Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

I loved mostly everything about this danmei. It had very likeable side and main characters. The story was mostly entertaining, but some parts, I thought, were dragged on and placed wrong. That is the flashbacks.

The danmei in China is released as five individual books. Two of those books were solely based off flashbacks. Don’t get me wrong, I love flashbacks, but these two flashbacks appeared at the most climatic part. When we’re back into the present from the first flashback which was around 30 chapters, you’re met with an anticlimactic... more>> conclusion.

Since this danmei was made by the same author of Mo Dao Zu Shi, the characters in this were also three-dimensional. The relationship dynamics between MC and ML were beautiful, but I find that ML became creepy towards the end of the main story.

Though it’s so long, I’ve ended up rereading it quite a few times due to the fact the events are so interesting and I can’t get enough of the characters. I’m actually writing this view after my 3rd reread.

As those who’ve read the novel said, HuaLian invented love.

A truly excellent novel. The MC is a absolutely fantastic character, and the character growth we see throughout his journey from naive prince to worldly god is so well mapped out. This story describes the fall of kingdoms, and attempts to delve into human nature. It is certainly tragic, but has a HE. The ML is likeable as a love interest, but is fairly archetypical on most levels. The side characters are varied and fascinating, and their stories are also explored. A definite must-read.

I love this story with all my heart, its both entertaining and heartwarming at the same time. I adore the way it is written and I love the characters of both Xie Lian and Hua Cheng, they're so so beautiful. The start might be a little difficult as this is definitely slow burn romance but it is so so beautiful in every way, the best bl romance I've read.

for some reason I keep on delaying reading this novel, maybe because the summary didnt entice me before, but here I am I finished reading it just in 3 days.

I SOB! Ugly Sob that I need get my inhaler. XL past is just heartbreaking I need Hua Hua IRL.

... more>> 800 years? 800 years.... ahhhh

as much as I love MDSZ smutness, naughtiness of SV the vanilla flavor romance of this novel hit me so hard. I would rank it 1st in MXTX novel.

MXTX has worked her magic once again. The story is very intricately built, the characters were also relatable in their feelings and actions.

There was a point in the story which left me broken and I didn't know how to continue the story anymore. The angst is real. But it teaches you that as long as you survive through it, you will definitely come out stronger!

I wish you all the heavenly officials blessing! With infinite possibilities!!

I actually adored this one, loved the balance between the plot and boy love scenes. Was it funny? Hilarious; Was it thoughtful? Very much. All the spoilers on YouTube were heartbreaking. I kinda wish laws weren't so strict now because it restricted relationship between the MC and ML made feel like I was delusional but the extra's make up for it. The other characters are admirable, you learn to love Pei Ming and Ling Wen, adore Lord Wind Master and Earth Master. Die laughing because of Feng Xin and... more>> Mu Qing.

It was a pleasurable experience reading this novel. I am praying for MXTX's fourth book. <<less

personal rating is probably a 4.5 (though 5 would probably be more accurate in accordance with the ratings on this site)

Ok so TGCF is definitely one of the reasons I'm a sucker for cultivation stories lol. The characters are lovable and pretty realistic (maybe not the ML cause he's basically perfect but we can overlook that ;)). The kind that you can relate and empathize with. The plot is interesting to follow and not boring. There's always something going on in each chapter to look forward to. Personally, my... more>> favourite parts of the novel are the little interactions between the characters.

Spoiler

almost all the characters have some sort of mysterious past or background of some kind and I really like how the author takes that into account when writing. Its the kind of book that you could reread multiple times, one without the knowledge of the situation and one with, and getting different experiences each time. You get the feeling of "ohhhhh so thats why they did **". Kinda like an inside joke. Its really nice.

world building is also excellent <<less

To be fair, I think this is closer to a 4.5 stars for me. I think this novel did a lot right, I really enjoyed it, and had a great time reading it. But there are some flaws to it that makes me tick it down by 0.5. I have not read MDZS or SVSSS before this. My review for this will be without any prior knowledge of MXTX's world.

World Building

Honestly, one of the best. It's a beautiful world that MXTX created, with a system of gods and demons. We're... more>> brought on a pretty magical journey across the realms, to one location to another, and they're described in wonderful ways that give them their own unique atmosphere.

Plot

TGCF definitely has great plot. It starts off with small arcs that gradually grow in complexity and scale as more characters are introduced and the world building grows. Personally, one of my favorite arcs was He Xuan's -- in terms of how everything lead to this situation, how it comes from past conflicts, how it resolves -- it's dark. It's also extremely atmospheric.

