Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. At the time of writing this, I am at c170 and I am in need of a break from reading this. To be honest, 244 chapters is considered not a long novel to me. But because there are too many arcs, side stories, and tragedy. I feel tried.

I am absolutely agree with another review by chenjiayi that the misery is excessive and when there is no healing provided at the end it creates negative energy when reading... more>> the novel. And this is exactly what happening to me.

So I will take a break from this novel for now.

Oh. And the reason I give it a 4 stars because this is still a very well written, very creative, and way better than many other novels I have read. It is just not my cup of tea. <<less

Don't ever y'all seek for the information about 'The 4 Great Calamities". Never. Because there's a lot of SPOILER. And I regret once I know those even I haven't read book 2.

And about the love story,... I don't know how to describe it. It is really beautiful and hurt. I'm kdrama fans, but this story, is really beautiful than (some) kdramas I have watched before. this book, really entertain me and teach me a lot of things.

Not only the main characters that have such a great stories, even the side characters have their own great stories. <<less

First of all, I’ll have to say that TGCF is definitely more plot heavy than Scum Villain and MDZS combined! I think MXTX grasped the feeling of angst after experimenting with her previous novels, so she decided to unleash it in TGCF lmao. Xie Lan and Hua Cheng match each other so well. We have one person who went through so much (witnessed the downfall of his own kingdom, saw his dead parents who committed su*cide, and endured countless mocks and jeers of both heaven officials and civilians alike), yet still persisted on and continued to live even though all he did was collect junks. On the other hand, we have another person whose childhood was everything EXCEPT happy, yet when he wanted to die, he was saved by someone and decided that he wanted to live for that person just because of a split moment of kindness. Xie Lan also decided against unleashing the Human Face Disease on Yong’an due to a moment of kindness from a stranger. In a way, both MC and ML are similar in a lot of ways. The arcs where I cried were: 1. When Mu Qing said that he wanted to be f-f-friends with His Highness the Crown Prince (this was so wholesome, MQ you tsundere). 2. When Hua Cheng finally returned back after dispersing into butterflies after lending his spiritual powers to Xie Lan. This was definitely a roller coaster of emotions for me, but it was worth it. Last words: Hua Cheng and Xie Lan invented love. And that’s on periodt.

While this might be a slow burn, it's the good kind. I'm completely content with the way it was and the way it ended. My way of reading it was binging a lot of chaps and then taking a break for a while, because of whatever reasons, sometimes I just felt like it. However, I always came back. I can definitely say this was worth to read. I'm excited to check out the scum villain novel now. :&Gt;

It was a bit slow paced and lengthy (even if its lengthy dont skip any chap) but the plot is perfect. There is real character development. Translation is also good.
The relationship of MC and ML got my heart laugh and cry. It is really an emotional roller coaster.

My second book by this author. I love the overarching plot of the story. I love the mini arcs mystery writing which make me invested. The side characters are all fleshed out well with mini arcs of their own. The plot twists are quite fun to read.

I enjoy the characters in this. Some character can be defined by what prominent trait but there’s always a deeper layer to them as well as history. The entangled backstories of the characters are so much. There is always a sort of moral question... more>> I feel? I like how you can empathise and see from each character POV, and their reasoning behind their actions. Such that even when they did morally dubious question, you can understand why they chose to do it. That’s what make them enjoyable to read since there’s no exact right and wrong characters.

I like the MC a lot. He’s not just the naive nice MC but does a lot more. The backstories really show how he changes throughout the years and I feel the author does show the effects of living for centuries well. The world building and power system is also easy to understand.

As we see more of the backstory, we learn more about the MC and ML and I must say this must be one of the most romantic love story ever without the need of smut. It’s just so pure and cute.

