It was Yan Zhaoge’s first time transmigrated into another world. He landed in a martial warrior civilization that was at the peak of prosperity. He ended up in the Divine Palace’s library, which collected and preserved the classics of the entire world from all fields of knowledge. However, a world-class calamity struck soon after, and even the Divine Palace was destroyed.

Yan Zhaoge’s soul once again transmigrated into another world. The twist was he arrived in the same world, except countless years have passed.

With his brain full of rare books and classics from the era of peak prosperity, Yan Zhaoge’s second transmigration to the present era was like a gamer who was used to playing hell mode suddenly finding himself playing the game on easy mode.

That was just way too awesome.

But before that, he would need to fix a problem.

“I’m not the main character? In fact, I’m actually the main character’s love rival and the antagonistic Mr. Perfect senior brother? This script is wrong!”

I'm ashamed I even read till c150.

Because of the picture & title it's rated so high.

1. Starts off well, then quickly turns into very bad generic xianxia - (pulling out co*ks over nonsensical matters)
2. The fights are lame, using horrid over exemplifications to describe. You eventually have no real gauge.
3. The MC constantly finds an opponent just one step above his own every other chapter.... really?
4. The authors rambles on-and-on-and-on about the politics of this world. - Like we care, Move the plot!!

This is quite a different story. Although the comedy may hook you at first, you will continue reading for it's wits. The first part of the first arc is all about the comedy and turning the genre on it's head, while the rest of the novel is less funny, but plot-wise proves to be way superior than many, many other novels of the genre. Few can claim to be as well written or planned as this one, at least so far. The execution is great too. It does have a... more>> few pacing issues and some cliches, but they are all used in a refreshing or logical manner. So far, the main conflict, it's developments and conclusions are really satisfying, with space for foreshadowing and prep work for bigger plots behind the scenes. I'm seriously enthralled by this story. I recommend anyone to at least give it a try. <<less

I love this story. It starts off as a fun parody of wuxia tropes but later turns into something more serious. The parady bits are incredibly amusing and very satisfying. To witness the MC poke holes at all the illogocal bits of the would-be protagonist and overcome the massive amounts of plot armor protecting woud-be protagonists is so gratifying. Even after the story becomes more serious the parady never disapears. Its still there mocking ridiculouse pet mystic beasts, time travel protagonists, helpful old grandpas, etc.

Some reviewers have complained about the... more>> more serious direction the story takes after the beginning. I love it since its still very different than most wuxia and the parody is still there, just immersed more naturally into the story. Its like a villainous reincarnation story. Our MCs body was originally some villainous playboy meant to instigate the hot blooded protagonist into advancing to OP-ness but do to being taken over by our fav MC, he is now dodging destruction flags (protagonists of all tropes) and steadily climbing to the top. Best part is he never truly acts like a classic wuxia hero who must overcome all with stubbornness and pride. Although, he is OP like one but how he goes about it is different. MC uses his much stronger servant to fight stronger opponents, faceless minions for small fry, shamelessly asks for help when over his head. And all the while making these normally 'cowardly' actions seem like the normal, intelligent actions they actualy are. MC is OP but he's realistic, and the story uses our very real MC to point out just how silly most wuxia standards really are. Love this story <<less

It was an interesting take to see the MC starting the story as someone who would fill the role of the antagonist in another novel. It was moreso very refreshing to read about characters who would typically be MC in other novels have their actions accounted for in a more neutral setting, and seeing the darker side of their personalities. Would recommend this novel to those who have read a lot of the typical cultivation novels and would like to read something a bit different.

This is definitely one of the best Xianxia novels out there. I've been hearing about it for a while but only started reading it recently. The writing is that of top three of all writers out there, but that could also be attributed to an excellent translation teams out there. The problem though, and I'm writing this review to bring more attention to this novel, is that it has changed translation teams twice! So a total three teams, three websites, but I don't know why?!! It is so good. Not... more>> just good, the writing and how things progress is excellent. Yes the protagonist gets his way but in general the events progress in a natural way. The protagonist is smart and scheming and his schemes, while come out of nowhere, are good. But best of all the side characters are fleshed out, compared to other Xianxia novels at least. The romance is good and not too much. And as you get further into the story, the balance of the world is skewed against him, there are many factions fighting each other and not just the good guys on one side against bad guys on the other, but a complex geopolitical structure. The cultivation is also smart and makes sense as far as cultivation goes at least. I highly recommend. <<less

If you read enough chapter than you will realize that this is not your usual MC almost dying than lucky encounter (harem?) than suddenly became op with the s*upid antagonist beaten. Later you will realize not everything is black and white with smart enemy and a romance that make sense. Btw I hate reading a novel with the MC losing. But the thing I hate the most is s*upid enemy and s*upid harem.

not enuff comedy, that's all. When a writer sets out to poke fun at a genre, he needs to know when to stop. Now, at this point in my reading, it's already stopped with the 'being the antagonist' and he's a full blown protag without any junior martial siblings.

