【if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you】

The abyss, the most feared thing by the human race today. The animals infected by the abyss mutate into monsters, and humans are reduced to walking corpses.

Lu Tinghan is an abyss watcher. He has been guarding the world’s most terrifying abyss for ten years.

This abyss is not only scary, but also strange.

Throw the garbage down, after a few days, the garbage will be buried safely next to the abyss – like someone took a shovel and tossed it all night to bury them.

Throw hazardous waste down, after a few days, the waste will be thrown back with unbridled fury.

Lu Tinghan: ?

Ten years later, he left the post and became the youngest general in the Alliance.

The next day, the abyss was also gone.

——The whole thing disappeared and turned into flat land.

The whole world was shocked.

Until one day, there was a knock on Lu Tinghan’s door.

A boy with little devil horns stood outside the door, with delicate features and bright eyes. Obviously, he was scared to death, but he still plucked up the courage to say: “Hello, I, I am Abyss, can you continue to stare at me? QAQ”

He added: “I have helped you bury the garbage every day, oh!”

During their long time together, Lu Tinghan learned two things:

1. Staring at your abyss every day, the abyss will be happy

2. When the abyss is happy, it will purr toward you

I love it. Yes, it has similarities to the Little Mushroom, but I honestly felt this was on par or better than it. The author managed to make it more light but still hold the tragedy that humanity goes through. The writing is well done and so is the translation.

100% recommend to read if you like these types of books.

This story is a very beautifull, heavy and light at the same time, one. 🎆 A lot of people say it's dark and heavy, similar to The Little Mushroom, yes in a sense it is, but in TLM you feel broken and cruhed again and again, you never gain hope, you cry all the way and in the last moments is the only moment you cry tears of relief and new hope since you were broken so much you cannot have other feeling than these.

Here you may feel a bit hopeless... more>> at times but you will be save each and every time you may fear, since the story will heal you with it's little moments of hope. It tells you "all will be alright in the end" from the start to end.

So I agree it's similar but nor really.

As for the story give it a read if you like to see pure love, so pure that no obstacles can even appear in front of it because if even the throught surfaces it will be turned into love the moment it sees the light of day. 🌠 It's a story you will flash throught in a day or two, very easily read and great news! For these like me who cannot wait for translation, the MTL is absolutelly readable ✨️

And a bit about the characters, first talk about tge side ch. They are very good here, only good people, showing the little abyss so much beauty in the world. And there are also funny moments.

As for the MC, no other word can descibe him better than a little snowdrop 🤍, sometimes a bit silly, but you have to understand, he is an abyss, what you see and view normal is completely different for him.

The ML? I really love him, the one word to describe him? Reassurance, I feel so reassured every time he is on the scene, he is the hope of humabity and the home of abyss. Maybe he is too cliche but for me his combo and this MC are the best ever combo.

And lastly the monsters, why I also evalueate them? Because to me they were falling start on the sky, you see so many but when you think about it they are always alone, and doomed to fall without finding home. But thankfully here, the monster found the light to guide them.

Now to say, the story is similar to TLM but completely different too, you will love every character here, it will make you feel relaxed and hopefull, you can read it at lightning speed, finishing even not knowing it's the end already. Very good to read if you are not looking for all the shitty dog blood drama.

I really reccommend it, you won't regret! 🕳👨‍✈️ <<less

Reviews are right, this story is similar to Little Mushroom, but I'd say the characters are different and the feeling is much more hopeful. This story, at its core, is a story about humanity. Everyone, despite their differences, wants to work together, wants to let the human race succeed; everyone is connected by their humanity. People don't have the luxury to achieve their dreams or live comfortably, but each day is a good thing because you get to see your loved ones. Characters in this story have brief screen time, but they are complex and have their own motivations. It's very mature and nuanced, and I love how despite how the MC is generally ignorant of humanity, this doesn't mean he is s*upid or is obtuse for the sake of it. He tries earnestly to understand humanity, and to become someone that can help humanity. The ML is also so complex. Being a leader is expectedly a very lonely job, and though he is distant from the pubic, he believes in humanity and tries his best to save it because he wants to see ordinary days. His confession is also so breathtaking and genuine. I had a hard time believing that he was a fictional person.

