Disclaimer: I read the Chinese raws and finished the original novel but I haven’t read the translated chapters as of yet.

This is the story of a hapless everyday man who is transported to a world where one can become immortal if they cultivate themselves toward enlightenment but is unable to take his time to do so because unlike with other xian xia protagonists, he has a deadline that he received from an un-refusable quest (complete with supporting reality-breaking system) that requires him to be the founder of the Number #1... more>> school within a year’s time upon pain of death. Thus started Lin Feng’s desperate battle for his own life in the cutthroat world of xian xia as he competes for resources and talent, only surviving based on his own modern knowledge of story cliches (enabling him to find the potential heroes while they’re underdogs before they get their big break), his own skill at bluffing and fast talking, and by taking advantage of the small cheats given to him by the very same quest system that is threatening to take his life upon failure.

Storywise, the establishment of the school is very fun because there is Lin Feng’s internal dialogue constantly providing meta commentary about the situation that is hilarious while he is maintaining a mysteriously wise sage facade on the outside. It’s fun to read about him essentially bluffing himself a reputation of being a super mysterious and powerful sage as everyone fills in the blanks on whatever he does or does not reveal and aggroing himself a ton of rivals and enemies simply because he has to pretend to be more powerful than he really is just to fulfill the quest. So the fights tend to actually matter because they’re high stakes as they occur because Lin Feng’s bluff usually failed and now he has to fight someone who’s double his level in strength and he has to use all of the advantages he has on his side– the game-breaking abilities/items his quest system provided him via roulette, his quick wits, and plain cheating– just to win.

By the time his strength starts to catch up with the outsized rep he gained from bluffing, the very well-established characters and world help make up for the slight change in tone from individual fights to manipulation of world politics. In the end, Lin Feng constantly having to work frantically behind the scenes just for that moment of coolness helps give a frantic undertone to everything that helps prevent you from not caring about the events and also prevent it from deteriorating into a level grind that is so prevalent in similar xian xia novels.

Yes, there are characters who are essentially ripped off from other popular Chinese cultivation novels but they are more homages due to Lin Feng’s knowledge of meta-tropes of what makes a good protagonist. So the homage characters are only there to provide enough material for Lin Feng’s smart ass self commentary about the events going on. So you get moments like him thinking, “Oh, that’s the eternal rival that will the walking treasury for my disciple to raid. I pity and thank you (to the hapless antagonist who doesn’t have Lin Feng’s knowledge of story archetypes).” Or internally cackling over his disciple's invincibility despite entering into a battle as an underdog because he knows the disciple has plot armor up the wazoo. As the author writes carefully, the early parody qualities of the homage characters quickly become their own, especially since they’re still subordinate in story purpose to Lin Feng as the main protagonist and it’s not necessary to know the original novel the characters were an homage of since their characterization soon changes as it all melds into its own unique blend.

This is a review after finishing the novel.

The MC's goal is to create the most powerful sect ever. This is not his own goal at the start but something pushed on him by his own cheat. This cheat gives him "quests" related to this goal he has to complete with the threat of death.

For exemple: "Recrute X disciples - You have X years, failure to do so will results in host's death"

The begining is very special and different from what we might see in other novels. To start of on... more>> his path to creating the strongest sect in history he will first need his first disciples, for that the MC will look for and recruit "heaven's chosen childs", young people with crazy high stats which are basically the MCs from other novels (BTTH for exemple), before they get their big break and start on their own path in their own novel.

The MC is not aware that those disciple he is trying to recruit have their own novel so there is no 4th wall break. But he is very aware that they are special, that they probably have, what the MC humorously call, a "grandpa" in a ring, bead, etc and that their destiny is about to start. He wants to hijack that destiny so that they'll become great thanks to him.

He qualifies his "job" as being able to replace that "grandpa" before they start helping that future disciple of his.

The begining is very funny. The hilariousness comes from the MCs comments "Is that the famed marriage annulement?" and how he manages to get out of messes by tricking others and using misunderstandings as he is very weak.

As the novel progress the comedy will disapear little by little (never completly gone but it's a lot more discreet) and it starts to become a lot more like a standard Wuxia novel.