If you like having a protagonist who is always on top of the situation, like say Grandmaster Strategist or Dungeon Defense, then you may enjoy this one as well. The main difference is that he is also absurdly powerful on top of having plans upon plans for every possible challenge. There is never any doubt who will come out ahead - you are merely reading this for the satisfaction of watching big brother Yan drive his (increasingly powerful) opponents into despair after perhaps giving them a bit of hope.

I wouldn't... more>> recommend this to anyone new to Xianxias. It is at its heart a parody, so you can expect it to poke fun at common tropes. By the middle point of the story, however, it becomes a bit more of a straightforward Xianxia novel and the rival "fake MCs" more or less stop appearing.

Pros:

1. MC is the "likes to act cool" arrogant type, not the "mu*der everyone because they looked at me wrong" arrogant. He is the quintessiantial senior brother type.

2. MC has a strong attachment to his clan and is 100% loyal to friends and family.

3. Very enjoyable romance, one of the best in this genre (though a bit slow to start). The heroine is a three dimensional character with a good personality, and her interactions with the MC are natural, heartwarming, and funny.

4. Plot armor, while in HUGE abundance as expected, is well explained. The treasures our MC acquires often end up playing a larger role later in the story.

Cons:

1. The early arcs drag on for too long, IMO. I'll attribute this to the author still finding his rhythm.

2. "Downtime" is very rare. Troubles seem to be never ending, so you can't help but feel sorry for our exhausted Yan Zhaoge. This may be a pro for some readers though who don't like peaceful interludes.

Overall I'd say that this is a very fun read. It's not for everyone, but definitely worth checking out. <<less

Irregardless of this novels plot armor and characters and what not, since different people have different taste. The most glaring problem with this novel is how messy and convoluted the story is.

Even before I read c100, i've already long forgotten any of the characters other than the MC Yan Zhaoge. The number of unnecessary characters and events are too much to count and happens in quick succession. The pacing of the novel can be considered quick and some may like that, however there were no memorable scenes or characters. The... more>> Author throws various characters and conflicts together as if he were making an ABC soup. The writing style further makes it hard to keep track and understand what is going on properly.

I've read novels like ATG, emperor's dominion to ISSTH. Despite all these novels short comings may have, none beats the mess and unnecessary complicated story telling this novel offers. This is novel isn't slow or boring, just way too messy. <<less

HSSB is funny because it makes fun of the usual xianxias and even the MC does so, however apart from that the storyline is basically the same as in the others xianxias (same development => how characters treat (and underestimate) the MC, how MC lvl-up,...). There is a lot of filler (1/2/3 paragraphs of nothing) but while it may be annoying, it still has some use as these fillers allow you to remember the characters involved (almost every side-characters are introduced each time they are talking/do something).

My review may seem... more>> negative but I still rated HSSB 4 because it was overhaul that funny :) <<less

The main 'stunt'/fad of this story is that MC is being forced into the role of 'Senior Brother', and is forced to deal with the MC's of a typical Xianxia novel. In Reality, there is not much difference between Yan Zhaoge and MCs of Low Quality Xianxia Novels (like Emperor's Domination/ATG/BTTH). Yan Zhaoge wins all the time. He is above everyone else, be it cultivation, historical knowledge, knowledge of formations, alchemy, plotting etc. Which means he is actually a standard MC.

Spoiler

The Good:

Writing is good, at least initially.

Opponents of MC are not ret*rded. They know when to attack and when to run.

Initially MC is not crazy overpowered & doesn't go on mu*derous rampages, killing everyone in sight.

The Bad:

Writing becomes repetitive, half of the time it is Yan Zhaoge giving sermons and explaining things.

Yan Zhaoge NEVER suffers a setback. He ALWAYS wins at ALL TIMES in ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. He knows everything, all plots, all formations, all alchemy, all history. This makes it boring, and very similar to a standard Xianxia novel. But then, if I wanted to read crap like Battle Against The Heavens or Emperor's Domination, why would I come here?

[collapse]

Recommendation:

If you are reading crap like BTTH/ATG/Renegade Immortal/Emperor's Domination etc, you can switch to History's Strongest Senior Brother, at least it is better written.

If you want to read only the BEST Novels, then Read: Deathsutra, ISSTH, A Will Eternal, Ze Tian Ji, Pivot of the Sky. <<less

OMG!!!! I love the author! He really knows what are hated and copy-pasted in cultivation type of novels and he pointed those out. I like the MC's temperament and wits. For me, he is the real genius of the cultivation world. I hope there will be more releases.

History's Number 1 Founder is refreshing since it has a trickster trying to fulfill a support role and allow his 'protagonist' disciples fulfill their template story. It shows how much work it would be to manipulate things so they end up so conveniently- basically, it shows how hard a job it is to be someone else's plot armor and deus ex machina.

History's Strongest Senior Brother takes a different approach. The protagonist is in a set of circumstances that completely fulfills the 'arrogant young master' archetype... and he realizes that... more>> he is being set up to be a midboss that gets killed on the protagonist's sect destroying story arc. Recognizing his position... the protagonist is trying everything in his power to avoid fulfilling his role in the story. So he uses his cheat like store of knowledge and understanding of archetypes in order to gain actual power (instead of faking it like in founder) and to try to talk his way out of getting into fights with the 'hero'.

