Cassia Ruberno, Countess of the Simone Empire, marries Zester Greze, a commoner war hero, at the order of emperor.

After living for 10 years with no love or money, he dies of incurable disease. No, I only thought that he was dead.
At the same time as his death, Cassia returns to the first day she met him, 10 years ago.

However, I don’t want to repeat the same life as before, so I declared a “strike.”

Cassia, who was blunt and knew nothing but war, was determined to live on her own without being discouraged.

Strangely, Zester in this life continues to try to get into Cassia’s heart.

Cassia, who didn’t hate Zester’s efforts and changes at the same time, said, “I think that maybe I can manage change it in this life.”

*NOTE: I read the machine translations of all 202 chapters, so I may not have understood everything that happened.

PLOT: The story center is around the romance and lives of Zester, a newly appointed Baron and Cassia, his wife, who were forced into an arranged marriage by the emperor of the Simon Empire. Zester, and Kasia had been husband and wife in a different timeline from the one that the main story takes place in. In this timeline, they had a pretty strained relationship due to a set of misunderstandings that... more>> compound is on each other, which never got better till the day Cassia died due to an illness. However, after Cassia dies of an illness, she is brought back about 10 years in the past. While she doesn't want to live with her husband, she also doesn't want to forget about the children that she had with Zester, so she decides to stay with him, at least until she has her children. Initially, it seems like there isn't an overarching plot, but as time goes on, and the story continues, you realize that there is a main antagonist for the story.

Spoiler

The main antagonist is the god of the Simon Empire, Orobas. Orobas is essentially the devil in disguise and is trying to take over this world. The general lore of the story is that there are multiple worlds which are delegated to angels by the main God, and sometimes devils try to take over a world that is handed over to an inexperienced angel, like the world in the story that takes place.

[collapse]

The latter half of the story focuses in on this main antagonist, but for the most part, the emphasis on the story is the relationship between Zester and Cassia, who slowly, overtime, build a longing and understanding of each other as husband and wife, which they couldn't do in their previous life.

There are some elements of time travel and magic embedded within the story as well. The level of magic within the world building is fairly low. However, if you pray to a God and pay a price, you're capable of having your wish granted to some extent. More on in the criticism section.

CHARACTERS:

    • Zester: He is a commoner turned mercenary that contributed greatly to a war that happened in the Simon Empire, and due to that the emperor tried to give him a high title, but the nobles refused to acknowledge that person, so he was given a title of a baron, and given Cassia in an arranged marriage, to sort of compensate for the lack of the title he was given. We later find out
      Spoiler

that Count Axios, the person Zester served under during the war, pushed for Zester to be given a title, since he could control Zester. Furthermore, the emperor only gave Zester Cassia, a daughter of a powerful and wealthy Count, because he had promised to marry her off to someone in the North, specifically Count Axios, but he refused, so as not to tarnish his reputation, he forced her onto the Zester.

      [collapse]
Zester has a deep inferiority complex towards his wife, because of the gap in their origins and their aptitudes in his original life and new timeline life. He was not able to get close to his wife because of that, however, in the new timeline due to a different set of circumstances, he makes certain strides to try to get closer to his wife, and that snowballs into him slowly overtime getting over his inferiority complex and getting closer to Cassia. Zester is a fool for his wife because he has fallen so deeply in love with her.
    • Cassia: She is the daughter of Ruberno, a wealthy aristocrat in the south. She has silver hair and blue eyes, and she is considered the most beautiful person in the empire. She is extremely intelligent and has a knack for politics and speaking and management of territory. Given Cassia's aptitude and beautiful appearance, Zester feels unworthy of Cassia, and this is a source of constant issue within the relationship that they have to slowly work through.
The relationship between Zester, and Cassia is heartwarming and cute. Personally, I would've preferred maybe a little bit more of a strange relationship for a little bit longer, but overall the relationship was pretty pleasant to read about.

There are obviously other characters in the novel, however, I won't really get into them since most of them are not that relevant to the story. There are some relevant characters that I didn't describe however, even their involvement is to some extent limited in nature.

Writing Style: It's okay. I can't say it's great or bad. This could mostly be due to the fact that I was reading machine translations. I don't know if it's the translations or what, but it would've been better if there was a sort of clear delineation in terms of perspective, change shown by some type of demarcation within the text. Also, sometimes it seemed like perspectives were being mixed together fairly quickly I don't know again if that's a factor due to it being machine, translations or simply because the author is mixing perspectives fairly often.

Criticisms of the novel: Overall, while I enjoyed the relationship between Cassia and Zester, what I found to be somewhat lacking, was a sense of tension due to
Spoiler

the fact that multiple wishes were made and granted by God with heavy sacrifices, but all of those prices were sort of reversed. I wasn't expecting a particularly dark novel where there is an enormous price that one has to pay. I expected to some extent that the ending was going to be happy. In fact, I was hoping for a happy ending however, overall the author gets into a tendency of having characters pay a heavy price for a particular wish being granted by God and then, having that price, somehow, in some shape or formed reversed. It's sort of feels unfair that those around Cassia and Zester constantly have their wishes granted, but not anyone else. It's not surprising considering that the main God, Ra, is loves Zester and has come down to the human realm as Cassia without memories (doing this every life Zester is reborn). The novel doesn't really get into the philosophical nature of a God favoring certain existences over other existences. As Zester and Kasia's wishes are constantly granted. You wonder in the background, if you're like me at least, what about the other children who lost their mother? What about the other mother who lost their child? What about the other husbands and wives who had strange relationships because of weird misunderstandings in the beginning of the relationship. Essentially, you wonder these things because the author isn't committed to making his character or readers feel any cost to their actions.

[collapse]

CONCLUSION: Overall, a pretty pleasant read as far as a romance novel goes. Some, perhaps overreliance on some Dues Ex Machina-type situations (see criticism spoilers if you're really interested). <<less