Good points :

    • Comedy at the start is great.
    • Sect building is consistant from the begining to the end, the sect building aspect is not pushed aside
    • Big Side characters (his direct disciples) are very developped, some are rascals, some are strict or easy going, cruel and so on. They have their own self created martial arts and personalities. They are very disctinct and they are not "empty puppets".
    • Even small side characters are great ! They will have personalities, goals, ennemies, friends. Eventually the main disciples will have their own disciples and even those smaller side characters will have rivalries between each others, have their own mini arcs, background. They'll fight for the sect and themselves.
    • For once the girls gets a real chance. They get real "screen time", some are tough and fierce and stand on their own.
    • The MC is very protecting of his disciple and very generous. It's a nice change.
    • Seeing the sect develop from a couple of people to hundreds or thousands with their own sect martial arts is very satisfying
    • There are others sects, some friends, neutral, ennemies and we get to see their stances and view points and their own machinations. This means that even if he is on good term with a sect it doesn't mean that they are not looking out for their own benefits.
    • I kept reading up till the end and found the ending fitting.
Bad Points :

    • There is not much tension. The MC will always win in an over the top fashion.
    • The MC is very lucky. This is usual in those novels. But for exemple one of the MC's cheat is a roulette that will give him a random item, the item he will receive will always play a huge role in the near future. He gets exactly what he needs every time, even if he doesn't know it yet.
    • While there is a lot of sect building stuff written, the focus is still heavily on the MC. We do get some quick peeks on Sect tournaments, sects fights, disciples recruitements and so on. But the author should have gone deeper on those aspects. I wanted to read more about how they were being taugh, I wanted more POV chapters on the actual disciples. And so on.
This is a very good novel. I usually end up droping CN novels after a few hundreds chapters because it often gets too repetitive and boring. There is still repetitiveness here, particularly when it's about the MC cultivation and fights (which sadly is the biggest focus of the novel) but the other stuff makes up for it.

I originall ywanted to give it a 4 starts. But since it is better than most other novel I have read lately, I will give it 5. <<less

... I feel sort of bad for breaking up the train of nice reviews. But here's my opinion: the story gets stale.

The beginning is great, but the author seems to lose inspiration and put in less effort after a while. Overall, the novel isn't satisfying as a parody, but it also isn't able to stand alone as an entertaining story if we ignore that purpose.

The spoofing has stalled. It reached its peak a couple dozen chapters in with a wonderful utilization of the Mistaken for Badass trope, and it's been... more>> running on fumes for over fifty chapters since. The protagonist's genre savviness and composed attitude were enjoyable at first, but they've undergone little development. Now they're beating a dead horse, and each chapter's become boring. You know what to expect, and the story sticks to its formula and doesn't exceed those expectations.

Good parodies are insightful and funny, but this one's been missing those sparks for a while. It mostly points out and expands upon conventions, which is commendable in its own way, but it tends not to go the extra half-step of humorously deconstructing or exploiting them or whatever else. Instead of regularly making clever, comical observations, the novel does so a few times, and then recycles them whenever a similar situation pops up. So we don't get to see twenty different witticisms, but four... five times.

On a couple levels, the story jumps on top of what other stories have built without having a solid foundation of its own. It's a problem that the author's other novel seems to share. <<less

Amazing novel; in which the author subverts the general 'MC seen as weak, but really strong' commonly found in xianxia or wuxia novels, and focuses more on the psychology of acting strong and tricking people. I found this read far more entertaining than the majority of currently translated xianxia and wuxia, which just focus on power and generally have repeating elements. Although this novel also takes some of these elements; it admits it and even adds characters from other novels for added comedy and effect. Overall: Genius.

This novel... Yeah, it's fairly good, but it needs more funny moments. I enjoyed it, I'll give it around 4/5. I enjoyed reading it, even if it could get monotone at times and there was a lot of repetitions and unnecessary information. Most of the times, the comedy failed to hit the spot, even if some parts were golden. The starting chapters had a bit more comedy, but even those chapters had some issues, like the MC relying too much on half-arsed luck and schemes to get by (this gets... more>> better after 100-200 chapters). The part about picking up MCs is pretty interesting, especially if you know them from their original novels.

It's definitely worth reading, it has a way to keep you reading without feeling like dropping it despite not being one of the best novels out there. However, I warn you, the translator who took over with qidian around chapter 108 is horrible. The first few dozen chapters were the worst, names and words changed from chapter to chapter until you had no idea what was happening. Even after getting through that phase, names still regularly keep changing even 350+ chapters after that, the translator has no motivation to improve or take feedback at all and refuses to get an editor or/and proofreader to check it and correct all the bad parts.