MXTX really included some wonderful plot twists every now and then that kept us on our toes. However, I think while world building and character developing -- sometimes pacing becomes an issue. It gets a little slow and at some parts it's confusing and frankly a little boring to read. It's not often, but it happens.

Characters

I love Hua Cheng. I love Xie Lian. I love Mu Qing. I love Feng Xin. I basically love every single character that has been introduced. Even the villains of each arc have their motives and you can understand why they decide to do what they did. However, I think despite the vivid personalities, most of my qualms fall here shockingly. Most of these comments are MY opinions and totally subjective.

The romance is nice. In a way, I do think it's uneven. There's also a bit of insta-love that happened (really reminiscent of Guardian if I'm being honest) that doesn't make it feel as natural, but at the end I still believe it.

Spoiler

I think it's the nature of the book I'm reading. We're talking about gods and immortals. At the end, the inconsistency between powers and the soft magic system that basically exists in this world makes it a little confusing how things can happen. One day it feels like a character can take on the world, the other times they feel as helpless as humans.

And, because we're dealing with immortals and gods -- the stakes always felt... limited. Investment in terms of where the characters can go, what's going to happen is always going to be limited. I never got to the same level of being on the edge of my seat (except for He Xuan's arc and a bit of Jun Wu's final chapters). And, whenever Hua Cheng came in, I felt that sense of safety, but it would have been nice to see him more shaken up, things to really shake that cool. Book 4 is probably one of my favorite books as a whole, but that was because we saw really genuine strife and suffering from the characters. They had hardships, there was tension -- and I absolutely love reading things like that. The rest... it was nice to discover their past, see how it intertwines in the present, but the stakes were too low for my taste.

[collapse]

I think those are my main points. I still found this an immensely enjoyable read and would recommend it to everyone. I've heard people call this a sad read, but I found it pretty light and fluffy most of the time. Some parts were intense and brutal, but never made me bawl. Book 4 got a few tears, but not to the extent of 2HA for me (unrelated, I know, but that's one of the most painful sh*t I've experienced in my life). <<less

four stars. Five stars in my heart but four stars if i’d have to rate. I personally feel that this story is amazing, the plot twists, the plot itself is really a masterpiece, it could be because I dont read many novels but it really is chef’s kiss ???. I loved how xie lian was written. His past, I loved the flashback when xie lian had first been banished, really beautifully written. Although sometimes it’s confusing but after a while, you’ll grasp how things are. Tgcf was really able to... more>> make me laugh a lot, cry, furious and every other emotions. Xie lian himself really is just a beautiful character. Really worth reading, I dont regret binge reading for the past week. <<less

This was super cute! The world created by the author is very vivid and alive, it felt like I was watching a movie inside my head. Good plot twists too!

On a sidenote, this has very light BL, so don't expect anything smutty (for that you can go to MoDaoZuShi haha) !

Beauty but has its own flaw. 4/5

Let me tell you first, this book was good. The plot was amazing, characters are complex and you'll find yourself root for them. They have their own story, traits, and quirks. The story was also an emotional roller coaster, I find my self squealed at the main couple, gritting my teeth and cursing in frustration, cried tears for the tragedy and fate of characters. However, the mention good points only come if you build enough suspension of disbelief fast enough. This is the main... more>> problem of this book. Some plot points are resolved rather halfheartedly or forceful I find it so painfully hard to enjoy. For example,

Spoiler

The story between Yinyu (ML's servent) and Quan Yizhen was a cringe-worthy mess. So, YY can command QYZ to do anything because QYZ was under the influence of an evil item. But he lost it and command QYZ to run, then fight, then kill himself. WTF? This was beyond out of character. The author gave a simple reason for all that mess-Quan Yizhen lost his mind so he lost the ability to think. It's unconvincing though. He was angry so he lost it, this point was clear. What was unbelievable was that WHY he made those mistakes "coincidentally" and "consecutively".

[collapse]

Spoiler

The past arc was also painful to read, mainly because Xie Lian was still a pushover, naive boy who ran around saving people in distress. As if the authour was not satisfied enough, she managed to make Xianle citizen complete scum who blamed Xie Lian for everything. It was a bit too gratuitously angsty. The only saving grace was his encounter with MC.

I can't say many, because it's "must read" And I can't comment such stories, because it very good for this.

It's good plot. The ratio events which all have meaning and sense, and tragic flashbacks. Setting is amazing, it's fantastic and magical things in the ancient world.