The story is divided well into past and present so its easy to read. Although I do think some parts where exposition is just given isn’t the most well done. But it’s necessary. I also enjoy the humour in this book, they may be tiny sections but make it easier and more fun to read! Overall enjoyed this novel a lot! <<less

simplifying it: precious cinnamon roll dubbed Xie Lian ascends for the Third™ time because the first time had Circumstances behind it and the second had even more Circumstances behind it but despite the inevitable resentment born from the fact that he, well, basically got demoted two times already, he remains the Goodest boy and diligently roams the world picking up scraps when he became mortal.

which, regrettably, is a far cry from his life as a crown prince loved by all but it's been 800 years since those simple times and he's now ascended for the third time and of course, everyone just can't help but mutter, "god it's THAT guy again"

enter the male lead (but I won't tell you when exactly, read and figure it out) who has, well, been in love with our cinnamon roll for uh 800 years give or take (talk about dedication amirite).

STORY (you ask) ?

well the story is, to put it simply, IMPECCABLE (am I even using this word right? I doubt I can summarize tgcf's pure beauty in just ONE word that's asking for too much).

i mean. Its complicated, you see. A whole 'nother level of Complicated (im aware this is the starting sentence one usually uses before they go on a whole spiel about their ex or their current relationship but like, , I read webnovels until 6 am do you think I even HAVE one).

as with all stories, there's the Backstory™, a backstory that made me cry at 3 am in the morning because I am Weak and because Angst.

also I just think it's absolutely GENIUS how everything just. Ties together so nicely? Things that seemed like a plotholes because it's already been a hundred chapters since then and you can't help but bash the author and then suddenly you're slapped with the truth and you just, , have to Wait and actually Think about it and it all fits in so nicely like the last piece of the puzzle?

honestly am I qualified to say whether or not the characters actually had depth? The truth is yes, im a reader, ur have my opinion, BUT am I experienced enough to answer in the majority of opinions?

others may say they were shallow, but to me, they were all perfect. They had my heart, took it with them, crushed them under the angst and then nurtured it back to health when everything ended up alright. So yes, the characters were great.

world building uh

it was sick? It wasn't like it was hard to understand terms and everything, because thank GOD (xie lian) there weren't any info dumps (because who actually LIKES info dumps they're like. A mess that my two (2) brain cells can never Hope to comprehend) but the plotline wasn't slow and boring because of it. N

it was more the opposite; BECAUSE the author didn't spend half the novel trying to explain how ✨ magic ✨ worked and stuff it allowed us to focus on what was ACTUALLY happening and for that im

Okay, I must admit that I was very, very surprised by how much negativity quite a few sum of people showed towards this novel (especially Xie Lian). You could say that I hardly write any reviews, much less an argument piece, but I had to defend one my most favorite CN.

[Lots of spoilers here and there]
For one thing, the plot development was really good. So good that I can't even teel how many times I've read it again and again. Some things are unresolved because, well, you can't expect everything to unravel itself in front of you, right? Although this may be a story, you must understand that not everything could be explained. Just like how maybe in a mu*der case, you can't always expect the 'bad person' to be caught, can you? In reality, it's the same way; something always stay unsolved.

As for those who say that, "Why is XL not doing anything when he says he want to save the common people", you would understand why if you read Book 4/c181<.

His country was wiped out by its own people, his most trusted subordinates and best friends abandoned him for their own sake, his mother and father was forced to flee and starve, and in the end, his father died of illness and stress that accumulated when he was on throne, and his mother hanged herself, right in front of XL's face because she couldn't live without her husband and this constant heartbreak for her son (the banishment, the draught, the shame, the disease). That wasn't even the worst of all! And then all those other stuff jus' came crushing down. Won't you go crazy? They (those people who started the riot--LangYing) are lucky that XL chose to stick to his um, belief, (I don't know how you say '初心' in English. But there's that word anyway.) and not release the Human Face Disease once again upon (Emperor) Lang Ying and those people who basically massacred the royal capital.

Also, what's with the "Hua Cheng is sooo OP. He has no depth."? How is he being OP? It doesn't state ANYWHERE in the whole book that he uses his power & smartness to suppress people, or use his 'amazingness' to woo away everyone. And the part when he

I would recommend this novel to anyone. You know, just try it out. Though I recommend you to get a whole box of tissues, there's gonna be some real heartbreak from Book 4 and onwards.

