“Are the novel Gods punishing me because I left a bad review?!”

Shen Ziqiao woke up from her deep slumber to find herself transmigrated as the character of an ancient novel. To make matters even worse, she was written by the author to be the moronic daughter of the villain, merely a walking cannon fodder.

Yet it doesn’t end there; she has to strive against a reincarnated female lead’s revenge! And especially against the major death flag in the plot: getting married to the capital’s fool.

But why does she find this fool’s eyes to be too cunning?

Hi everyone, this is the translator!

I'm an ardent reader of historical novels with a transmigrated MC. There's a certain magical allure to it--and this novel is no exception. If you are a fan of Doomed to be a Cannon Fodder or Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, then you should try this novel out which has a similar premise.

I'll tell you my points on why this is a unique take on the genre:

    1. PLOT: Our transmigrated main character (MC), Shen Ziqiao, is fighting against a reincarnated female lead (FL), Sheng Peiyin. Although the novel leans more on the gag side, there is still a serious tone to the story:
      Spoiler

The main conflict of the novel world goes like this, the FL's family is "framed" by our MC's father which leads to their demise. The FL then is reborn to when she was 13 years old and developed her connections for 2 years, of which then our MC transmigrates into the cannon fodder, Shen Ziqiao. Our MC's father is a high-ranking general, whom the FL knows is hard to defeat, therefore she switches her sights on our MC. That's why she becomes the cannon fodder of the story.

      [collapse]
The story mainly revolves on how our MC strives to avoid the death pit laid by the FL, regains authority on her home and discovers there's more to the original plot than it seems...
    1. CHARACTERS: MC: The original Shen Ziqiao was unruly but submissive. When the MC replaced her body, this is where the parody ensures--she's not interested in changing her character to look "good", rather she embraces her cannon fodder title, fighting fire with fire. What I especially love about her character is she's neither the most cunning or calm, in fact, many times she muses how difficult it is to fight against the female lead's halo and cheat LOL she doesn't win all the time, but she strives hard to fight every time. We have the typical antagonists (fake grandmothers, jealous stepmothers, rebellious s*aves) that try to subdue our MC of which I find a tiring, common trope but on the other hand, these characters still manage to weave in the story making it an enjoyable and sometimes frustrating (when I just want to curse them out) read.
    1. ROMANCE: Our male lead (ML) the pretend fool, Qi Zheng and MC have a very dynamic relationship. They didn't make an impact on each other the first time they met, nor was there an immediate attraction. Rather, our MC is quite wary and harsh on him. The ML finds the MC's antics humorous and ultimately ends up liking her because of it LOL anyway, it's this bickering duo that had me sold on this novel. MIGHT I EVEN ADD:
      Spoiler

This is how Qi Zheng lost his reputation as the 'fool': So there was a point in the novel our MC was sent to the countryside where she meets ML along the way and he sticks along the journey having a mission of his own. Fast forward, ML was making our MC agitated with their usual banter and the MC became hot-headed to the point she PUNCHED him where he was blown away, hitting a tree and becoming immediately unconscious. Our MC was flabbergasted, thinking she had developed powers LOL and while Qi Zheng was inside being treated she tried to punch a tree again only to find her hand hurt and bruised... It turns out, it was ML's plan all along to fake a coma and that when he wakes up back in the capital his illness has disappeared. The ML then narrates how our MC is his saviour of which our MC takes very badly after realizing she had been used all along!

      [collapse]

      Why there's an R-18 tag
      Spoiler

further on when they become married, there's a lot of snu snu going on...

      [collapse]
There are many more things that made this novel an enjoyable read for me. It might be a different case for you--but if this review has piqued your interest in any way, do give it a try and find out for yourself.

Standard transmigration-into-historical-setting story. It's not terrible, but it's nothing special either.

