bizarre family. But he is scared as f*ck. She sees him as a new oppressor more than anything. And he does not help at all. Being blunt and treating her sarcastically all the time, even in front of her (attempted) cutesy acts to get his care, and avoid the bad ending. And so you get a MC that suffered both psychologically and fiscally trying to get near of a potential aggressor trying to survive her old aggressors. This by itself is f*cked up. But then you know that first, she is not the most reliable narrator, what makes sense, she is a victim that had both lives so f*cked up that she got bulimic at some point, in both worlds.

The acts of the husband/ML get strange, he seems to accept her somewhat or, at least, tolerate her. But her scaredness in face of his "aura" get the best of her expressions. And he starts to notice it. Then you get to know that he did not have the happiest childhood. He was the one that found his mother hanged when she su*cide. So he kind of distanced himself from human contact, having a dysfunctional relationship with the rest of the family, to put it lightly. So he is incapable to deal with his new (arranged) wife that seems to tremble just from hearing his name. And as he tries to distance himself from her she ends up suffering in the new environment, with basically no support. This devolves into the frustrating part as you hope for the healing that both need so much to begin already.

There is some satisfaction to be had even then, as he treats her nice sometimes, which is unexpected from his character. And if you read the manwha it gets better, you see his sudden realization of how his negligence has impacted so much her well-being. I am a f*cking sucker for this type of slaps most ML of shoujo should get, thank you, author. This has yet to happen in the novel, but there are some hints. I just hope that the novel description of his wrath over the aggressors is detailed and brutal.

[collapse]

Anyway. This is good. Brutal and ugly. But good nonetheless. You get to see a lonely, scared (both types), and broken MC trying her best against all odds to survive in the most negative setting she could face. Even alone she tries to keep up and face it the best she can. And when she first makes dependable and reliable connections it gets very satisfying. And if the spoilers I read in the forum are true, even with a somewhat rushed and convoluted ending, it is a good novel to read.

Spoiler

Popo best boy ever. I want to see her wild adventures with Popo and co. As a what-if of her happy days as the forest witch. It would be the best what-if/side story to this tale. Her freeness for this sad and hurtful world would be so nice to see.

Found this series by chance and this is the first web novel I ever read and it got me immediately falling in love. Hard. NO, tbh I was obsessed with this novel which later resulting in me discovering a new hobby - reading novels. O//

The story itself is interesting. Every chapter got me totally immersed in it. Excited and curious about what will happen next. Tragedy is a new genre for me and yeah it was well written that my heart really aches so much reading this ;~; Nevertheless, I... more>> love the FL and ML characters and the way their relationship develops in time. Ugh, I just love them!

Totally recommended. Cant say another word to describe, I just love love loveeee this novel. Can't I give this 10/5 for the rating instead? Lol. Feeling super grateful for the author - Thank you for creating this story, which is a masterpiece in my opinion. And thank you for the translation teams that makes this happening. Can't read it without you guys and I'm super duper excited -Can't wait for the next updates :D

Updated: back here since I completed this novel this time ;~; there's still some side stories left but nevertheless I feel sad bc it's going to an end but uh I seriously love this novel from the early chapters till the ending chapters. <<less

I first saw this as a manhwa; I liked it so much that I immediately went to the novel. I generally avoid reading anything with heavier and darker elements. Despite that, I really enjoyed reading this. Issues like bulimia, depression, su*cide, bullying and family abuse were realistically integrated without becoming the main focus. And the internal monologues of someone recovering from trauma/PTSD were spot on.

So why did I like this?

  • I genuinely liked the flawed but well intentioned main characters
  • even side characters were well-developed with clear motivations and personal development
  • the translation was well done and the novel length was perfect: meaty but not overwhelming while retaining its primary genre of romance
  • I laughed aloud at some of the awkward juxtapositions--especially when the monsters were interacting with the paladins and the ML as well as the final extra story
  • standard tropes abounded [leads miscommunication and misunderstanding each other, jealous and manipulative side characters, power struggles] but they were resolved without reaching nauseating levels
This delightful novel is definitely worth a read.