"I told you to witness [humanity's] story. Now I am greedy. I want to be your story."

[collapse]
this quote made me sit back for a few moments.

this story is so intimate and genuine. It is very sad, but even if bad, terrible things happen, the moments that make up today and the hope of a future unites everyone.

There were several times when I had to pause and bookmark the chapter because the writing was so beautiful.

The plot is a bit similar to Shisi's Little Mushroom (non-humanoid protagonist and general main lead) and are both equally my favorite novel to date. Despite being a doomsday/ apocalypse plot, I like the fact that it read a bit like a slice of life novel would, following the protagonist as they witnessed humanity's struggle to survive. It was like I was watching Shi Yuan become human.

Additionally, I also like the fact... more>> that the relationship between these two is much sweeter from the get-go. Despite the obstacles, it really warmed my heart to read their interactions.

Despite the few low reviews due to its somber nature, I hope people will still read it. That way, it'll attract the attention of an official publishing house and go into print and hopefully, that day is when I can buy a physical copy c: <<less

This novel is on the extreme part of gruesome, pull-no-punches spectrum.

The author doesn't coddle you or spare you any imagination on the gore part, you're expected to stomach the descriptive situation and carry on. I'm also amazed that the author was able to paint a realistic humanity experiencing a devastating catastophe, their actions were believable and the difficult but necessary decision-making was treated with the momentum it deserved.

The relationship between the leads isn't that palpable so far, let's wait and see.

And this novel's cute. Very cute.

Started out great, became somewhat boring and flat.

First of all, I got my hopes up, because lots of reviews compared this novel to "Little Mushroom " but it can't hold a candle to it. The kind of apocalypse is rather close to it.... mutated wildlife and the last 3 human cities fighting for survival, with almost no chance. The likeness ends here.

MC is not human but from the beginning he is friendly with humans. He is incredibly native and has no common knowledge. He has some monster characteristics (horns... more>> and tail), like mutated people, but is still the chest bun in the apocalypse. I have to say the writer did a nice job with MC and especially when describing his body language, where the tail always gives MC away. MC might be able to lie, but his tail can not.

While MC is a sunny character, taking in all the new experiences and human behavior, ML is more on the restrained side. Powerful, rational and not exactly known for feelings but all of this changes for MC. He goes on dates and let MC run wild in private but his decision making as a General, stay strong, even to the point where he can sacrifice himself for humankind.

The story itself started out good but became just so so later on. Basically it becomes the feeling of filler story. MC is always observing humans and wanting to know their story. At first, this setting was nice.... to meet people and then discovering the story behind them. This became a running theme and basically every person MC meets, gets his own backstory explained at some point. That gets really tiring and boring and is the reason why it starts to feel like unnecessary filler.

Although MC is this super strong Abyss, he is doing nothing throughout the whole novel. He shines in the end for, like one chapter, but all in all it's just hanging around, beeing a Mascot. Eating, drinking, dating, listening to stories and solving sudoku.

About the ending... you can call it a happy ending but I'm not exactly satisfied with it. I feel like the whole story had other possibilities, especially with the Abyss setting.

So, the story has some plot and logic holes but the writing itself was good. The translation is also rather good.

I recommend to read it once... don't think it's readable twice. <<less

This is the novel that got me to make an account here just so I could post a review, so you know it's good. I'm not even done reading it, but it caught me so off-guard that I couldn't wait until then to rave about it, PLUS the chapter I'm currently on at the time of writing this (57) is really important and although the end is a bit of a cliffhanger I can kind of guess what's going to happen next and AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH is about what I'm feeling right... more>> now. Edit: nevermind, I couldn't guess it lol, but no regrets!

I really went into this expecting a cute, fluffy novel with some hidden identity misunderstandings/comedy to spice it up a bit, but the author grabbed me by the throat and went "YOU THINK THAT'S MY FINAL FORM, b*tch?!" and proceeded to write a story about the philosophies of life, love, and war, what it means to be human, the struggles of and between being an individual and being part of a greater whole, and yes, with cuteness and fluff also included.

