Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

I made an account here just to review this novel but now I realized that I don't even have the words to describe how wonderful it is. I'll just write some objective impression about the most important things

1. SETTING-The plot of this novel deserves more recognition not only for the story and the topics discussed but mostly for the setting: it revolves around the three realms of the ancient taoist mythology (mortal realm, heaven and ghost realm), each of them are described thoroughly and you totally feel immersed in these... more>> locations also thanks to the little details on which the autor focuses (the sounds, the people's voices, the nature, the buildings ecc), the scenary described of the ancient Cina are beautiful and you can also realize that by looking at STARember's wonderful illustrations (the illustrator of the manhua)

2. PLOT-The plot of this novel it's my favorite so far because it's a perfect combination between the actual plot and the romance (i read novels that were HIGHLY plot driven and the romance was kinda poor, or novels in which there was TOO MUCH romance and the plot was kinda bad), so there aren't some awkard scenes when the main couple it's all lovey-dovey while a disaster it's around them but it's also very filled with A LOT of fluffy and romantic moments in almost every chapter at the RIGHT time. Anyway, the plot is *chef kiss* because at the end you'll realize that EVERYTHING is connected like a web, and EVERY character that may seem irrelevent then it's revealed to have a BIG ROLE in the whole story

Also, it's NEVER boring. There are a lot of archs, lots of characters (and I LOVED that every character had their background story, even if they were just side characters-the autor did an amazing job and demonstrated a very high ability to handle such a complicated plot without missing any details) and, like I said before, it may seem that everything is disconnected but at the end the whole story led the MC to understand everything that happened in his life and mostly to finally deal with his past.

3. THE MAIN COUPLE-Don't even get me started with them...i shipped a lot of couple in all the animes or manga/manhua I read but they are so far my favorite couple, the best written, with the best chemistry, with the best emotional and romantic (and kinda tragic) past behind they're back. Their feelings will grow in such a simple yet wonderful way through the whole novel and it will eventually reach perfection at the end. The couple is VERY strong, their feelings and trust for each other never wavered, not even ONCE, from the very beginning. They're truly devoted to each other (especially the ML, he's LITTERALY the most devoted character and simp I know... but I already warn you: his devotion will lead also to the most heartbreaking and saddest parts in the novel, what he did for the MC in 800+ years it's just... unbelievable yet really heartwelming.) Like I said, they have the perfect chemistry, talk a lot about really anything, share common intrests and each of them learn something new everyday thanks to the other. There a lot of fluffy moments between them (if you are here for the smut, then I already tell you: there's not, luckly, I think it would have spoiled the tender feeling I had through the whole novel - although in the extra chapters there are some scenes that are just...;))

4. CHARACTERS-I won't talk about all the characters because it would require an entire night so i'll just focus on the main characters. The MC (xie lian) is a pure sunshine, he's so fluffy and super funny and careful and kind and beautiful BUT absolutely DON'T understimate him. He's a god (litterally) maybe the strongest that as ever existed and has a strong sense of justice so whenever somebody hurts his loved ones or does something that goes against the good deeds, he would fight with them til they become just... nullity🤠. The ML (hua cheng) is a very complicated character. He is DEEPLY (VERY deeply) cold hearted with everybody who isn't xie lian but when he's with him he becomes the most careful and gentle and shameless (i love how he flirts) person ever. Hua cheng truly loves xie lian, he loved him for more then 800 years and he will love him for thousands and thousands more... like I said, this novel has a lot of heartbreaking moments about litterally every character but the things I read about what hua cheng did for xie lian in his past it's what really broke me💔

I can't write more but I HIGHLY raccomend this novel if you're looking for an emotional and heartwarming romance+excellent and SMART plot with very good written characters+ancient cina+TEARS+happy ending+family found novel+comicity and a lot more that you'll just love until the end<3 <<less

This is the only novel that I have read that made me cry like a baby. Amazing plot and great interactions with our main couple and the other characters. This book is a must read!!!!

TGCF is my first danmei that I've read and is why I started to read danmei every now and then. The romance between MC and ML is really great. They have a healthy relationship. The flow of the story, the plot, and the characters are well written and the translation is adequate!

The backstory between the MC and ML really made me cry. The pain, helplessness, hatred, it was just too much for my heart to bear! The two of them really made a big impact on me, so I always... more>> cry watching TGCF animation videos. What's more is that it has an animation and manhua, so I better prepare my tissues when it reaches Xie Lian's first banishment scene. ML is so freaking devoted to MC and the reason why he still stayed when he was a ghost really stabbed my heart. He is also very patient, like he waited 800 freaking years for him, and he always supports MC, which is really sweet, and he is very understanding too. In short, he's a husband material.