FL is an adult who transmigrates into a 13-year-old, but she acts immature for her mental age. She only occasionally uses her modern-day knowledge, so her being transmigrated seems mostly pointless and just exists to explain her "modern day" personality and vague knowledge of future events. She's smart but not brilliant. She can be funny and she doesn't let people walk over her, which results in some fun takedowns, but it also feels like she gets away with too much... more>> given the time period. She doesn't really grow or change as a character.

ML: Why he pretends to be mentally deficient for 10 years is explained and there are plot repercussions when he is "cured, " but it also doesn't feel like a big deal overall since FL knows he's pretending and he eventually proves himself to be perfect anyway. He dotes on FL.

FL and ML are cute together, starting off as a "bickering couple", with some sweetness from ML's part toward kinda-clueless FL in the middle, and then some explicit scenes at the end when they get married. They didn't get as much development as I had expected though. I realize some stories get fluffed up "translated" titles to make them sound more appealing, but this story's English title is misleading since FL is never ML's fiancee until right before they're married late in the story. I thought they'd be engaged and then develop their relationship but nope.

Villains are mostly one note, and secondary characters aren't well developed. Multiple characters are still angry that at *3-years-old*, FL's original body was a brat, and then are completely amazed she's different 10 years later, so that's a thing.

This story is very tame on face-slapping compared to other rebirth/transmigration novels, and FL doesn't really scheme or revenge. Overarching plot could be interesting, but unfortunately the main villain is dumb. Story drags a bit imo and I started skimming. However overall it's a decent read if you're bored. <<less

Honestly, to whoever managed to get through all of it... you deserve a medal.

There are worst transmigration novels, but I am particularly against this type of MC.

I wasn't going to write a review on this, but I saw the someone compare it to Doomed to be a Cannon Fodder and Dreamer in the Spring *cough cough* and I HIGHLY HIGHLY disagree. I love those two novels, and this novel here can't even kiss the ground they walk on. Its the distance between heaven and earth, alright? Don't believe this.

Currently there are 55 chapters for me presented but I CANNOT read further than chap 22. My blood is boiling from the lack of justice the MC is willing to do for herself. Man the plot is just so frustrating and predictable in the most annoying way. I keep trying to go on waiting for the MC to stand up for herself but wow. She's really not a good MC to star in a novel cause there's way too much self abuse right here. As a reader I'm just left mad and impatient. And I know that progressively, this novel will have the MC make a comeback but DAMN. Chap 22 and I'm still left frowning and boiling. This is not the only novel about transmigration so I won't waste my time but I'm also aware that there are people who are content with a slow build up for a novel. I cannot say how good the novel will be past chapter 22, but I'm sure other reviews will fill up the curiosity.

The translator work is very great though.

LITTLE SPOILER DOWN BELOW (chap 1-22)

Right so our ML is the usual ML who pretends to be an idiot but he's actually amazing and beautiful. Bah. Obviously he's bound to marry our MC, however, the process isn't pleasing. Our MC reputation is smeared for "adultery" with the "fool" (ML) in the capital due a scheme from a "white lotus". Most of her relatives hates her guts so they're all trying to make this marriage happen. Our MC gets no respect and she's really not even trying to even improve her reputation or face slap the people who are plotting against her. This is probably the author's way of trying to make the marriage happen for the sake of the plot. But you guys. Hhhhh I want to go further but I'd sound more disrespectful.

I apologize for sounding disrespectful towards this novel in any kind of way. This novel just leaves me frustrated. However, my opinion will not decide whether a novel is actually bad or good. People can like what they like, we all have different tastes. Ok peace out

(Note : there are dˋfew erotics passages in the very end of the book, not many, but explicit)

Plus :

- short 195 chapter feels at the same time long and not too long, so it’s a good measure

... more>> - not as violent and gore as many historical novel (light on mu*der, poisonings and everything that makes many story too much to be remotely believable)

god and bad

- the MC is defined with sub standard modern « values » (lazy, selfish and has no ambition) she’s also « childish » and a foodie (veryyy original?) ..... But - she’s not ever powered, and uses very small means to survive, that will contribute to her surviving the plot... she’s got a great attitude, so while I understand you want to add a few flws to vois mary sue, I definitely can’t understand so many adjectives that are a bit contradictive with the character itself...