I love both main characters, Shi Yuan with his pure-heartedness and optimism (and not the annoying kind, but the 'I'm not even human so yeah I come off as simple, but also a guy's head could explode right in front of me and I wouldn't even blink' kind) and Lu Tinghan with his devotion and gentleness (and I honestly think that one of the most appealing parts of him is that Shi Yuan isn't his whole world, and he doesn't want to become Shi Yuan's whole world either. Yanderes and domineering CEOs all wish they had half the sense of security of this guy). These aren't just the same tropy characters that you could find in a hundred other novels; they really feel like their own people, and not just when they're around each other. The strongest point of this novel is definitely how lived in this world feels. Every random person you meet here has their own story, regardless of whether you get to know it or not, and the apocalyptic setting just adds an extra special weight to every encounter and action, since you know these characters don't have all the time in the world to double thinking or regret what they've done. They could very well be dead the next day, after all. The author certainly isn't afraid to make consequences real and lasting.

I might come back and give more of my thoughts after I've finished the novel, but for now I'll just say that I'm very much looking forward to what comes after this chapter. I wasn't even sure if it would happen or not because with Lu Tinghan's personality it isn't a definite matter and I trusted the author to not just spoon feed it to us because they thought readers would like it, unless it made sense within the story. So yeah, just read the novel, dammit! <<less

It's a light simple story. Not sure why so many were entranced by the descriptions, they were all basic.

The summary is misleading as well. Suffix it to say it was not how the story went. Him being the abyss was secret for a long time and he certainly did no knocking.

Nor did he leave to find Lu the next day. He waited for a long time.

Really that summary was all wrong.

This novel is set in the post-apocalyptic sense where a sudden phenomena, called an 'Abyss', comes to earth and begins to infect living creatures that threaten the survival of humanity. We get to read and know the progress of mankind as how they will protect themselves in this desperate times of hopelessness and continue their legacy. My first impressions of this book was that it was gonna be very melancholic and tragic, giving off despairing themes.

Actually in the summary, although it gives off the impression that Lu Tinghan, the abyss... more>> watcher is going to be the main character, it is actually the cute little devil that will narrate his point of view of the story for us. I really especially adore the both of them.
The main character, Shi Yuan, is a naive and pure monster who sets on an adventure to find his abyss watcher, his human. Throughout the story, so many moments and scenes highlights his compassion and kindness to others even though he is not familiar with 'human' feelings. He also cares and worries for his fellow monsters, contradictory to the hostility humans show them. I love his unironically comedic remarks that make you laugh scattered in the story.

The male lead, Lu Tinghan, is such a breath of fresh air, not only as a character but also as a love interest. He is the humanity's most strongest general and person, he strives to defeat the monsters in battle since he is the 'hope' that everyone has put their trust in. He is very affectionate and loving, giving the readers sweet moments between him and Shi Yuan. He is rational and logical, and very much reassuring as a character because every time he is in a scene, you just cannot help but relax and be assured that everything is going to be okay. But what I love most about his character is that unlike the usual male leads we see, he is not obsessive, he is not selfish, he is not hateful, and he is not abusing his power to do unethical actions. In fact, he is the opposite. He has his own goals, his own ideals, and his own beliefs that he sticks firm to and does not always change it. His world does not revolve around Shi Yuan, and he also does not want Shi Yuan's world to revolve around him. He does not value Shi Yuan over saving humanity, or does he value humanity over Shi Yuan. He puts them in the same level of importance, and as a general of mankind, that's already unlike him. They both have their own world, which just happens that each other's presence and influence is just as big as their own goals.

The major side characters were also individualistic in their own way. They felt real and meaningful, they were given adequate backstories and personalities that did not felt glossed over or the result of half-baked writing. You can really feel their deep emotion, intentions, and actions.

The author's writing style is very poetic, it includes a lot of metaphors and meaningful descriptions that need to be understood and comprehended to realize its true beauty. I have noticed that the author either tends to shorten their writing on details that need to be delved, and also unnecessarily lengthen paragraphs that can just be shortened. But all in all, I still like their way of writing.