I really love the story. You have totally got to read this masterpiece! <<less

This was long af. And not the drag it out kind of long, but an adequate long read, tying up loose ends (well, almost.)

A lot of comments here state that they were dissatisfied with the relationship development between XL and HC. And I kind of understood where their opinions were coming from. But I was satisfied with it.

HC is the devotee kind and when he was at his lowest, XL showed him kindness when no one else would, and he latched onto that. Literally. It may seem really abrupt and creepy when we see it from one standpoint, that they both didn't know each other well and they didn't even talk much, but even then HC loved XL from the bottom of his heart and was ready to do anything for him. But it wasn't actually just one act of kindness or a fleeting moment of goodwill on XL's part. He helped HC more than once, on several occasions. Even though XL didn't remember HC when they met again, he remembered the boy he helped. HC's unwavering obsessive devotion is flawed, and it's not like mxtx doesn't acknowledge it through various other characters and does remark on how creepy it is.

As for XL, he didn't fall in love with HC in 30 chapters, he took his own sweet time in even a teeny bit acknowledging that what he feels for HC is not friendship but love. And that journey, 251 chapters of seeing XL fall in love with HC was lovely.

I honestly adored this novel. This was my very first Chinese novel (and BL), and it will forever have a special place in my heart. If you are not into slow burn and would always want to prefer that build up of romance, I would not recommend reading this. However, I love reading length novels, so this was the perfect novel for me!

Romance is definitely vanilla, compared to MDZS. "Love making" is only implied and not written at all in the extras. I guess I could agree to a certain... more>> point that reading this was tiring, but after reaching halfway through Book 1, everything was at ease. The translation is also pretty good as I had no troubles in understanding what the novel wants to convey.

I love how everything has been foreshadowed through small details. While this may be bland for other readers, I beg to disagree. The simplicity of Hua Cheng's undying love to Xie Lian and Xie Lian's selflessness to help the people is literally why I cannot get over this. I have never read any stories such as this, wherein romance is not visibly strong (and not the focal point until late chapters) but you know that it is there PRESENT all the time. I just can't explain it that well,

but after finishing Book 2 and Book 4, everything hits differently now. The pain from the past really hits hard. Book 4, while it is the shortest, hits the most. I literally bawled my eyes out late at night, and I just had to watch cat videos to get over the pain. All the things Hua Cheng has done for Xie Lian is understandable.

Please give it a try if you don't mind the slowburn and vanilla romance! While I love MDZS, TGCF hits differently even if I am weeks over this novel! Truly a masterpiece that I cannot compare to others! <<less

This is so precious! I think this is the best novel I've read so far and no one could replace it easily. I wish I could find novels on par with this again. (Peerless and Thousand Autumns are also very good.)

I love everything in this story. The MC is not so OP, too realistic actually. I pitied him so much that I'm always teary-eyed. He really suffered so much that it didn't even show in the early chapters that he experienced life like that. He's not that perfect even... more>> though he's a god (Well, all of them are not.)

ML is so cute every time he calls our MC, gege. And also, in front of him, he acts childish haha. I like how the author plot ML's character background. Really interesting (Like other characters' life, too.)

The supporting characters and villains are also lovable. I love MC's two best friends aka ex-attendants and their bickering. The ghosts in ML's domain are so funny too haha.

If the author just makes the story long for the other characters too, then that's good. I really felt that's the only thing that is lacking. I want to know what happened to them.

I also love the fighting scenes. Always making me tense and thrilled.

You'll never regret trying this. (But I regret I didn't read this earlier on, sighs. I just looked at this uninterested at first but when I heard that there's gonna be a drama adaptation, I decided to read this.) I couldn't wait for the drama anymore! I personally think the actors are really suitable for the roles so please don't hate them. They're all so handsome actually. Let's just trust the production team and also don't make so many demands.

Anyways, I really enjoyed reading this. The translations are good too. Thank you for the translators' hard work! <<less

This is an absolutely must read. Seriously it’s one of the best danmeis you’ll ever read. The relationship between the MC and ML is just *chef’s kiss*. Don’t skip over it just because it’s shounen ai and doesn’t have papapa in it, you dummie. Read it. Cry over it. Fall in love with it and repeat until you realize you should do something productive with your life. We’re also getting a life action soon so if you enjoy watching stuff more, stay tuned

This is my first review ever in novelupdates for the first danmei novel that I've finished (one of my top 5 favorite danmei novel until now).

First of all I want to say thank you so much to the translators for their hard work in translating this wonderful novel.

From the story and the characters are all great and very memorable.... The main couple (HuaLian) is one of the best couple that I've ever read in any novel and the side characters are also one of the best....

Im no expert and not good with words... but this one is a gem. I cant describe the impact the story to me but ML is my all time fave character. He is no angel but his love is just so pure, my heart aches sometimes.