- no op, no golfinger - good, an « opponent « which is the heroine, nice too... but the plot grows in a middle of somekind of everyday life which sometimes feels a bit. - lacking? It’s hard to define. I can’t say you it lacks action, but maybe it lacks tension, rythme - for exemple, even if short, do I need a fashion paragraph in the middle of anything anywhere

the bad

- prejudice : as in many stories, vilains are clever but s*upid and there’s no redemption : how you dream they could suddenly realize that all they did was based on their personal mistakes, a wrong idea, a bad concept that would be so much deeper....... worse yet, children are judged and condemned by their parents origns or faults, and there too eave very little room for growth... and it can be morally very wrong...

- the MC can be borderline self centric, of course, the change of period only slightly affects her, but the worse part is the silghly « off » feel of the collection of flaws that plagues her... the writer wants her to be « not to attractive «, but she’ll get a great guy, so she need to be attractive : cannone really be « cute ugly « ?? In the same manner, she cannot be too smart, but without smart she’s boring and can’t survive... ? So you can also forget that she should know things from her own world which could be a Goldfinger too... but jo : she needs to be « mediocre « to fit the cannon fodder standard... and so on... she can’t have « heroine « characteristics, but it’s what she is, sometimes, that balance is impossible to maintain... <<less

Spoiler

Novel about a transmigrated MC into ancient time. The usual cliches (dead mother, general father and brother are away, scheming family, loving estranged maternal family, poor reputation) minus the OP-ness.

ML as cliches goes, scheming step mother and siblings. Was pretending to be silly protect himself.

Antagonist is also living the c*ckroach life, seemingly never ending and dirty. Reborn.

My thoughts

Spoiler

Honestly, not a fan of this novel.

Cliches for me are okay. But I want them delivered in interesting ways.

What I dont like is that MC doesnt need to be OP, she just needs sass and swag. But here, she s meh.

I dont like the Father of MC, ithink he's more hateful than the grandmother. Honestly, If she didnt have a fall out with him somewhere in the novel, Ill drop this. He's a pathetic excuse for a father.

On the first half of the novel, like until the maternal grandfather came. Im not ashamed to admit that I just skimmed through it all ?

On the plus side, of course ilike the sweet moments of MC and ML. The doting maternal family. The doting MLs grandmother.

But for the most part, Ill recommend it to only those who are looking to pass time.

I’m only on chapter 70 but I can’t take it anymore. So many people are giving it a five ⭐️ but I don’t think it’s really worth that much. Like the MC just makes me infuriated with how she acts. She’s always just there doing useless sh!t and it makes me so frustrated.

I greatly admire those who at least passed chapter 40.

The MC is so dumb and s*upid to the point that makes me want to rip out my own hair in frustration, she doesn’t even think like an fully... more>> grown modern adult instead, it’s like she’s actually a b!tchy as$ minor.

Like, isn’t she suppose to be an adult that has transmigrated into a 13 year old brats body? At this point, I’m pretty sure it was a child that transmigrated instead of an adult.

I’ve read many bad transmigration novels but this one is probably one of the worst ones I’ve ever read in my life time. I’m V E R Y against these types of MC’s.

Anyways, don’t listen to those who are giving this book a 5 ⭐️ they’re just spouting bullsh!t.

I only gave this book a 2 ⭐️ because, one; the translators did a great job translating, it’s just that the book s**ked. And two; I’m praising myself for making it to chapter 70.