This novel also includes a lot of themes and messages, but one aspect that really stood out to me that the novel tried to convey is Humanity. Simply, just everything that goes on in human life. How they meet others, form bonds, part ways, progressed and survived through the tide of monsters, the way they all retained their hope in the belief that mankind can still push through and survive, and so many more. Another aspect that I've understood is Nostalgia, throughout the novel, there are so many bouts of yearning and lingering that it makes your body ache. The main character meets many new people and places, yet at the end of the day, they all have their own lives to tend to and cannot be connected forever like how fairytales convey them. This author really did well on the theme of melancholic nostalgia.

I have felt many emotions when reading this, all forms of happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, disgust, pity, and other types show how well-wrote this is and can have many emotional impacts towards you depending on how well you relate to the characters or circumstances.

The world-building is also quite good. We do not explore and see much though as the setting of the book is quite limited due to how humans cannot go out due to the monsters, and many territories and cities have been destroyed by them.

The strengths of the novel are definitely obvious. But now here are the complaints that I have. When I first started this book, I definitely had high hopes for the main character and his identity, as how was he gonna use his power, how will he affect situations, and etc. But I am quite disappointed to find out that all throughout the story, Shi Yuan was quite powerless and did not do much that progressed the storyline. This is why I believe that the "Protagonist strong from the start" should be removed, as it is quite misleading. His powers and identity definitely had potential, yet I feel that the author quite messed up on this part. But I guess that's also the whole point, Shi Yuan was one of the monsters at the end of the day, he was part of the species and kind that the humans were suffering from. He couldn't intervene in their matters, since he never had the right to do so anyway. I vaguely understood that the author wanted to paint Shi Yuan as an 'observer' to humanity, witnessing their struggles, their their hardships, and their journey, so all I can say honestly is Bravo, author. Another one is that the story felt too mundane and easy-going, there are some intense moments, but the initial expectations I had of action was greatly.. Shattered, and that left me disappointed. I remember being frustrated that the pacing of the story felt too slow and relaxing. But in time, as I read more and more chapters, I really learned to love the pacing of the book and the circumstances that carried with it. The one below is a criticism I have that contains MAJOR spoilers:

Spoiler

I really dislike how the author handled the Empire storyline. We had so much development with the "Echo" project that produced so many scenarios that would have made the story nice. Yet, when they actually arrived at Elton, everyone was already dead? So what was the point, really? I still am so conflicted about this matter. Even though we met the mole people, but it still felt lacking.

[collapse]

Overall though, I still really adore and love this novel to the core. I love the characters, the plot, the themes and messages, and its ending. 95% recommended! <<less

I'm so glad I decided to read this book. Looking at the summary, I was so confused about what the story would be on. I was afraid it was going to be a super serious philosophical story with little romance. But I saw someone mention it slightly resembled Little Mushroom and suddenly I got interested.

If anything, I think this book is even better than Little Mushroom because of the humor and side characters that survive. Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I remember a Little Mushroom being very harrowing. This story, however,... more>> has little doses of funny thrown into the mix. The abyss is wonderfully naive and does so many funny things. And it really feels like I, as the reader, am discovering the beauty and loveliness of people, humanity, and home as the little abyss is.

I love how the abyss gets a job at the theatre as an actor (primarily for his face). What better place to discovery the joys and sorrow of living? What better representation of the ephemeral quality of human success than to try putting on an inspiring play amidst the chaos of war? No, theatre and arts are not necessities to survival, but the hope and inspiration and lessons they provide are essential to living.

One thing this book says so well is how we should try listening to others' stories. Witnessing and emphasizing with what has happened to others helps us appreciate the richness of life. And we might even find key commonalities among our enemies' stories. For example - missing home, wanting companionship, wanting someone who understands.

I think the other great part of this story, and others like it, are how brave people are in the face of what seem like impossible odd. How do people get themselves to continue living and fighting when there seems no end on sight? How do they push past the disappointment of realizing their hopes are futile in order to create new hopes? I think we need stories like this to push us to see what is possible when we don't give up. <<less

I was expecting something comedic and light with the summary but man, it gives me the same feels of watching bright-colored magnificently illustrated anime with depressing as hell settings

Not that this was depressing. It's that the world pulls you in along with the MC, and it's so friggin compelling. I loved this. Awesome writing and fantastic translations.