This is a story of a good man (MC) whose moral and beliefs is tested over and over again. I believe he dont think he is good, he just have this firm belief that he wanted to protect against all odds.

This is a story of... more>> a lost man (ML) who fight and survived just for the MC. His entire existence is literally for the sake of the MC -its bittersweet.

This novel will take you from past to present to past, a long and winding journey (but epic) of MC that will bring you to solve mystery, understands humanity, will make you laugh, cry (yes prep tissue), frustrated, effing mad and triumphant.

Above all, for me - this one is a great love story. Yes it is slow burn but the whole point of the story revolves on how the ML so deep in love made the impossible possible. His undying faith to the MC made the MC stronger and succeed. The power of one faith that can lift a mountain. TT

I really like this novel. It is different and unique because it is not your typical MC character development. At the start of the novel, the MC has already gone through the usual starting point/comfort zone, want/need, conflict/battle, solution/resolution, and change. So I think it throws a lot of people off because it seems like there is no room for development. I can understand the frustration and lack of interest. But there is MC development but it is not in your typical internal MC development. As the reader, you see... more>> the development of a really slow-burn romance and that is what I signed up for! It is a sweet love story. The MC and ML have great communication which is refreshing. The desire/longing on the MC's part could have been further developed however, the ML's desire/longing kind of makes up for it (the ML has waited long enough). There were some missed opportunities for conflict within the ML and MC romance that could have made the romance very interesting but it is what it is.

Overall, this is more of a novel with a lot of mini-arcs that lead to the main arc (which is interesting). These arcs are done in more of an adventure style. There are some interesting and fun adventures but this is more of a slice of life with adventures, funny, slow burn, fluffy romance with a sprinkle of tragedy. Everyone likes different things so just go in with an open mind. <<less

For me this is the best story I've read so far.I like the characters personalities. The moments when you thought that person is nice and then suddenly a villain is totally unexpected for me and left me dumbstruck. The MC and ML is very likable. There moments together are so precious.

I've read a review saying that xie lan at most only help when they get something in return I don't agree with that statement but no hate though. Xie Lan is someone who have gone through a lot of things... more>> and the other heavenly official is really not that close with him even his past subordinates. Regarding about what happened with the wind master he himself said it that he can't do anything even if he wanted to do so.]

I may sound bias but we have different taste and opinion. Some said that the MC and ML at most only care about each other I as a person who likes things such as devotion appreciate this moments they have. And I think it's better to just focused on each other than anyone because I have already read countless novel that have a third party and it always caused misunderstandings this is my opinion.

I may sound defensive but this is completely my thoughts. May sound biased but like I said no hate intended.

Some may compare this story to the author other work but I strongly believe that each story has it's own charm. <<less

This is my fave danmei novel - it's just so brilliant. Full of action and history and mistakes and fate and tragedy and betrayal and fights and demons, with a lot of comedy and one of my fave CPs. It's an essential read.

It kept my attention all the way and watching one mystery after the other being solved wich are slowly leading to the reveal of the person who tormented the MC for years has really kept me on edge

but of course through the occasional sweet moments between the MC and ML the Story brightens a lot and clears through the horrible things that happened in the past through those sweet moments. I also find that throughout the story I also became engrossed in the other characters. All in all a great novel and would definitely recommend for everyone who likes drama and sweet sweet love!<3 <<less

Wow what a masterpiece! It took me forever to begin because I wasn’t sure I’d like the dynamic between XL and HC but I’m so glad I decided to read it in the end. Everything, from the side characters to the plot, is written so well. Of course there would be parts of the plot that aren’t filled out, but I believe that’s intentional, to allow the readers to infer on their own. I just kind of wish HC was developed a bit more, we never really know what happened... more>> during that 10 year drift period. <<less

I love it, love it love it! Love the Dong Hua, Dong Man, Xie Lian brought me see everything thru his eyes.... The love, the pain, the betrays, the sickness, the suffering, the hope, the faith, and the HE that I never can get enough off.

With that much of chapters, sometimes I feel that the novel isn't going anywhere and there's too much fillers. But I mean it do talk about MC past experiences that is long as hell. MXTX writing is dear to my heart. She rlly mastered the way of telling a story filled with action without forgetting the original purpose of the story. I would say that MXTX creation is a classic and timeless piece of art.

This is one of the best stories I have ever read. There are some plot holes, but the characterization, the adventures and all the twists and hoops make it more than worth it.

It is just so sad and many characters deserved a better fate than the one they got, I wish they had more spin offs where they all could have a happy ending T.T

My heart cries for many in this story, especially the Wind Master and Jun Wu!!! They should have had a kinder fate T.T