But If I could, I would’ve given this book 0 stars. <<less

I was nearing the end of the novel, but I got tired of it because of the slow development. The romance did not show up until chapter 89 and then, it took several chapters in between for the romance to reappear. Some innocent characters were affected negatively in order to defend the MC and ML, which is a shame because MC is originally a cannon fodder and she does not like how CF end up in stories, but then something happens (although not deliberately) that causes other characters to be... more>> the cannon fodder instead. It's quite hypocritical. Aside from that, this novel is written well and I will recommend it to others. It's worthwhile to read and the MC has a good character. She does not have cheats - she has neither talent nor hidden skills. The only thing exceptional about her is her clever mouth. <<less

Meh. Okay read, but got confusing around chapter 36-37 of the translation... and then some rather illogical things happened where I'm put off with. I mean, what kind of reasonable adult holds a 3-year-old accountable for things she was quite obviously manipulated into? Also, some parts made me question the general intellect and emotional maturity of the main character and doubt this is really an adult in a child's body, instead of a child in a child's body. I'm not asking for a super intelligent or over-powered, over-ambitious main character,... more>> but just some kind of common sense appropriate for someone who's at least past 20 years. Maybe it's just the translation that's making her come off that way, but since I can't read Chinese, I'll never know. But it just feels like the scenes, characters' actions, and plotline are not very well thought out. <<less

This is a typical modern day girl transmigrates into ancient world cannon fodder. This is nice as the MC isn't super cunning, and doesn't have a lot of "cheats" or "golden-fingers". Unfortunately I was a little disappointed. I thought this was going to be focused more on the romance between ML and MC, however up until now, this is basically a typical ancient world courtyard scheming/disadvantaged/mistreated MC. The MC and ML have very little interactions that I would consider charming/cute/sweet. Perhaps I will come back to this novel once I'm... more>> in the mood for the scheming/drama, but currently I'm just in the mood for some light romance. This will be shelved until later. Gave a 4/5 to be fair, otherwise currently I would've rated this a 2/5 just because I'm not in the mood for this genre and so this story didn't really appeal to me. <<less

She did all those bad things bcs of her one simple reason that she believes till the end and that is her family wasn't the traitor, and they should not be killed by the emperor as a traitor.

If only the MC could tell to the villainess about the traitor in the villainess family, she probably won't end up wasting her life to achieve her pointless revenge. If only the villainess knew about the truth...

In the end, the role of cannon fodder was reverse and the villainess became the cannon fodder in this novel instead and died a worthless dead. I was hoping that at least the villainess would change after she realized how deep the 9th prince love her so she could move on even without knowing the truth behind her family's dead, but nope.. what a pity.

Well, the story is about transmigrated FL VS reborn step-sister. I quite like the interaction between FL and ML, it is funny actually.

One thing that keeps bothering me is that the writer always emphasise on the voice of ML (deep, sexy, melodious, etc). It's fine at the beginning but the writer keep mentioning it several times thorough the story to the point it annoys me. Well, maybe it's just me.

All in all, the story is loveable.

A fun read! I like that the MC isn't OP and that she doesn't arrive in this completely strange era and blends in without a problem. She's pretty cautious in the beginning because she doesn't know what's going on and who to trust. When meeting the people from the palace for the first time, she doesn't know all the right things to say or the fancy phrases to use.

I think there are complaints about the lack of face-slapping but in the earlier chapters, she's definitely still finding her way. Unlike... more>> transmigration stories where they have a golden finger or a big cheat or they're a genius, she's genuinely a cannon fodder character in the beginning, which means she's in the body of a young teenager with not much power. She does have a cheat where she knows some events from the novel she was reading (but not a lot) and she deals with issues by being stubborn, or fast-talking, or shamelessness. Unlike people of that era, she doesn't have the same concern about her reputation, so she's willing to forego that to stay alive or avoid pits.

The face-slapping does occur later on and I thought it was satisfying so far, without going overboard. I also enjoy every time she thinks of herself as a cannon fodder character, either because she's lamenting her luck or preparing to do something cannon fodder-ish. I'm on chapter 123 now and I think it's pretty good so far. <<less

*4 STARS*

It was a solid and enjoyable story! Nothing really stood out to make it unique, but the main characters were pretty likable and the story/romance kept me hooked even though there wasn't a lot of depth. All in all a lighter read for a transmigration into ancient China story.