Edit after completing: beautiful story I don't think I'll be rereading

Love in a desolate landscape, which pretty much tells you how it ends. Constant theme of death, birth, tragedy and hope. Loved it. Worth... more>> it to read at least once. <<less

Contrary to the summary, the theme of the story is actually sad because there's a war going on

But! The happenings between MC and ML aren't really sad, just what's happening around them (like some friends dying, comrades dying etc)

So if you keep in mind that they're in a war and it's normal that tragedies happens, you're all good.

What makes me like this story is how — a lot of times, the situation is very serious but the author will find a way to put some jokes here and there... more>> between the characters so it's funny. I like it a lot and I found myself laughing a lot.

The MC found the ML within the first 5 chapters I think but it was a long long long time later before he admitted who he is.

You might think that —- isn't ML too unguarded when he kept MC by his side right there and then when he didn't know him??! Me too! I felt that it was unreasonable and thought it was MC's protagonist's halo that made ML accept him right away

But no! It's actually explained later why (tho the explanation is only glimpse)
Spoiler

MC's suspicious for everybody because he suddenly came out of nowhere (although his tests show that he isn't infected or anything) and that's exactly why ML kept him by his side, because he has good instincts and if anything happens, he can deal with it.

Plus, ML saw that MC has the necklace of his previous commander so he must have thought that MC isn't bad if the commander actually gave his necklace to MC

Another point is, ML said that he was supposed to let MC go off on his own after he git a job but ML said he made excuses for himself (like MC won't be able to eat delicious foods anymore if he's alone cause his salary is only 5 yuan, like the theater is close to ML's home anyway) stuff like that and I feel like ML was lonely too after all these years of being alone. He might not say or know it but he feels at home with MC

Another point is he really feels nostalgic seeing MC which will be explained later on why

[collapse]

One of the ongoing jokes in the novel that has made me laugh numerous times is —- MC's name is Abyss Number 0. He actually blurted out to one of his friends that he is '0'.

His friend was shocked because he thought MC was admitting that he is a bottom 😂 and there was MC's misunderstanding about what a 1 is. He thought 1 means powerful person so he always tells people that ML is a 1 or that he already has a 1 🤣

MC's innocence plus his little knowledge of the human world is what makes him so lovable and funny.

This is worth reading! Although it is quite long and I agree with the other review that said that there's a lot of unnecessary fillers. Like it took 60+ chaps before MC confessed who he is.

But regardless of that, it's a good novel, the MC is so lovable and ML does feel like every other ML in the beginning but as the story goes on, he fleshes out. You'll see his character more and I love how he goes from a kind, polite ML to a still polite but always teases and jokes around with MC kind of ML

One interaction I love is when MC
Spoiler

was telling his friend that when he dies, he will make his gravestone into an advertis**ent spot. He'll charge 300 yuan.

His friend was shocked and asked what ML thought when he told him

MC said that ML felt that it was too expensive, ML said he'll only charge 200 yuan when he buries MC 😂

So the story starts with MC already traveling towards the city to find ml. There are few comedic undertone. Like MC being named abyss no. 0 and then whispers away like "so I'm 0."

This is so so sooo beautiful and poignant.

We're watching humanity from Shi Yuan's pov, an innocent and kind-hearted monster, and he made it seem like we're a good and kind-hearted race.

In hindsight, it's because Lu Tinghan protected him very well, that he's not able to see the worst of things humans could do. Although he heard stories, and so did we, he didn't get to experience a lot bad stuff and was able to keep his innocence.

This may be boring for some, because it's a slice of life in the... more>> apocalypse. I'm glad that this highlighted the behind the scenes of the common people during war, famine or monster attacks, because not everyone's a hero.

There are some parts though that I wanted to drop this novel, because it's too depressing, because reality is they're still living in the apocalypse, but I'm glad I held unto it til the end.

It's a happy ending for the world, that's all I'm gonna say. <<less

I walked into this novel expecting a light read (and forgot to check the reviewers comments!). I devoured it within a week and cried for the whole last 20 chapters.

There's a permeating sense of despair and hope throughout the entire story. Sometimes the despair feels so oppressive but seeing the world through Shi Yuan's eyes made it feel hopeful, and every interaction meaningful.

This story is truly about love and humanity. I hope other people also get to enjoy this story.