All characters have alive personalitys and reasons which explains their acts. They don't positive or negative, even protagonists also have own life values and purposes.

MC multifaceted personality and this is that character who really learning at his past mistakes. ML is very soft and gentle... more>> with MC. It's really fluffy interaction. You are really will be exciting when they will be communicate.

All I want to say, it's - divine. Exciting, sad and you forced to read for very end. Plot twist and sincere feelings of main characters. Picturesque descriptions and there are comedic situations too. <<less

After reading so many negative reviews I couldn't help but intervene ? I'm sorry okay, I too agree that Hua Cheng didn't have much of a background story nor we got to see how he became this powerful and well respected and for those who think Xie Lian is a terrible character/person well THINK AGAIN, this poor boy became a God at the age of 17, he was still a teenager for Gods sake, he couldn't just stand by and watch his kingdom getting destroyed. He wholeheartedly believed that he... more>> could save the common people and did whatever he could, like what was he supposed to do? Just sit back and do nothing like most Gods do? Watch the people burn and suffer? He was a martial God but tried to create rain for months, he descended and fought along with his army and people not giving two shits about his own status, I think that's what a true hero should do, he went through so much sh*t for his people and yet they destroyed him, they were too f*cking naive and after all of his sufferings xie lian didn't complain, he let go of his might and glory and exchanged it for his people for them not to suffer. That's a true hero and a God worth worshipping. Yet some of you think that he didn't do anything for the common people, he let them stab him, walk over him, he watched his kingdom fall, his parents die and his friends leave but never held any grudges and didn't become a ghost, continued to live peacefully amongst humans, do any of you know how this can change someone? What doesn't kill you only makes you stranger, it's okay for him to not want to save the common people anymore maybe because he thinks he isn't capable of it, maybe his self esteem has been crushed, maybe because he simply doesn't want to be that kind of worshiped and respected God anymore and live a peaceful life, those traumas can really change a person. There were many questions unanswered, yes some of you are right but nothing is perfect, this amazing author created this world out of her sheer imagination, it's no easy task and she is still learning, so be patient, this story has alot of potential, btw I think the reason why Hua Cheng may have waited for like 800 years might've been because he was simply not powerful enough back then and needed time to become the man he truly wanted himself to become, someone that that could protect Xie Lian and support him. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng both are mature and interesting characters, their romance was pure and beautiful <3 besides the details the symbolism, every word is meaningful and the plot twists leave you shocked, as always you can't predict anything and as usual the world is well built and does not contradict it's own rules. All characters are well built and play a great role in the story. Besides you call Hua Cheng creepy and too devoted? HUH? He was a beggar on the streets literary abused and injured, it was clear that no one wanted him, no one bothered to be kind and generous to that street rat but Xie lian interrupted a freaking huge important God pleasing ceremony just to save his life, Xie lian always chose the common people and personally cared for Hua Cheng, a crown prince took care of a beggar and kept him around, he always showed Hua Cheng kindness and stood by him despite everyone telling him he was born under an unlucky star and blah blah. I would not carve 1000 but a billion statues and worship the person who stands by me and helps me get through hard times, he carved the statues to replace all those believers who abandoned Xie Lian, sometimes one true believer is enough, this one person that supports and loves you for who you turly are and both men stood by each other's side. That's just beautiful and romantic, Romeo & Juliet who?

thank you guys for translating this masterpiece, and thank you MXTX, I absolutely love your works and hope to meet you in person one day <3 that mind of yours is truly outstanding. <<less

MUST READEST OF ALL MUST READS

It's funny, sweet, adorable and legendary. Dianxia and Xiao Hong are amazing together and I love them.

TW// small spoilers

... more>> Xie Lian isn't the dumb little "in distress" shou, he is brave but only human, even after ascending (several times) and cultivating to immortality. He is powerful and smart, but so unlucky that makes you want to put him in a small pot and take care.

Hua Cheng isn't an unreasonably possessive gong, and even tho he is the scary Ghost King, the author managed to make him a part of the comedic relief, he is so stunning and glorious but also so nice and greatful, makes you wish all man were San Lang.

I can't name all the caracthers I loved cuz I'd need to be here all day. I loved all of it. Read it, really. <<less

This is soo goodd!! I'm crying my lungs out. The thing I liked in this novel is tht the characters are cool. The author really wrote well for characters even side characters and villains. Even if you are a MC or a villain or what this novel gives the imprrssion tht everyone makes mistakes. Some say this has no plot but for me I feel it's really well-written. The middle few chapters may be boring but this is really a good read