(***Edit:...I was actually gonna write a review, but... hahaha. I think I went off course. Anyway, for those who are new and looking through the comments for feedback, I'd say just try it. You'll see whether this is your cup of tea or not. BTY, you can find the, ahem, almost completed—but missing some beginning chapters—translation by Rynn and Suika, I think??)

definitely one of my fave and one of the best i've ever read!

this novel gave me one hell of an emotion roller coaster ride. What I love about is that xie lian, tho he is a god, is very relatable in some sense, on how he has live and his experiences. But ofc, I really love hua cheng too like he's one if the best ML i've ever read, the way he still come back for xie lian every single time, even after his death, his disappearance like how can... more>> there be someone who'll love you like to that extent? I love how the story was written and the plot twists has unfolded tho i'll be honest, I kinda like it more if there are some bigger consequences that jun wu has to face after all the things that he's done. <<less

This was the first danmei I read and it affected me so much. I loved the interactions between the main ship and side ships (head canons) but book 2 and 4 hurt so bad. I liked how all the characters in this danmei are not quite homophobic, judging on character rather than gender.

HC’s devotion to XL is so so sweet. I want what they have!

I havent read the author's other novels yet, and slightly attracted to this after reading the webcomic. And what a pleasant suprise, as the comic capture the beauty scenery and adorable characters, the novel focus more on faith and how it inspire you to think deeply every actions you will make when faced with choices. And the line that really flutter my heart

Better than Founder of Diabolism. I love the MC. He is so good! Really worthy of being a god. And I love how the ML loves the MC. Also nicely paced and colorful side characters. One of the few I may go back and read a second time.

OMG I LOVED THIS NOVEL! This was the second novel I read by this author (I read MDZS first and then read SVSSS after). Although I wouldn't say this novel was as good as MDZS, it was by no means bad. The plot is absolutely amazing! There are twists and turns, and is really interesting! I love over powered characters so this story is great haha! The characters are also really well written! I love the adorable and silly Xie Lian! He is great! Not only is he pretty smart,... more>> he also doesn't care! He's is totally shameless and just does as he pleases.

Xie Lian also isn't super perfect and went through a lot of suffering in the past, which makes him a really interesting main character! Hua Cheng is awesome! He's gorgeous, clingy, and powerful! His powers are awesome and I really love how committed he is to Xie Lian! The romance was really well written and wasn't forced.

Even though Hua Cheng has loved and followed Xie Lian for 800 years, he doesn't force Xie Lian to love him. Instead he lets Xie Lian fall in love with him on his own.

I also love how Xie Lian had so many separate identities throughout the 800 years. Its really cool to read about all the s*upid stuff he has done. Haha

Honestly, one of the best novels I have read, however this is fully based on the english translation. There were so many relatable moments and so many heart-breaking and cute moments that melted my heart. This is worth the read, and it will leave you wanting for more. (Can't wait for the donghua!!)

This series really hit me hard. There are so many relatable moments when you just don't know what is right and what is wrong. I really love how deep each character is written with very distinguished characteristics. The adventure in the story is easier to follow than MXTX's other novels; probably because of how the books are separated. There are many moments in the novel where I wanted to cry my eyes out for Xie Lian, and this means the novel was well written enough to get attached to the... more>> MC. Really good, too bad no smut LOL. Still, world building was top notch. Twists appearing out of nowhere. I love Hua Cheng’s devotion, damn. Not creepy at all haha ok maybe a little. Xie Lan’s saintly beginning to his numb, humbling, innocent present character was endearing. In the end he was giddily clinging to (HC) San Lang anyway.

Best of, it’s happy ending. There could be heartaches, like maybe 2x I was upset haha. Even so, fluff moments were peppered throughout, super sweet. Calling your lover Gege was haha, I remember... more>> yizhan.

Was curious about the span of 800 years tho. Flashbacks from 1st and 2nd ascensions didn’t seem to cover a few hundred years, or did it??
Also, I hope there was a short explanation how HC became that strong, even as Wuming, he wasn’t the Red Ghost King yet then?

Oh my gosh this story gave me goosebumps, it's just that perfect. Bone deep anguish and pain you feel helpless but to shed tears for the main couple. I thought I was done after Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, but I was wrong. So dead wrong, there's hardly any raunchy hardcore sm*x scenes but the story is so beautifully written why even sully it that way.