While #1 Founder is about weaseling your way into fulfilling a destiny that you are in no way qualified for, Strongest Senior Brother is about weaseling your way out of a destiny that everyone is trying to set you up for. Both wonderfully play with the tropes of this genre, either trying to find ways to activate them or avoid them. If you have grown sick of other works in the genre, I highly recommend these two series. I cannot guarantee that they do not eventually 'become the the exact thing you are making fun of', but I can guarantee that they at least give you a good laugh as they enter into their premises. <<less

Just based on the fact that this novel does not have a harem despite there being a powerful male protagonist who has all the advantages of life, I'm giving it five stars.

The story itself is actually pretty epic though.

A perfect xianxia novel for those of us who abhor harems with a passion but still want dashes of romance.

A case of the story going on too long.

Me and my friend were interested in this for the parody aspect. The parody aspect goes away very quickly, and it turns into a Mr. Perfect Xianxia story for the rest of it I guess. I do think it's written better than your average Xianxia. Some original ideas, events, and world building, but it's really strayed from its original idea.

Also when they get too perfect, it just starts to feel dull. When the enemies never manage to get any damage on the... more>> protagonist, or even there family, there's just no tension. Just like with Sage Monarch. <<less

A must read if you like deep world-building, intricate plots and great battles. Side characters are developed alongside the protagonist, foreshadowing is done in an amazing way. You can clearly see the author did not just write randomly. The protagonist is badass as well.

Reviewers that say there is a lot of filler shouldn't read this kind of novel where details are expounded upon and every manual, fighting method and dao are connected closely with one's lineage.

Someone said you can "skip" fights and not miss anything but I disagree. Each technique... more>> brings life to the world and Ive never seen so much variation in battle prowess, it's as if real techniques have been used. Its a pleasure to read about the fights. <<less

Great concept, sadly, it falls for every flawed trope in the genre. I think he originally wanted to mock those tropes but in the end he settles comfortably into them. I have gotten to the point where every time a new enemy shows up to extend an arc even further, I just want to skip to the conclusion. The plot gets bogged down in repetitions of things already mentioned. I really don't care what everyone else thinks, especially after hearing one person say it, it would be fine to leave... more>> out the next 20 people repeating the same thing. I want to enjoy this story, but I feel like it is reminding me of why I don't read the genre anymore. <<less

The story isn't bad itself, the concept is good, the world building, as well as the pace. Though cliche the support characters aren't bad. Its just that the title is wrong, instead it should be "History’s Strongest Info Dumping", unbelievable amount of info dumping, it must be that my life is sad that I had to read this novel so far.

The author loves to waste words on descriptions of attacks and such (as in, multiple paragraphs for a single attack) so be prepared to skim through, but I guess this is already expected for cultivation novels. The exposition can also get boring at times but I feel it can be worth it some of the time.

The novel starts strong with a MC in the shoes of a would be villain and there's other characters with MC-like characteristics and there's a "Deathmatch between MCs" kinda feeling which is quite interesting, it... more>> also subverts a few tropes, but don't expect the author to be super original (he's not). Later on the novel gets a little dull, all the author does is raise the stakes endlessly and it stops feeling like threats matter and I just continue reading because of anticipation of the next big thing, whether it's a fight, a power up, a interesting strategy or whatever. The *BIG PROBLEM* is how the author never makes the pay off satisfying, it's almost always underwhelming. Spoiler-free example:
-author: If MC defeats that guy he will be able to get the PRIME HEAVENLY DIVINE CLEAR JADE DRAGON PEERLESS FIRE AND ICE WORLD KILLER SWORD
-me: HECK YEAH GET THAT SWORD!
[MC gets the sword and it turns out it's just a pretty good sword and MC can't use it's world killing powers because his cultivation isn't high enough] EDIT: on volume 9 author mentions someone called Supreme Lord of Divine Sky Jade Clear True King Longevity Emperor Prime Heaven Ruler Sage, I'm not joking but I wish I was.

Worst of all is when I'm all excited for a fight that the author spent pretty much a whole chapter building up hype for, but author keeps interrupting the fight and my excitement with s*upid expositions, explanations and descriptions.

It also has other problems common in cultivation stories like:
1 The fights feel like MMORPG combat, where everyone is pretty much just standing around using skills.
2 The fights start feeling too distant from reality and the human perspective. When every move seems able to destroy the world, world-destroying moves stop feeling special.
3 The cultivation feels extremely generic and unintelligent.
4 MC's enemies are always conveniently at his level.
There's more but I don't care enough to try to remember them, I might keep reading it or drop it.

OH RIGHT!
IT PISSES ME OFF how there's always a new enemy coming up endlessly, the author never gives MC the time to just cultivate and relax (he does, just not enough) and it gives me some goddamn anxiety... <<less