The translator shamelessly changes the original text and often employs greek mythology, like turning the war god avatar into the avatar of ares, or turning the yellow river into the river of styx, or wind god sect into the aelous sect. The translator even seems to be senile and mixes up genders all the time and definitions can change from one chapter to another to something ridiculous (like a gorge changing to a teapot or a secret treasure trove turning into a secret manual despite a secret manual having nothing to do with anything at all). There's grammar issues everywhere. Words are also used in the wrong way and all too often does the translator use obsolete words (clearly found in a dictionary) that no one knows of and that the translator can't even apply properly or that doesn't work. Something that drove me crazy is that the translator uses "abhijna" as some kind of word (it's used almost every chapter, sometimes several times) without ever even explaining what it means. Searches doesn't bring much of a result either, going by context it seems to sometimes mean cultivation, or knowledge, or spells, or mantras or whatever else, but nothing really fits... The translator also isn't good at making the story flow well, so it's harder to absorb than it should be and I can't read it quickly.

It's hard to explain exactly how annoying it is, you have to read it to understand. I was okay with all the issues with the translation, but after 200+ chapters, I started to get more and more annoyed and after 300+ chapters, I almost started to flip my lid. The translation alone should make me reduce the rating by one star, but I don't feel the novel should get minus points thanks to a bad translation.

So, a good novel, the MC always gets his way and it's well worth the score of 4/5 most of the time. Read it, it's great if you can stand the stuff I mentioned. <<less

How to destroy your own novel 101

The beginning of this story is beautiful, we follow our funny and shameless MC as he tries to accomplish the missions the system forces on him and recruit his disciples while bullshitting through the fights.

This goes on for 200 or so chapters and it's absolutely hilarious, the characters that get introduced are mostly likeable, the faceslapping is fun and the sects for once can see the big picture so we have a somewhat believable political intrigue in the background.

Everything suggests we are in for... more>> something good then... our MC becomes strong enough to actually fight the big guys. Now, the worldbuilding stays intriguing and the disciples are all nice and cool but the story goes downhill from there exceptionally fast, the reason is our boy Lin Feng.

He is an absolute god on earth at this point, he knows everything, he keeps his cool and smiles in your face while he destroys you and your family and thats... boring. There is nothing on stake as no one is a match for him and his sect, the story is not funny anymore and you have 1000 more chapters to read of the same thing written in a different way.

You keep seeing the same things, the fight evolves and instead of throwing kicks and punches the battles involve daoist and buddhist concepts (that can be compelling if done well but this is not the case here), we get drowned in useless exposition and all is good gets overshadowed by the other, less good, stuff.

Not a terrible read overall but you have to really like the trope to enjoy this story until the end. <<less

I'm giving this a 2.5/5. I bumped it up because I'm still reading this novel. My rating will most likely change later on because I'm getting bored reading this novel. It doesn't look like it would get any better.

Pros:

    1. The beginning was quite good. The MC needed to recruit disciples and he has to lie to people that he is strong, along with the game system.
    2. The disciples are well developed and they each have different abilities.
    3. I like seeing the reactions of the MC and disciples kicking ass to other people.
    4. I like that the sects act like real politicians and know when to stand down. This is what I like about this novel; it's like in real life. Characters in the novel think before they react. They won't just go to war because of some genius getting offended or lose in a fight.
    5. No arrogant and idiotic antagonists like other novels.
Cons

  1. My biggest complaint is the way the novel is written or translated. When I read it, it doesn't flow well at all. Maybe its because the names of techniques are mentioned constantly-- it is horrible when their names are 4-5 words long and repeated several times in one chapter. I don't know why, but you will understand if you read this novel.
  2. Impossible to visualize the techniques of characters when they are fighting.... more>> It's the worst novel I have read in this department. I have to skim almost everyone battle because the author likes to drag the fights.
  3. Too many fillers so the author can pad his word count. Info dumps here and there. Overexplanation of techniques when they are fighting or practicing techniques that are either irrelevant to the story or unnecessary.
  4. A little too much characters to remember.
  5. The game system becomes non-existent after he establishes his sect around the 200 chapter mark. All the explanation about the lottery and other mechanics of the system becomes useless to us. His game system just becomes a background for the MC. Its barely mentioned anymore. It comes up every couple hundred chapters so the author can do a deus ex machina for abilities or items.
  6. MC is too overpowered; he never fails. It's too boring when there is nothing at stake.
You definitely have to skim this novel. The battles scenes are really bad, along with the fillers. I'm still reading this novel because I want to see the other sects finally admit that the MC and his sect is number 1. <<less