I'm not quite sure how to explain but this novel felt like a "even if everything seems hopeless, there will always be a small strand of hope somewhere". It was tragic and devastating. Yet, it was equally as beautiful. I cried, but I also smiled and laughed. 5/5 ⭐️!! Highly recommended if you're looking for a well written novel with a good plot. Our MC

To be honest, it did feel a little hopeless at some point. Like I couldn't see any way for them to survive this apocalypse. But I'm... more>> glad it was a happy ending, in a way. I got scammed actually.

Spoiler

It's been awhile since I finished reading this novel. I couldn't write a review for it because I felt too emotionally drained hahaha. It wasn't as bad as it sounds cause I swear the novel is really worth it. The bad part was because our ML Lu Tinghan DIEDDD. He died and left our lil abyss all alone at the bottom at the other abyss. To say I was devastated was an understatement because I cried like a baby. When they had to go into the abyss and had the chance to bring hope in this apocalyptic world, I thought there was hope for them to survive. It felt like a gush of fresh air after breathing in smoke all these while. I HAD HOPE! BUT WHEN THE ML DIED I WAS SHOOKED!!! It felt like the little hope I had left got shattered. So sad and so depressed. All I thought about was WHYYYYYYYY??? They were this close. Why did they have to die 😭 What will happen to my dear abyss. He's left all alone by LTH. He has no one left... 🥲 Hais but anyways it's still a happy ending so just read on and you might feel a little better. Mainly cause I was already heartbroken when he first died so even though after that they got their happy end, I still couldn't forget that part of the novel.

Our MC, little abyss no. 0, Shi Yuan, is such a sweetheart 🥹 he's like a blank sheet of paper. Whereas our ML, Lu Tinghan is person that resembles a mountain, big, strong, and reliable. Although he did not fall in love with SY at the start, I can say that he really loves SY with all his heart. Throughout the novel, I got to see how their relationship progress and it was extremely beautiful. The love from our MC was so pure and strong that sometimes even I want him to restrain him from giving so much of himself. 🥲 <<less

Originally, I was looking for a post apocalyptic novel that had just the amount of fluff and a lot of quirky power stuff with zombies and monsters and a lot of face slapping..... This novel made me realize what I was looking for. Though synopsis might be misleading but trust me it's not a lie, it just takes time to build up.

The story starts with a clueless, easy to fool MC and a very strong and powerful ML. It may start light hearted with a few comedic tones and by... more>> comedic I mean you're crying in grief then the MC suddenly cracks something s*upid and then you laugh but this story really shows you not only the story of the MC and ML and how they fall in love, it's so much more than that.

You will meet people, hear their tragic stories, read a lot of deaths, sacrifices. This story is very human in a monster's POV and trust me, this is the book you never knew you really needed.

One of my faves. <<less

Reading this novel feels like, I am standing in a garden admiring each flowers on a cold but full moon night. Witnessing their withering, blooming and budding that is bittersweet with humor.

This is kind of a journal describing the journey of a kind non human boy.
I like the writing of the author. The writing style of the author can bring out humorous among bitterness, showing the hue of sadness inside the happy moments as well as gentleness upon the ruin.

I recommend this novel to those who love - soft... more>> and babyish ML, slowly building up story, some tragedies and stories of other characters included. <<less

If you are looking for a nice, calm, comedic, slice-of-life novel then step away. This novel will make you feel emotions. You will laugh and you will cry. The author does not pull any punches.

This novel is actually not overly dramatic or full of action. But it is very real. And that's what hits so hard. It explores emotions and relationships and death. And it's written in such a nice, calm pace, that there are scenes that are heartbreaking.

Don't be fooled by the "protagonist strong from the start" tag. Although... more>> he is technically strong, he is actually pretty useless. Everything is out of his hands and his "strength" (if you call it that) is actually humans worst nightmare.

The naive protagonist tag is very accurate. The protagonist isn't s*upid. It's his first time with humans, so he just doesn't understand things. It's completely believable and not annoying or frustrating.

I would also like to compliment the author for their foreshadowing. Very skillfully written!

The translator also did a great job!

There are a lot more words I can say about this novel, but it truly is a wonderful, emotional journey. <<less
