Honoo no Mirage (Mirage of Blaze) is a complexly-plotted novel which incorporates a large number of elements, including romantic melodrama, historical politics and supernatural fantasy. Japanese history predominates the heavily structured story-line, which mainly involves the continued aggression between power-wielding guardians (‘possessors’), and the denizens of a ‘feudal underworld’- a group of restless souls belonging to long-dead samurai from the warring states period who are attempting to re-ignite those age-old wars in present-day Japan.

Along with Ai No Kusabi, Mirage of Blaze is one of the classic BL light novels. Propped up as more of an actual novel than your average yaoi, it’s quite easy to enter the series with high expectations, only for it to fall short. Like proper novels, the series is quite slow and it takes a while for the romance to develop. The MC is the reincarnated Kagetora who first appears as Takaya Ougi. He’s your standard high schooler, with higher morals and talent and is overwhelmed with the new world he’s drawn into. While simultaneously has to dodge an intense, burning passion from the only person who can guide and protect him (Nobutsuna Naoe/Yoshiaki Tachibana). While their relationship is somewhat at a standstill due to the MC’s confusion, Naoe’s guilt, their past and the fact that they’ve kept this up for several incarnation cycles with nowhere to escape.

If you take your time and enter with lower expectations, the story is pretty good for a light novel and contains a decent mix of fantasy and yaoi with an archaic flavour. Although it does slot into a niche genre, as most people who read stories for plot will just for standard shounen series, while those looking for yaoi would be fine with a one shot.

Other Notes:

Since the MCs can die and reincarnate into new bodies, they tend to disappear for a few books at a time. Their new selves also take some getting used to.

The author’s view of passionate romances also goes beyond intense and into suffocating and warped – but historically it’s not too out there. It’s also part of the plot.

Overall it fits well into a 6-7/10 rating, but as far as long running yaoi series go, it’s still one of the better and more developed ones.

It's difficult to describe in words..

I really love the depth of Naoe's and Takaya/Kagetora's feelings toward each other, the complication, the angst, the mess. So full of emotion that I'm about to burst.

Totally recommended!

I remember when I watched the anime first and it was just 2 seasons (maybe some early volumes) and I got so attached to their story. You won't believe I searched everywhere for the English translation.

I spent my entire week to complete read that novel, day and night. Was it worth? Yup f*ck yeah!!!

Kagetora and Naoe. This two literally played with my head for in entire novel/ manga.

People would have hated Naoe at start because he r*ped the body of person who Kagetora cherished. Well the blame was in Kagetora thou. Kagetora always knew what could happen and he himself drive Naoe to that end. People will say that he Naoe r*ped that body. But in Naoe's mind it was just vessel for Kagetora he was loving.

Then Kagetora has to erase his memory and make Naoe's life even more hell which was already rotting to the core.

Kagetora also has his share of problems/ conflicts or emotions but damn this CP was f*cked me lot.

Such a traumatic, f*cked up and full of misunderstanding it was package of all of this and more. Rn I'm not able to convey those emotions which I felt at that time when I finished reading it but still there are still some small emotions weathering.

Sorry for all the curse words but seriously this story had that impact on me. It literally blew my mind. Definitely worth a read but you need to emotionally invest a lot and try to put yourself in their shoes. And not just say that he could have done that or this could be different. And just try to understand and feel the story. <<less