It has a few funny moments but not enough. MC's disciples are actual MC's from other xianxia's, author introduces these other xianxia characters suddenly and out of nowhere so it is confusing (MC is in the middle of nowhere -Perfect world forest between wolf and stone village, and the author suddenly starts talking about the girl from BTTH and annuled marriage, I wasn't even sure was that the MC talking to them or thinking to himself). There isn't nearly enough focus on teaching the disciples (I haven't gotten to the... more>> sect building yet, but I've read that there isn't enough of that either, and the translator changes for worse). What the focus is on, is MC getting just the treasure/tehnique he needs to defeat hellova lot stronger cultivators than him, ofc he also knows those tehniques instantly without training. So the MC is basically shaming the MC disciples to follow him as a master despite him not being much stronger than them, and overall weak. He sneaks around with them and tries to get 2 sects to fight each other so he profits, suddenly he abandons his disciples to do shady stuff (this happens a lot, and the author doesn't even mention him leaving his disciples). I'm also annoyed that despite this being xianxia, author calls it xuanhuan and the cultivators have mana despite their tehniques being of chi, and instead of golden/revolving core/dan stage, he calls it aurous core... really lame. Oh yeah. the MC pretends to be an old all powerful sage while being super weak and is just relying on treasures falling out of the system to help him in the last second. So in conclusion you get 90% a weakling pretending to be strong and relying on his treasures to fight, and 10% of what you really came for which is teaching the disciples and building a sect. <<less

On this site novels tend to be overwhelmingly liked even if they don't really deserve that score. This is one of those novels I think deserves its rating. Anyone familiar the webcomic Transfer Student Storm Bringer will find a similar feel in this novel. Although unlike the MC of TSSB it isn't all purely luck and misunderstanding this MC has a real wit about him that most xianxia fail to enact. It's also Ironic how much I like this story this considering the stories like BTTH, PW and RI are... more>> stories I couldn't stand BECAUSE of their MCs. The only negative I care to talk about is the lackadaisical nature of the translator. <<less

First of all, you can read wherever you want and should be ok, but the most xianxias you read, the better would the experience be, and if you read the ones that this is is based on, and already know the characters from their original stories, the better would it be because basically, this is a parody xianxia that borrows the main characters of other popular xianxias keeping their backgrounds, their names, etc, and gives them a new future, and a new history under the tutelage of this new original... more>> MC to make the most influential sect on the whole world collecting the main characters of other xianxia and improving them while having to deal with al the problems that are tailing those main characters on their original history.- <<less

Edit: Changing my rating to 3 stars. The translation quality dropped sharply after Qidian took over, and that's in comparison to other novels translated by Qidian. Original: At some point of time, the novel is no longer about Lin Feng being weak and relying on his wits, superior knowledge, magic items, and sheer luck to survive stronger opponents. I suggest you stop reading if you don't like the change in tone because you'll be in for more than a thousand chapters of that. I think I would continue to enjoy... more>> it if it were translated--as opposed to reading the raws--so I am still giving this five stars. Otherwise, it would be four stars as of chapter 215. <<less

Truly annoying when people say "hahah you're just in qi condension brat who got lucky with some artifacts!" but its actually true. Its still chapter 100 and he still hasnt progressed much. At the start of the novel he was straight away qi condension 4 but 1 and 1/2 years later hes only Qi condension 12. He just relys on artifacts to fight. Lin feng even said 'i need to become stronger' but doesnt do shit.

Also at the start of the novel lin feng is a born schemer. The system... more>> makes it unable for people to see his level so he uses that to his advantage and makes himself look like a mighty taoist but lately he always makes mistakes and reveals his level which gets himself mocked etc. Which makes me think that its turning into a average wuxia novel where someone mocks him for being weak, trys to take his heaven defying disciples, lin feng recks them, face slap, person return to his noble family, stronger people come, rinse repeat.