TRANSLATION/WRITING

... more>> Reallyyy good translations on Isohungry. Great flow/diction and minimal typos if at all. The only mistake I remember is misplaced names (especially towards the latter half) but nothing that makes the story particularly confusing. Thank you translator!

Added a writing section on the header because this could be either the author's actual writing or the way it was translated (which I wouldn't know since I didn't read the raws) : there's a good bit of contradictions. One sentence would say "she tried not to look anywhere" and the next paragraph would mention "she looked up and saw the gardens." Or something like "she congratulated the empress" and the next paragraph someone would go "aren't you going to speak to the empress?" I noticed these kinds of contradictions pop up multiple times and while it doesn't necessarily affect one's reading experience, it certainly lends a juvenile tone when it comes to the writing style. So, future readers do take note.

CHILL HEROINE

I read a review that called the FL impulsive, and I have to agree. She's supposed to be an adult who transmigrated to a 13 year old's body, but she doesn't think too hard throughout the story and certainly acts her new body's age. I don't think it's necessarily negative though, it just means she's not OP and got no golden fingers. Sister's literally trying to survive with the clothes on her back, lol. Sometimes the writing goes back and forth between her being cutthroat (like when rebuking her evil grandmother) and being lazy/chill (like not wanting to learn business until she gets a goal in mind). At the end of the day though, sis is just trying to survive and feels like a real character instead of an emotionless heroine who only knows how to face-slap and win against her enemies.

At the end of the day, she's likable, but don't get your hopes up for a scheming heroine who is ready to win at all costs. Most of the time she's defending rather than attacking, reacting rather than being pro-active. It was a little frustrating for me in the beginning but after I got used to that part of her characer, I moved on.

Something I appreciated that I usually don't see in this kind of novel was the FL's communication skill. For example, the way she can talk to one of her cousins who was initially jealous of her but, after clearing misunderstandings up, became friends with again, or having a serious conversation with the ML about letting her know when he's in trouble because she cares about him and doesn't want secrets. It's always refreshing to get some clear communication in between characters.

TRANSMIGRATION TROPES BUT TONED DOWN

You want transmigration tropes, you got'em. The only thing is, the FL is just here to survive and kind of does the bare minimum (lol). Not that it's bad, but a lot of big events kind of happen in the background while she's living her life.

FL pops up at the moment the ogFL of the story tries to set her up with the ML that everyone thinks is mentally not well. She finds out ML is actually quite smart and sharp and they manage to outwit ogFL. OgFL has a grudge against her because - surprise, surprise - ogFL has actually reincarnated and in her past life, the FL's family falsely accused the ogFL's father of betraying the nation which led to her demise. This lifetime, with the luck of being a main character, she wants to get revenge and becomes successful. Unlucky for her, we have a new female lead in town in the form of Ziqiao. Our FL has read this story, skipped over most parts, and doesn't know how the ending played out. The transmigration part doesn't help her at all except for some outside knowledge in some scenes, so again, no cheats.

What else in a transmigration? We got a harem of guys who like the ogFL that pop up, including a devoted ninth prince (it's always the ninth dude!), a savvy businessman (sigh, once a 2ML always a 2ML), the crown prince (who apparently is the guy we're rooting for to take the throne), among others. Got some weird slutshaming of the ogFL (sis is just tryna survive, albeit evilly), unlikable father's side of the family, likeable mother's side of the family, and unexpected allies (as well as enemies) in court.

Spoiler

The real story is that the ogFL's family was betraying the emperor - oops! She ends up scheming her way to become the emperor's concubine after her family is massacred for their betrayal (oof) and kind of dies off-screen along with the emperor. FL doesn't really have a hand in any of the politics, just some business matters that were pretty cool. Qi Zheng, the ML, is more involved with court politics off-screen and most of the drama, especially towards the end, happens in the background.