Going to keep reading but just my 2 cents

Edit (chapter 200ish) : OKay changed my mind just going through a phase it gets really good when he starts actually cultivating!

Edit (chapter 500ish) : Getting boring again. Too many 'the sword qi was so strong it felt as if a divine sword was going to cleave apart the world' or 'it made people feel as if the divine emperor was descending on the lowly mortal realm' its cringy as f*ck <<less

Story: A wonderful take on xiaxia/xuanhuan genre. Game elements is kept to a minimum and you have to give credits to the author for his consistency which is rarely found in Chinese novels. There are no bittersweet moments in the story, basically MC gets done whatever he wants to do, albeit not in an over the top fashion.

Characters: MC is levelheaded, clever and like-able and most importantly doesn't get offended easily. There are many conceited characters but no "you offend me, I will kill you" type ones. The author tries... more>> to do justice to the original characters who are the inspiration for the disciples.

World Building: Game elements becomes less important as the story progresses. The cultivation level system is kept consistent. Alchemy and artifact refining skills are not elaborated.

TL;DR

An interesting read if you already acquainted with the genre. The MC is like-able, characters are great and world building is awesome. <<less

I would like to say that this novel is seriously underrated. The MC has a refreshing take and doesn't start out OP (though the system is broken).

I found this novel to be engaging. The author has combined different novels while maintaining his own unique plotline.

However you should not start this as a first pick, be sure to read this only after you've read

Battle through the heavens (chapter 300 at least)

Perfect world (chpt. 100-150 works)

Renegade immortal (chpt. 70 up to)

The early chapters took a bit of time to get used to. They were still entertaining but the fact that the author is using characters, setting and plot from other xianxia novel was jarring. Thankfully, there are little variations. This could be classified as a multiple xianxia crossover novel, but is very well written and has its own charm.

I was just scrolling through the reviews when I noticed a couple of them saying how this is just a ripoff and has no originality.

I would like to firmly deny these "reviews", who have most likely only read the beginning before coming to their conclusion,

because the ripping off is just the author paying homage to the other novels, because once he gathers all his main disciples, the story sets off on its own, unique path.

The story is about Lin Feng, a transmigrated guy accompanied by the System in his... more>> mind which gives him the mission to build the best darn sect there is. Of course, each mission has its time limit, and if not completed within said time limit, he will be killed. And so he recruits his disciples, builds his sect, staving off others who view his sect with greed or as a nuisance to their plan. The world is vast and the world building is amazing. There is politics involved later on, not just raw strength deciding everything. The scheming is amazing but the mildly serious tone is compensated by the hilarious interaction between Lin Feng and his disciples, the growth of their sect from a fledgling toward being a powerhouse with a say in the world, it's all amazing.

Early on in the story, Lin Feng, being at best a couple steps ahead of his MC disciples (with super talent) has to struggle so that the Master isn't overcome by his disciple. He tries his best to not get in too deep of a trouble, only to end up worse with his measly cultivation. But with his quick wits, scheming and hilarious acting, Lin Feng ends up the winner, with a reputation that far surpasses his actual prowess, a glass mirror that may shatter any time. All the side characters have their own personalities, especially his disciples, with their own comprehensions, techniques and sect divisions, with them training their disciples as well. The villains aren't pure 2D idiots, and the hilarity in the novel keeps it chugging forward.

Of course, if you want the MC to be in absolute danger 24x7, I dare not say that this is the novel for you. Lin Feng remains in control for the most part, and for me, that was perfect. <<less

Novel : 10/10
Translator: 7/10
Grammar: 6/10

The story is decent, it does get a bit dull as the chapters keeps stacking. The one thing that has bothered me about this novel more then anything else is the amount of grammar errors, it gets very hard to read and understand from time to time. Although the translator tries his best by himself... you can clearly see the amount of grammar mistakes as you read the story.

It does slightly improve around ch 500.. but not by much.... more>> If he actually had someone editing the story, this would have been one of my top 5 novels to read. The story is still very unique although the MC is very strong at this point in time, the story still keeps moving forward. I recommend anyone who needs something to read in their free time to try this novel. Do keep in mind that the grammar quality isnt the best. <<less

One of the best novel that I've ever read. You gotta hand it to the CN authors when they make comedy or parody novels it's surely an epic novel