[collapse]

SWEET (& SMEXY) ROMANCE

For some reason I really like the trope of an ML pretending to be weak/pitiful but actually being strong, and Qi Zheng is like that in this Cnovel. He has to pretend to be a fool to stay alive in his household because his evil stepmother is, well, evil, and eventually reveals that he was "cured" and fights for his position, eventually proving himself through his accomplishments. And the FL is with him the whole way :D (It's also fun to see how they're both unlikable/unpopular in the beginning but as the story continues, rise up in popularity and respect among the citizens.)

So she knows he has a facade from the beginning, and then she's like "well I don't want to marry him because I don't like him like that." But they still interact and help each other out, while bantering, and they eventually fall in love. Woohoo! Remember though that she starts off as a 13 year old and he's 20 (or so), which, yikesss (lemme tell you, this author sure is comfortable with age gap couples). BUT nothing super frisky happens until a time skip and she's of "legal age" in ancient China which is like 16 years old. And by frisky, I mean some good ol' sexy times. ;) The smut is lightly written, but it's there which I as a reader appreciate, and it's consensual (which I appreciate even more). Ofc there's the usual "she was so tired the next day" and "how does he have so much energy to keep going?!" but ML gets a plus in my books for helping her clean up and making sure she was having a good time too.

Suffice it to say, I like how the romance progressed and how the ML and FL are a team from quite early on. They're not a power couple, per se, but they're a Solid One that can still get things done.

OVERALL

Good for a transmigration novel where you don't really have to use your brains. Light/simple plot, characters that are fun and more on the superficial side, and in general all the tropes of a good ancient Chinese drama without, well, most of the drama. There's stuff happening so the plot isn't boring, but the FL just isn't a very active participant. Instead we're trying to slice of life it to the good ending. That's not to say there is no drama, but there definitely is less than what was set up.

Also, because of the nature of the story, the ending is rather rushed. It's a happy ending, but since so many things are happening in the background, a lot of characters' situations have a positive outlook but no actual details on how they ended up.

TL;DR Read this if you're into:

  • Ancient Chinese novels with all the family feuds and political drama but mostly put in the background.
  • Simple FL who just wants to live happily and protect the people around her.
  • Sly ML who started from the bottom to make it big and is fiercely loyal to the FL.
  • Bickering couple!! Yas to a dislike-to-love romance.
  • A happily ever after!

I really want to give this story a 5 stars because the plot is quite interesting but in the end, I decide to deduce 1 stars because of some reasons:

    • MC was so unlikeable. She was impulsive, narrow-minded, and always acted like a shrew. It's so unsighty. Really, it's surprising that she could survive in ancient era with her attitude. Fortunately as she was getting used to ancient era, she became more mature and clear-headed. But still I couldn't forget how she acted in the beginning.
    • The ending was super rushed. It's like the author didn't care anymore and tried to tie the loose ends in just 1 chapter. How could it be a satisfying end? Also, one of my favorite character wasn't even mentioned in the ending:
      Spoiler

It's MC's brother Shen Zikai. Did he and his wife manage to take the household power back from the second aunt? I really want to see the second aunt got face-slapped because she looked down on MC so much. And how about 9th prince and Shen Zixin's ending? 9th prince cleary married her half heartedly but there was no news about their marriage life till the end

I completely agree with Agathe. Her review perfectly explains the story.

I like my F- MCs powerful, witty and independent yet not too OP. I love it when the main couple is interdependent on each other and not one relying on the other too much. I enjoy watching the characters learn and grow into wiser and more powerful being who are not just limited to face slapping all the time.

The Character Development is barely visible. The only thing she learns is how to run her business.

I've read the first 86 chapters... more>> where she was still fighting in the backyard and I got bored to I skipped to some 140+ chapter where she got married and finished the novel. However I did go back to some 120 or some chapters to read some major developments.

If you're impatient like me you might find yourself skipping the chapters like I do especially at the beginning. <<less
